Founding Members

The founding members of the Niagara Peninsula Joint Committee On Higher Education. The two men on the right are Ivan Buchanan and Fred Campbell. The Committee later grew into the Board of Governors which was then renamed the Board of Trustees.

Founding Figures

Pictured here from left to right are: Premier John Robarts, Mrs. Grover Egertor of the Allanburg Women's Institute, the woman who first came up with the idea of forming a University in the Niagara Region, Mrs. Bearss, the former chairwoman of the Women's Institute when the project was proposed, and Dr. Arthur A. Schmon, chairman of the Founder's Committee. This photo was taken at a dinner in Niagara Falls in 1963 that marked the official launch of the Brock University Project.

A special meeting of several Founders Committee members took place at Arthur A. Schmon's House in Niagara on the Lake immediately after the announcement in September of 1963 that Dr. James Alexander Gibson would be the first president of Brock University as of January 1964. President's Portrait

On Tuesday, February 10th, 1970, Chairman of the Board, D. Whiting Lathrop presented a portrait of Dr. Gibson to the University. The plaque reads: Dr. James A. Gibson First President and Vice Chancellor of Brock University by Ian Henderson Artist in Residence 1969-1970 Presented to the University by the Board of Governors February 1970 The portrait hung in Dr. Gibson's waiting room until the end of his presidency where it was relocated to H-Block in MacKenzie Chown.

Henry Dalton McAneney, the last president of Hesperian College

Portrait of Henry Dalton McAneney, the last president of Hesperian College, taken about 1887. He became president of Hesperian College in 1892 and served three years until 1895.
