The environmental diagnosis of any area affected for mining activities contributes in a positive form for the analysis of the characteristics of the environment, biological and social, thus being able to establish control parameters. The clay extration for red ceramics promotes the environment degradation as any another one cultivates of mineral goods, but in lesser scale, which had to the dimensions of potteries. Being thus, some decurrent environment characteristics of the clay extration had been inquired clearly used for potteries located in the city of Rio Claro, SP. For this, the followed method was the cadastre of these areas and potteries in created tables, searching, with this, the contribution for the involved people in the extract activity of related potteries and the facilitation in the visualization of the main problems, necessities and proposals for each one. It could be perceived that the environmental diagnosis of the areas had in common presented referring points to the places where if they find the activities. The same ones are located in the region the northwest of Rio Claro and well next one to the others. Moreover, they have in common, referring characteristics to the process of manufacture of bricks. In common, all the responsibility for the administration and course of the activities competes to the proper families, since the administrative part, even though to the process of manufacture of the bricks. Moreover, from the comment of the areas through field work, the prominent use of diverse areas in the region for the clay extration is noticed, making with that the region has great importance in the regional scene.

We review symplectic nontwist maps that we have introduced to describe Lagrangian transport properties in magnetically confined plasmas in tokamaks. These nontwist maps are suitable to describe the formation and destruction of transport barriers in the shearless region (i.e., near the curve where the twist condition does not hold). The maps can be used to investigate two kinds of problems in plasmas with non-monotonic field profiles: the first is the chaotic magnetic field line transport in plasmas with external resonant perturbations. The second problem is the chaotic particle drift motion caused by electrostatic drift waves. The presented analytical maps, derived from plasma models with equilibrium field profiles and control parameters that are commonly measured in plasma discharges, can be used to investigate long-term transport properties.

The quality of fish products is indispensably linked to the freshness of the raw material modulated by appropriate manipulation and storage conditions, specially the storage temperature after catch. The purpose of the research presented in this thesis, which was largely conducted in the context of a research project funded by Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF), concerned the evaluation of the freshness of farmed and wild fish species, in relation to different storage conditions, under ice (0°C) or at refrigeration temperature (4°C). Several specimens of different species, bogue (Boops boops), red mullet (Mullus barbatus), sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), during storage, under the different temperature conditions adopted, have been examined. The assessed control parameters were physical (texture, through the use of a dynamometer; visual quality using a computer vision system (CVS)), chemical (through footprint metabolomics 1H-NMR) and sensory (Quality Index Method (QIM). Microbiological determinations were also carried out on the species of hake (Merluccius merluccius). In general obtained results confirmed that the temperature of manipulation/conservation is a key factor in maintaining fish freshness. NMR spectroscopy showed to be able to quantify and evaluate the kinetics for unselected compounds during fish degradation, even a posteriori. This can be suitable for the development of new parameters related to quality and freshness. The development of physical methods, particularly the image analysis performed by computer vision system (CVS), for the evaluation of fish degradation, is very promising. Among CVS parameters, skin colour, presence and distribution of gill mucus, and eye shape modification evidenced a high sensibility for the estimation of fish quality loss, as a function of the adopted storage conditions. Particularly the eye concavity index detected on fish eye showed a high positive correlation with total QIM score.

