The solvatochromism and other spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics of four azo disperse dyes, derived from 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole, were evaluated and interpreted with the aid of experimental data and quantum mechanical calculations. For the non-substituted compound two conformers, E and Z, were proposed for the isolated molecules, being the second one considerably less stable. The optimization of these structures in combination with a SCRF methodology (IEFPCM, Simulating the molecules in a continuum dielectric with characteristics of methanol), suggests that the Z form is not stable in solution. This same behaviour is expected for the substituted compounds, which is corroborated by experimental data presented in previous investigations [A.E.H. Machado, L.M. Rodrigues, S. Gupta, A.M.F. Oliveira-Campos, A.M.S. Silva, J. Mol. Struct. 738 (2005) 239-245]. For the substituted compounds, two forms derived from E conformer (A and R) are possible. Quantum mechanical data suggest for the isolated molecules, that the low energy absorption hand of the E conformers involve at least two close electronic states. having the low-lying excited state a (1)(n,pi*) nature, and being the S-2 state attributed to a (1)(pi,pi*) transition. The data also suggest a small energy gap between the absorption peaks of A and B, related to the easy conversion between these forms. For the structures optimized in combination with the applied SCRF methodology, an states inversion is observed for the Substituted compounds, with a considerable diminish of the energy gap between A and B absorption peaks. The electronic spectra of these compounds are quite sensitive to changes in the solvent polarity. The positive solvatochromism is more evident in aprotic solvents, probably due to the polarization induced by the solute. These compounds do not fluoresce at 298 K, but present a small but perceptible fluorescence at 77 K, which seems to be favoured by the nature of the group in the 2 `-position of the phenyl ring. Moreover, such compounds present expressive values for first hyperpolarizability, which implies in good non-linear optics (NLO) responses and photoswitching capability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.

We attempt a comprehensive analysis of the low lying charm meson states which present several puzzles, including the poor determination of masses of several non-strange excited mesons. We use the well-determined masses of the ground states and the strange first excited states to 'predict' the mass of the non-strange first excited state in the framework of heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory, an approach that is complementary to the well-known analysis of Mehen and Springer. This approach points to values for the masses of these states that are smaller than the experimental determinations. We provide a critical assessment of these mass measurements and point out the need for new experimental information. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Part I of this thesis deals with 3 topics concerning the luminescence from bound multi-exciton complexes in Si. Part II presents a model for the decay of electron-hole droplets in pure and doped Ge.

Part I.

We present high resolution photoluminescence data for Si doped With Al, Ga, and In. We observe emission lines due to recombination of electron-hole pairs in bound excitons and satellite lines which have been interpreted in terms of complexes of several excitons bound to an impurity. The bound exciton luminescence in Si:Ga and Si:Al consists of three emission lines due to transitions from the ground state and two low lying excited states. In Si:Ga, we observe a second triplet of emission lines which precisely mirror the triplet due to the bound exciton. This second triplet is interpreted as due to decay of a two exciton complex into the bound exciton. The observation of the second complete triplet in Si:Ga conclusively demonstrates that more than one exciton will bind to an impurity. Similar results are found for Si:Al. The energy of the lines show that the second exciton is less tightly bound than the first in Si:Ga. Other lines are observed at lower energies. The assumption of ground state to ground-state transitions for the lower energy lines is shown to produce a complicated dependence of binding energy of the last exciton on the number of excitons in a complex. No line attributable to the decay of a two exciton complex is observed in Si:In.

We present measurements of the bound exciton lifetimes for the four common acceptors in Si and for the first two bound multi-exciton complexes in Si:Ga and Si:Al. These results are shown to be in agreement with a calculation by Osbourn and Smith of Auger transition rates for acceptor bound excitons in Si. Kinetics determine the relative populations of complexes of various sizes and work functions, at temperatures which do not allow them to thermalize with respect to one another. It is shown that kinetic limitations may make it impossible to form two-exciton complexes in Si:In from a gas of free excitons.

