Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

Erbium L-3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were performed on rare earth doped fluorosilicate and fluoroborate glasses and glass ceramics. The well known nucleating effects of erbium ions for the crystallization of cubic lead fluoride (based on x-ray diffraction measurements) and the fact that the rare earth ions are present in the crystalline phase (as indicated by Er3+ emission spectra) seem in contradiction with the present EXAFS analysis, which indicates a lack of medium range structural ordering around the Er3+ ions and suggests that the lead fluoride crystallization does not occur in the nearest neighbor distance of the rare earth ion. Molecular dynamics simulations of the devitrification process of a lead fluoride glass doped with Er3+ ions were performed, and results indicate that Er3+ ions lower the devitrification temperature of PbF2, in good agreement with the experimental results. The genuine role of Er3+ ions in the devitrification process of PbF2 has been investigated. Although Er3+ ions could indeed act as seeds for crystallization, as experiments suggest, molecular dynamics simulation results corroborate the experimental EXAFS observation that the devitrification does not occur at its nearest neighbor distance. The problems of wave propagation and power flow in the distribution network composed of an overhead wire parallel to the surface of the ground have not been satisfactorily solved. While a complete solution of the actual problem is impossible, as it is explained in the famous Carson's paper (1926), the solution of the problem, where the actual earth is replaced by a plane homogenous semi-infinite solid, is of considerable interest. In this paper, a power flow algorithm in distribution networks with earth return, based on backward-forward technique, is discussed. In this novel use of the technique, the ground is explicitly represented. In addition, an iterative method for determining impedance for modelling ground effect in the extended power flow algorithm is suggested. Results obtained from single-wire and three-wire studies using IEEE test networks are presented and discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Rare earth (RE) ions have spectroscopic characteristics to emit light in narrow lines, which makes RE complexes with organic ligands candidates for full color OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) applications. In particular, beta-diketone rare earth (RE(3+)) complexes show high fluorescence emission efficiency due to the high absorption coefficient of the beta-diketone and energy transfer to the central ion. In this work, the fabrication and the electroluminescent properties of devices containing a double and triple-layer OLED using a new beta-diketone complex, [Eu(bmdm)(3)(tppo)(2)], as transporting and emitting layers are compared and discussed. The double and triple-layer devices based on this complex present the following configurations respectively: device 1: ITO/TPD (40 nm)/[Eu(bmdm)(3)(tppo)(2)] (40 nm)/Al (150 nm); device 2: ITO/TPD (40 nm)/[Eu(bmdm)(3) (tppo)(2)] (40 nm)/Alq(3) (20 nm)/Al (150 nm) and device 3: ITO/TPD (40 nm)/bmdm-ligand (40 nm)/Al (150 nm), were TPD is (N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenil-4,4-diamine) and bmdm is butyl methoxy-dibenzoyl-methane. All the films were deposited by thermal evaporation carried out in a high vacuum system. These devices exhibit high intensity photo- (PL) and electro-luminescent (EL) emission. Electroluminescence spectra show emission from Eu(3+) ions attributed to the (5)D(0) to (7)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions with the hypersensitive (5)D(o) -> (7)F(2) transition (around 612 nm) as the most prominent one. Moreover, a transition from (5)D(1) to (7)F(1) is also observed around 538 nm. The OLED light emission was almost linear with the current density. The EL CIE chromaticity coordinates (X = 0.66 and Y = 0.33) show the dominant wavelength, lambda(d) = 609 nm, and the color gamut achieved by this device is 0.99 in the CIE color space. In this paper, the influence on optical properties of alkali halides such as CsCl in a covalent glassy matrix has been investigated. Chalcogenide glasses belonging to the (GeS2)-(Ga2S3)-CsCI system with high ratio of CsCl present an entire transparency in the visible range. These glasses maintain good transmission up to 12 mu m. Furthermore, the thermo-mechanical properties and the glass hygroscopicity have been investigated as function of the CsCl amount. This new generation of glasses presents a great interest for optical application. They could be used both for passive applications (multi-spectral imaging) and active applications for rare-earth doping due to their good transmission in the visible range, increasing optical pumping possibilities.

