In health promotion, enthusiasm for sustainability has frequently overshadowed critical reflection with regard to whether this aim is warranted, let alone feasible. Consequently, the not insubstantial body of literature on sustainability in health promotion is not particularly helpful to decision makers. In this paper we seek to provide some guidance for the development of sustainability for health promotion interventions, arguing that it is necessary to be able to differentiate between (i) levels of social organization which are the focus of change, (ii) the programmes and agencies which are the means employed to achieve change, and (iii) the outcomes or effects that are achieved. Furthermore, funding allocations need to be congruent with programme characteristics if one is serious about achieving sustainability.

This paper presents a new measure of sustainability within a welfare economics framework. Gross domestic product (GDP) can be used as an indicator of sustainability if the GDP estimates are undertaken within a cost-benefit analysis framework based on social choice perspectives. Sustainability is dependent on a healthy and functioning socio-economic and environmental (SEE) system. Economic development can damage the SEE system through resource degradation, over-harvesting and pollution. This paper addresses the tensions between economic development and sustainability by undertaking a number of SEE-based adjustments to GDP based on social choice perspectives in order to measure sustainability. These adjustments include the environmental and social costs caused by economic development such as water pollution, the depletion of non-renewable resources, and deforestation. Thailand is used as a case study for a 25 year period (1975-1999). The results show a divergence in terms of GDP per capita and the SEE-adjusted GDP per capita figure. The paper concludes that, with increasing environmental and social costs of economic development, pursuing such extreme high growth objectives without due environmental and social considerations can threaten present social welfare and future sustainability. The contextual nature of sustainability makes it extremely difficult to measure. Across the world each region has a specific environment and history that has shaped values and perceptions of the local community. In response, a wide range of tools has been developed that employ differing techniques to measure sustainability. These have a range of applications from global to site-specific scales. However, it is yet to be resolved whether assessments made using these tools reflect a technical focus with no close links to the knowledge and perceptions of stakeholders, community and management decisions, or whether the assessments reflect the knowledge and perceptions of local stakeholders and the community. In the southwest region of Victoria, Australia, a sustainability index called AIRS (An Index of Regional Sustainability) has recently been developed. This tool is based on indicators selected by stakeholders and considers relationships between the indicators. The aim of this paper is to report an ex-post evaluation of the AIRS sustainability assessment conducted at a subcatchment scale. The evaluation assesses AIRS's ability to assess regional sustainability and compares and contrasts the subcatchment assessments with the knowledge and perceptions of stakeholders and the community. A participatory approach that acknowledges key stakeholders was used for the evaluation process. Representatives from four stakeholder groups were interviewed to elicit their views of the AIRS assessment, its relevance, quality, applicability and priorities for future development. Strengths and weaknesses of AIRS are revealed and its contribution to social learning is highlighted.

The complex interconnection among issues affecting rural-regional sustainability requires an equally complex program of research to ensure the attraction and retention of high-quality teachers for rural children. The educational effects of the construction of the rural within a deficit discourse are highlighted. A concept of rural social space is modelled, bringing together social, economic and environmental dimensions of (rural-regional) sustainability. This framework combines quantitive definitional processes with more situated definitions of rural space based on demographic and other social data, across both geographic and cultural formations. The implications of the model are examined in terms of its importance for teacher education.

This article discusses a major dilemma faced by social marketers: the conflict between implementing social marketing programs aimed at developing material wellbeing and the increased use of resources as a result of these changes. Social marketers aim to make social changes positively however the social‐environmental cost benefit is seldom a consideration. It is suggested that many changes are ‘unsustainable’ in their current format. Social marketers will need to become involved in the tradeoffs between material wellbeing and sustainability of the environment. This important issue is of direct relevance to a large section of those involved in social change creation. The consideration of sustainability is an important issue for social marketers. Implications and further research are proposed.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo fornecer uma análise detalhada do cenário da sustentabilidade ambiental e iniciativas de responsabilidade social corporativa nas empresas que operam no mercado de bens de consumo brasileiro. Para alcançar este objetivo as dez maiores empresas do mercado-alvo presente no Brasil foram analisadas por meio da classificação das suas iniciativas em três perspectivas amplas. Com esta classificação o cenário do mercado pode ser visto. As perspectivas utilizadas para a elaboração do trabalho são: (1) iniciativa ambiental ou social; (2) o foco interno ou externo e (3) a marca ou o custo como motivador. Depois de classificar todas as iniciativas, foi possível ver que as empresas similares, que operam em mercados semelhantes, têm estratégias que são muito parecidos entre si. Além disso, ficou claro que a estratégia de negócios da empresa influencia as suas políticas ambientais e sociais, em particular os objetivos que estas políticas procuram obter.Embora este trabalho apresente um panorama abrangente do setor de bens de consumo em relação a políticas de comportamento responsável das empresas, ele tem algumas limitações. A limitação mais significativa diz respeito a metodologia. As iniciativas foram avaliadas pela quantidade e a abrangência dos benefícios do impacto positivo não foram avaliados, impossibilitando assim a comparação do tamanho do impacto de cada empresa. Uma vez que pode haver um projeto de uma empresa que tem maior impacto do que vários outros feitos por alguma outra empresa. A metodologia foi baseada em clusters de categorias, no entanto, as iniciativas não são completamente uma coisa ou outra, ou seja, uma iniciativa pode ter diferentes impactos, drivers ou foco, nesses casos, os aspectos mais relevantes foram a escolhidos para classificá-los.
