O artigo, produzido no âmbito das comemorações dos 80 anos de publicação do Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova, interroga-se sobre a atualidade dessa carta. Para tanto, explora as condições históricas de emergência do documento, os significados atribuídos à Escola Nova no Brasil na década de 1930 e as contendas ocorridas na arena educacional no período. Além disso, discorre sobre as especificidades do movimento escolanovista brasileiro, procurando demonstrar que a Escola Nova constituiu-se no país como uma fórmula, com significados múltiplos e distintas apropriações produzidas no entrelaçamento de três vertentes: a pedagógica, a ideológica e a política. No que tange ao primeiro aspecto, a indefinição das fronteiras conceituais permitiu que a expressão Escola Nova aglutinasse diferentes educadores, católicos e liberais, em torno de princípios pedagógicos do ensino ativo. No segundo caso, a fórmula ofereceu-se como meio para a transformação da sociedade, servindo às finalidades divergentes dos grupos em litígio. Já na terceira acepção, tornou-se bandeira política, sendo capturada como signo de renovação do sistema educacional pelo Manifesto e por seus signatários. Assim, o documento emergiu como parte do jogo político pela disputa do controle do Estado e de suas dinâmicas, e, portanto, como elemento de coesão de uma frente de educadores que, a despeito de suas diferenças, articulava-se em torno de alguns objetivos comuns, como laicidade, gratuidade e obrigatoriedade da educação. Ademais, ele também foi representante de um grupo de intelectuais que abraçava um mesmo projeto de nação, ainda que com divergências internas.

Der Begriff "Bannerwolke" bezeichnet ein eindrucksvolles Phänomen aus dem Bereich der Gebirgsmeteorologie. Bannerwolken können gelegentlich im Hochgebirge im Bereich steiler Bergspitzen oder langgezogener Bergrücken, wie z.B. dem Matterhorn in den Schweizer Alpen oder dem Zugspitzgrat in den Bayrischen Alpen beobachtet werden. Der Begriff bezeichnet eine Banner- oder Fahnen-ähnliche Wolkenstruktur, welche an der windabgewandten Seite des Berges befestigt zu sein scheint, während die windzugewandte Seite vollkommen wolkenfrei ist. Bannerwolken fanden bislang, trotz ihres relativ häufigen Auftretens in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur kaum Beachtung. Entsprechend wenig ist über ihren Entstehungsmechanismus und insbesondere die relative Bedeutung dynamischer gegenüber thermodynamischer Prozesse bekannt. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur wurden bislang 3 unterschiedliche Mechanismen postuliert, um die Entstehung von Bannerwolken zu erklären. Demnach entstehen Bannerwolken durch (a) den Bernoulli-Effekt, insbesondere durch die lokale adiabatische Kühlung hervorgerufen durch eine Druckabnahme entlang quasi-horizontal verlaufender, auf der windzugewandten Seite startender Trajektorien, (b) durch isobare Mischung bodennaher kälterer Luft mit wärmerer Luft aus höheren Schichten, oder (c) durch erzwungene Hebung im aufsteigenden Ast eines Leerotors. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, ein besseres physikalisches Verständnis für das Phänomen der Bannerwolke zu entwickeln. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf dem dominierenden Entstehungsmechanismus, der relativen Bedeutung dynamischer und thermodynamischer Prozesse, sowie der Frage nach geeigneten meteorologischen Bedingungen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein neues Grobstruktursimulations (LES)-Modell entwickelt, welches geeignet ist turbulente, feuchte Strömungen in komplexem Terrain zu untersuchen. Das Modell baut auf einem bereits existierenden mesoskaligen (RANS) Modell auf. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde das neue Modell ausführlich gegen numerische Referenzlösungen und Windkanal-Daten verglichen. Die wesentlichen Ergebnisse werden diskutiert, um die Anwendbarkeit des Modells auf die vorliegende wissenschaftliche Fragestellung zu überprüfen und zu verdeutlichen. Die Strömung über eine idealisierte pyramidenförmige Bergspitze wurde für Froude-Zahlen Fr >> 1 sowohl auf Labor- als auch atmosphärischer Skala mit und ohne Berücksichtigung der Feuchtephysik untersucht. Die Simulationen zeigen, dass Bannerwolken ein primär dynamisches Phänomen darstellen. Sie entstehen im Lee steiler Bergspitzen durch dynamisch erzwungene Hebung. Die Simulationen bestätigen somit die Leerotor-Theorie. Aufgrund des stark asymmetrischen, Hindernis-induzierten Strömungsfeldes können Bannerwolken sogar im Falle horizontal homogener Anfangsbedingungen hinsichtlich Feuchte und Temperatur entstehen. Dies führte zu der neuen Erkenntnis, dass zusätzliche leeseitige Feuchtequellen, unterschiedliche Luftmassen in Luv und Lee, oder Strahlungseffekte keine notwendige Voraussetzung für die Entstehung einer Bannerwolke darstellen. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Bannerwolkenbildung steigt mit zunehmender Höhe und Steilheit des pyramidenförmigen Hindernisses und ist in erster Näherung unabhängig von dessen Orientierung zur Anströmung. Simulationen mit und ohne Berücksichtigung der Feuchtephysik machen deutlich, dass thermodynamische Prozesse (insbes. die Umsetzung latenter Wärme) für die Dynamik prototypischer (nicht-konvektiver) Bannerwolken zweitrangig ist. Die Verstärkung des aufsteigenden Astes im Lee und die resultierende Wolkenbildung, hervorgerufen durch die Freisetzung latenter Wärme, sind nahezu vernachlässigbar. Die Feuchtephysik induziert jedoch eine Dipol-ähnliche Struktur im Vertikalprofil der Brunt-Väisälä Frequenz, was zu einem moderaten Anstieg der leeseitigen Turbulenz führt. Es wird gezeigt, dass Gebirgswellen kein entscheidendes Ingredienz darstellen, um die Dynamik von Bannerwolken zu verstehen. Durch eine Verstärkung der Absinkbewegung im Lee, haben Gebirgswellen lediglich die Tendenz die horizontale Ausdehnung von Bannerwolken zu reduzieren. Bezüglich geeigneter meteorologischer Bedingungen zeigen die Simulationen, dass unter horizontal homogenen Anfangsbedingungen die äquivalentpotentielle Temperatur in der Anströmung mit der Höhe abnehmen muss. Es werden 3 notwendige und hinreichende Kriterien, basierend auf dynamischen und thermodynamischen Variablen vorgestellt, welche einen weiteren Einblick in geeignete meteorologische Bedingungen geben.