We present direct thermodynamic measurements of the work functions of bound multi-exciton complexes in Al, B, P and Li doped Si. We find that in general the work functions are smaller than previously believed. These data remove one obstacle to the bound multi-exciton complex picture which has been the need to explain the very large apparent work functions for the larger complexes obtained by assuming that some of the observed lines are ground-state to ground-state transitions. None of the measured work functions exceed that of the electron-hole liquid.

Part II.

A new model for the decay of electron-hole-droplets in Ge is presented. The model is based on the existence of a cloud of droplets within the crystal and incorporates exciton flow among the drops in the cloud and the diffusion of excitons away from the cloud. It is able to fit the experimental luminescence decays for pure Ge at different temperatures and pump powers while retaining physically reasonable parameters for the drops. It predicts the shrinkage of the cloud at higher temperatures which has been verified by spatially and temporally resolved infrared absorption experiments. The model also accounts for the nearly exponential decay of electron-hole-droplets in lightly doped Ge at higher temperatures.

The resonance Raman spectra of the lowest lying singlet (S-1) state of free-base tetraphenylporphyrin and seven of its isotopomers were recorded under pump-and-probe conditions with a time delay of -2 ns between pump and probe laser pulses, In the S-1 spectra of the isotopomers, as in the ground state, there are dramatic splittings of what appear to be single bands in the natural isotopic abundance spectrum. The most structurally significant bands of the S-1 state were assigned on the basis of the isotope data, In some cases it was necessary to curve fit unresolved bands in the excited-state spectra in order to account for observed intensity ratios and to rationalize isotope shifts, The changes in band positions on excitation to the S-1 state were compared with those from earlier studies on the T-1 state. The changes in band positions were found to be similar For both excited states. Most notable was the similar shift in nu(2), the most widely used marker band for orbital character. The data are interpreted as implying that the lowest lying singlet state is a configuration interaction admixture of b(1u)b(2g) + a(u)b(3g) configurations with the coefficients weighted heavily in favour of b(1n)b(2g), which Is the configuration of the T-1 state. We report on the UV photodissociation of specific vibrational states (v = 2–45) of ClO+ using velocity map
ion imaging. The high vibrational states of ClO+ are prepared via a double resonant scheme through the
ClO (A 2P) state and ion-pair states followed by photoionization with a third photon. The absorption of a
fourth photon results in photodissociation of the ClO+ into two dominant asymptotic channels. The Cl+
and O+ fragment ion images reveal information on both the energetics of high-lying cation vibrational
states and the low-lying dissociative electronic states that correlate to Cl+(3P) + O(3P) and Cl(2P) + O+(4S)
asymptotic channels. We also report ab initio potentials for the bound ClO+ and ion-pair states as well as
calculations of the ClO+ excited states relevant to the photodissociation process.

Efficient photocyclization from a low-lying triplet state is reported for a photochromic dithienylperfluorocyclopentene with Ru(bpy)(3) units attached via a phenylene linker to the thiophene rings. The ring-closure reaction in the nanosecond domain is sensitized by the metal complexes. Upon photoexcitation into the lowest Ru-to-bpy (MLCT)-M-1 state followed by intersystem crossing to emitting (MLCT)-M-3 states, photoreactive (IL)-I-3 states are populated by an efficient energy-transfer process. The involvement of these (IL)-I-3 states explains the quantum yield of the photocyclization, which is independent of the excitation wavelength but decreases strongly in the presence of dioxygen. This behavior differs substantially from the photocyclization of the nonemissive dithienylperfluorocyclopentene free ligand, which occurs from the lowest (IL)-I-1 state on a picosecond time scale and is insensitive to oxygen quenching. Cyclic voltammetric studies have also been performed to gain further insight into the energetics of the system. The very high photocyclization quantum yields, far above 0.5 in both cases, are ascribed to the strong steric repulsion between the bulky substituents on the dithienylperfluorocyclopentene bridge bearing the chelating bipyridine sites or the Ru(bpy)(3) moieties, forcing the system to adopt nearly exclusively the reactive antiparallel conformation. In contrast, replacement of both Ru(II) centers by Os(II) completely prevents the photocyclization reaction upon light excitation into the low-lying Os-to-bpy (MLCT)-M-1 state. The photoreaction can only be triggered by optical population of the higher lying (IL)-I-1 excited state of the central photochromic unit, but its yield is low due to efficient energy transfer to the luminescent lowest (MLCT)-M-3 state.

