Strong climatic and temperature fluctuations mark the Late Campanian and Maastrichtian as indicated by stable isotope records from the equatorial Pacific (Site 463) and middle and high latitude South Atlantic (Sites 525, 689 and 690). The first major global cooling decreased intermediate water temperatures (IWT) by 5-6°C between 73-70 Ma. At the same time, sea surface temperature (SST) decreased by 4-5°C in middle and high latitudes. Intermediate waters (IW) temporarily warmed by 2°C in low and middle latitudes between 70-68.5 Ma. Global cooling resumed between 68.5-65.5 Ma when IWT decreased by 3-4°C and SST by 5°C in middle latitudes. About 450 ka before the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary rapid global warming increased IWT and SST by 3-4°C, though SST in the tropics changed little. During the last 200 ka of the Maastrichtian, climate cooled rapidly with IWT and SST decreasing by 2-3°C. During the global cooling at 71-70 Ma and possibly at 67-65.5 Ma, the sources of cold intermediate waters in the equatorial Pacific, Indo-Pacific and South Atlantic were derived from the high latitude North Pacific. In contrast, during the global climate warming between 65.2-65.4 Ma, the middle latitude South Atlantic was closest to the source of IW production and implies that the low latitude Tethys played a major role in global climate change. Climate changes, sea-level fluctuations and associated restricted seaways appear to be the most likely mechanisms for the alternating sources of IW production.

Here an inertial sensor-based monitoring system for measuring and analyzing upper limb movements is presented. The final goal is the integration of this motion-tracking device within a portable rehabilitation system for brain injury patients. A set of four inertial sensors mounted on a special garment worn by the patient provides the quaternions representing the patient upper limb’s orientation in space. A kinematic model is built to estimate 3D upper limb motion for accurate therapeutic evaluation. The human upper limb is represented as a kinematic chain of rigid bodies with three joints and six degrees of freedom. Validation of the system has been performed by co-registration of movements with a commercial optoelectronic tracking system. Successful results are shown that exhibit a high correlation among signals provided by both devices and obtained at the Institut Guttmann Neurorehabilitation Hospital.

The singularities which arise when there is a sudden change of boundary conditions are modelled using spectral shape interpolation functions. The procedure can be used for elasticity as well as potential theory and to any degree of accuracy with respect to the smooth part of the curve.

We discuss several methods, based on coordinate transformations, for the evaluation of singular and quasisingular integrals in the direct Boundary Element Method. An intrinsec error of some of these methods is detected. Two new transformations are suggested which improve on those currently available.

Laparoscopic instrument tracking systems are a key element in image-guided interventions, which requires high accuracy to be used in a real surgical scenario. In addition, these systems are a suitable option for objective assessment of laparoscopic technical skills based on instrument motion analysis. This study presents a new approach that improves the accuracy of a previously presented system, which applies an optical pose tracking system to laparoscopic practice. A design enhancement of the artificial markers placed on the laparoscopic instrument as well as an improvement of the calibration process are presented as a means to achieve more accurate results. A technical evaluation has been performed in order to compare the accuracy between the previous design and the new approach. Results show a remarkable improvement in the fluctuation error throughout the measurement platform. Moreover, the accumulated distance error and the inclination error have been improved. The tilt range covered by the system is the same for both approaches, from 90º to 7.5º. The relative position error is better for the new approach mainly at close distances to the camera system

Estas notas, que se publican en dos volúmenes, surgen como resultado de las clases de doctorado que, durante el curso académico 1979-80, impartió Avelino Samartín en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de la Universidad de Santander. El objetivo del curso era ambicioso ya que se intentaban presentar, de un modo panorámico, los distintos procedimientos analíticos y semianalíticos de Cálculo de Estructuras así como su aplicación al análisis efectivo de diferentes casos prácticos: vigas, placas y láminas. La publicación que se presenta es el volumen uno, que corresponde a la primera parte del curso, referente a los métodos generales de cálculo y su aplicación a casos sencillos : estructuras 1-D y 2-D. También se incluye, en el capítulo 5, una combinación natural de elementos 2-D - laja y placa-, correspondiente a la lámina plegada. Se deja para un segundo volumen el estudio de otras estructuras laminares específicas, así como la introducción a la teoría general de láminas. A lo largo del curso -y en estas notas se refleja- se ha intentado mostrar la identidad de la metodología existente en todo el cálculo estructural , desde la estructura más simple -columna- a la más compleja -lámina-, tanto en su planteamiento como en su resolución. Con esta publicación se desea -aparte de cubrir un evidente vacío bibliográfico, en nuestra lengua, sobre el tema- impulsar el uso de los diferentes métodos analíticos que actualmente existen y que, por causas bien conocidas - facilidad de computación - han sido, en opinión de los autores, inmerecidamente relegados al olvido, cuando podrían, muchas veces, sustituir , o al menos complementar, otras técnicas numéricas más potentes.

Stress singularities appear at the extremities of an adhesive bond. They can produce a damage mechanism that we assimilate in this Note to a crack. The energy release rate permits to characterize its evolution. But a very refined mesh would be necessary for a real structure. Using an asymptotic method based on the small thickness of the bond a limit model with a different local behaviour is suggested. It leads to an approximation of the energy release rate

The aim of the study was to evaluate the match work-rate of Chinese field hockey players by analyzing the distance covered at different intensities pooled by specific positions during different periods of matches. Falls are one of the greatest threats to elderly health in their daily living routines and activities. Therefore, it is very important to detect falls of an elderly in a timely and accurate manner, so that immediate response and proper care can be provided, by sending fall alarms to caregivers. Radar is an effective non-intrusive sensing modality which is well suited for this purpose, which can detect human motions in all types of environments, penetrate walls and fabrics, preserve privacy, and is insensitive to lighting conditions. Micro-Doppler features are utilized in radar signal corresponding to human body motions and gait to detect falls using a narrowband pulse-Doppler radar. Human motions cause time-varying Doppler signatures, which are analyzed using time-frequency representations and matching pursuit decomposition (MPD) for feature extraction and fall detection. The extracted features include MPD features and the principal components of the time-frequency signal representations. To analyze the sequential characteristics of typical falls, the extracted features are used for training and testing hidden Markov models (HMM) in different falling scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm and method achieve fast and accurate fall detections. The risk of falls increases sharply when the elderly or patients try to exit beds. Thus, if a bed exit can be detected at an early stage of this motion, the related injuries can be prevented with a high probability. To detect bed exit for fall prevention, the trajectory of head movements is used for recognize such human motion. A head detector is trained using the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) features of the head and shoulder areas from recorded bed exit images. A data association algorithm is applied on the head detection results to eliminate head detection false alarms. Then the three dimensional (3D) head trajectories are constructed by matching scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) keypoints in the detected head areas from both the left and right stereo images. The extracted 3D head trajectories are used for training and testing an HMM based classifier for recognizing bed exit activities. The results of the classifier are presented and discussed in the thesis, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed stereo vision based bed exit detection approach.

Although research in the area of immigrants and their physical activity patterns has been steadily growing, there is still much to learn. The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers, facilitators and motivators facing recent Canadian immigrants as they relate to involvement in coaching youth sport. The quantitative information presented in the first article of this series served as a framework for conducting semi-structured qualitative interviews with 28 immigrant youth-sport coaches. Results of these interviews support the notion that there are two distinct groups of immigrant coaches - the ‘leisure-oriented coach’ (those without coaching occupational aspirations) and the ‘career-oriented coach’ (those with coaching occupational pursuits). Despite sharing several of the same barriers, facilitators and motivators, each group showed marked divergence from the other on a number of aspects in each of these three categories.