La realtà virtuale è un campo in continua crescita e in costante studio, in particolare nell'applicazione nel campo del gaming e nella formazione. In questa tesi sono stati confrontati e testati due visori per la realtà virtuale di tipo immersivo: OSVR e Oculus Rift DK2. Per il confronto dei due dispositivi sono stati creati su Blender due modelli: una rappresentazione tridimensionale di Times Square molto realistica (sfruttando Google Street View per la visualizzazione degli edifici e dei banner pubblicitari) e un circuito di Go Kart stile cartoon. Successivamente alla creazione di questi, è stato utilizzato il motore grafico Unity per l'aggiunta della dinamica dei componenti dei visori e il completamento dei due progetti, per esempio l'utilizzo degli script per il movimento del go kart. Tramite lo strumento Profiler e il Frame Debugger di Unity sono stati eseguiti i test sulle performance e sono state svolte le considerazioni finali sui visori. I risultati ottenuti possono essere d'aiuto per uno studio successivo sulla realtà virtuale immersiva ed essere una base di partenza per le migliorie da adottare con lo scopo di ottenere migliori prestazioni ed una maggiore interattività con l'utente.

Reform is a word that, one might easily say, characterizes more than any other the history and development of Buddhism. Yet, it must also be said that reform movements in East Asian Buddhism have often taken on another goal—harmony or unification; that is, a desire not only to reconstruct a more worthy form of Buddhism, but to simultaneously bring together all existing forms under a single banner, in theory if not in practice. This paper explores some of the tensions between the desire for reform and the quest for harmony in modern Japanese Buddhism thought, by comparing two developments: the late 19th century movement towards ‘New Buddhism’ (shin Bukkyō) as exemplified by Murakami Senshō 村上専精 (1851–1929), and the late 20th century movement known as ‘Critical Buddhism’ (hihan Bukkyō), as found in the works of Matsumoto Shirō 松本史朗 and Hakamaya Noriaki 袴谷憲昭. In all that has been written about Critical Buddhism, in both Japanese and English, very little attention has been paid to the place of the movement within the larger traditions of Japanese Buddhist reform. Here I reconsider Critical Buddhism in relation to the concerns of the previous, much larger trends towards Buddhist reform that emerged almost exactly 100 years previous—the so-called shin Bukkyō or New Buddhism of the late-Meiji era. Shin Bukkyō is a catch-all term that includes the various writings and activities of Inoue Enryō, Shaku Sōen, and Kiyozawa Manshi, as well as the so-called Daijō-hibussetsuron, a broad term used (often critically) to describe Buddhist writers who suggested that Mahāyāna Buddhism is not, in fact, the Buddhism taught by the ‘historical’ Buddha Śākyamuni. Of these, I will make a few general remarks about Daijō-hibusseturon, before turning attention more specifically to the work of Murakami Senshō, in order to flesh out some of the similarities and differences between his attempt to construct a ‘unified Buddhism’ and the work of his late-20th century avatars, the Critical Buddhists. Though a number of their aims and ideas overlap, I argue that there remain fundamental differences with respect to the ultimate purposes of Buddhist reform. This issue hinges on the implications of key terms such as ‘unity’ and ‘harmony’ as well as the way doctrinal history is categorized and understood, but it also relates to issues of ideology and the use and abuse of Buddhist doctrines in 20th-century politics.

