We report a new protocol for the synthesis of M@rGO (M = Au, Pt, Pd, Ag and rGO = reduced graphene oxide) hybrid nanostructures at room temperature in Zn-acid medium. The roles of Zn-acid are to reduce the GO by generated hydrogen and the deposition of metal nanoparticles on rGO by galvanic replacement reaction between Zn and Mn+.

First principles calculations were done to evaluate the lattice parameter, cohesive energy and stacking fault energies of ordered gamma' (Ll(2)) precipitates in superalloys as a function of composition. It was found that addition of Ti and Ta lead to an increase in lattice parameter and decrease in cohesive energy, while Ni antisites had the opposite effect. Ta and Ti addition to stoichiometric Ni3Al resulted in an initial increase in the energies of APB((111)), CSF(111), APB((001)) and SISF(111). However, at higher concentrations, the fault energies decreased. Addition of Ni antisites decreased the energy of all four faults monotonically. A model based on nearest neighbor bonding was used for Ni-3(Al, Ta), Ni-3(Al, Ti) and Ni-3(Al, Ni) pseudo-binary systems and extended to pseudo- ternary Ni-3(Al, Ta, Ni) and Ni-3(Al, Ti, Ni) systems. Recipes were developed for predicting lattice parameters, cohesive energies and fault energies in pseudo- ternary systems on the basis of coefficients derived from simpler pseudobinary systems. The model predictions were found to be in good agreement with first principles calculations for lattice parameters, cohesive energies, and energies of APB((111)) and CSF(111).

2,3-Unsaturated 3-arylsulfinyl pyranosides undergo nucleophilic additions at C-2, with facial selectivities depending on the nucleophile and the substituent on sulfinyl sulfur. The reactions of such sugar vinyl sulfoxides lead to the addition of nucleophile preferring an axial orientation at C-2, with concomitant formation of an allylic bond at C-3 to C-4. This trend in the addition pattern is observed for primary amine, carbon and sulfur nucleophiles, whereas secondary amines prefer an equatorial addition at C-2. The effect of p-tolylthio-versus (p-isopropylphenyl)thio vinyl sulfoxide is that the equatorial nucleophilic addition is preferred even more with the latter vinyl sulfoxide. Silver nanoparticles with an average size of 23 nm were chemically synthesized and used to fabricate Zn-Ag composite coatings. The Zn-Ag composite coatings were generated by electrodeposition method using a simple sulfate plating bath dispersed with 0.5, land 1.5 g/l of Ag nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and texture co-efficient calculations revealed that Ag nanoparticles appreciably influenced the morphology, micro-structure and texture of the deposit. It was also noticed that agglomerates of Ag nanopartides, in the case of high bath load conditions, produced defects and dislocations on the deposit surface. Ag nanoparticles altered the corrosion resistance property of Zn-Ag composite coatings as observed from Tafel polarization, electrochemical impedance analysis and an immersion test. Reduction in corrosion rate with increased charge transfer resistance was observed for Zn-Ag composite coatings when compared to a pure Zn coating. However, the particle concentration in the plating bath and their agglomeration state directly influenced the surface morphology and the subsequent corrosion behavior of the deposits. Undoped and (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanostructure powders are synthesized by chemical precipitation method without using any capping agent and annealed in air ambient at 500 A degrees C for 1 h. Here, the Ag concentration is fixed at 5 mol% and Co concentration is increased from 0 to 5 mol%. The X-ray diffraction studies reveal that undoped and doped ZnO powders consist of pure hexagonal structure and nano-sized crystallites. The novel Raman peak at 530 cm(-1) has corroborated with the Co doped ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, the PL studies reveal that as the Co doping concentration increases and it enters into ZnO lattice as substitutional dopant, it leads to the increase of oxygen vacancies (Vo) and zinc interstitials (Zn-i). From the magnetization measurements, it is noticed that the co-doped ZnO nanostructures exhibit considerably robust ferromagnetism i.e. 4.29 emu g(-1) even at room temperature. These (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanopowders can be used in the fabrication of spintronic and optoelectronic device applications.

Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solders are susceptible to appreciable microstructural coarsening during storage or service. This results in evolution of joint properties over time and thereby influences the long-term reliability of microelectronic packages. Accurate reliability prediction of SAC solders requires prediction of microstructural evolution during service. Microstructure evolution in two SAC solder alloys, such as, Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC 305) and Sn-1.0Ag-0.5 Cu (SAC 105), under different thermomechanical excursions, including isothermal aging at 150 degrees C and thermomechanical cycling (TMC) was studied. In general, between 200 and 600 cycles during TMC, recrystallization of the Sn matrix was observed, along with redistribution of Ag3Sn particles because of dissolution and reprecipitation. These latter effects have not been reported before. It was also observed that the Sn grains recrystallized near precipitate clusters in eutectic channels during extended isothermal aging. The relative orientation of Sn grains in proeutectic colonies did not change during isothermal aging.

A fracture mechanism map (FMM) is a powerful tool which correlates the fracture behavior of a material to its microstructural characteristics in an explicit and convenient way. In the FMM for solder joints, an effective thickness of the interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer (t (eff)) and the solder yield strength (sigma (ys,eff)) are used as abscissa and ordinate axes, respectively, as these two predominantly affect the fracture behavior of solder joints. Earlier, a definition of t (eff), based on the uniform thickness of IMC (t (u)) and the average height of the IMC scallops (t (s)), was proposed and shown to aptly explain the fracture behavior of solder joints on Cu. This paper presents a more general definition of t (eff) that is more widely applicable to a range of metallizations, including Cu and electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG). Using this new definition of t (eff), mode I FMM for SAC387/Cu joints has been updated and its validity was confirmed. A preliminary FMM for SAC387/Cu joints with ENIG metallization is also presented.

Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) studies on quaternary Ge15Te80-xIn5Agx glasses show the non-reversing enthalpy (Delta H-NR) at T-g to exhibit a broad global minimum in the 8% <= x <= 16% range of Ag, an observation that is taken evidence for existence of an Intermediate Phase (IP) in that range. Glasses at x < 8% are in the flexible phase while those at x > 16% in the stressed-rigid phase. The nature of crystalline phases formed upon crystallization of bulk glasses are elucidated by XRD studies, and reveal presence of Te, GeTe, Ag8GeTe6, AgTe, In2Te3 and In4Te3 phases. These experiments also reveal that the fraction of Ag- bearing phases increases while those of Te- bearing ones decreases with increasing x, suggesting progressive replacement of Te-Te bonds by Ag-Te bonds. The paper reports phase evolution in mechanically driven Ag-15 at. pct Sn alloy powder starting with elemental powders in order to establish the feasibility of designing nanocomposites of a Ag-Sn solid solution. This alloy lies in the phase field of the hexagonal zeta-phase which is a well-known Hume-Rothery electron compound with an electron-to-atom ratio of about 1.45 and hexagonal crystal structure (a = 0.2966 nm, c = 0.4782 nm). Through a systematic use of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, the results establish the formation of the zeta-phase which co-exists with the Ag solid solution during the initial phase of milling. Mechanical milling for long duration (55 hours) destabilizes the zeta-phase. A complete solid solution of Ag with a grain size of similar to 8 nm could be achieved after 60 hours of milling. Additional milling can induce decomposition of the solid solution that results in a reappearance of zeta-phase. We present a detailed thermodynamic calculation which indicates that complete Ag solid solution of the present alloy composition would be possible if the crystallites size can be reduced below a certain critical size. In particular, we show that both Ag and zeta-phase grain sizes need to be taken into account for determining the metastable equilibrium and the phase change that has been experimentally observed. Finally, we argue that recrystallization processes set a limit to the achievable size of the nanoparticles with metastable Ag solid solution.

We have synthesized Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles of four different compositions by using the laser ablation technique with the target under aqueous medium. Following this, we report a morphological transition in the nanoparticles from a normal two-phase microstructure to a structure with random segregation and finally a core shell structure at small sizes as a function of Cu concentration. To illustrate the composition dependence of morphology, we report observations carried out on nanoparticles of two different sizes: similar to 5 and similar to 20 nm. The results could be rationalized through the thermodynamic modeling of free energy of phase mixing and wettability of the alloying phases.

