Two landing sites were chosen in Tanzania for the 4-beaches survey. The former, Ihale, is a large one with an avarage of 120 boats and direct connections to the fish processing factories. The latter, Mwasonge, is one of the smallest landing sites in the Mwanza region with totally different characteristics. This book section aims to analyse the results from these two sites in the context of the co-management potentialities in Tanzania and more generally on the Lake Victoria region.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the implications of the fish export trade on the fishers and the fisheries resources of Lake Victoria, Uganda with respect to sustainability. Eight fish processing factories and ninety fishers were qualitatively investigated. Socio-economic characteristics of fishers and the economic characteristics of fish factories formed a basis for the analysis. Results of the research indicate that there is a relationship between the growth in fish export trade, particularly the growth in industrial fish processing (for export) and declining fisheries resources of the lake. However, whether or not that impact is positive or negative, and to what extent there is an impact, is highly dependent upon the underlying socio-economic considerations of the fishers to the process. The fish-ban imposed by the European Union countries was particularly decried by fishers and factory owners as the main cause for the present poverty among the fishers. Fundamentally, several conflicting issues: ecological, physical and economic activities are a threat to the sustainability of the Lake Victoria fisheries, and for all that depend on and interact with the lake. There is urgent need to address the immediate issue of the growing riparian population and the global fish trade, to educate and train all the relevant actors in appropriate fisheries management techniques. Attitudes of fishers towards the fish factory developments are positive and this is a way forward for co-management for the sustainability of the fisheries resource.

Esse estudo tem como objetivo analisar o fenômeno da pluriatividade nos pequenos estabelecimentos familiares do espaço rural do município de Nova Friburgo, localizado na região Serrana do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Retomando a ênfase (presente em trabalho anterior) nos efeitos sociais promovidos pela inserção do espaço rural municipal em uma lógica de mercado, e, levando em consideração as cautelas que devem ser tomadas, no âmbito nacional, na utilização de tal noção, a nossa intenção foi a de questionarmos as valorações que vêm sendo atribuídas a esse fenômeno (de possibilidade de diversificação de emprego e renda; melhoria das condições de vida das populações rurais; e, até mesmo, do estabelecimento de um espaço rural dotado de múltiplas funções), a partir de uma realidade como a friburguense. Esta se, por um lado, é marcada pela significativa expressão espacial dos pequenos estabelecimentos familiares e por um quadro econômico, relativamente, diversificado, por outro lado, também, sofre os efeitos da implementação de um modelo de modernização da agricultura, extremamente excludente e desigual, e, em menor escala, do avanço de um intenso processo de urbanização. Analisado como estratégia de sobrevivência e reprodução no recorte espacial mencionado, os desdobramentos do fenômeno da pluriatividade identificados no mesmo, de certo, complexificam a realidade estudada, ficando a dialética entre relações capitalistas e não-capitalistas, balizada, grosso modo, pela permanência da agricultura com ênfase no trabalho familiar, de um lado, e pela expansão de uma lógica urbano-industrial que, além (e para além) de relações setoriais, também, envolve a inserção de membros das famílias dos pequenos produtores em outras atividades, não-agrícolas, de outro. Para que fosse atingido, portanto, o objetivo proposto, a operacionalização adotada consistiu tanto no levantamento bibliográfico acerca da temática escolhida quanto na realização de vários trabalhos de campo, direcionados a pequenos estabelecimentos familiares de algumas localidades dos vários distritos do município, assim como a órgãos públicos, ligados à produção agrícola, ao turismo e às indústrias de confecções de moda íntima.

A recuperação de fábricas falidas pelos próprios trabalhadores, que assumem de alguma maneira os meios de produção e retomam as atividades da empresa, é um fenômeno que se tornou recorrente no Brasil a partir década de 90, no contexto de abertura do mercado e crise econômica. Esta investigação parte da experiência da FACIT, em Juiz de Fora/MG, considerando-a no decorrer de sua história, antes e depois da autogestão, em busca dos significados atribuídos pelos trabalhadores à experiência que vivenciaram e suas trajetórias profissionais e de grupo. A compreensão dessa experiência referencia-se na história mais geral do trabalho e de suas transformações no capitalismo contemporâneo, bem como das experiências de autogestão e autonomia dos trabalhadores no interior desse modo de produção. Considera-se o trabalho categoria central na estruturação das trajetórias e identidade dos trabalhadores, sendo a iniciativa de retomarem a produção de empresas falidas uma saída que se impôs com a crise da sociedade salarial, enquanto tentativa de conquista coletiva dos meios de vida. Nesta nova situação, quando se veem proprietários das instalações e reiniciam a produção sem os antigos patrões ou seus representantes imediatos, os trabalhadores trazem consigo suas trajetórias pretéritas forjadas no reino da heterogestão, dificultando a compreensão precisa do que representa a autogestão da empresa. Habituados ao chão-da-fábrica, lugar que até então podiam ocupar na divisão do trabalho da empresa, encontram-se frente à tarefa de assumirem também a gestão da empresa. Entre o chão e a gestão da fábrica, uma nova trajetória se ensaia, com suas contradições e ambiguidades.

