This paper presents the case history of the construction of a 3 m high embankment on the geocell foundation over the soft settled red mud. Red mud is a waste product from the Bayer process of Aluminum industry. Geotechnical problems of the site, the design of the geocell foundation based on experimental investigation and the construction sequences of the geocell foundations in the field are discussed in the paper. Based on the experimental studies, an analytical model was also developed to estimate the load carrying capacity of the soft clay bed reinforced with geocell and combination of geocell and geogrid. The results of the experimental and analytical studies revealed that the use of combination of geocell and the geogrid is always beneficial than using the geocell alone. Hence, the combination of geocell and geogrid was recommended to stabilize the embankment base. The reported embankment is located in Lanjigharh (Orissa) in India. Construction of the embankment on the geocell foundation has already been completed. The constructed embankmenthas already sustained two monsoon rains without any cracks and seepage. Sugganahalli, a rural vernacular community in a warm-humid region in South India, is under transition towards adopting modern construction practices. Vernacular local building elements like rubble walls and mud roofs are given way to burnt brick walls and reinforced cement concrete (RCC)/tin roofs. Over 60% of Indian population is rural, and implications of such transitions on thermal comfort and energy in buildings are crucial to understand. Vernacular architecture evolves adopting local resources in response to the local climate adopting passive solar designs. This paper investigates the effectiveness of passive solar elements on the indoor thermal comfort by adopting modern climate-responsive design strategies. Dynamic simulation models validated by measured data have also been adopted to determine the impact of the transition from vernacular to modern material-configurations. Age-old traditional design considerations were found to concur with modern understanding into bio-climatic response and climate-responsiveness. Modern transitions were found to increase the average indoor temperatures in excess of 7 degrees C. Such transformations tend to shift the indoor conditions to a psychrometric zone that is likely to require active air-conditioning. Also, the surveyed thermal sensation votes were found to lie outside the extended thermal comfort boundary for hot developing countries provided by Givoni in the bio-climatic chart.

The bearing capacity of a circular footing lying over fully cohesive strata, with an overlaying sand layer, is computed using the axisymmetric lower bound limit analysis with finite elements and linear optimization. The effects of the thickness and the internal friction angle of the sand are examined for different combinations of c(u)/(gamma b) and q, where c(u)=the undrained shear strength of the cohesive strata, gamma=the unit weight of either layer, b=the footing radius, and q=the surcharge pressure. The results are given in the form of a ratio (eta) of the bearing capacity with an overlaying sand layer to that for a footing lying directly over clayey strata. An overlaying medium dense to dense sand layer considerably improves the bearing capacity. The improvement continuously increases with decreases in c(u)/(gamma b) and increases in phi and q/(gamma b). A certain optimum thickness of the sand layer exists beyond which no further improvement occurs. This optimum thickness increases with an increase in 0 and q and with a decrease in c(u)/(gamma b). 目前高速公路中央分隔带波形梁护栏立柱的实际设置中,普遍存在着由于分隔带地基强度低于压实路基,护栏立柱承载能力偏低,护栏的防护性能达不到设计要求的问题。对粘性土地基中立柱的受力情况进行了分析,并对地基为压实土与回填土两种情况进行了对比,给出了中央分隔带中立柱地基的加固方案。

The experimental investigation of the response of suction bucket foundation in fine sand layer under horizontal dynamic loading has been carried out. The developments of settlement and excess pore pressure of sand foundation have been mainly studied. It is shown that the sand surrounding the bucket softens or even liquefies at the first stage if the loading amplitude is over a critical value, at later stage, the bucket settles and the sand layer consolidates gradually. With the solidification of the liquefied sand layer and the settlement of the bucket, the movement of the sand layer and the bucket reach a stable state.

In this paper, the possible error sources of the composite natural frequencies due to modeling the shape memory alloy (SMA) wire as an axial force or an elastic foundation and anisotropy are discussed. The great benefit of modeling the SMA wire as an axial force and an elastic foundation is that the complex constitutive relation of SMA can be avoided. But as the SMA wire and graphite-epoxy are rigidly bonded together, such constraint causes the re-distribution of the stress in the composite. This, together with anisotropy, which also reduces the structural stiffness can cause the relatively large error between the experimental data and theoretical results.

