New substation technology, such as non-conventional instrument transformers, and a need to reduce design and construction costs, are driving the adoption of Ethernet based digital process bus networks for high voltage substations. Protection and control applications can share a process bus, making more efficient use of the network infrastructure. This paper classifies and defines performance requirements for the protocols used in a process bus on the basis of application. These include GOOSE, SNMP and IEC 61850-9-2 sampled values. A method, based on the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) and virtual local area networks, is presented that separates management and monitoring traffic from the rest of the process bus. A quantitative investigation of the interaction between various protocols used in a process bus is described. These tests also validate the effectiveness of the MSTP based traffic segregation method. While this paper focusses on a substation automation network, the results are applicable to other real-time industrial networks that implement multiple protocols. High volume sampled value data and time-critical circuit breaker tripping commands do not interact on a full duplex switched Ethernet network, even under very high network load conditions. This enables an efficient digital network to replace a large number of conventional analog connections between control rooms and high voltage switchyards.

Knowledge of cable parameters has been well established but a better knowledge of the environment in which the cables are buried lags behind. Research in Queensland University of Technology has been aimed at obtaining and analysing actual daily field values of thermal resistivity and diffusivity of the soil around power cables. On-line monitoring systems have been developed and installed with a data logger system and buried spheres that use an improved technique to measure thermal resistivity and diffusivity over a short period. Results based on long term continuous field data are given. A probabilistic approach is developed to establish the correlation between the measured field thermal resistivity values and rainfall data from weather bureau records. This data from field studies can reduce the risk in cable rating decisions and provide a basis for reliable prediction of “hot spot” of an existing cable circuit

The majority of distribution utilities do not have accurate information on the constituents of their loads. This information is very useful in managing and planning the network, adequately and economically. Customer loads are normally categorized in three main sectors: 1) residential; 2) industrial; and 3) commercial. In this paper, penalized least-squares regression and Euclidean distance methods are developed for this application to identify and quantify the makeup of a feeder load with unknown sectors/subsectors. This process is done on a monthly basis to account for seasonal and other load changes. The error between the actual and estimated load profiles are used as a benchmark of accuracy. This approach has shown to be accurate in identifying customer types in unknown load profiles, and is used in cross-validation of the results and initial assumptions.

Debugging control software for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) can be risky out of the simulator, especially with professional drones that might harm people around or result in a high bill after a crash. We have designed a framework that enables a software application to communicate with multiple MAVs from a single unified interface. In this way, visual controllers can be first tested on a low-cost harmless MAV and, after safety is guaranteed, they can be moved to the production MAV at no additional cost. The framework is based on a distributed architecture over a network. This allows multiple configurations, like drone swarms or parallel processing of drones' video streams. Live tests have been performed and the results show comparatively low additional communication delays, while adding new functionalities and flexibility. This implementation is open-source and can be downloaded from github.com/uavster/mavwork

This paper presents a novel power control strategy that decouples the active and reactive power for a synchronous generator connected to a power network. The proposed control paradigm considers the capacitance of the transmission line along with its resistance and reactance as-well. Moreover the proposed controller takes into account all cases of R-X relationships, thus allowing it to function in Virtual Power Plant (VPP) structures which operate at both medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) levels. The independent control of active and reactive power is achieved through rotational transformations of the terminal voltages and currents at the synchronous generator's output. This paper details the control technique by first presenting the mathematical and electrical network analysis of the methodology and then successfully implementing the control using MATLAB-SIMULINK simulation.

This paper reviews electricity consumption feedback literature to explore the potential of electricity feedback to affect residential consumers’ electricity usage patterns. The review highlights a substantial amount of literature covering the debate over the effectiveness of different feedback criteria to residential customer acceptance and overall conservation and peak demand reduction. Researchers studying the effects of feedback on everyday energy use have observed substantial variation in effect size, both within and between studies. Although researchers still continue to question the types of feedback that are most effective in encouraging conservation and peak load reduction, some trends have emerged. These include that feedback be received as quickly as possible to the time of consumption; be related to a standard; be clear and meaningful and where possible both direct and indirect feedback be customised to the customer. In general, the literature finds that feedback can reduce electricity consumption in homes by 5 to 20 per cent, but that significant gaps remain in our knowledge of the effectiveness and cost benefit of feedback.

The methodology undertaken, the channel model and the system model created for developing a novel adaptive equalization method and a novel channel tracking method for uplink of MU-MIMO-OFDM systems is presented in this paper. The results show that the channel tracking method works with 97% accuracy, while the training-based initial channel estimation method shows poor performance in estimating the actual channel comparatively.