Contrasting strands of explanation of the motives underlying collective action, as either culturally determined, as an attempt at compensation, point towards an understanding of identity politics as a reaction to given conditions. They pay little attention to the social dynamics that evolve in relation to the conflict within a group, and the possible motivation that can ensue from these. This article analyses the mobilisation among Hindu-nationalist organisations. Rather than seeking their attraction in their discursive outputs and the possible answers they might give in times of change, the contention is that they are to be sought in the specific internal dynamics and the possibilities they create within their historical context. These specific opportunities for action are inherent firstly in the mode of operation relying on participation and involvement, on their direct intervention, their localness and accessibility. Moreover, the dichotomisation inherent in violence makes possible the integration of different interests and different discontents under one banner and therefore contributes to the project of unification undertaken by Hindu-nationalism.

Despite major improvements in diagnostics and interventional therapies, cardiovascular diseases remain a major health care and socio-economic burden both in western and developing countries, in which this burden is increasing in close correlation to economic growth. Health authorities and the general population have started to recognize that the fight against these diseases can only be won if their burden is faced by increasing our investment on interventions in lifestyle changes and prevention. There is an overwhelming evidence of the efficacy of secondary prevention initiatives including cardiac rehabilitation in terms of reduction in morbidity and mortality. However, secondary prevention is still too poorly implemented in clinical practice, often only on selected populations and over a limited period of time. The development of systematic and full comprehensive preventive programmes is warranted, integrated in the organization of national health systems. Furthermore, systematic monitoring of the process of delivery and outcomes is a necessity. Cardiology and secondary prevention, including cardiac rehabilitation, have evolved almost independently of each other and although each makes a unique contribution it is now time to join forces under the banner of preventive cardiology and create a comprehensive model that optimizes long term outcomes for patients and reduces the future burden on health care services. These are the aims that the Cardiac Rehabilitation Section of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation has foreseen to promote secondary preventive cardiology in clinical practice.

In the profoundly changing and dynamic world of contemporary audiovisual media, what has remained surprisingly unaffected is regulation. In the European Union, the new Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMS), proposed by the European Commission on December 13, 2005, should allegedly rectify this situation. Amending the existing Television without Frontiers Directive, it should offer a fresh approach and meet the challenge of appropriately regulating media in a complex environment. It is meant to achieve a balance between the free circulation of TV broadcast and new audiovisual media and the preservation of values of cultural identity and diversity, while respecting the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality inherent to the Community. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether and how the changes envisaged to the EC audiovisual media regime might influence cultural diversity in Europe. It addresses subsequently the question of whether the new AVMS properly safeguards the balance between competition and the public interest in this regard, or whether cultural diversity remains a mere political banner.

Late Eocene to Pleistocene planktonic foraminifers from Leg 120 Holes 747A and 749B on the Kerguelen Plateau were quantitatively analyzed. Microperforate tenuitellid forms dominate the Oligocene to middle Miocene, and 17 species (including the new species Tenuitella jamesi and Tenuitellinata selleyi) are recorded. A lineage zonation of tenuitellid foraminifers is proposed as an alternative scheme for refinement of the Oligocene-Miocene biostratigraphy in high latitudes. Progressive or abrupt alterations in morphological characters within this lineage, producing different morphotypes or species, coincided with prolonged or sudden changes in paleoclimate. These microperforate planktonic foraminifers thus appear to have potential as indicators of cold-water masses and temperature fluctuations in post-Eocene oceans.

