New toothpastes with anti-erosion claims are marketed, but little is known about their effectiveness. This study investigates these products in comparison with various conventional NaF toothpastes and tin-containing products with respect to their erosion protection/abrasion prevention properties. In experiment 1, samples were demineralised (10 days, 6 × 2 min/day; citric acid, pH 2.4), exposed to toothpaste slurries (2 × 2 min/day) and intermittently stored in a mineral salt solution. In experiment 2, samples were additionally brushed for 15 s during the slurry immersion time. Study products were 8 conventional NaF toothpastes (1,400-1,490 ppm F), 4 formulations with anti-erosion claims (2 F toothpastes: NaF + KNO(3) and NaF + hydroxyapatite; and 2 F-free toothpastes: zinc-carbonate-hydroxyapatite, and chitosan) and 2 Sn-containing products (toothpaste: 3,436 ppm Sn, 1,450 ppm F as SnF(2)/NaF; gel: 970 ppm F, 3,030 ppm Sn as SnF(2)). A mouth rinse (500 ppm F as AmF/NaF, 800 ppm Sn as SnCl(2)) was the positive control. Tissue loss was quantified profilometrically. In experiment 1, most NaF toothpastes and 1 F-free formulation reduced tissue loss significantly (between 19 and 42%); the Sn-containing formulations were the most effective (toothpaste and gel 55 and 78% reduction, respectively). In experiment 2, only 4 NaF toothpastes revealed significant effects compared to the F-free control (reduction between 29 and 37%); the F-free special preparations and the Sn toothpaste had no significant effect. The Sn gel (reduction 75%) revealed the best result. Conventional NaF toothpastes reduced the erosive tissue loss, but had limited efficacy regarding the prevention of brushing abrasion. The special formulations were not superior, or were even less effective.

PURPOSE: To provide an overview on diagnosis, risk factors and prevention of erosive tooth wear, which is becoming an increasingly important factor when considering the long- term health of the dentition. RESULTS: Awareness of dental erosion by the public is still not widespread due to the cryptic nature of this slowly progressing condition. Smooth silky-glazed appearance with the absence of perikymata and intact enamel along the gingival margin, with cupping and grooving on occlusal surfaces are some typical signs of enamel erosion. In later stages, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the influences of erosion, attrition or abrasion during a clinical examination. Biological, behavioral and chemical factors all come into play, which over time, may either wear away the tooth surface, or potentially protect it. In order to assess the risk factors, patient should record their dietary intake for a distinct period of time. Based on these analyses, an individually tailored preventive program may be suggested to patients. It may comprise dietary advice, optimization of fluoride regimes, stimulation of salivary flow rate, use of buffering medicaments and particular motivation for non-destructive tooth brushing habits. The frequent use of fluoride gel and fluoride mouthrinse in addition to fluoride toothpaste offers the opportunity to minimize abrasion of tooth substance.

A prerequisite for preventive measures is to diagnose erosive tooth wear and to evaluate the different etiological factors in order to identify persons at risk. No diagnostic device is available for the assessment of erosive defects. Thus, they can only be detected clinically. Consequently, erosion not diagnosed in the early stage may render timely preventive measures difficult. In order to assess the risk factors, patient should record their dietary intake for a distinct period of time. Then a dentist can determine the erosive potential of the diet. Particularly, patients with more than four dietary acid intakes have a higher risk for erosion when other risk factors (such as holding the drink in the mouth) are present. Regurgitation of gastric acids (reflux, vomiting, alcohol abuse, etc.) is a further important risk factor for the development of erosion which has to be taken into account. Based on these analyses, an individually tailored preventive program may be suggested to the patients. It may comprise dietary advice, optimization of fluoride regimes, stimulation of salivary flow rate, use of buffering medicaments and particular motivation for nondestructive toothbrushing habits with a low abrasive toothpaste. The frequent use of fluoride gel and fluoride solution in addition to fluoride toothpaste offers the opportunity to reduce somewhat abrasion of tooth substance. It is also advisable to avoid abrasive tooth cleaning and whitening products, since they may remove the pellicle and may render teeth more susceptible to erosion. Since erosion, attrition and abrasion often occur simultaneously all causative components must be taken into consideration when planning preventive strategies.

