Bloch-Kohn and Wannier-Kohn functions in one dimension

Bloch and Wannier functions of the Kohn type for a quite general one-dimensional Hamiltonian with inversion symmetry are studied. Important clarifications on null minigaps and the symmetry of those functions are given, with emphasis on the Kronig-Penney model. The lack of a general selection rule on the miniband index for optical transitions between edge states in semiconductor superlattices is discussed. A direct method for the calculation of Wannier-Kohn functions is presented.

Injuries caused by scorpionfishes and (Scorpaena plumieri Bloch, 1789 Scorpaena brasiliensis Cuvier 1829) in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (Brazilian coast): epidemiologic, clinic and therapeutic aspects of 23 stings in humans

Fishes of the family Scorpaenidae are responsible for severe injuries and occasionally deaths in humans around the world. The more venomous fishes on the Brazilian coast and in the Southwestern Atlantic region are classified in the genus Scorpaena (family Scorpaenidae). However, there are few studies on the venomous apparatus, the effects of the venom, or clinical aspects of human envenoming provoked by Atlantic scorpionfishes.In this communication, the authors present 23 accidents caused by scorpionfishes of the genus Scorpaena among fishermen, and report the species that provoked the injuries, the circumstances of contacts, the clinical aspects observed and the therapeutic measures utilized for control of the symptoms of the victims. The intense pain and the systemic findings observed in the patients were very frequent and we think that the injuries provoked by scorpionfishes should be considered the most important manifestations caused by venomous fishes of the East Atlantic Ocean. Follicular diameter range based on morphological features in Synbranchus marmoratus (Bloch, 1795) (Teleostei, Synbranchiformes, Synbranchidae) from the South-central region of Brazil

The morphological characteristics of Synbranchus marmoratus female germ cells in various development stages were described in details; then measurements of ovarian follicle diameters were taken from primary and secondary growth as during these development stages the oocyte size varied considerably along the fish growth. The results were correlated to total fish length, using the individuals division in six size classes. It was possible to group oocytes by stages according to histological characteristics but not according to morphometric diameter, as there was a wide variation in diameter in each stage and overlap between different maturation stages. These data make available new information on the reproductive biology of Synbranchidae. (c) 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

CONDITION of Hoplias aff. malabaricus (BLOCH, 1794) IN TWO COASTAL STREAMS of ITANHAEM RIVER BASIN, BRAZIL

The main purpose of this research was to measure the condition of the fish species Hoplias aff. malabaricus collected in Aguapeu River (black waters) and Branco River (white waters), which belong to Itanhaem River basin, a coastal watershed in São Paulo state, Brazil. Individuals of Hoplias aff. malabaricus were sampled by using gill nets, monthly from March 2001 to February 2002. The Condition Factor was obtained through the length-weight relationship, assuming that the higher the mass for a given length, the better the condition of the fish. The Condition Factor was compared among fishes from both rivers, resulting that Branco River individuals have significantly lower condition. Limnological aspects were studied from May 2001 to November 2002 and some show significant differences between Aguapeu River and Branco River. These were salinity, do and total organic N, which the higher values being observed in Branco River propably due to estuarine waters influence. However, the lower condition of the Branco River fishes should also be an effect of a disturbance due to the sand mining in this river, since this activity cause important alterations to the environment, affecting the whole biota, included aquatic macrophytes, invertebrates and fishes.

THE GREEN-FUNCTION IN THE BLOCH-NORDSIECK MODEL FOR QED(3)

The electron Green's function is obtained in the Bloch-Nordsieck approximation of three-dimensional QED. Dimensional regularization is used in the intermediate stages of calculation.

Incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome): a case report.

A syndrome--incontinentia pigmenti--of probable genetic etiology, is discussed and a new case report presented. The syndrome presents systemic and dental manifestations, which are separate although similar to those found in other disease entities, i.e., congenital syphilis, hereditary ectodermal dysplasia.

