Geometric, thermodynamic and electronic properties of cluster neutrals NbxOy and cations NbxOy+ (x = 1-3; y = 2-5, 7, 8) have been characterized theoretically. A DFT calculation using a hybrid combination of B3LYP with contracted Huzinaga basis sets. Numerical results of the relative stabilities, ionization potentials and band gaps of different clusters are in agreement with experiment. Analysis of dissociation channels supports the more stable building blocks as formed by NbO2, NbO2+ NbO3 and NbO3+ stoichiometries. The net atomic charges suggest that oxygen donor molecules can interact more favorably on central niobium atoms of cluster cations, while the interaction with oxygen acceptor molecules is more favorable on the terminal oxygen atoms of neutral clusters. A topological analysis of the electron localization function gradient field indicates that the clusters may be described as having a strong ionic interaction between Nb and O atoms. A novel supermolecule constituted by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters coordinated to manganese(III)-meso -tetra(4-pyridil)porphyrin acetate ([MnTPyP]CH3COO) has been synthesized. Characterization has been performed by UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) in N,N'-dimethylformamide has been analyzed in terms of five redox processes: three related to peripheral clusters (Ru-IV,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-II,Ru-II) and two centered on the Mn-porphyrin core ((MnP)-P-III/(MnP)-P-II/(MnP2-)-P-II). A direct comparison has been performed between MnTCP and MnTPyP as catalysts for the cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions. The improved selectivity exhibited by the supramolecular catalyst for cyclohexane oxidation has been ascribed to electronic effects on the oxomanganese(V) porphyrin species induced by the four peripheral clusters, in the formal (RuRuRuIII)-Ru-IV-Ru-III oxidation state. The Gaussian-2, Gaussian-3, complete basis set- (CBS-) QB3, and CBS-APNO methods have been used to calculate ΔH° and ΔG° values for neutral clusters of water, (H2O)n, where n = 2−6. The structures are similar to those determined from experiment and from previous high-level calculations. The thermodynamic calculations by the G2, G3, and CBS-APNO methods compare well against the estimated MP2(CBS) limit. The cyclic pentamer and hexamer structures release the most heat per hydrogen bond formed of any of the clusters. While the cage and prism forms of the hexamer are the lowest energy structures at very low temperatures, as temperature is increased the cyclic structure is favored. The free energies of cluster formation at different temperatures reveal interesting insights, the most striking being that the cyclic trimer, cyclic tetramer, and cyclic pentamer, like the dimer, should be detectable in the lower troposphere. We predict water dimer concentrations of 9 × 1014 molecules/cm3, water trimer concentrations of 2.6 × 1012 molecules/cm3, tetramer concentrations of approximately 5.8 × 1011 molecules/cm3, and pentamer concentrations of approximately 3.5 × 1010 molecules/cm3 in saturated air at 298 K. These results have important implications for understanding the gas-phase chemistry of the lower troposphere.

The Gaussian-2, Gaussian-3, Complete Basis Set-QB3, and Complete Basis Set-APNO methods have been used to calculate geometries of neutral clusters of water, (H2O)n, where n = 2–6. The structures are in excellent agreement with those determined from experiment and those predicted from previous high-level calculations. These methods also provide excellent thermochemical predictions for water clusters, and thus can be used with confidence in evaluating the structures and thermochemistry of water clusters.

The Gaussian-3 method developed by Pople and coworkers has been used to calculate the free energy of neutral octamer clusters of water, (H2O)8. The most energetically stable structures are in excellent agreement with those determined from experiment and those predicted from previous high-level calculations. Cubic structures are favored over noncubic structures over all temperature ranges studied. The D2d cubic structure is the lowest free energy structure and dominates the potential energy and free energy hypersurfaces from 0 K to 298 K.

The Gaussian-3 (G3) model chemistry method has been used to calculate the relative ΔG° values for all possible conformers of neutral clusters of water, (H2O)n, where n = 3−5. A complete 12-fold conformational search around each hydrogen bond produced 144, 1728, and 20 736 initial starting structures of the water trimer, tetramer, and pentamer. These structures were optimized with PM3, followed by HF/6-31G* optimization, and then with the G3 model chemistry. Only two trimers are present on the G3 potential energy hypersurface. We identified 5 tetramers and 10 pentamers on the potential energy and free-energy hypersurfaces at 298 K. None of these 17 structures were linear; all linear starting models folded into cyclic or three-dimensional structures. The cyclic pentamer is the most stable isomer at 298 K. On the basis of this and previous studies, we expect the cyclic tetramers and pentamers to be the most significant cyclic water clusters in the atmosphere.

The efficacy of durable polymer drug-eluting stents (DES) is delivered at the expense of delayed healing of the stented vessel. Biodegradable polymer DES aim to avoid this shortcoming and may potentially improve long-term clinical outcomes, with benefit expected to accrue over time. We sought to compare long-term outcomes in patients treated with biodegradable polymer DES vs. durable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents (SES).