In the present work is analyzed the contribution of the Moon on the collisional process of the Earth with asteroids (NEOs). The dynamical system adopted is the restricted four-body problem Sun-Earth-Moon-particle. Using a simple analytical approach one can verify that, the orbit of an object can be significantly affected by the Moon's gravitational field when their relative velocity is smaller than 5 km/s. Therefore, the present work is based on hypothetical asteroids whose velocities relative to Moon are of the order of 1 km/s. In fact, there are several real objects (NEOs) with such velocities at the point they cross the Earth's orbit. The net results obtained indicate that the Moon helps to avoid collisions (2.6%) more than it contributes to extra collisions (0.6%). (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Several years of total ozone measured from space by the ERS-2 GOME, the Earth Probe TOMS, and the ADEOS TOMS, are compared with high-quality ground-based observations associated with the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC), over an extended latitude range and a variety of geophysical conditions. The comparisons with each spaceborne sensor are combined altogether for investigating their respective solar zenith angle (SZA) dependence, dispersion, and difference of sensitivity. The space- and ground-based data are found to agree within a few percent on average. However, the analysis highlights for both GOME and TOMS several sources of discrepancies: (i) a SZA dependence with TOMS beyond 80° SZA; (ii) a seasonal SZA dependence with GOME beyond 70° SZA; (iii) a difference of sensitivity with GOME at high latitudes; (iv) a difference of sensitivity to low ozone values between satellite and SAOZ sensors around the southern tropics; (v) a north/south difference of TOMS with the ground-based observations; and (vi) internal inconsistencies in GOME total ozone. © 2001 COSPAR. In this work we present results on the preparation of planar waveguides based on HfO2 and HfO2-SiO2. Stable sols containing europium and erbium doped HfO2 nanoparticles have been prepared and characterized. The nanosized sol was either deposited (spin-coating) on quartz substrates or embedded in (3-glycidoxipropil)trimethoxisilane (GPTS) used as a hybrid host for posterior deposition. The refractive index dispersion and luminescence characteristics were determined for the resulting HfO2 films. The optical parameters of the waveguides such as refractive index, thickness and propagation losses were measured for the hybrid composite. The planar waveguides present thickness of a few micra and support well confined propagating modes.

In this work we report on visible upconversion emission in Er 3+-, and Ho3+-doped PbGeO3-PbF 2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics under 980 nm infrared excitation. In erbium-doped vitroceramic samples, blue(410 ran), green(530, and 550 nm) and red(660 nm) emission signals were generated, which were identified as due to the 2H9/2, 2H 11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 transitions to the 4I15/2 ground-state, respectively. Intense red(650 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the 5F5 - 5I8 transition and very small blue(490 nm) and green(540 nm) signals assigned to the 5F 2,3 - 5I8 and 4S2, 5F4 - 5I8 transitions, respectively, were observed in the holmium-doped samples. The 540 nm is the dominant upconversion signal in Ho3+-doped vitroceramics under 850 nm excitation. The dependence of the upconversion processes upon pump power and doping concentration are also investigated, and the main routes for the upconversion excitation processes are also identified. The comparison of the upconversion process in transparent glass ceramics and the precursor glass was also examined and the results revealed that the former present higher upconversion efficiencies.

SAOZ (Systeme d'Analyse par Observations Zenithales) is a ground-based UV-Visible zenith-sky spectrometer installed between 1988 and 1995 at a number of NDSC stations at various latitudes on the globe. The instrument is providing ozone and NO2 vertical columns at sunrise and sunset using the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique in the visible spectral range. The ERS-2 GOME Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) in 1995 was the first satellite mission to provide a global picture of atmospheric NO 2 with reasonable spatial and temporal resolution. It was then followed by SCanning ImAging spectroMeter for Atmospheric ChartographY (SCIAMACHY) onboard ENVISAT in 2002, and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard EOS-AURA in 2004, with a similar capacity to monitor total NO 2. All these instruments are nadir viewing mapping spectrometers, applying the DOAS technique in the visible for deriving the NO2 total column. Here we present the results of NO2 long-term comparisons between GOME and SAOZ for the whole period of GOME operation since 1995 at all latitudes - tropics, mid-latitudes and polar regions - in both hemispheres. Comparisons are also shown with the most recently available SCIAMACHY and OMI data in 2004-2005. Overall, the daytime satellite measurements (around noon) are found consistent with sunrise ground-based data, with an average smaller difference at the tropics and mid-latitudes than in the polar areas in the summer. The agreement is even improved after correcting for the NO2 photochemical change between sunrise and the satellite overpass using a box model. However, some seasonal dependence of the difference between ground-based and satellite total NO2 still remains, related to the accuracy of photochemical simulations and the set of NO2 air mass factors used in the retrievals of both systems.

An alternative transfer strategy to send spacecrafts to stable orbits around the Lagrangian equilibrium points L4 and L5 based in trajectories derived from the periodic orbits around LI is presented in this work. The trajectories derived, called Trajectories G, are described and studied in terms of the initial generation requirements and their energy variations relative to the Earth through the passage by the lunar sphere of influence. Missions for insertion of spacecrafts in elliptic orbits around L4 and L5 are analysed considering the Restricted Three-Body Problem Earth- Moon-particle and the results are discussed starting from the thrust, time of flight and energy variation relative to the Earth. Fabrication and optical characterization of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PbO-GeO2 (PGO) pedestal-type waveguides are investigated in this work. It is important to mention that, to the best of authors' knowledge, the use of PGO pedestal-type waveguide has not been studied before. PGO thin films codoped with Tm3+ and Yb3+ were obtained through RF magnetron sputtering technique. The pedestal profile was obtained using conventional optical lithography procedures, followed by plasma etching and sputtering deposition. The profile of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PGO waveguides was observed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) measurements. Also the infrared and infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescences of Tm3+ ions were measured exciting the samples with a cw 980 nm diode laser. Propagation losses around 11 dB/cm and 9 dB/cm were obtained at 630 and 1050 nm, respectively, for waveguides in the 20-100 μm width range. Single-mode propagation was observed for waveguides width up to 12 μm and 7 μm, at 1050 nm and 630 nm, respectively; larger waveguides width provided multi-mode propagation. The present results corroborate the possibility of using Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped PGO thin films as active waveguide for photonic applications. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