High power piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers have been widely exploited in a variety of applications. The critical behaviour of a piezoelectric device is encapsulated in its resonant frequencies because of its maximum transmission performance at these frequencies. Therefore power electronic converters should be tuned at those resonant frequencies to transfer electrical power to mechanical power efficiently. However, structural and environmental changes cause variations in the device resonant frequencies which can degrade the system performance. Hence, estimating the device resonant frequencies within the incorporated setup can significantly improve the system performance. This paper proposes an efficient resonant frequency estimation approach to maintain the performance of high power ultrasonic applications using the employed power converter. Experimental validations indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Class E Resonant Inverters are theoretically capable of delivering any power to a load and achieve 100% efficiency at any frequency of operation. In practice efficiency in the “high 90's” can be achieved into megahertz frequencies regardless of inverter output powers. The topology also allows the manipulation of output power through sub-optimal operation, with a negligible efficiency penalty. The 24W inverter discussed in this paper was specifically designed to harness the benefits, and discuss the shortcomings, of the Class E topology for use in the growing market for portable, battery powered lighting. It exhibits a peak recorded power efficiently of over 98%, and a conservatively measured efficiency of 95% across a range of dimming settings.

A significant amount of speech is typically required for speaker verification system development and evaluation, especially in the presence of large intersession variability. This paper introduces a source and utterance duration normalized linear discriminant analysis (SUN-LDA) approaches to compensate session variability in short-utterance i-vector speaker verification systems. Two variations of SUN-LDA are proposed where normalization techniques are used to capture source variation from both short and full-length development i-vectors, one based upon pooling (SUN-LDA-pooled) and the other on concatenation (SUN-LDA-concat) across the duration and source-dependent session variation. Both the SUN-LDA-pooled and SUN-LDA-concat techniques are shown to provide improvement over traditional LDA on NIST 08 truncated 10sec-10sec evaluation conditions, with the highest improvement obtained with the SUN-LDA-concat technique achieving a relative improvement of 8% in EER for mis-matched conditions and over 3% for matched conditions over traditional LDA approaches.

This paper describes a generic and integrated solar powered remote Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gas sensing system. The system uses a generic gas sensing system for CH4 and CO2 concentrations using metal oxide (MoX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors, and a new solar cell encapsulation method to power the UASs as well as a data management platform to store, analyse and share the information with operators and external users. The system was successfully field tested at ground and low altitudes, collecting, storing and transmitting data in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping. The system can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications, especially in agriculture, bushfires, mining studies, opening the way to a ubiquitous low cost environmental monitoring. The common goal of tissue engineering is to develop substitutes that can closely mimic the structure of extracellular matrix (ECM). However, similarly important is the intensive material properties which have often been overlooked, in particular, for soft tissues that are not to bear load assumingly. The mechanostructural properties determine not only the structural stability of biomaterials but also their physiological functionality by directing cellular activity and regulating cell fate decision. The aim here is to emphasize that cells could sense intensive material properties like elasticity and reside, proliferate, migrate and differentiate accordinglyno matter if the construct is from a natural source like cartilage, skin etc. or of synthetic one. Meanwhile, the very objective of this work is to provide a tunable scheme for manipulating the elasticity of collagen-based constructs to be used to demonstrate how to engineer cell behavior and regulate mechanotransduction. Articular cartilage was chosen as it represents one of the most complex hierarchical arrangements of collagen meshwork in both connective tissues and ECM-like biomaterials. Corona discharge treatment was used to produce constructs with varying density of crosslinked collagen and stiffness accordingly. The results demonstrated that elastic modulus increased up to 33% for samples treated up to one minute as crosslink density was found to increase with exposure time. According to the thermal analysis, longer exposure to corona increased crosslink density as the denaturation enthalpy increased. However the spectroscopy results suggested that despite the stabilization of the collagen structure the integrity of the triple helical structure remained intact. The in vitro superficial culture of heterologous chondrocytes also determined that the corona treatment can modulate migration with increased focal adhesion of cells due to enhanced stiffness, without cytotoxicity effects, and providing the basis for reinforcing three-dimensional collagen-based biomaterials in order to direct cell function and mediate mechanotransduction.

The University of Queensland (UQ) has extensive laboratory facilities associated with each course in the undergraduate electrical engineering program. The laboratories include machines and drives, power systems simulation, power electronics and intelligent equipment diagnostics. A number of postgraduate coursework programs are available at UQ and the courses associated with these programs also use laboratories. The machine laboratory is currently being renovated with i-lab style web based experimental facilities, which could be remotely accessed. Senior level courses use independent projects using laboratory facilities and this is found to be very useful to improve students' learning skill. Laboratory experiments are always an integral part of a course. Most of the experiments are conducted in a group of 2-3 students and thesis projects in BE and major projects in ME are always individual works. Assessment is done in-class for the performance and also for the report and analysis.

An electricity demand reduction project based on comprehensive residential consumer engagement was established within an Australian community in 2008. By 2011, both the peak demand and grid supplied electricity consumption had decreased to below pre-intervention levels. This case study research explored the relationship developed between the utility, community and individual consumer from the residential customer perspective through qualitative research of 22 residential households. It is proposed that an energy utility can be highly successful at peak demand reduction by becoming a community member and a peer to residential consumers and developing the necessary trust, access, influence and partnership required to create the responsive environment to change. A peer-community approach could provide policymakers with a pathway for implementing pro-environmental behaviour for low carbon communities, as well as peak demand reduction, thereby addressing government emission targets while limiting the cost of living increases from infrastructure expenditure.