One hundred and sixty core samples were analyzed from Hole 832B to evaluate planktonic foraminiferal datum levels, and to zone and correlate the borehole succession. A total of 32 biostratigraphic events were recognized in the interval from Core 134-832B-59R through 134-832B-73R (702.49 through 846.4 meters below seafloor [mbsf]). These include 17 first appearance datum levels (FAD), 10 last appearance datum levels (LAD), and 5 coiling-change events in trochospiral species. The studied succession has been subdivided into nine planktonic foraminiferal zones (viz. downsequence N.22, N.21, N.20, N.19, N.18, N.17B, N.17A-N.16, N.15, N.8). The zonal index species occur in the expected stratigraphic order for zonal correlation, but some of the zonal boundaries may be diachronous compared to other localities in the western Pacific region. The FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) truncatulinoides (d' Orbigny) at 714.10 mbsf defines the boundary between the Zone N.22 and N.21; the boundary between Zones N.21 and N.20 at 741.73 mbsf is marked by the FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) tosaensis Takayanagi and Saito. The lower boundary of Zone N.20 is placed at 747.65 mbsf, based on the FAD of Globorotalia (Truncorotalia) crassaformis s.s. (Galloway and Wissler); the FAD of Sphaeroidinella dehiscens (Parker and Jones) at 756.61 mbsf defines the boundary between Zones N.18 and N.19. The FAD of Globorotalia (Globorotalia) tumida tumida (Brady) at 811.15 mbsf marks the boundary between Zones N.18 and N.17B. The boundary between Zones N.17B and N.17Ais placed at 843.52 mbsf, based on the FAD of Pulleniatina primalis Banner and Blow. A change in depositional conditions occurs at 846.4 mbsf just below the Zone N.17B lower boundary and is marked by the first appearance of abundant planktonic foraminifers in the region. The interval between 849.13 and 856.1 mbsf is placed in undifferentiated Zones N.17A and N.16, based on the rare occurrence of Neogloboquadrina acostaensis (Blow). The sparsely fossiliferous volcanic sandstone unit between 934.19 and 955.67 mbsf is positioned within Zone N.15 based on the presence of Globigerina (Zeaglobigerina) nepenthes Todd and Globigerinoides (Zeaglobigerina) druryi Arkers, and absence of N. acostaensis and Globorotalia (Jenkinsella) siakensis LeRoy. An unconformity between 955.67 and 971.80 mbsf may explain the absence of Zones N.14 through N.9. Basal Zone N.8 is recognized at 971.80 to 1008.60 mbsf by the presence of Globigerinoides sicanus De Stefani and the absence of Praeorbulina and Orbulina spp. The age of the succession between 702.49 and 1008.6 mbsf extends from the latest Pliocene or earliest Pleistocene (Zone N.22) to the earliest middle Miocene (Zone N.8). Among the datum levels evaluated here, the following events are considered to be the most reliable for time correlation in the studied region: the FADs of G. (T.) truncatulinoides, G. (T.) tosaensis, G. (T.) crassaformis, S. dehiscens, G. conglobatus (Brady), G. (G.) tumida tumida, and P. primalis; and the LADs of Globorotalia (Menardella) multicamerata Cushman and Jarvis, and Dentoglobigerina altispira altispira (Cushman and Jarvis). Application of a chronometric scale to part of the succession, suggests that the interval of calcareous sediment between 702.49 and 846.4 mbsf accumulated at about 30 m/m.y.

Introduction : Triggered by the Asian currency crisis, Indonesia plunged into the times of violent change. With the downfall of the long-standing Soeharto rule in May 1998, changes of the state order started with great magnitude and rapidity under a new banner of “reformasi” (reform). What changes have occurred in this reformasi period? What do these changes signify? To answer these questions, it would be better to have a certain yardstick to allow us comparison. One possibility is to use a yardstick of history. What picture will emerge if we see the current array of changes in long-term historical perspectives is a main question of this paper. This paper intends to provide a bird’s-eye picture illustrating where in the Indonesian history the current restructuring of the state order is located. Rather than focusing on a specific area, I here attempt to broaden our outlook on Indonesia’s political, economic and social arenas in order to identify what are happening in these arenas, how they are mutually related, and what those events signify in the Indonesia’s historical context.
