This study investigated self-esteem in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Fifteen children between the ages of 8 and 12 years diagnosed with DCD were compared with a typically developing group comprising 30 children with average and good motor abilities, using measures of perceived competence, social support and self-esteem. The types of coping strategy generated in response to example vignettes were also compared. There was no significant difference between the groups in global self-esteem, but the children with DCD reported lower athletic and scholastic competence than their typically developing peers. No difference was found between the groups in level of perceived social support. The DCD group generated fewer coping strategies overall, but more passive and avoidant strategies than the typically developing children. The implications of the study are discussed with regard to future research directions, such as the investigation of the effects of motor skill intervention on self-esteem and the development of strategies to protect children's self-esteem.

Esta tese teve como objetivos investigar: (1) as mudanças relacionadas à idade no controle de força e torque isométrico em crianças de diferentes idades em três tarefas manipulativas distintas, e (2) as diferenças no controle de força e torque isométrico, assim como nas respostas neuromusculares, entre crianças com e sem DCD de idade relacionadas em três tarefas manipulativas distintas. Neste sentido, foi realizado um ensaio teórico sobre a criança com Desordem Coordenativa Desenvolvimental (DCD), além de dois estudos experimentais que têm em comum a análise da estrutura da resposta do sistema motor em relação à performance das crianças com e sem DCD, em três tarefas manipulativas distintas de controle de força e torque isométrico, contínuo e constante. No primeiro estudo, foram investigadas as mudanças desenvolvimentais no controle motor usando um delineamento transversal de pesquisa com crianças de 7, 9 e 11 anos de idade, as quais foram incentivadas a manter o controle de força e torque durante vinte segundos nas tarefas de pressão digital, preensão digital em pinça e torque em preensão digital. Os resultados demonstraram que a performance melhorou com o avanço da idade, devido à capacidade do sistema sensório-motor apresentar uma resposta mais irregular e com um perfil de freqüências mais distribuídas. No segundo estudo, o controle de força e torque entre crianças com e sem DCD, com nove anos de idade, foram investigadas. Os participantes realizaram as mesmas tarefas do estudo desenvolvimental e, além disso, respostas neuromusculares foram mapeadas Os resultados não revelaram uma variabilidade maior e irregularidade menor no grupo com DCD nas tarefas de pressão digital e preensão digital em pinça. No entanto, na tarefa de controle de torque em preensão digital, foi identificada uma maior variabilidade e menor irregularidade na resposta motora do grupo com DCD. Os resultados não revelaram uma variabilidade maior e irregularidade menor no grupo com DCD nas tarefas de pressão digital e preensão digital em pinça. No entanto, na tarefa de controle de torque em preensão digital, foi identificada uma maior variabilidade e menor irregularidade na resposta motora do grupo com DCD. Os resultados da análise das respostas neuromusculares sugerem o uso de estratégias distintas entre os grupos, todavia, tais achados não foram conclusivos.

Identificar e analisar o comportamento motor em termos coordenativos em crianças dos 3 aos 6 anos de idade nos concelhos de Rio Maior e Santarém foi um dos nossos propósitos ao iniciar este processo científico. As crianças foram avaliadas com o teste MABC-2, exibindo os resultados do seu padrão motor coordenativo numa amostra representativa da população em causa. Com base nestes resultados analisámos o padrão motor coordenativo em função da idade, sexo, lateralidade. Observámos o comportamento das crianças com provável DCD e risco em termos da preferência e consistência da lateralidade. Posteriormente usando um teste de Midline Crossing procurámos analisar a dinâmica do uso da mão numa vertente de sistemas não lineares. Ainda nesta perspetiva teórica analisámos o equilíbrio, aspeto considerado preocupante nesta desordem para algumas crianças, através da análise de recorrência. Os instrumentos usados diferiram entre estudos em função dos objetivos de cada um: MABC-2, Midline Crossing, Questionário de Van Strien. Outro dos objetivos do nosso estudo recaiu no processo de intervenção junto de crianças em risco ou com provável desordem coordenativa no desenvolvimento. Em relação à nossa amostra encontrámos na literatura uma percentagem similar em termos de incidência de crianças com provável DCD e risco, por sexo e lateralidade. Constatámos que a percentagem de crianças com provável DCD apresenta uma representatividade percentual de acordo com a literatura. Existindo uma maior percentagem de sinistrómanos com provável DCD e do sexo masculino. Verificámos através dos sistemas não lineares que o comportamento das crianças com provável DCD se assemelha às crianças típicas, necessitando de um reforço na intervenção de forma a colmatar algumas das suas dificuldades. Verificámos que as crianças DCD são mais suscetíveis aos constrangimentos extrínsecos. Finalmente concluímos que a intervenção pode criar condições de excelência para modificar os padrões e perfis de comportamento.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is involved in both ozone destruction and global warming. In agricultural soils it is produced by nitrification and denitrification mainly after fertilization. Nitrification inhibitors have been proposed as one of the management tools for the reduction of the potential hazards of fertilizer-derived N2O. Addition of nitrification inhibitors to fertilizers maintains soil N in ammonium form, thereby gaseous N losses by nitrification and denitrification are less likely to occur and there is increased N utilization by the sward. We present a study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) and of the slurry additive Actilith F2 on N2O emissions following application of calcium ammonium nitrate or cattle slurry to a mixed clover/ryegrass sward in the Basque Country. The results indicate that large differences in N2O emission occur depending on fertilizer type and the presence or absence of a nitrification inhibitor. There is considerable scope for immediate reduction of emissions by applying DCD with calcium ammonium nitrate or cattle slurry. DCD, applied at 25 kg ha-1, reduced the amount of N lost as N2O by 60% and 42% when applied with cattle slurry and calcium ammonium nitrate, respectively. Actilith F2 did not reduce N2O emissions and it produced a long lasting mineralization of previously immobilized added N.

