A variation on split-cast mounting for complete denture construction

dThis article describes a variation of the split-cast mounting technique wherein the border of the definitive cast is wrapped with masking tape to form a container for the dental plaster normally used to affix the cast to the articulator. The entire inferior surface of the cast is coated with a thin film of petroleum jelly, and the cast is mounted in the articulator. After the dental plaster has set, the cast is retained by means of the masking tape. The cast is separated from the dental plaster simply by removing the masking tape.

Changes in physiological and stroking parameters during interval swims at the slope of the d-t relationship

The slope of the distance-time relationship from maximal 200 and 400 in bouts (S(200-400)) has been increasingly employed for setting training intensities in swimming. However, physiological and mechanical responses at this speed are poorly understood. Thus, this study investigated blood lactate, heart rate (HR), stroke rate (SR), stroke length (SL) and RPE responses to an interval swimming set at S(200-400) in trained swimmers. In a 50-m pool, twelve athletes (16.5 +/- 1.2 yr, 176 +/- 7 cm, 68.4 +/- 5.4 kg, and 7.8 +/- 2.5% body fat) performed maximal 200 and 400 m crawl trials for S(200-400) determination (1.28 +/- 0.05 m/s). Thereafter, swimmers were instructed to perform 5 x 400 in at this speed with 1.5 min rest between repetitions. Three athletes Could not complete the set (exhaustion at 21.0 +/- 3.1 min). For the remaining swimmers (total set duration = 32.0 +/- 1.3 min) significant increases) (p < 0.05) in blood lactate (5.7 +/- 0.8-7.9 +/- 2.4 mmol/l), SR (29.6 +/- 3.2-32.1 +/- 4.1 cycles/min), HR (169 +/- 11-181 +/- 8 bpm) and RPE (13.3 +/- 1.6-16.3 +/- 2.6) were observed through the IS. Conversely, SL decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from the first to the fifth repetition (2.48 +/- 0.22-2.31 +/- 0.24 m/cycle). These results suggest that interval swimming at S(200-400) represents an intense physiological, mechanical and perceptual stimulus that can be sustained for a prolonged period by most athletes. Patients' expectations and satisfaction of complete denture therapy and correlation with locus of control

P>Considering the importance of patients' satisfaction with complete denture therapy and the influence of psychosocial aspects and expectations regarding satisfaction with their dentures, the present study aimed to test for a correlation between locus of control profiles and expectations before and satisfaction after complete denture therapy. Sixty-four patients rated their expectations for aesthetic and functional results of complete denture therapy on a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS), using scores from 0 (worst results) to 10 (best results). A similar questionnaire was used regarding satisfaction after final denture adjustments. Patients also answered a locus of control questionnaire in the initial interview. anova and a chi-squared test were used to test for correlations among ratings, patient gender and locus of control profiles. The significance level adopted was 0 center dot 05. The expectation ratings before treatment were significantly lower than the post-treatment completion ratings, both for aesthetics (P < 0 center dot 001) and function (P = 0 center dot 004). There was no correlation between locus of control profiles and patients' ratings or between gender and VAS scores. No correlation was found between locus of control profiles and scores for expectations before and satisfaction after complete dentures.

Single top quark at future hadron colliders: Complete signal and background study

We perform a detailed theoretical study including decays and jet fragmentation of all the important modes of single top quark production and all the basic background processes at the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC colliders. Special attention is paid to the complete tree level calculation of the QCD fake background which was not considered in previous studies. An analysis of the various kinematical distributions for the signal and backgrounds allow us to work out a set of cuts for an efficient background suppression and extraction of the signal. It is shown that the signal to background ratio after optimized cuts could reach about 0.4 at the Tevatron and 1 at the LHC. The remaining after cuts signal rate at the LHC for the lepton+jets signature is expected to be about 6.1 pb and will be enough to study single top quark physics even during LHC operation at a low luminosity. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Identification and complete sequencing of novel human transcripts through the use of mouse orthologs and testis cDNA sequences

The correct identification of all human genes, and their derived transcripts, has not yet been achieved, and it remains one of the major aims of the worldwide genomics community. Computational programs suggest the existence of 30,000 to 40,000 human genes. However, definitive gene identification can only be achieved by experimental approaches. We used two distinct methodologies, one based on the alignment of mouse orthologous sequences to the human genome, and another based on the construction of a high-quality human testis cDNA library, in an attempt to identify new human transcripts within the human genome sequence. We generated 47 complete human transcript sequences, comprising 27 unannotated and 20 annotated sequences. Eight of these transcripts are variants of previously known genes. These transcripts were characterized according to size, number of exons, and chromosomal localization, and a search for protein domains was undertaken based on their putative open reading frames. In silico expression analysis suggests that some of these transcripts are expressed at low levels and in a restricted set of tissues.