The aim of the present study was to test the impact of different toothpastes on the prevention of erosion. Enamel demineralization and remineralization were monitored using surface microhardness (SMH) measurements. Human enamel specimens were treated following two different procedures: (1) incubation in toothpaste slurry followed by acid softening and artificial saliva exposure; (2) acid softening followed by incubation in toothpaste slurry and artificial saliva exposure. For the control procedure, toothpaste treatment was excluded. The following toothpastes were tested: Zendium, Sensodyne Proschmelz (Pronamel), Prodent Rocket Power, Meridol and Signal active. Normalized SMH values compared to the baseline (= 1.00) after 1-hour artificial saliva exposure for procedure 1 (respectively for procedure 2) were as follows (mean: 95% CI): Sensodyne Proschmelz 0.97: 0.93, 1.00 (0.92: 0.90, 0.94), Zendium 0.97: 0.94, 1.00 (0.89: 0.83, 0.95), Meridol 0.97: 0.94, 1.00 (0.94: 0.92, 0.96), Signal active 0.94: 0.91, 0.97 (0.95: 0.91, 0.99), Prodent Rocket Power 0.92: 0.90, 0.94 (0.93: 0.89, 0.97) and control 0.91: 0.88, 0.94. Further exposure to artificial saliva for up to 4 h showed no significant improvement of SMH. Regression analyses revealed a significant impact of the applied procedure. Incubation in toothpaste slurries before the acid challenge seems to be favorable to prevent erosion. None of the tested toothpastes showed statistically significant better protection than another against an erosive attack.

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare toothbrush abrasion of softened enamel after brushing with two (soft and hard) toothbrushes. One hundred and fifty-six human enamel specimens were indented with a Knoop diamond. Salivary pellicle was formed in vitro over a period of 3 h. Erosive lesions were produced by means of 1% citric acid. A force-measuring device allowed a controlled toothbrushing force of 1.5 N. The specimens were brushed either in toothpaste slurry or with toothpaste in artificial saliva for 15 s. Enamel loss was calculated from the change in indentation depth of the same indent before and after abrasion. Mean surface losses (95% CI) were recorded in ten treatment groups: (1) soft toothbrush only [28 (17-39) nm]; (2) hard toothbrush only [25 (16-34) nm]; (3) soft toothbrush in Sensodyne MultiCare slurry [46 (27-65) nm]; (4) hard toothbrush in Sensodyne MultiCare slurry [45 (24-66) nm]; (5) soft toothbrush in Colgate sensation white slurry [71 (55-87) nm]; (6) hard toothbrush in Colgate sensation white slurry [85 (60-110) nm]; (7) soft toothbrush with Sensodyne MultiCare [48 (39-57) nm]; (8) hard toothbrush with Sensodyne MultiCare [40 (29-51) nm]; (9) soft toothbrush with Colgate sensation white [51 (37-65) nm]; (10) hard toothbrush with Colgate sensation white [52 (36-68) nm]. Neither soft nor hard toothbrushes produced significantly different toothbrush abrasion of softened human enamel in this model (p > 0.05).