Present work provides an electrodeposition based methodology for synthesizing Ag-Ni-Fe nanowires. Nanowire morphology was achieved by using an anodic alumina membrane having cylindrical pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Compositional analysis at a single nanowire level revealed a fairly uniform distribution of component elements in the nanowire volume. Structural characterization strongly indicated toward a presence of randomly oriented, non-equilibrium, nano-crystalline phase volume inside the nanowires. Magnetic characterization revealed a soft magnetic character for the as-synthesized Ag-Ni-Fe nanowires. (C) 2014 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

This work provides an electrodeposition-based methodology for synthesizing multicomponent nanowires containing Ag, Co and Ni atoms. Nanowire morphology was obtained by using an anodic alumina membrane with cylindrical pores of similar to 200-nm diameter. Structural, compositional and magnetic characterization revealed that the as-synthesized nanowires adopted a core-shell microstructure. The core (axial region) contained pure Ag phase volumes with a plate-like morphology oriented perpendicular to the nanowire axis. The shell (peripheral region) contained pure Ag nanoparticles along with superparamagnetic Co and Ni rich clusters.

This report provides information about an electrodeposition based two-step synthesis methodology for producing core-shell Ag-(Ni-O) nanowires and their detailed structural and compositional characterization using electron microscopy technique. Nanowires were produced by employing anodic alumina templates with a pore diameter of 200 nm. In the first step of the synthesis process, nanocrystalline Ni-O was electrodeposited in a controlled manner such that it heterogeneously nucleated and grew only on the template pore walls without filling the pores from bottom upwards. This alumina template with pore walls coated with Ni-O was then utilized as a template during the electrodeposition of Ag in the second step. Electrodeposited Ag filled the template pores to finally produce Ag-(Ni-O) core-shell nanowires with an overall diameter of 200 nm.

Three new inorganic coordination polymers, {Mn(H2O)(6)]-Mn-2(H2O)(6)](Cu-6(mna)(6)]center dot 6H(2)O}, 1, {Mn-4(OH)(2)(H2O)(10)] (Cu-6(mna)6]center dot 8H(2)O}, 2, and {Mn-2(H2O)(5)]Ag-6(Hmna)(2)(mna)(4)]center dot 20H(2)O}, 3, have been synthesized at room temperature through a sequential crystallization route. In addition, we have also prepared and characterized the molecular precursor Cu-6(Hmna)(6)]. Compounds 1 and 3 have a two-dimensional structure, whereas 2 has a three-dimensional structure. The formation of 2 has been achieved by minor modification in the synthetic composition, suggesting the subtle relationship between the reactant composition and the structure. The hexanudear copper and silver duster cores have Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu and Ag center dot center dot center dot Ag distances close to the sum of the van der Waals radii of Cu1+ and Ag1+, respectively. The connectivity between Cu-6(mna)(6)](6-) cluster units and Mn2+ ions gives rise to a brucite related layer in 1 and a pcu-net in 2. The Ag-6(Hmna)(2)(mna)(4)](4-) cluster in 3, on the other hand, forms a sql-net with Mn2+. Compound 1 exhibits an interesting and reversible hydrochromic behavior, changing from pale yellow to red, on heating at 70 degrees C or treatment under a vacuum. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies indicate no change in the valence states, suggesting the color change could be due to changes in the coordination environment only. The magnetic studies indicate weak antiferromagnetic behavior. Proton conductivity studies indicate moderate proton migrations in 1 and 3. The present study dearly establishes sequential crystallization as an important pathway for the synthesis of heterometallic coordination polymers.

Silver nanoparticles-anchored reduced graphene oxide (Ag-RGO) is prepared by simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and Ag+ ions in an aqueous medium by ethylene glycol as the reducing agent. Ag particles of average size of 4.7 nm were uniformly distributed on the RGO sheets. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is studied on Ag-RGO catalyst in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes by using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. As the interest in non-aqueous electrolyte is to study the catalytic performance of Ag-RGO for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells, these cells are assembled and characterized. Li-O-2 cells with Ag-RGO as the oxygen electrode catalyst are subjected to charge-discharge cycling at several current densities. A discharge capacity of 11 950 mA h g(-1) (11.29 mA h cm(-2)) is obtained initially at low current density. Although there is a decrease in the capacity on repeated discharge-charge cycling initially, a stable capacity is observed for about 30 cycles. The results indicate that Ag-RGO is a suitable catalyst for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells.