The ability of block copolymers to spontaneously self-assemble into a variety of ordered nano-structures not only makes them a scientifically interesting system for the investigation of order-disorder phase transitions, but also offers a wide range of nano-technological applications. The architecture of a diblock is the most simple among the block copolymer systems, hence it is often used as a model system in both experiment and theory. We introduce a new soft-tetramer model for efficient computer simulations of diblock copolymer melts. The instantaneous non-spherical shape of polymer chains in molten state is incorporated by modeling each of the two blocks as two soft spheres. The interactions between the spheres are modeled in a way that the diblock melt tends to microphase separate with decreasing temperature. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the equilibrium structures at variable values of the two relevant control parameters, the diblock composition and the incompatibility of unlike components. The simplicity of the model allows us to scan the control parameter space in a completeness that has not been reached in previous molecular simulations. The resulting phase diagram shows clear similarities with the phase diagram found in experiments. Moreover, we show that structural details of block copolymer chains can be reproduced by our simple model. We develop a novel method for the identification of the observed diblock copolymer mesophases that formalizes the usual approach of direct visual observation, using the characteristic geometry of the structures. A cluster analysis algorithm is used to determine clusters of each component of the diblock, and the number and shape of the clusters can be used to determine the mesophase. We also employ methods from integral geometry for the identification of mesophases and compare their usefulness to the cluster analysis approach. To probe the properties of our model in confinement, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of atomistic polyethylene melts confined between graphite surfaces. The results from these simulations are used as an input for an iterative coarse-graining procedure that yields a surface interaction potential for the soft-tetramer model. Using the interaction potential derived in that way, we perform an initial study on the behavior of the soft-tetramer model in confinement. Comparing with experimental studies, we find that our model can reflect basic features of confined diblock copolymer melts.

This thesis aimed at addressing some of the issues that, at the state of the art, avoid the P300-based brain computer interface (BCI) systems to move from research laboratories to end users’ home. An innovative asynchronous classifier has been defined and validated. It relies on the introduction of a set of thresholds in the classifier, and such thresholds have been assessed considering the distributions of score values relating to target, non-target stimuli and epochs of voluntary no-control. With the asynchronous classifier, a P300-based BCI system can adapt its speed to the current state of the user and can automatically suspend the control when the user diverts his attention from the stimulation interface. Since EEG signals are non-stationary and show inherent variability, in order to make long-term use of BCI possible, it is important to track changes in ongoing EEG activity and to adapt BCI model parameters accordingly. To this aim, the asynchronous classifier has been subsequently improved by introducing a self-calibration algorithm for the continuous and unsupervised recalibration of the subjective control parameters. Finally an index for the online monitoring of the EEG quality has been defined and validated in order to detect potential problems and system failures. This thesis ends with the description of a translational work involving end users (people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-ALS). Focusing on the concepts of the user centered design approach, the phases relating to the design, the development and the validation of an innovative assistive device have been described. The proposed assistive technology (AT) has been specifically designed to meet the needs of people with ALS during the different phases of the disease (i.e. the degree of motor abilities impairment). Indeed, the AT can be accessed with several input devices either conventional (mouse, touchscreen) or alterative (switches, headtracker) up to a P300-based BCI.

Model based calibration has gained popularity in recent years as a method to optimize increasingly complex engine systems. However virtually all model based techniques are applied to steady state calibration. Transient calibration is by and large an emerging technology. An important piece of any transient calibration process is the ability to constrain the optimizer to treat the problem as a dynamic one and not as a quasi-static process. The optimized air-handling parameters corresponding to any instant of time must be achievable in a transient sense; this in turn depends on the trajectory of the same parameters over previous time instances. In this work dynamic constraint models have been proposed to translate commanded to actually achieved air-handling parameters. These models enable the optimization to be realistic in a transient sense. The air handling system has been treated as a linear second order system with PD control. Parameters for this second order system have been extracted from real transient data. The model has been shown to be the best choice relative to a list of appropriate candidates such as neural networks and first order models. The selected second order model was used in conjunction with transient emission models to predict emissions over the FTP cycle. It has been shown that emission predictions based on air-handing parameters predicted by the dynamic constraint model do not differ significantly from corresponding emissions based on measured air-handling parameters.