Objectives: To investigate surface roughness and microhardness of two recent resin-ceramic materials for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) after polishing with three polishing systems. Surface roughness and microhardness were measured immediately after polishing and after six months storage including monthly artificial toothbrushing. Methods: Sixty specimens of Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE) and 60 specimens of VITA ENAMIC (VITA Zahnfabrik) were roughened in a standardized manner and polished with one of three polishing systems (n=20/group): Sof-Lex XT discs (SOFLEX; three-step (medium-superfine); 3M ESPE), VITA Polishing Set Clinical (VITA; two-step; VITA Zahnfabrik), or KENDA Unicus (KENDA; one-step; KENDA Dental). Surface roughness (Ra; μm) was measured with a profilometer and microhardness (Vickers; VHN) with a surface hardness indentation device. Ra and VHN were measured immediately after polishing and after six months storage (tap water, 37°C) including monthly artificial toothbrushing (500 cycles/month, toothpaste RDA ~70). Ra- and VHN-values were analysed with nonparametric ANOVA followed by Wilcoxon rank sum tests (α=0.05). Results: For Lava Ultimate, Ra (mean [standard deviation] before/after storage) remained the same when polished with SOFLEX (0.18 [0.09]/0.19 [0.10]; p=0.18), increased significantly with VITA (1.10 [0.44]/1.27 [0.39]; p=0.0001), and decreased significantly with KENDA (0.35 [0.07]/0.33 [0.08]; p=0.03). VHN (mean [standard deviation] before/after storage) decreased significantly regardless of polishing system (SOFLEX: 134.1 [5.6]/116.4 [3.6], VITA: 138.2 [10.5]/115.4 [5.9], KENDA: 135.1 [6.2]/116.7 [6.3]; all p<0.0001). For VITA ENAMIC, Ra (mean [standard deviation] before/after storage) increased significantly when polished with SOFLEX (0.37 [0.18]/0.41 [0.14]; p=0.01) and remained the same with VITA (1.32 [0.37]/1.31 [0.40]; p=0.58) and with KENDA (0.81 [0.35]/0.78 [0.32]; p=0.21). VHN (mean [standard deviation] before/after storage) remained the same regardless of polishing system (SOFLEX: 284.9 [24.6]/282.4 [31.8], VITA: 284.6 [28.5]/276.4 [25.8], KENDA: 292.6 [26.9]/282.9 [24.3]; p=0.42-1.00). Conclusion: Surface roughness and microhardness of Lava Ultimate was more affected by storage and artificial toothbrushing than was VITA ENAMIC.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of biannual fluoride varnish applications in preschool children as an adjunct to school-based oral health promotion and supervised tooth brushing with 1000ppm fluoride toothpaste. METHODS 424 preschool children, 2-5 year of age, from 10 different pre schools in Athens were invited to this double-blind randomized controlled trial and 328 children completed the 2-year programme. All children received oral health education with hygiene instructions twice yearly and attended supervised tooth brushing once daily. The test group was treated with fluoride varnish (0.9% diflurosilane) biannually while the control group had placebo applications. The primary endpoints were caries prevalence and increment; secondary outcomes were gingival health, mutans streptococci growth and salivary buffer capacity. RESULTS The groups were balanced at baseline and no significant differences in caries prevalence or increment were displayed between the groups after 1 and 2 years, respectively. There was a reduced number of new pre-cavitated enamel lesions during the second year of the study (p=0.05) but the decrease was not statistically significant. The secondary endpoints were unaffected by the varnish treatments. CONCLUSIONS Under the present conditions, biannual fluoride varnish applications in preschool children did not show significant caries-preventive benefits when provided as an adjunct to school-based supervised tooth brushing with 1000ppm fluoride toothpaste. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE In community based, caries prevention programmes, for high caries risk preschool children, a fluoride varnish may add little to caries prevention, when 1000ppm fluoride toothpaste is used daily.

It may comprise dietary advice, use of calcium-enriched beverages, optimization of prophylactic regimes, stimulation of salivary flow rate, use of buffering medicaments and particular motivation for nondestructive toothbrushing habits with an erosive-protecting toothpaste as well as rinsing solutions. Since erosion and abrasion often occur simultaneously, all of the causative components must be taken into consideration when planning preventive strategies but only those important and feasible for an individual should be communicated to the patient.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) has long been used as an additive in toothpaste, partly because it reduces biofilm formation on teeth. It does not, however, reduce the formation of dental calculus or support the remineralization of dental enamel or dentine. The present article describes the synthesis of new block copolymers on the basis of PEO and poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) blocks using atom transfer radical polymerization. The polymers have very large molecular weights (over 10(6) g/mol) and are highly water-soluble. They delay the precipitation of calcium phosphate from aqueous solution but, upon precipitation, lead to relatively monodisperse hydroxyapatite (HAP) spheres. Moreover, the polymers inhibit the bacterial colonization of human enamel by Streptococcus gordonii, a pioneer bacterium in oral biofilm formation, in vitro. The formation of well-defined HAP spheres suggests that a polymer-induced liquid precursor phase could be involved in the precipitation process. Moreover, the inhibition of bacterial adhesion suggests that the polymers could be utilized in caries prevention.

