Benzene-1,2-dioxyacetic acid (bdoaH2) reacts with Mn(CH3CO2)2·4H2O in an ethanol-water mixture to give the manganese(II) complex [Mn(bdoa)(H2O)3]. The X-ray crystal structure of the complex shows the metal to be pseudo seven-coordinate. The quadridentate bdoa2− dicar☐ylate ligand forms an essentially planar girdle around the metal, being strongly bondedtransoid by a car☐ylate oxygen atom from each of the two car☐ylate moieties (mean MnO 2.199A˚) and also weakly chelated by the two internal ether oxygen atoms (mean MnO 2.413A˚). The coordination sphere about the manganese is completed by three water molecules (mean MnO 2.146A˚) lying in a meridional plane orthogonal to that of the bdoa2− ligand. Magnetic, conductivity and voltammetry data for the complex are given, and its use as a catalyst for the disproportionisation of H2O2 is described.

The copper(II) complex [Cu(bdoa)(H2O)2] (bdoaH2 = benzene-1,2-dioxyacetic acid) reacts with triphenylphosphine (1:4 mol ratio) to give the colourless copper(I) complex [Cu(η1-bdoaH)(PPh3)3] (1) in good yield. The X-ray crystal structure of the complex shows the copper atom at the centre of a distorted tetrahedron, and is ligated by the phosphorus atoms of the three triphenylphosphines and one carboxylate oxygen atom of the bdoaH− ligand. Significant intermolecular hydrogen-bonding exists between the pendant carboxylate OH function of one molecule and the uncoordinated “ketonic” oxygen of a neighbouring molecule. Complex 1 is non-conducting in chloroform but ionizes readily in acetonitrile. The cyclic voltammogram of an acetonitrile solution of 1 shows a single irreversible anodic peak for the oxidation of the PPh3 ligands and the copper(I) centre, and a single irreversible cathodic peak for the reduction of the bdoaH− ion. IR and mass spectral data for 1 are given.

Copper(II) acetate reacts with benzene-1,2-dioxyacetic acid (bdoaH2) in aqueous media to give [Cu(bdoa)(H2O)2] (1). Complex 1 reacts with the N-donor ligands pyridine (py), ammonia and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) to give [Cu(bdoa)(NH3)2]·H2O (2), [Cu(bdoa)(py)2]·H2O (3) and [Cu2(bdoa)(phen)4]bdoa·13H2O (4), respectively. The X-ray crystal structure of the dicopper(II,II) complex 4 shows each copper atom at the centre of a distorted trigonal bipyramid comprising four nitrogen atoms from two chelating phen ligands and a single oxygen atom from one of the carboxylate moieties of the bridging bdoa2− ligand. The cyclic voltammogram of 4 shows a single reversible wave for the Cu2+/Cu+ couple at E = + 115 mV (vs Ag/AgCl). Spectroscopic and magnetic data for the complexes are given.

By performing at) initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electronic transport simulations based on the OFT nonequilibrium Green`s functions method we investigate how the conformational changes of a benzene-1,4-dithiol molecule bonded to gold affect the molecular transport as the electrodes are separated from each other. In particular we consider the full evolution of the stretching process until the Junction breaking point and compare results obtained with a standard semilocal exchange and correlation functional to those computed with a self-interaction corrected method. We conclude that the inclusion of self-interaction corrections is fundamental for describing both the molecule conductance and its stability against conformational fluctuations.