The northern quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria, ranges along the Atlantic Coast of North America from the Canadian Maritimes to Florida, while the southern quahog, M. campechiensis, ranges mostly from Florida to southern Mexico. The northern quahog was fished by native North Americans during prehistoric periods. They used the meats as food and the shells as scrapers and as utensils. The European colonists copied the Indians treading method, and they also used short rakes for harvesting quahogs. The Indians of southern New England and Long Island, N.Y., made wampum from quahog shells, used it for ornaments and sold it to the colonists, who, in turn, traded it to other Indians for furs. During the late 1600’s, 1700’s, and 1800’s, wampum was made in small factories for eventual trading with Indians farther west for furs. The quahoging industry has provided people in many coastal communities with a means of earning a livelihood and has given consumers a tasty, wholesome food whether eaten raw, steamed, cooked in chowders, or as stuffed quahogs. More than a dozen methods and types of gear have been used in the last two centuries for harvesting quahogs. They include treading and using various types of rakes and dredges, both of which have undergone continuous improvements in design. Modern dredges are equipped with hydraulic jets and one type has an escalator to bring the quahogs continuously to the boats. In the early 1900’s, most provinces and states established regulations to conserve and maximize yields of their quahog stocks. They include a minimum size, now almost universally a 38-mm shell width, and can include gear limitations and daily quotas. The United States produces far more quahogs than either Canada or Mexico. The leading producer in Canada is Prince Edward Island. In the United States, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island lead in quahog production in the north, while Virginia and North Carolina lead in the south. Connecticut and Florida were large producers in the 1990’s. The State of Tabasco leads in Mexican production. In the northeastern United States, the bays with large openings, and thus large exchanges of bay waters with ocean waters, have much larger stocks of quahogs and fisheries than bays with small openings and water exchanges. Quahog stocks in certified beds have been enhanced by transplanting stocks to them from stocks in uncertified waters and by planting seed grown in hatcheries, which grew in number from Massachusetts to Florida in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Esta dissertação discute os possíveis delineamentos epidemiológicos e estratégias de análise de dados capazes de apreender as funções de ocorrência de interesse nos estudos de fatores de risco para a prescrição médica inadequada as crianças com infecção respirat6ria aguda, atendidas na rede ambulatorial. Para tal, os principais marcos teóricos que devem nortear a construção de um desenho de estudo epidemiológico são apresentados, assim como as diferentes etapas que devem ser consideradas quando se esta planejando um processo de analise estatística de dados em estudos epidemiológicos. A partir da elaboração de um modelo teórico-conceitual que represente as relações entre os diversos fatores que parecem estar envolvidos com a prescrição e o consumo de medicamentos, diferentes estratégias de pesquisa e pianos de analise são discutidos, alertando-se para os principais problemas a serem evitados quando se busca um estudo com validade e precisão entre satisfatórias.

Investigations were conducted to find the variability of processed shrimps with respect to two quality characteristics, namely, the numbers of deteriorated and discoloured pieces. Samples were collected for three days from two arbitrarily selected processing factories from Cochin at the pre-freezing stages. Results show that both the quality characteristics vary significantly between different size-grades, but while the variation in the number of deteriorated pieces between days is not significant, the variation in the number of discoloured pieces between days is significant.

The paper presents the results of a bacteriological survey carried out on 2,917 samples of frozen prawn, 55 samples of raw material, 35 samples of water, 4 samples of ice and 42 samples of various equipment used for processing. The survey covered a period of three years (1960-63) and comprised of samples collected from five of the leading processing factories in Cochin. Frozen products tested consisted of headless (marine and fresh water), peeled and deveined and cooked frozen samples. Statistical analysis of the data shows that there is no significant variation between samples and between factories with respect to product quality. The standard plate count varied between 1.0x10(4 superscript) and 1.0x10(6 superscript) per gram for headless and between 1.0x10(4 superscript) and 1.0x10(7 superscript) for peeled and deveined and cooked frozen samples. Majority of the samples had bacterial load well within the limits prescribed for such products.

An attempt has been made in the present study to estimate and describe in detail the nature and extent of contamination of processed fishery products. In large scale prawn processing when the preprocess preparation is elaborate, the industry in India has found it advantageous to establish the primary processing centers away from the processing factories. The data collected have clearly indicated that if such processing centers are not properly organized there is a possibility of greater contamination of the products at this stage. The data collected during the course of this investigation have given the basis for the measures to be taken for the maintenance of bacterial quality of prawn during different stages of processing.

A process is described for isolation of edible protein from blanch liquor, which is discarded as a waste at present from prawn canning factories. The protein isolated is colourless and odourless and contains an appreciable amount of salt from the brine used for blanching prawns. It is comparable to fish protein concentrate in amino acid composition.

Implications of the fish export trade on the people and the fisheries resource of Lake Victoria, Uganda were examined. Eight fish processing factories and ninety fishers were analyzed in terms of socio-economic characteristics of fishers and the economic characteristics of fish factories. Results indicated that industrial fish processors in Uganda are presently the main link between the artisanal fisher-folk and the overseas export markets. Their entry into the market has stabilized and expanded the fisher-folk market and average earnings. Fishers attributed improvement in incomes and living standards (76%) to positive changes in the fish market (78%) in the last 5 years (1994-1999). Ugandan fisher-folk communities are not seriously affected by the Nile perch exports (73%) because they normally have easy access to cheap fish at prices much less than urban prices and; depend mainly on alternative fish species of less export value. The price of Nile perch influences positively the price of Tilapia

It is now clear that fisheries resources are among the key assets contributing to the national development objective of poverty eradication through providing food, employment, income and export earnings. It was recently reported in the papers that monthly fish exports had increased by 23% and fetched about US$ 10 Million during the month of November 2001 alone. This value may be underestimated as it is based solely on recorded exports from fish processing factories numbering 12. Although fisheries resources are renewable they can be depleted through unsustainable exploitation. It is therefore important to ensure that there is guided development and management of this asset so that it can continue contributing to the livelihood of the people who depend on it. Therefore, FIRRI contributes to the fisheries sub-sector developmental objective of ensuring increased and sustainable fishery production and utilization by providing information to guide sustainable management of capture fisheries resources and development of aquaculture.