When considering data from many trials, it is likely that some of them present a markedly different intervention effect or exert an undue influence on the summary results. We develop a forward search algorithm for identifying outlying and influential studies in meta-analysis models. The forward search algorithm starts by fitting the hypothesized model to a small subset of likely outlier-free studies and proceeds by adding studies into the set one-by-one that are determined to be closest to the fitted model of the existing set. As each study is added to the set, plots of estimated parameters and measures of fit are monitored to identify outliers by sharp changes in the forward plots. We apply the proposed outlier detection method to two real data sets; a meta-analysis of 26 studies that examines the effect of writing-to-learn interventions on academic achievement adjusting for three possible effect modifiers, and a meta-analysis of 70 studies that compares a fluoride toothpaste treatment to placebo for preventing dental caries in children. A simple simulated example is used to illustrate the steps of the proposed methodology, and a small-scale simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. AIM To systematically assess the efficacy of patient-administered mechanical and/or chemical plaque control protocols in the management of peri-implant mucositis (PM). MATERIAL AND METHODS Randomized (RCTs) and Controlled Clinical Trials (CCTs) were identified through an electronic search of three databases complemented by manual search. Identification, screening, eligibility and inclusion of studies was performed independently by two reviewers. Studies without professional intervention or with only mechanical debridement professionally administered were included. Quality assessment was performed by means of the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. RESULTS Eleven RCTs with a follow-up from 3 to 24 months were included. Definition of PM was lacking or heterogeneously reported. Complete resolution of PM was not achieved in any study. One study reported 38% of patients with complete resolution of PM. Surrogate end-point outcomes of PM therapy were often reported. The choice of control interventions showed great variability. The efficacy of powered toothbrushes, a triclosan-containing toothpaste and adjunctive antiseptics remains to be established. High quality of methods and reporting was found in four studies. CONCLUSIONS Professionally- and patient-administered mechanical plaque control alone should be considered the standard of care in the management of PM. Therapy of PM is a prerequisite for the prevention of peri-implantitis.

For preventing erosive wear in dentine, coating with adhesives has been suggested as an alternative to fluoridation. However, clinical studies have revealed limited efficacy. As there is first evidence that Sn(2+) increases bond strength of the adhesive Clearfil SE (Kuraray), the aim of the present study was to investigate whether pre-treatment with different Sn(2+)/F(-) solutions improves the durability of Clearfil SE coatings. Dentine samples (eight groups, n=16/group) were freed of smear layer (0.5% citric acid, 10 s), treated (15 s) either with no solution (control), aminefluoride (AmF, 500 ppm F(-), pH 4.5), SnCl2 (800/1600 ppm Sn(2+); pH 1.5), SnCl2/AmF (500 ppm F(-), 800 ppm Sn(2+), pH 1.5/3.0/4.5), or Elmex Erosion Protection Rinse (EP, 500 ppm F-, 800 ppm Sn(2+), pH 4.5; GABA International), then rinsed with water (15 s) and individually covered with Clearfil SE. Subsequently the specimens were subjected to an erosion/abrasion protocol consisting of 1320 cycles of immersion in 0.5% citric acid (5 °C/55 °C; 2 min) and automated brushing (15 s, 200 g, NaF-toothpaste, RDA 80). As the coatings proved stable up to 1320 cycles, 60 modified cycles (brushing time 30 min/cycle) were added. Wear was measured profilometrically. After SnCl2/AmF, pH 4.5 or EP pre-treatment all except one coating survived. In the other groups, almost all coatings were lost and there was no significant difference to the control group. Pre-treatment with a Sn(2+)/F(-) solution at pH 4.5 seems able to improve the durability of adhesive coatings, rendering these an attractive option in preventing erosive wear in dentine.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a variação da massa e rugosidade de pastilhas de Ti-6Al-4V com e sem aplicação superficial de nanopartículas de prata coloidal (BSafe®) de dimensões 1,5 cm; 0,5 cm e 0,2 cm, submetidas à teste de escovação e imersão pelo período experimental de 10 anos. No teste de escovação, quinze espécimes de Ti-6Al-4V (TE), quinze com B-Safe® (BE) e quinze de PMMA (PE) como controle foram subdivididos em três condições de escovação: dentifrício comum (DC), dentifrício experimental (DE) e controle com água destilada (H2O) por 200 mil ciclos em máquina de escovação. