Using a classic grounded theory methodology (CGT), this study explores the phenomenon of moral shielding within mental health multidisciplinary teams (MDTS). The study was located within three catchment areas engaged in acute mental health service practice. The main concern identified was the maintenance of a sense of personal integrity during situational binds. Through theoretical sampling thirty two practitioners, including; doctors, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, counsellors and psychologists, where interviewed face to face. In addition, emergent concepts were identified through observation of MDTs in clinical and research practice. Following a classic grounded theory methodology, data collection and analysis occurred simultaneously. A constant comparative approach was adopted and resulted in the immergence of three sub- core categories; moral abdication, moral hinting and pseudo-compliance. Moral abdication seeks to re-position within an event in order to avoid or deflect the initial obligation to act, it is a strategy used to remove or reduce moral ownership. Moral gauging represents the monitoring of an event with the goal of judging the congruence of personal principles and commitments with that of other practitioners. This strategy is enacted in a bid to seek allies for the support of a given moral position. Pseudo-compliance represents behaviour that hides desired principles and commitments in order to shield them from challenge. This strategy portrays agreement with the dominant position within the MDT, whilst holding a contrary position. It seeks to preserve a reservoir of emotional energy required to maintain a sense of personal integrity. Practitioners who were successful in enacting moral shielding were found to not experience significant emotional distress associated with the phenomenon of moral distress; suggesting that these practitioners had found mechanisms to manage situational binds that threatened their sense of personal integrity.

A semi-phenomenological molecular model is presented, which is capable of describing with the use of analytical formulae, the wideband dielectric(1) and far-infrared spectra of ordinary and heavy water. In the model the vector of a dipole moment is presented as a sum of two components. The absolute value of the first one is constant; the second one changes harmonically with time. The key aspect of this work is consideration of FIR spectra due to the second component. In the context of the modified hybrid model presented in the work, reorientation of the dipoles in the rectangular potential well is considered, as a result of which the librational (near 700 cm (-1)) and translational (near 200 cm (-1)) absorption bands and the microwave Debye relaxation spectrum arise. It is shown that the time-dependent part of a dipole moment contributes most to the translational band, the relevant mechanism is taken to be stretching vibration of the H-bonded molecules. Previous linear-response molecular models were unsuccessful in describing this band (in heavy water) in terms of the complex dielectric permittivity. The spatial and time scales characteristic of water are estimated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an overview of R-matrix theory of electron scattering by diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The paper commences with a detailed discussion of the fixed-nuclei approximation which in recent years has been used as the basis of the most accurate ab initio calculations. This discussion includes an overview of the computer codes which enable electron collisions with both diatomic and polyatomic molecules to be calculated. Nuclear motion including rotational and vibrational excitation and dissociation is then discussed. In non-resonant energy regions, or when the scattered electron energy is not close to thresholds, the adiabatic-nuclei approximation can be successfully used. However, when these conditions are not applicable, non-adiabatic R-matrix theory must be used and a detailed discussion of this theory is given. Finally, recent applications of the theory to treat electron scattering by polyatomic molecules are reviewed and a detailed comparison of R-matrix calculations and experimental measurements for water is presented.

The FLASH XUV-free electron laser has been used to irradiate solid samples at intensities of the order 10(16) W cm(-2) at a wavelength of 13.5 nm. The subsequent time integrated XUV emission was observed with a grating spectrometer. The electron temperature inferred from plasma line ratios was in the range 5-8 eV with electron density in the range 10(21)-10(22) cm(-3). These results are consistent with the saturation of absorption through bleaching of the L-edge by intense photo-absorption reported in an earlier publication. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Neutrons are unique particles to probe samples in many ?elds of research ranging from biology to material sciences to engineering and security applications. Access to bright, pulsed sources is currently
limited to large accelerator facilities and there has been a growing need for compact sources over the recent years. Short pulse laser driven neutron sources could be a compact and relatively cheap way to
produce neutrons with energies in excess of 10 MeV. For more than a decade experiments have tried to obtain neutron numbers suf?cient for applications. Our recent experiments demonstrated an ion acceleration mechanism based on the concept of relativistic transparency. Using this new mechanism, we produced an intense beam of high energy (up to 170 MeV) deuterons directed into a Be converter to
produce a forward peaked neutron ?ux with a record yield, on the order of 1010 n=sr. We present results comparing the two acceleration mechanisms and the ?rst short pulse laser generated neutron radiograph.

A method of preparation of strontium sulphide phosphors doped with europium is given. Nitrogen laser excited fluorescence emission spectra of these phosphors in the visible region are recorded. A band with line structure in the region 350-430 nm and a new broad band at 460 nm are observed. The splitting pattern for the 6p levels of Eu 2+ are given.

Fluorescence of BaS: Sm phosphor has been studied using a pulsed Nitrogen laser (337.1 nm) as the excitation source. The spectrum consists of a broad band in the region 540–660nm superposed by the characteristic Sm3+ lines. Energy level splitting pattern of Sm3+ due to crystal field effects has been calculated and relevent field parameters are evaluated. Analysis shows that Sm3+ takes up Ba2+ substitutional sites.