The nonadiabatic photochemistry of the guanine molecule (2-amino-6-oxopurine) and some of its tautomers has been studied by means of the high-level theoretical ab initio quantum chemistry methods CASSCF and CASPT2. Accurate computations, based by the first time on minimum energy reaction paths, states minima, transition states, reaction barriers, and conical intersections on the potential energy hypersurfaces of the molecules lead to interpret the photochemistry of guanine and derivatives within a three-state model. As in the other purine DNA nucleobase, adenine, the ultrafast subpicosecond fluorescence decay measured in guanine is attributed to the barrierless character of the path leading from the initially populated (1)(pi pi* L-a) spectroscopic state of the molecule toward the low-lying methanamine-like conical intersection (gs/pi pi* L-a)(CI). On the contrary, other tautomers are shown to have a reaction energy barrier along the main relaxation profile. A second, slower decay is attributed to a path involving switches toward two other states, (1)(pi pi* L-b) and, in particular, (1)(n(o)pi*), ultimately leading to conical intersections with the ground state. A common framework for the ultrafast relaxation of the natural nucleobases is obtained in which the predominant role of a pi pi*-type state is confirmed.

The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. We present here a theoretical approach to compute the molecular magnetic anisotropy parameters, D (M) and E (M) for single molecule magnets in any given spin eigenstate of exchange spin Hamiltonian. We first describe a hybrid constant M (S) valence bond (VB) technique of solving spin Hamiltonians employing full spatial and spin symmetry adaptation and we illustrate this technique by solving the exchange Hamiltonian of the Cu6Fe8 system. Treating the anisotropy Hamiltonian as perturbation, we compute the D (M)and E(M) values for various eigenstates of the exchange Hamiltonian. Since, the dipolar contribution to the magnetic anisotropy is negligibly small, we calculate the molecular anisotropy from the single-ion anisotropies of the metal centers. We have studied the variation of D (M) and E(M) by rotating the single-ion anisotropies in the case of Mn12Ac and Fe-8 SMMs in ground and few low-lying excited states of the exchange Hamiltonian. In both the systems, we find that the molecular anisotropy changes drastically when the single-ion anisotropies are rotated. While in Mn12Ac SMM D (M) values depend strongly on the spin of the eigenstate, it is almost independent of the spin of the eigenstate in Fe-8 SMM. We also find that the D (M)value is almost insensitive to the orientation of the anisotropy of the core Mn(IV) ions. The dependence of D (M) on the energy gap between the ground and the excited states in both the systems has also been studied by using different sets of exchange constants.

The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is used for a comparative study of low-lying excitations in trans-polyacetylene (t-PA) and transversely substituted t-PA (TS-t-PA). We have employed the Pariser-Parr-Pople model Hamiltonian which incorporates long-range electronic correlations to model these systems. We find some fundamental differences in the excited states of the t-PA and TS-t-PA. We find that the lowest two-photon allowed excited state in TS-t-PA is not made up of two triplet excitons and the gap to this state is nonzero even for undimerized chains in the thermodynamic limit. Contrary to earlier results for the Hubbard model, we find that the lowest two-photon state is always below the first optically allowed state in all the systems studied here making TS-t-PA systems only weakly fluorescent materials. Nonresonant tumbling averaged linear and third harmonic generation optic coefficients of TS-t-PA systems are also much smaller than that of t-PA.