El presente trabajo se planificó con la finalidad de determinar el periodo crítico de competencia de malezas sobre el rendimiento del cultivo del maní (Arachis hypogaea L.) variedad Georgia Runner, para lo cual se incluyeron tratamientos enmalezados y limpios (hasta los 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 y 100 días después de la siembra) bajo las condiciones ecológicas de la finca La Concepción, Nagarote León. El ensayo se estableció en la siembra de postrera de 1999, utilizándose un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. El resultado estadístico realizado a la variable de rendimiento mostró diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos evaluados, alcanzándose el mayor rendimiento con el tratamientos 12 (limpio hasta los 100 dds) con 2 281.3 kg/ha y sin diferencias significativas con el tratamiento 10 (limpio hasta los 60 dds) con 2 262.5 kg/ha y el tratamiento 11 (limpio hasta los 75 dds) con 2 275 kg/ha y los rendimientos más bajos se alcanzaron en el T6 (enmalezado hasta los lOO dds) con 562.5 kg/ha y el tratamiento 7 (limpio hasta los 15 días) con 600 kg/ha. Así mismo, se llegó a la conclusión de que el período crítico de competencia de maleza para el cultivo del maní se inicia a partir de los 15 y termina hasta los 60 días después de la siembra.

El presente trabajo se estableció con el propósito de determinar el período crítico de control de malezas en el cultivo del maní (Arachis hypogaea L.) variedad Georgia Runner. Se incluyeron tratamientos enmalezados y limpios (hasta los 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 y 100 días después de la siembra) bajo las condiciones ecológicas de la finca La Concepción, Nagarote León. El ensayo se estableció en postrera de 1999, utilizándose un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. El rendimiento de maní mostró diferencias significativas entre tratamientos. En los tratamientos enmalezados hasta, el mayor rendimiento se obtuvó cuando el cultivo se mantuvo enmalezado hasta los 15 días después de la siembra (dds). En los períodos de control de malezas, los mayores rendimientos se obtuvieron cuando las malezas se controlaron hasta los 60, 75 y 100 dds. El período crítico de control de malezas en el cultivo de maní se inicia a partir de los 15 días después de la siembra (dds) y termina hasta los 60 dds.

Resumen: De acuerdo con el autor, la capacidad del alma de conocerse a sí misma está en la raíz del problema de la persona. Más aún, el entendimiento deber ser interpretado antológicamente como una actividad del alma. Se lleva a cabo un análisis del concepto de persona en algunos filósofos medievales y modernos. También hay referencias a pensadores contemporáneos. El autor sostiene que la noción que Spaemann introduce, considerando la intencionalidad como meramente un sentimiento o negatividad, es insuficiente. El mencionado sentimiento subjetivo es idéntico al concepto de ‘intuición experienciante’ en la fenomenología; pero es insuficiente para permitirnos comprender la esencia de la persona como una entidad espiritual. El autor afirma que cada ser humano debería ser reconocido, no sólo como una creatura racional, sino también como persona, en especial cuando nos referimos a este ser humano o a esta alma. Agrega que las consecuencias prácticas de esta perspectiva son de gran importancia.

In this paper, the nonlinear collapse of the BOHAI-8 pile foundation jacket platform has been analyzed. The ultimate load and collapse process of two computational models of the structure are given. One model is of fixed support whose length is eight times the pile leg diameter and the other considers the nonlinearity of the soil-pile interaction.

Based on the dynamic governing equation of propagating buckle on a beam on a nonlinear elastic foundation, this paper deals with an important problem of buckle arrest by combining the FEM with a time integration technique. A new conclusion completely different from that by the quasi-static analysis about the buckle arrestor design is drawn. This shows that the inertia of the beam cannot be ignored in the analysis under consideration, especially when the buckle propagation is suddenly stopped by the arrestors.

The paper revisits a simple beam model used by Chater et al. (1983, Proc. IUTAM Symp. Collapse, Cambridge University Press) to examine the dynamics of propagating buckles on it. It was found that, if a buckle is initiated at a constant pressure higher than the propagation pressure of the model (P-p), the buckle accelerates and gradually reaches a constant velocity which depends upon the pressure, while if it is initiated at P-p, the buckle propagates at a velocity which depends upon the initial imperfection. The causes for the difference are also investigated.
