Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) maybe be considered to share some of the same inherent trade-offs as engineering ceramics. While BMGs typically exhibit high yield strengths, and while some have surprising fracture toughness, they exhibiting little to no tensile ductility, and fail in a brittle manner under uniaxial loading. Speaking broadly, there are two complimentary approaches to improving on these shortcomings: 1) create bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMCs) and 2) improve the properties of a monolithic BMG. The structure of this thesis mirrors this division, with chapters 2-7 focusing on creating and processing amorphous metal matrix composites, and chapter 8 focusing on modifying the properties of a monolithic BGM by altering its configurational state through irradiation.

Aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composites are envisioned as the next-generation composite materials for a wide range of applications. In this work, we investigate the erosive wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with both randomly dispersed and aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. The aligned CNT composites are prepared in two different configurations, where the sidewalls and ends of nanotubes are exposed to the composite surface. Results have shown that the composite with vertically aligned CNT-arrays exhibits superior erosive wear resistance compared to any of the other types of composites, and the erosion rate reaches a similar performance level to that of carbon steel at 20° impingement angle. The erosive wear mechanism of this type of composite, at various impingement angles, is studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We report that the erosive wear performance shows strong dependence on the alignment geometries of CNTs within the epoxy matrix under identical nanotube loading fractions. Correlations between the eroded surface roughness and the erosion rates of the CNT composites are studied by surface profilometry. This work demonstrates methods to fabricate CNT based polymer composites with high loading fractions of the filler, alignment control of nanotubes and optimized erosive wear properties. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Experimental observations on micromorphologies around broken fibers in glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites reveal different kinds of highly oriented patches at the circumambience of broken fibers, whereas the bulk of the matrix has been observed to be largely isotropic. These patches are interpreted to correlated areas where the stress gradients of the matrix are formed after fiber breaking, but the underlying cause for the orientation is still unknown. The authors have modified an embedded cell model to explain the experimental phenomena. The finite element simulation indicates that the surfaces around broken fibers display a change from an extension micromorphology to a mixed tension and shear micromorphology with the increase of applied strain.

Ultrasonic welding process can be used for bonding metal foils which is the fundament of ultrasonic consolidation (UC). UC process can be used to embed reinforcement fibres such as SiC fibres within an aluminum matrix materials. In this research we are investigating the phenomena occurring in the microstructure of the parts during ultrasonic welding process to obtain better understanding about how and why the process works. High-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is used to study the effects of the vibration on the evolution of microstructure in AA3003. The inverse pole figures (IPF) and the correlated misorientation angle distribution of the mentioned samples are obtained. The characteristics of the crystallographic orientation, the grain structure and the grain boundary are analyzed to find the effect of ultrasonic vibration on the microstructure and microtexture of the bond. The ultrasonic vibration will lead to exceptional refinement of grains to a micron level along the bond area and affect the crystallographic orientation. Ultrasonic vibration results in a very weak texture. Plastic flow occurs in the grain after welding process and there is additional plastic flow around the fibre which leads to the fibre embedding. © 2009 Editorial Board of CHINA WELDING.
Microstructure, properties and application of YAl2 intermetallic compound as particle reinforcements

An yttrium aluminum (YAl2) intermetallic compound ingot was prepared in an induction furnace under vacuum. The microstructure of YAl2 ingot was characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The load bearing response of YAl2 intermetallic was investigated and compared with SiC ceramic by indentation combined with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the tensile properties of the Mg–Li matrix composites reinforced with ultrafine YAl2 particles fabricated by planet ball milling were tested. The results show that the intermetallic compound ingot in this experiment is composed of a main face-centered-cubic structure YAl2 phase, a small amount of YAl phase, and minor Y and Al-rich phases. YAl2 intermetallic compound has excellent stability and shows better capability in crack resistance than SiC ceramic. The YAl2 intermetallic compound has better deformation compatibility with the Mg–14Li–3Al matrix than SiC reinforcement with the matrix, which leads to the superior resistance to crack for YAl2p/Mg–14Li–3Al composite compared to SiCp/Mg–14Li–3Al composite.

The thesis entitled "Sol-Gel Alumina Nano Composites for Functional Applications" investigate sol-gel methods of synthesis of alumina nanocomposites special reference to alumina-aluminium titanate and alumina-lanthanum phosphate composites. The functional properties such as thermal expansion coefficient and thermal shock resistance, machinability of composites as well as thermal protection are highlighted in addition to novel approach in synthesis of composites.A general introduction of alumina matrix composites materials, followed by brief coverage of alumina-aluminium titanate and alumina-lanthanum phosphate composites is highlight of the first chapter. The second chapter deals with the sol-gel synthesis of aluminium titanate and alumina-aluminium titanate composite. The synthesis of machinable substrate, based on alumina and lanthanum phosphate forms the basis of the third chapter. The fourth chapter describes the sol-gel coating of mullite on SiC substrate for the possible gas filtration application.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to prepare composites by incorporating expanded graphite fillers in insulating elastomer matrices and to study its DC electrical conductivity, dielectric properties and electromagnetic shielding characteristics, in addition to evaluating the mechanical properties. Recently, electronic devices and components have been rapidly developing and advancing. Thus, with increased usage of electronic devices, electromagnetic waves generated by electronic systems can potentially create serious problems such as malfunctions of medical apparatus and industry robots and can even cause harm to the human body. Therefore, in this work the applicable utility of the prepared composites as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material are also investigated. The dissertation includes nine chapters

Sisal fibers have been chemically modified by reaction with lignins, extracted from sugarcane bagasse and Pinus-type wood and then hydroxymethylated, to increase adhesion in resol-type phenolic thermoset matrices. Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) results showed that acidic sites predominate for unmodified/modified sisal fibers and for phenolic thermoset, indicating that the phenolic matrix has properties that favor the interaction with sisal fibers. The IGC results also showed that the phenolic thermoset has a dispersive component closer to those of the modified fibers suggesting that thermoset interactions with the less polar modified fibers are favored. Surface SEM images of the modified fibers showed that the fiber bundle deaggregation increased after the treatment, making the interfibrillar structure less dense in comparison with that of unmodified fibers, which increased the contact area and encouraged microbial biodegradation in simulated soil. Water diffusion was observed to be faster for composites reinforced with modified fibers, since the phenolic resin penetrated better into modified fibers, thereby blocking water passage through their channels. Overall, composites` properties showed that modified fibers promote a significant reduction in the hydrophilic character, and consequently of the reinforced composite without a major effect on impact strength and with increased storage modulus.