Histochemical study of muscle fiber types in Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, 1795

The myotomal muscle of Synbranchus marmoratus was investigated using histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions. This musculature is composed of a superficial red compartment, uniformly distributed around the trunk circumferentially and also in the lateral line. The red compartment fibers are small in diameter and have an oxidative metabolism, a high rate of glycogen and a negative reaction to alkaline and acid myofibrillar ATPase (mATPase). The white muscle forms the bulk of the muscle mass. Its fibers are large in diameter and have a glycolytic metabolism, a negative reaction to glycogen, a strong reaction to alkaline mATPase and a negative reaction to acid mATPase. Between these two compartments there is an intermediate layer of fibers presenting a mosaic metabolism pattern with a high rate of glycogen. These fibers stained moderately for alkaline and acid m-ATPase. Several clusters of red muscles were observed inside the white muscle. Each cluster is composed of three fiber types, with a predominance of red and intermediate fibers. Reactivity to anti-MHC BA-D5 was positive only in the intermediate fibers. Reactivity to anti-MHC SC-71 was negative in all fiber types.

Its focus is based on the Ernst Kris original work, therefore it intends to present certain basis of his aesthetical thinking. In this case, however, it will suggest one certain reading which emphasizes the problem of sublimation as a drive destination-and not as a defense mechanism-in within this relationship between art and psychoanalysis; hence, it brings out a phenomenon that crosses the psychoanalytical thinking since its first conception.

A pesca e os aspectos reprodutivos da jatuarana escama grossa Hemiodus unimaculatus (Bloch, 1794) na área de influência da usina hidrelétrica de Tucuruí-Pará

A Hemiodus unimaculatus (Jatuarana escama grossa) é um hemiodontideo bentopelágica, de relevante importância comercial, gerando alimento, emprego e renda para pescadores na área de influência do reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí (UHE Tucuruí). O presente estudo analisou a pesca e os aspectos reprodutivos, como a estrutura em comprimento e peso da população, a relação peso-comprimento, o comprimento médio de primeira maturação gonadal (L50), a proporção entre sexos e o período de reprodução na área de influência da UHE Tucuruí (a montante, no reservatório e a jusante). Foram analisadas séries temporais de dados de desembarque (período de 2000 a 2008) e entrevistas no período de julho a outubro de 2010 nas três áreas da UHE Tucuruí, com informações que versaram sobre o local e caracterização da pescaria e apetrechos de pesca. Para o estudo sobre os aspectos reprodutivos, os exemplares analisados foram coletados mensalmente, no período de janeiro de 2006 a dezembro de 2007, no reservatório e a jusante da barragem. A H. unimaculatus foi desembarcada nas três áreas de influência da UHE Tucuruí durante o ano todo, sendo a montante responsável pela maior produção. Existe sazonalidade estatisticamente significante ao longo do ano, caracterizando picos de produção, sendo a montante nos meses de maio, junho e outubro, no reservatório em janeiro e de maio a junho, e, a jusante de maio a agosto. Os principais locais para a captura dos cardumes são os beiradões e as praias, sendo o principal procedimento de captura a malhadeira fixa. O principal porto de desembarque está localizado no município de Itupiranga, que fica a montante da UHE Tucuruí. Dentre os exemplares capturados no reservatório (429) e a jusante (545), a maior variação ocorreu no reservatório (12.5 a 29 cm de comprimento total). A relação peso-comprimento apresentou alometria negativa nas duas subáreas. O L50 considerado para sexos agrupado foi de 27.6 cm no reservatório e de 22.2 cm a jusante. A proporção entre sexos para o total de indivíduos foi favorável às fêmeas nas duas áreas, sendo de 1.6 e 1.9 no reservatório e a jusante, respectivamente. O período reprodutivo foi registrado no mês de março (período chuvoso) no reservatório e a jusante de novembro a março (períodos transacional seco/chuvoso e chuvoso). Considerando que a espécie ocorre em todas as áreas da UHE Tucuruí e a tendência da produção anual desembarcada está aumentando continuamente a montante, é reforçada a necessidade de implementar infraestrutura local, e medidas de ordenamento que visem à sustentabilidade da pescaria.

Estrutura fina do espermatozóide de Acestrorhynchus falcatus Bloch (Teleostei, Characidae) da região norte do Brasil

Spermatozoa of amazon fish, Acestrorhynchus falcatus Bloch, 1794 were investigated by optical microscopy (DIC) and electron microscopy (TEM). Spermatozoa have no acrosome, the head is ovoid, and the midpiece region cylindrical, contains spherical mitochondria. The centriolar complex is located at the lateral side of the nucleus, formed by nine peripheral pairs of microtubules and arranged in a right angle to each other. The flagellum consists of nine pairs of peripheral and two central microtubules.