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste ANOVA a 2 critérios (condição de escovação e ciclos) e teste de Tukey (α=0,05) para comparações múltiplas. Foi observada variação de massa apenas quando a condição de escovação foi DC nos espécimes do grupo PE e TE. Houve diferença estatisticamente significante nos valores da variação de rugosidade no grupo TE e PE quando a condição de escovação foi DC; no grupo BE, houve diferença quando a condição foi DC e DE, porém em DE houve redução dos valores médios. No teste de imersão, objetivando analisar a ação dos dentifrícios sem o atrito das cerdas, seis espécimes de Ti-6Al-4V (TI) e seis com B-Safe® (BI) foram subdivididos em três condições de imersão: DC, DE e H2O pelo período de 244 horas. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste t de student pareado. Não foi observada diferença estatística entre as variações de massa e rugosidade de nenhum dos corpos de prova após o teste. Complementar aos ensaios, foi realizado um protocolo de desinfecção com terapia fotodinâmica com azul de metileno pelo período de 4 semanas nos espécimes escovados. Após todos os testes, foi realizada espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDS) para caracterização dos elementos químicos presentes nos espécimes, onde não se observou variações. Os resultados sugerem que o DE é mais indicado para utilização com implantes, enquanto DC apresenta um poder abrasivo capaz de danificar a superfície do Ti-6Al- 4V. Não foi observado nenhum indício de corrosão em nenhum grupo testado.

Este estudo possui duas partes distintas: 1. in vivo (randomizado e longitudinal) que teve como objetivo avaliar protocolos de tratamento para hipersensibilidade dentinária com laser de baixa potência (com diferentes dosagens), laser de alta potência e agente dessensibilizante, por um período de 12 e 18 meses; e 2. in vitro que teve como objetivo analisar a perda de estrutura de dois dentifrícios distintos (Colgate Total 12 e Colgate Pró Alívio) e analisar a permeabilidade dentinária dos tratamentos da etapa 01, associados aos dentifrícios, após diferentes ciclos de abrasão. Na parte in vivo, as lesões cervicais não cariosas de 32 voluntários, previamente submetidos aos critérios de elegibilidade ou exclusão, foram divididas em nove grupos (n=10): G1: Gluma Desensitizer (Heraeus Kulzer), G2: Laser de baixa potência com baixa dosagem (Photon Lase, DMC) (três pontos de irradiação vestibulares e um ponto apical: 30 mW, 10 J/cm2, 9 seg por ponto com o comprimento de onda de 810nm). Foram realizadas três sessões com um intervalo de 72 horas), G3: Laser de baixa potência com alta dosagem (um ponto cervical e um ponto apical: 100 mW, 90 J/cm2, 11 seg por ponto com o comprimento de onda de 810nm. Foram realizadas três sessões com um intervalo de 72 horas), G4: Laser de baixa potência com baixa dosagem + Gluma Desensitizer, G5: Laser de baixa potência com alta dosagem + Gluma Desensitizer, G6: Laser de Nd:YAG (Power LaserTM ST6, Lares Research®), em contato com a superfície dental: 1,0W, 10 Hz e 100 mJ, ? 85 J/cm2, com o comprimento de onda de 1064nm, G7: Laser de Nd:YAG + Gluma Desensitizer, G8: Laser de Nd:YAG + Laser de baixa potência com baixa dosagem, G9: Laser de Nd:YAG + Laser de baixa potência com alta dosagem. O nível de sensibilidade de cada voluntário foi avaliado através da escala visual analógica de dor (VAS) com auxílio do ar da seringa tríplice e exploração com sonda após 12 e 18 meses do tratamento. Na parte 02, in vitro, foram utilizados terceiros molares humanos não irrompidos e recém-extraídos. Todos foram limpos e tiveram suas raízes separadas das coroas. As raízes foram seccionadas em quadrados de dentina com dimensões de 4x4x2 mm, os quais foram embutidos em resina Epoxi e devidamente polidos até uma curvatura de 0,3 ?m, analisados em perfilometria ótica. Estes foram imersos em solução de EDTA 17% por 2min para abertura dos túbulos e armazenados em uma solução de Soro Fetal Bovino diluído em salina tamponada com fosfato. Os espécimes foram divididos aleatoriamente em 12 grupos (n=10) G1: Sem tratamento de superfície, sem dentifrício; G2: Nd:YAG/sem dentifrício; G3: Gluma/sem dentifrício; G4: Nd:YAG + Gluma/sem dentifrício; G5: Sem tratamento de superfície/Colgate Total 12; G6: Nd:YAG/Colgate Total 12; G7: Gluma/Colgate Total 12; G8: Nd:YAG + Gluma/Colgate Total 12; G9: Sem tratamento de superfície/Colgate Pró Alívio; G10: Nd:YAG/Colgate Pró Alívio; G11: Gluma/Colgate Pró Alívio; G12: Nd:YAG + Gluma/Colgate Pró Alívio. Em seguida, as superfícies receberam a aplicação de fitas adesivas nas duas margens, mantendo uma área central de teste exposta de 4 x 1 mm, onde foram realizados os tratamentos de superfície e os ciclos de abrasão correspondentes a 1, 7, 30 e 90 dias de escovação (52 ciclos, 210 segundos de contato com o slurry; 361 ciclos, 1470 segundos de contato com o slurry; 1545 ciclos, 6300 segundos de contato com o slurry; 4635 ciclos, 18900 segundos de contato com o slurry, respectivamente). A cada etapa de abrasão, foi realizada análise em Perfilometria Ótica. Para as analises de permeabilidade e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura, foram utilizadas amostras circulares de 6 mm de diâmetro e 1 mm de espessura de dentina obtidas das coroas dentais. Estas foram divididas aleatoriamente nos mesmos grupos já descritos anteriormente, sendo que 120 espécimes foram utilizados para permeabilidade (n=10) e 36 para MEV (n=3). Ambas as análises foram realizadas após imersão no EDTA; após tratamentos para a sensibilidade; pós 1 dia, 7 dias, 30 dias e 90 dias de escovação. Após análise estatística pode-se concluir que, in vivo, todos os tratamentos foram eficazes para a redução da hipersensibilidade dentinária. Ainda que o nível da sensibilidade dos pacientes aumentou numericamente, estes não são considerados estatisticamente diferentes a partir de 12 meses. Portanto, até a avaliação de 18 meses, podemos concluir que não houve um aumento na sensibilidade dentinária desde a sua diminuição pós-tratamento. In vitro, pode-se concluir que todos os tratamentos foram capazes de diminuir a permeabilidade dentinária. O dentifrício Total 12 apresentou-se como o mais abrasivo em comparação com o dentifrício Pro Alivio, pois este último promoveu uma perda de estrutura menor, porém ambos não apresentaram aumento na permeabilidade nos tempos de escovação. As microscopias eletrônicas de varredura mostram a formação da smear layer, obliterando os túbulos para ambos os dentifricios. Como conclusão, pode-se afirmar que todos os agentes dessensibilizantes foram efetivos, mesmo apresentando estratégias de ação diferentes. Book revew: Marketinggeschichte: die Genese einer modernen Sozialtechnik [Marketing history: The genesis of a modern social technique], edited by Hartmut Berghoff, Frankfurt/Main, Campus Verlag, 2007, 409 pp., illus., [euro]30.00 (paperback), ISBN 978-3-593-38323-1. This edited volume is the result of a workshop at Göttingen University in 2006 and combines a number of different approaches to the research into the history of marketing in Germany's economy and society. The majority of contributions loosely focus around the occurrence of a ‘marketing revolution’ in the 1970s, which ties in with interpretations of the Americanisation of German business. This revolution replaced the indigenous German idea of Absatzwirtschaft (the economics of sales) with the American-influenced idea of Marketing, which was less functionally oriented and more strategic, and which aimed to connect processes within the firm in order to allow a greater focus on the consumer. The entire volume is framed by Hartmut Berghoff's substantial and informative introduction, which introduces a number of actors and trends beyond the content of the volume. Throughout the various contributions, authors provide explanations of the timing and nature of marketing revolutions. Alexander Engel identifies an earlier revolution in the marketing of dyes, which undergoes major change with the emergence of chemical dyes. While the natural dyestuff had been a commodity, with producers removed from consumers via a global network of traders, chemical dyes were products and were branded at an early stage. This was a fundamental change in the nature of production and sales. As Roman Rossfeld shows in his contribution on the Swiss chocolate industry (which focuses almost exclusively on Suchard), even companies that produced non-essential consumer goods which had always required some measure of labelling grappled for years with the need to develop fewer and higher impact brands, as well as an efficient sales operation. A good example for the classical ‘marketing revolution’ of the 1970s is the German automobile industry. Ingo Köhler convincingly argues that the crisis situation of German car manufacturers – the change from a seller's to a buyer's market, appreciation of the German mark which undermines exports, the oil crises coupled with higher inflation and greater frugality of consumers and the emergence of new competitors – lead companies to refocus from