Calculations are reported of the magnetic anisotropy energy of two-dimensional (2D) Co nanostructures on a Pt(111) substrate. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of the 2D Co clusters strongly depends on their size and shape, and rapidly decreases with increasing cluster size. The PMA calculated is in reasonable agreement with experimental results. The sensitivity of the results to the Co-Pt spacing at the interface is also investigated and, in particular, for a complete Co monolayer we note that the value of the spacing at the interface determines whether PMA or in-plane anisotropy occurs. We find that the PMA can be greatly enhanced by the addition of Pt adatoms to the top surface of the 2D Co clusters. A single Pt atom can induce in excess of 5 meV to the anisotropy energy of a cluster. In the absence of the Pt adatoms the PMA of the Co clusters falls below 1 meV/Co atom for clusters of about 10 atoms whereas, with Pt atoms added to the surface of the clusters, a PMA of 1 meV/Co atom can be maintained for clusters as large as about 40 atoms. The effect of placing Os atoms on the top of the Co clusters is also considered. The addition of 5d atoms and clusters on the top of ferromagnetic nanoparticles may provide an approach to tune the magnetic anisotropy and moment separately.

We present evidence that large-scale spatial coherence of 40 Hz oscillations can emerge dynamically in a cortical mean field theory. The simulated synchronization time scale is about 150 ms, which compares well with experimental data on large-scale integration during cognitive tasks. The same model has previously provided consistent descriptions of the human EEG at rest, with tranquilizers, under anesthesia, and during anesthetic-induced epileptic seizures. The emergence of coherent gamma band activity is brought about by changing just one physiological parameter until cortex becomes marginally unstable for a small range of wavelengths. This suggests for future study a model of dynamic computation at the edge of cortical stability.
Optical energy storage properties of Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) persistent luminescence materials
Resumo:
The details of the mechanism of persistent luminescence were probed by investigating the trap level structure of Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) materials (R: Y, La-Lu, excluding Pm and Eu) with thermoluminescence (TL) measurements and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The TL results indicated that the shallowest traps for each Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) material above room temperature were always ca. 0.7 eV corresponding to a strong TL maximum at ca. 90 A degrees C. This main trap energy was only slightly modified by the different co-dopants, which, in contrast, had a significant effect on the depths of the deeper traps. The combined results of the trap level energies obtained from the experimental data and DFT calculations suggest that the main trap responsible for the persistent luminescence of the Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) materials is created by charge compensation lattice defects, identified tentatively as oxygen vacancies, induced by the R(3+) co-dopants.

We investigated noble gas copper bonds in linear complexes represented by the NgCuX general formula in which Ng and X stand for a noble gas (neon, argon, krypton, or xenon) and a halogen (fluorine, chlorine or bromine), respectively, by coupled cluster methods and modified cc-pVQZ basis sets. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) shows a linear relation between the dissociation energy or noble gas-copper bonds and the amount of electronic charge transferred mainly from the noble gas to copper during complexation. Large changes in the QTAIM quadrupole moments of copper and noble gases resulting from this bonding and a comparison between NgCuX and NgNaCl systems indicate that these noble gas-copper bonds should be better interpreted as predominantly covalent. Finally, QTAIM atomic dipoles of noble gases in NgNaCl systems agree satisfactorily with atomic dipoles given by a simple model for these NgNa van der Waals bonds.

We review a formalism of superstring quantization with manifest six-dimensional spacetime supersymmetry, and apply it to AdS(3) x S-3 backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond flux. The resulting description is a conformal field theory based on a sigma model whose target space is a certain supergroup SU' (2\2).

In this work we propose the study of the spectroscopy properties and the energy level location of Ce(3+) and Pr(3+) in Gd(2)O(2)S, along with the effects of Ce(4+) (Ce(2)O(2)S(2)) incorporation in Gd(2)O(2)S and Gd(2)O(2)S: Pr(3+) in order to understand the formation and position of the associated defects energy levels in relation to the band structure of Gd(2)O(2)S and Pr(3+) energy levels. Ce-, Pr(3+)-doped and Pr(3+), Ce-doped Gd(2)O(2)S were prepared by the sulfidization of a basic gadolinium carbonate with S(8) using H(2)/N(2) (3.0/97.0%) and air during the firing of the precursor. Samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction in order to guarantee the formation of the Gd(2)O(2)S single phase. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and luminescent measurements (emission/excitation) were used to locate Ce(3+), Pr(3+) and defects energy levels in relation to the band structure of Gd(2)O(2)S. We develop a systematic scheme to treat binary collisions between ultracold atoms in the presence of a strong laser field, tuned to the red of the trapping transition. We assume that the Rabi frequency is much less than the spacing between adjacent bound-state resonances, In this approach we neglect fine and hyperfine structures, but consider fully the three-dimensional aspects of the scattering process, up to the partial d wave. We apply the scheme to calculate the S matrix elements up to the second order in the ratio between the Rabi frequency and the laser detuning, We also obtain, fur this simplified multichannel model, the asymmetric line shapes of photoassociation spectroscopy, and the modification of the scattering length due to the light field at low, but finite, entrance kinetic energy. We emphasize that the present calculations can be generalized to treat more realistic models, and suggest how to carry out a thorough numerical comparison to this semianalytic theory. We have used the periodic quantum-mechanical method with density functional theory at the B3LYP level in order to study TiO2/Sn doped (1 1 0) surfaces and have investigated the structural, electronic and energy band properties of these oxides. Our calculated relaxation directions for TiO2 is the experimental one and is also in agreement with other theoretical results. We also observe for the doped systems relaxation of lattice positions of the atoms. Modification of Sri, O and Ti charges depend on the planes and positions of the substituted atoms. Doping can modify the Fermi levels, energy gaps as well as the localization and composition of both valence and conduction band main components. Doping can also modify the chemical, electronic and optical properties of these oxides surfaces increasing their suitability for use as gas sensors and optoelectronic devices. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