We applied our previous theory of high temperature superconductivity to Bi and Tl compounds in this paper. The theory involves the role of electron pairs in the spin singlet of species Xequal-or-greater, slanted (Bi3+ (6S2), Tl(6S2) etc.) and their virtual excited state X0 (Bi5+ (6s0), Tl3+ (6s0), etc.) in the pairing interaction of quasiholes. Bi and Tl species provide additional channels of kind (Xequal-or-greater, slanted left angle bracket X0) owing to the charge fluctuations. We treated the two states of these species like a two-level Bose system. We used the pseudospin formalism to calculate the expression for the critical temperature in this paper. We also calculated numerically the value of Tc for Bi and Tl compounds and found a good agreement between theory and experiment.

Symmetrized density-matrix-renormalization-group calculations have been carried out, within Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian, to explore the nature of the ground and low-lying excited states of long polythiophene oligomers. We have exploited C-2 symmetry and spin parity of the system to obtain excited states of experimental interest, and studied the lowest dipole allowed excited state and lowest dipole forbidden two photon state, for different oligomer sizes. In the long system limit, the dipole allowed excited state always lies below the lowest dipole forbidden two-photon state which implies, by Kasha rule, that polythiophene fluoresces strongly. The lowest triplet state lies below two-photon state as usual in conjugated polymers. We have doped the system with a hole and an electron and obtained the charge excitation gap and the binding energy of the 1(1)B(u)(-) exciton. We have calculated the charge density of the ground, one-photon and two-photon states for the longer system size of 10 thiophene rings to characterize these states. We have studied bond order in these states to get an idea about the equilibrium excited state geometry of the system. We have also studied the charge density distribution of the singly and doubly doped polarons for longer system size, and observe that polythiophenes do not support bipolarons.

We have carried out symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group calculations to study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian. We have used the C-2 symmetry, the electron-hole symmetry, and the spin parity of the system in our calculations. We find that there is a crossover in the lowest dipole forbidden two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state with size of the oligomer. In the long system limit, the two-photon state lies below the lowest dipole allowed excited state. The triplet state lies well below the two-photon state and energetically does not correspond to its description as being made up of two triplets. These results are in agreement with the general trends in linear conjugated polymers. However, unlike in linear polyenes wherein the two-photon state is a localized excitation, we find that in polyacenes, the two-photon excitation is spread out over the system. We have doped the systems with a hole and an electron and have calculated the charge excitation gap. Using the charge gap and the optical gap, we estimate the binding energy of the 1(1)B(-) exciton to be 2.09 eV. We have also studied doubly doped polyacenes and find that the bipolaron in these systems, to be composed of two separated polarons, as indicated by the calculated charge-density profile and charge-charge correlation function. We have studied bond orders in various states in order to get an idea of the excited state geometry of the system. We find that the ground state, the triplet state, the dipole allowed state, and the polaron excitations correspond to lengthening of the rung bonds in the interior of the oligomer while the two-photon excitation corresponds to the rung bond lengths having two maxima in the system.

In this report, electronically non-adiabatic decomposition pathways of clusters of dimethylnitramine and aluminum (DMNA-Al and DMNA-Al-2) are discussed in comparison to isolated dimethylnitramine (DMNA). Electronically excited state processes of DMNA-Al and DMNA-Al-2 are explored using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and the restricted active space self-consistent field (RASSCF) theories, respectively. Similar to the nitro-nitrite isomerization reaction pathway of DMNA, DMNA-Al-n clusters also exhibit isomerization pathway. However, it involves several other steps, such as, first Al-O bond dissociation, then N-N bond dissociation followed by isomerization and finally NO elimination. Furthermore, DMNA-Al-n clusters exhibit overall exothermic decomposition reaction pathway and isolated DMNA shows overall endothermic reaction channel.