production to the demands of the consumer. While he highlights the role of Ford in responding most rapidly to these problems, he does not address whether the multinational was potentially transferring American knowledge to the German market. Similarly, Paul Erker illustrates that a marketing revolution in transport and logistics happened much later, because the market remained highly regulated until the 1980s. Both Paul Erker and Uwe Spiekermann in their contribution, present comparisons of two different sectors or companies (the tire manufacturer Continental and the logistics company Dachser, and agriculture and trade, respectively). In both cases, however, it remains unclear why these examples were chosen for comparison, as both seem to have little in common and are not always effectively used to demonstrate differences. The weakest section of the book is the development of marketing as an academic discipline. The attempt at sketching the phases in the evolution of marketing as an academic discipline by Ursula Hansen and Matthias Bode opens with an undergraduate-level explanation on the methodology of historical periodisation that seems extraneous. Considerably stronger is the section on the wider societal impact of marketing, and Anja Kruke shows how the new techniques of opinion research was accepted by politics and business – surprisingly more readily by politicians than their commercial counterparts. In terms of contemporary personalities, Hans Domizlaff emerges as one fascinating figure of German marketing history, which several contributors refer to and whose career as the German cigarette manufacturer Reemtsma is critically analysed by Tino Jacobs. Domizlaff was Germany's own ‘marketing guru’, whose successful campaigns led to the wide-ranging reception of his ideas about the nature of good branding and marketing. These are variously described as intuitive, elitist, and sachlich, a German concept of a sober, fact-based, and ‘no frills’ approach. Domizlaff did not believe in market research. Rather, he saw the genius of the individual advertiser as key to intuitively ascertaining the people's moods, wishes, and desires. This seems to have made him peculiarly suited to the tastes of the German middle class, according to Thomas Mergel's contribution on the nature of political marketing in the republic. Especially in politics, any form of hard sales tactics were severely frowned upon and considered to demean the citizen as incapable of making an informed choice, a mentality that he dates back to the traditions of nineteenth-century liberalism. Part of this disdain of ‘selling politics like toothpaste’ was also founded on the highly effective use of branding by the National Socialists, who identified their party through the use of an increasingly standardised image of Adolf Hitler and the swastika. Alexander Schug extends on previous research that criticised the simplistic notion of Hitler's charisma as the only explanation of the popular success and distances his approach from those who see it in terms of propaganda and demagogy. He argues that the NSDAP used the tools of advertising and branding precisely because they had to introduce their new ideology into a political marketplace dominated by more established parties. In this they were undoubtedly successful, more so than they intended: as bakers sold swastika cookies and butchers formed Führer heads out of lard, the NSDAP sought to regain control over the now effectively iconic images that constituted their brand, which was in danger of being trivialised and devalued. Key to understanding the history of marketing in Germany is on the one hand the exchange of ideas with the United States, and on the other the impact of national-socialist policies, and the question whether they were a force of modernisation or retardation. The general argument in the volume appears to favour the latter explanation. In the 1930s, some of the leading marketing experts emigrated to the USA, leaving German academia and business isolated. The aftermath of the Second World War left a country that needed to increase production to satisfy consumer demand, and there was little interest in advanced sales techniques. Although the Nazis were progressive in applying new marketing methods to their political campaign, this retarded the adoption of sales techniques in politics for a long time. Germany saw the development of idiosyncratic approaches by people like Domizlaff in the 1930s and 1940s, when it lost some leading thinkers, and only engaged with American marketing conceptions in the 1960s and 1970s, when consumers eventually became more important than producers.