Mo(VI) oxo complexes have been persistently sought after as epoxidation catalysts. Further, Mo(V) oxo clusters of the form M4(µ3-X)4 (M = transition metal, X = O, S) have been rigorously studied due to their remarkable structures and also their usefulness as models for electronic studies. The syntheses and characterizations of new Mo(VI) and Mo(V) oxo complexes have been described in this dissertation. Two new complexes MoO2Cl2Ph2P(O)CH2COOH and MoO2Cl2Ph2P(O)C6H4tBuS(O) were synthesized from reactions of “MoO2Cl2” with ligands Ph2P(O)CH2COOH and Ph2P(O)C6H4tBuS(O). Tetrameric packing arrangements comprised of hydrogen bonds were obtained for the complex MoO2Cl2Ph2P(O)CH2COOH and the ligand Ph2P(O)CH2COOH. Further the stability of an Mo-O bond was preferred over the Mo-S bond even though this resulted in the formation of a more strained seven membered ring. Tetranuclear Mo(V) complexes of the form [Mo4(µ3-O)4(µ-O2PR2)4O4], (PR2 = PPh2, PMe2) were synthesized using reactions of MoO2(acac)2 with diphenyl and dimethyl phosphinic acids, in ethanol. In the crystal structure of these complexes four Mo=O units are interconnected by four triply bridging oxygen atoms and bridging phosphinate ligands. The complex exhibited fourfold symmetry as evidenced by a single 31P NMR peak for the P atoms in the coordinated ligands. Reaction of WO2(acac)2 with Ph2POOH in methanol resulted in a dimeric W(VI) complex [(CH3O)2(O)W(µ-O)( µ-O2PPh2)2W(O)(CH3O)2] which contained a packing disorder in its crystal structure. Similar reactions of MoO2(acac)2 with benzoic acid derivatives resulted in dimeric complexes of the form [Mo2O2(acac)2(µ-O)(µ-OC2H5)(µ-O2CR)] (R = C6H5, (o-OH)C6H4, (p-Cl)C6H4, (2,4-(OH)2)C6H3, (o-I)C6H4) and one tetrameric complex [Mo2O2(acac)2(µ-O)(µ-OC2H5)(µ-O2C)C6H4(p-µ-O2C)Mo2O2(acac)2(µ-O)(µ-OC2H5)] with terephthalic acid. 1H NMR proved very useful in the prediction of the formation of dimers with the substituted benzoic acids, which were also confirmed by elemental analyses. The reductive capability of ethanol proved instrumental in the syntheses of Mo(V) tetrameric and dimeric clusters. Synthetic details, IR, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses are reported for all new complexes. Further, single crystal X-ray structures of MoO2Cl2Ph2P(O)CH2COOH, MoO2Cl2Ph2P(O)C6H4tBuS(O), [Mo4(µ3-O)4(µ-O2PR2)4O4], (PR2 = PPh2, PMe2), [(CH3O)2(O)W(µ-O)( µ-O2PPh2)2W(O)(CH3O)2] and [Mo2O2(acac)2(µ-O)(µ-OC2H5)(µ-O2CR)] (R = C6H5, (o-OH)C6H4) are also presented.

BACKGROUND There is ongoing debate on the optimal drug-eluting stent (DES) in diabetic patients with coronary artery disease. Biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stents (BP-DES) may potentially improve clinical outcomes in these high-risk patients. We sought to compare long-term outcomes in patients with diabetes treated with biodegradable polymer DES vs. durable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents (SES). METHODS We pooled individual patient-level data from 3 randomized clinical trials (ISAR-TEST 3, ISAR-TEST 4 and LEADERS) comparing biodegradable polymer DES with durable polymer SES. Clinical outcomes out to 4years were assessed. The primary end point was the composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction and target-lesion revascularization. Secondary end points were target lesion revascularization and definite or probable stent thrombosis. RESULTS Of 1094 patients with diabetes included in the present analysis, 657 received biodegradable polymer DES and 437 durable polymer SES. At 4years, the incidence of the primary end point was similar with BP-DES versus SES (hazard ratio=0.95, 95% CI=0.74-1.21, P=0.67). Target lesion revascularization was also comparable between the groups (hazard ratio=0.89, 95% CI=0.65-1.22, P=0.47). Definite or probable stent thrombosis was significantly reduced among patients treated with BP-DES (hazard ratio=0.52, 95% CI=0.28-0.96, P=0.04), a difference driven by significantly lower stent thrombosis rates with BP-DES between 1 and 4years (hazard ratio=0.15, 95% CI=0.03-0.70, P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS In patients with diabetes, biodegradable polymer DES, compared to durable polymer SES, were associated with comparable overall clinical outcomes during follow-up to 4years. Rates of stent thrombosis were significantly lower with BP-DES.