Urease inhibitor (UI) and nitrification inhibitor (NI) have the potential to improve N-use efficiency of applied urea and minimize N losses via gaseous emissions of ammonia (NH 3) to the atmosphere and nitrate (NO3-) leaching into surface and ground water bodies. There is a growing interest in the formulations of coating chemical fertilizers with both UI and NI. However, limited information is available on the combined use of UI and NI applied with urea fertilizer. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of treating urea with both UI and NI to minimize NH 3 volatilization. Two experiments were set up in volatilization chambers under controlled conditions to examine this process. In the first experiment, UR was treated with the urease inhibitor NBPT [N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric acid triamide] at a rate of 1060 mg kg -1 urea and/or with the nitrification inhibitor DCD (dicyandiamide) at rates equivalent to 5 or 10% of the urea N. A randomized experimental design with five treatments and five replicates was used: 1) UR, 2) UR + NBPT, 3) UR + DCD 10%, 4) UR + NBPT + DCD 5%, and 5) UR + NBPT + DCD 10%. The fertilizer treatments were applied to the surface of an acidic Red Latosol soil moistened to 60% of the maximum water retention and placed inside volatilization chambers. Controls chambers were added to allow for NH 3 volatilized from unfertilized soil or contained in the air that swept over the soil surface. The second experiment had an additional treatment with surface-applied DCD. The chambers were glass vessels (1.5 L) fit with air inlet and outlet tubings to allow air to pass over the soil. Ammonia volatilized was swept and carried to a flask containing a boric acid solution to trap the gas and then measured daily by titration with a standardized H 2SO 4 solution. Continuous measurements were recorded for 19 and 23 days for the first and second experiment, respectively. The soil samples were then analyzed for UR-, NH4+-, and NO3--N. Losses of NH 3 by volatilization with unamended UR ranged from 28 to 37% of the applied N, with peak of losses observed the third day after fertilization. NBPT delayed the peak of NH 3 losses due to urease inhibition and reduced NH 3 volatilization between 54 and 78% when compared with untreated UR. Up to 10 days after the fertilizer application, NH 3 losses had not been affected by DCD in the UR or the UR + NBPT treatments; thereafter, NH 3 volatilization tended to decrease, but not when DCD was present. As a consequence, the addition of DCD caused a 5-16% increase in NH 3 volatilization losses of the fertilizer N applied as UR from both the UR and the UR + NBPT treatments. Because the effectiveness of NBPT to inhibit soil urease activity was strong only in the first week, it could be concluded that DCD did not affect the action of NBPT but rather, enhanced volatilization losses by maintaining higher soil NH4+ concentration and pH for a longer time. Depending on the combination of factors influencing NH 3 volatilization, DCD could even offset the beneficial effect of NBPT in reducing NH 3 volatilization losses. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), a chronic and usually permanent condition found in children, is characterized by motor impairment that interferes with a child's activities of daily living and with academic achievement. One of the most popular tests for the quantitative diagnosis of DCD is the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC). Based on the Battery's standardized scores, it is possible to identify children with typical development, children at risk of developing DCD, and children with DCD. This article describes a computational system we developed to assist with the analysis of results obtained in the MABC test. The tool was developed for the web environment and its database provides integration of MABC data. Thus, researchers around the world can share data and develop collaborative work in the DCD field. In order to help analysis processes, our system provides services for filtering data to show more specific sets of information and present the results in textual, table, and graphic formats, allowing easier and more comprehensive evaluation of the results.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the emergence and stability of coordination patterns in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) when performing a rhythmic interlimb coordination task on rigid (floor) and elastic (mini-trampoline) surfaces. Twelve typically developing (TD) children and 12 children with DCD were required to clap while jumping under different conditions: in a chosen pattern Free; when the feet touched the surface - Clapping-surface; when the body reached the maximum jumping height, Clapping-jump; and when the feet touched the surface and the body reached the maximum jumping height - Clapping-both. The results showed that the coordination pattern of children with DCD was more variable in the Free, Clapping-surface, and Clapping-jumping conditions and more variable on the mini-trampoline than on the floor under the Free condition when compared with the TD children. Clapping-jumping was more difficult to perform than Clapping-surface for both groups. These findings suggest that the children with DCD were less capable of rhythmically coordinating the jumping-clapping task because they used a type of exploratory strategy regarding the physical properties of the surfaces, whereas the TD children used a type of adaptive strategy displaying behavior that was more consistent across the tasks/environmental demands. In the presence of developmental dyslexia, there is high probability of motor difficulties being present as well purposes: The purposes of this study were to characterize and compare the motor performance of students with dyslexia with students with good academic performance and to identify the presence of the DCD (developmental coordination disorder) co-occurring with developmental dyslexia. A total of 79 students participated in the research, both genders, from 8 to 11 years old, from 3rd to 5th grades, and were divided into Group I: 19 students with developmental dyslexia and Group II: 60 students with good academic performance. All the students were assessed using “The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency” (second edition), to measure the motor skills and the pattern and differences between groups. The results of this study showed that the motor performance of Group II students was superior to the performance of students of Group I in almost all motor areas assessed but both groups performed less well than they should have for their chronological age. The results of this study indicate that occupational therapists, speech therapists and educators need to be aware of the presence of motor impairments and the need for early intervention in both the academic and clinical environments, in order to ensure that early identification and diagnosis of possible co-occurrences, such as DCD, and the impact on learning to guarantee more appropriate clinical and educational assistance for this population. This may also indicate that increased exposure to movement may be important to limit some of the secondary health consequences in children in Brazil.