A Hall thruster, an E × B device used for in-space propulsion, utilizes an axial electric field to electrostatically accelerate plasma propellant from the spacecraft. The axial electric field is created by positively biasing the anode so that the positivelycharged ions may be accelerated (repelled) from the thruster, which produces thrust. However, plasma electrons are much smaller than ions and may be accelerated much more quickly toward the anode; if electrons were not impeded, a "short circuit" due to the electron flow would eliminate the thrust mechanism. Therefore, a magnetic field serves to "magnetize" plasma electrons internal to the thruster and confines them in gyro-orbits within the discharge channel. Without outside factors electrons would be confined indefinitely; however, electron-neutral collisions provide a mechanism to free electrons from their orbits allowing electrons to cross the magnetic field toward the anode, where this process is described by classical transport theory. To make matters worse, cross-field electron transport has been observed to be 100-1000 times that predicted by classical collisional theory, providing an efficiency loss mechanism and an obstacle for modeling and simulations in Hall thrusters. The main difficulty in studying electron transport in Hall thrusters is the coupling that exists between the plasma and the fields, where the plasma creates and yet is influenced by the electric field. A device has been constructed at MTU’s Isp Lab, the Hall Electron Mobility Gage, which was designed specifically to study electron transport in E × B devices, where the coupling between the plasma and electric field was virtually eliminated. In this device the two most cited contributors to electron transport in Hall thrusters, fluctuation-induced transport, and wall effects, were absent. Removing the dielectric walls and plasma fluctuations, while maintaining the field environment in vacuum, has allowed the study of electron dynamics in Hall thruster fields where the electrons behave as test particles in prescribed fields, greatly simplifying the environment. Therefore, it was possible to observe any effects on transport not linked to the cited mechanisms, and it was possible to observe trends of the enhanced mobility with control parameters of electric and magnetic fields and neutral density– parameters that are not independently variable in a Hall thruster. The result of the investigation was the observation of electron transport that was ~ 20-100 times the classical prediction. The cross-field electron transport in the Mobility Gage was generally lower than that found in a Hall thruster so these findings do not negate the possibility of fluctuations and/or wall collisions contributing to transport in a Hall thruster. However, this research led to the observation of enhanced cross-field transport that had not been previously isolated in Hall thruster fields, which is not reliant on momentum-transfer collisions, wall collisions or fluctuations.

OBJECTIVES: Magnesium aspartate hydrochloride (Magnesiocard, Mg-Asp-HCl) is proposed as a substitute of magnesium sulfate for the treatment of preeclampsia and premature labor. After an i.v. administration of a dose equivalent to that used in the treatment of preeclampsia to nonpregnant volunteers, a 10-fold increase of aspartic acid (Asp) over the physiological level was observed. Animal experiments have demonstrated that highly increased fetal levels of acidic amino acids such as Asp could be associated with neurotoxic damage in the fetal brain. The influence of such an elevation of Asp concentration in the maternal circuit on the fetal level, using the in vitro perfusion model of human placenta, was investigated. STUDY DESIGN: After a control phase (2h), a therapeutic dose of Mg combined with Asp (Magnesiocard, Mg-Asp-HCl) was applied to the maternal circuit approaching 10 times the physiological level of Asp. The administration was performed in two different phases simulating either a peak of maximum concentration (bolus application, 2h) or a steady state level (initially added, 4h). RESULTS: In four experiments, during experimental phases (6h) a slow increase in concentration in the fetal circuit was seen for Mg, AIB (alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, artificial amino acid) and creatinine confirming previous observations. In contrast, no net transfer of Asp across the placenta was seen. A continuous decrease in the concentration of Asp on both maternal and fetal side suggests active uptake and metabolization by the placenta. Viability control parameters remained stable indicating the absence of an effect on placental metabolism, permeability and morphology. CONCLUSION: Elevation of Asp concentration up to 10 times the physiological level by the administration of Mg-Asp-HCl to the maternal circuit under in vitro perfusion conditions of human placenta has no influence on the fetal level of Asp suggesting no transfer of Asp from the maternal to fetal compartment. Therefore, the administration of Mg-Asp-HCl to preeclamptic patients would be beneficial for the patients without any impact on placental or fetal physiology.
