Determining the diet of insects present in cotton should be among the first steps in any applied research program. Omnivorous species are particularly important as they have the potential to suppress pest populations through prey feeding, but also to cause economic damage to the crop through plant feeding.

The prevalence, mode of inheritance and urinalysis findings in Bull Terriers with polycystic kidney disease were assessed by screening 150 clinically normal dogs. The disorder was diagnosed in 39 dogs on the basis of renal ultrasound results and family history of the disease. In equivocal cases confirmation required gross and histopathological renal examination. Necropsy was performed on nine affected dogs and the kidneys from another five affected animals were also examined. Renal cysts were usually bilateral, occurred in cortex and medulla and varied from less than 1 mm to over 2.5 cm in diameter. Cysts were lined by epithelial cells of nephron origin. Abnormal urine sediment and proteinuria were common in affected dogs. The disease appears to be inherited in a highly penetrant autosomal dominant manner.

The challenge of Research, Development and Extension (R,D&E) is to apply agricultural science to serve the real needs of production systems. The ideal is to have community partnerships involving a variety of stakeholders with equal representation, and a sharing in the design of R, D&E actions. R,D&E policy in Australia is stressing the participation of industry in new projects. The Dairy Research and Development Corporation (DRDC) in Australia, and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation for Dairy (Embrapa Dairy), have developed initiatives to identify priorities for R,D&E design with participation of the industry. However, weaknesses in the methods have been identified. The present study describes the results of a strategy to involve a broader range of stakeholders in the identification of regional dairy industry needs. The findings show that overall communication, finance and marketing as the three major priorities of three study regions, meaning that primary needs for the industry are not in production technologies. This is an apparent contradiction with what some stakeholders considered valuable for dairy farms, which are pasture, genetics and nutrition technologies. The results reflect the large amount of research activity into production technology, and the relative success of R,D&E. However, it is necessary to consider issues beyond production technologies before developing R,D&E projects or presenting technologies.

More than 200 known diseases are transmitted via foods or food products. In the United States, food-borne diseases are responsible for 76 million cases of illness, 32,500 cases of hospitalisation and 5000 cases of death yearly. The ongoing increase in worldwide trade in livestock, food, and food products in combination with increase in human mobility (business- and leisure travel, emigration etc.) will increase the risk of emergence and spreading of such pathogens. There is therefore an urgent need for development of rapid, efficient and reliable methods for detection and identification of such pathogens.
Microchipfabrication has had a major impact on electronics and is expected to have an equally pronounced effect on life sciences. By combining micro-fluidics with micromechanics, micro-optics, and microelectronics, systems can be realized to perform complete chemical or biochemical analyses. These socalled ’Lab-on-a-Chip’ will completely change the face of laboratories in the future where smaller, fully automated devices will be able to perform assays faster, more accurately, and at a lower cost than equipment of today. A general introduction of food safety and applied micro-nanotechnology in life sciences will be given. In addition, examples of DNA micro arrays, micro fabricated integrated PCR chips and total integrated lab-on-achip systems from different National and EU research projects being carried out at the Laboratory of Applied Micro- Nanotechnology (LAMINATE) group at the National Veterinary Institute (DTU-Vet) Technical University of Denmark and the BioLabchip group at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU-Nanotech), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Ikerlan-IK4 (Spain) and other 16 partners from different European countries will be presented.

In a world of constant and rapid change there are greater demands placed on learners to not only gain content knowledge, but also to develop learning skills and to adopt new strategies that will enable them to produce better and faster learning outcomes. Especially in internationally advancing nations like Kuwait this will be a major challenge of the future. This literature review examines theoretical frameworks that enhance Kuwaiti teachers’ knowledge and skill to adopt culturally relevant reform practices across a number of disciplines and provide guidance in an exploration and use of newer pedagogical tools like graphic organisers. It analyses the effects of graphic organisers on higher order learning and evaluates how they can effect professional development and pedagogical change in Kuwait.

Driven by information accessibility-on-demand provided by the internet, education modes are changing from a teacher-led approach focused on content delivery and assessible outcomes, to a learner-based approach encouraging self-directed, peer-tutored, and cooperative learning. New pedagogies are required to extend learning beyond the classroom and traditional subject areas such as contemporary arts, in alignment with the cross disciplinary priorities of the Australian Curriculum and values of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. This research explores how partnerships with universities and cultural organisations are implicated in the generation of these new forms of pedagogy and contribute to the field of educational research within the context of Education Queensland’s Framework For Gifted Education. In particular, this paper explores a new pedagogical framework for highly capable year five to nine Queensland state school students at the intersection of arts, design and the sciences, which has arisen from an explicit secondary/ tertiary partnership between the Queensland University of Technology Creative Industries Faculty and Precincts and the Queensland Academies Young Scholars Program. The Young Scholars Program offers experiences in the International Baccalaureate and Australian Curriculum contexts to enhance outcomes via global understanding, unique industry partnerships and 21st century pedagogical innovation based not on 'content' but tacit/experiential learning concepts including immersive, creative, intellectual and social strategies. These strategies for highly capable students are centred around authentic opportunities, primary resources, transdisciplinary learning and relationships with likeminded peers including tertiary arts, design and STEM educators and students, professionals and researchers. The presentation details case studies which are hands-on real time workshops involving inquiry based challenges in the arts, design and sciences, mathematics, history, creative writing and other disciplines, with content drawn from collections from public institutions, academic research and tertiary pedagogy. Both programs implicate student collaboration and creative production as methodology/data capture for ongoing action research, in alignment with the Framework For Gifted Education’s emphasis on evidence-based practices. They also challenge gifted students “to continue their development through curricular activities that require depth of study, complexity of thinking, fast pace of learning, high-level skills development and/or creative and critical thinking (e.g. through independent investigations, tiered tasks, diverse real-world applications, mentors)”(Education Queensland, 2011:3). This presentation highlights the strengths of the ongoing collaboration between QUT Creative industries Faculty and Queensland Academies, which not only provides successful extra curricular activities for gifted students towards a place in the International Baccalaureate Program, but also provides mentoring opportunities for tertiary students in their field of endeavor to assist with their own learning, and unique research opportunities for the Faculty as it focuses on excellence in arts, design and creative education and research. In the recent time CFD tools have become increasingly useful in the engineering design studies especially in the area of aerospace vehicles. This is largely due to the advent of high speed computing platforms in addition to the development of new efficient algorithms. The algorithms based on kinetic schemes have been shown to be very robust and further meshless methods offer certain advantages over the other methods. Preliminary investigations of blood flow visualization through artery using CFD tool have shown encouraging results which further needs to be verified and validated.