Benzene adsorbed on highly acidic sulfated TiO2 (S-TiO2) shows an intriguing resonance Raman (RR) effect, with excitation in the blue-violet region. There are very interesting spectral features: the preferential enhancement of the e(2g) mode (1595 cm(-1)) in relation to the a(1g) mode (ring-breathing mode at 995 cm(-1)) and the appearance of bands at 1565 and 1514 cm(-1). The band at 1565 cm(-1) is probably one of the components of the e(2g) split band, originally a doubly degenerate mode (8a, 8b) in neat benzene, and the band at 1514 cm(-1) is assigned to the 19a mode, an inactive mode in neat benzene. These facts indicate a lowering of symmetry in adsorbed benzene, which may be caused by a strong interaction between S-TiO2 and the benzene molecule with formation of a benzene to Ti (IV) charge transfer (CT) complex or by the formation of a benzene radical cation species. However, the RR spectra of the adsorbed benzene cannot be assigned to the benzene radical cation because the observed wavenumber of the ring-breathing mode does not have the value expected for this species. Moreover, it was found by ESR measurements that the amount of radicals was very low, and so it was concluded that a CT complex is the species that originates the RR spectra. The most favorable intensification of the band at 1595 cm(-1) in the RR spectra of benzene/S-TiO2 at higher excitation energy corroborates this hypothesis, as an absorption band in this energy range, assigned to a CT transition, is observed. Assessing CYP2E1 phenotype in vivo may be important to predict individual susceptibility to those chemicals, including benzene, which are metabolically activated by this isoenzyme. Chlorzoxazone (CHZ), a specific CYP2E1 substrate, is readily hydroxylated to 6-OH-chlorzoxazone (6-OH-CHZ) by liver CYP2E1 and the metabolic ratio 6-OH-CHZ/CHZ in serum (MR) is a specific and sensitive biomarker of CYP2E1 activity in vivo in humans. We used this MR as a potential biomarker of effect in benzene-treated rats and, also, in humans occupationally exposed to low levels of benzene. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (375-400 g b.w.) were treated i.p. for 3 days with either a 0.5 ml solution of benzene (5 mmol/kg b.w.) in corn oil, or 0.5 ml corn oil alone. Twenty-four hours after the last injection, a polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution of CHZ (20 mg/kg b.w.) was injected i.p. in both treated and control animals. After 2, 5.10,15, 20,30,45, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 240 min from injection, 0.2 ml blood was taken from the tip tail and stored at -20 degrees C until analysis. A modified reverse phase HPLC method using a 5 mu m Ultrasphere C18 column equipped with a direct-connection ODS guard column, was used to measure CHZ and its metabolite 6-OH-CHZ in serum. No statistically significant difference in the MR was observed, at any sampling time, between benzene-treated and control rats. The concentration-versus-time area under the curve (AUC), however, was lower (p < 0.05, Mann-Whitney test), whereas the systemic clearance was higher (p < 0.05) in treated than in control rats. Eleven petrochemical workers occupationally exposed to low levels of airborne benzene (mean +/- SD, 25.0 +/- 24.4 mu g/m(3)) and 13 non-exposed controls from the same factory (mean +/- SD, 6.7 +/- 4.0 mu g/m(3)) signed an informed consent form and were administered 500 mg CHZ p.o. Two hours later a venous blood sample was taken for CHZ and 6-OH-CHZ measurements. Despite exposed subjects showed significantly higher levels of t,t-MA and S-PMA, two biomarkers of exposure to benzene, than non-exposed workers, no difference in the MR mean values +/- SD was found between exposed (0.59 +/- 0.29) and non-exposed (0.57 +/- 0.23) subjects. So, benzene was found to modify CHZ disposition, but not CYP2E1 phenotype in benzene-treated rats, nor in workers exposed to benzene, probably due to the levels of exposure being too low. Solid-state compounds of general formula Ln(2)L(3)center dot nH(2)O, where L represents 1,4-bis(3-carboxy-3-oxo-prop-1-enyl)benzene and Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, were synthesized. Complexometric titrations with EDTA, thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy have been employed to characterize and to study the thermal behavior of these compounds in dynamic air atmosphere. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, crystallinity, and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.

Benzene plasma polymer films were bombarded with Ar ions by plasma immersion ion implantation. The treatments were performed using argon pressure of 3 Pa and 70 W of applied power. The substrate holder was polarized with high voltage negative pulses (25 kV, 3 Hz). Exposure time to the immersion plasma, t, was varied from 0 to 9000 s. Optical gap and chemical composition of the samples were determined by ultraviolet-visible and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopies, respectively. Film wettability was investigated by the contact angle between a water drop and the film surface. Nanoindentation technique was employed in the hardness measurements. It was observed growth in carbon and oxygen concentrations while there was decrease in the concentration of H atoms with increasing t. Furthermore, film hardness and wettability increased and the optical gap decreased with t. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of the chain crosslinking and unsaturation.

Electrostatic interactions govern most properties of polyelectrolyte films, as in the photoinduced bire-fringence of azo-containing polymers. In this paper we report a systematic investigation of optical storage characteristics of cast and layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly[1 -[4-(3-carboxy-4 hydroxypheny-lazo) benzene sulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt] (PAZO). Birefringence was photoinduced faster in PAZO cast films prepared at high pHs, with the characteristic writing times decreasing almost linearly with the pH in the range between 4 and 9. This was attributed to an increased free volume for the azochromophores with the enhanced electrostatic repulsion in PAZO charged to a greater extent. In contrast, in LbL films of PAZO alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), the electrostatic interactions between the oppositely charged polymers hampered photoisomerization and molecular rearrangement, thus leading to a slower writing kinetics for highly charged PAH or PAZO.

Mixtures of C6H6 and SF6 were polymerized in an r.f. discharge. Actinometry (quantitative optical emission spectroscopy) was used to determine trends in the plasma concentrations of the species F, H and CH as a function of the proportion of SF6 in the feed. Infrared spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis were employed to characterize the deposited material. Increasing proportions of SF, in the feed produced increased fragmentation of the benzene molecules and greater fluorination of the deposited material. The deposition rate, as determined by optical interferometry, was found to be enhanced about 4 times by the presence of 10-20% SF6 in the feed. At 50% SF6 in the feed, deposition rates were greater than in pure C6H6 plasmas despite the (probably large) etching effect of atomic fluorine from the discharge. Relationships between the plasma composition, electron density and temperature, film composition and growth rate are discussed.
