This review discusses the present state of the art of the stereochemistry of electrochemical reactions. The extent of asymmetric induction is progressing, but in general diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities remain behind those from chemical synthesis. In recent years, new methodological developments have been successful. Effects that play important roles in homogeneous chemistry have been used with success. Lack of expressive enantiomeric excess (ee) could be related to the absence of tightly organized structures during the reaction of interest. The highest ee might be expected for redox reactions where conformational preference in transition state plays the important role or for the ones performed while adsorbed on the electrode, and where the chiral element is also at the surface, either adsorbed or chemically bound to the surface and interacting directly with the substrate. Electroenzymatic synthesis has a promising future.

The hydrocarbonylation reaction of ethanol with a CO/H2 mixture assisted by Ru(acac)3/iodide was investigated. Bronsted and Lewis acids and iodides salt were used as homogeneous promoters. The etherification reaction was the main reaction under typical acidic conditions of the catalytic system. When a hydrocarbon solvent (toluene) was added to the initial reaction, the alcohol conversion and the carbonylation products were increased. The catalytic activity of the Bronsted acids (conv. EtOH = 71-92%) was higher than that of the Lewis acids promoters (conv. EtOH = 65-85%). The salt present the lower catalytic activity among the promoters used. The long time reaction carried out with ethanol showed an increase of the product selectivity of the homologation and carbonylation reactions while the etherification reaction selectivity decreased. The recycled ether led to 60-65% ethanol conversion to C5 and C6 products. The main catalytic species are H+[Ru(CO)3I3]-, [HRu3(CO)11]- and [HRu(CO)4]-. The first one is active in the carbonylation and homologation reactions of alcohols while the two others take part only in the homologation reaction.

The experimental results for the 2-propanolysis of benzoyl, benzyl, benzene sulphenyl and benzene sulphonyl chlorides obtained by conductimetric technique were compared with estimates for chlorobenzene which is extremely unreactive as an electrophile. We thus obtained the following reactivity sequence: PhSCl>PhCOCl>PhSO2Cl>PhCH2 Cl>PhCl with rate-coefficiente ratios (in the same order): 9.5 x 10(4) : 1: 7.14 x 10-2 : 4.7 x 10-3 : about 10-26. We have discussed these results in specific terms and with the aid of general conclusions which stem from our own classification of electrophiles.

This review gives a critical idea on the importance of intramolecular reactions as models for enzymatic catalysis. Intramolecular lactonizations, ester and amide hydrolysis studies result in theories which try to explain the difference between intermolecular, intramolecular and enzyme reactions and rationalize the enhancement promoted by these biological catalyst.

The strong reducing action of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are of fundamental interest in biochemical and related process. The oxidation of ascorbic acid by molecular oxygen and others oxidants are of fundamental importance, involving the intervention of transition metal ions as catalysts and the formation transition metal complexes of ascorbic acid as intermediates. The present article is intended to cover some aspects of the reactions of ascorbic acid and related compounds involving some transition metal ions.

Cp'Mn(CO)3 (Cp'=h5-C5H4-CH 3) reacts with P(C6H5)2H in THF to give Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2H (Ph = Phenyl) (1), by substitution of one CO ligand. The reaction of 1 with CH3COCl and CH3S(O)2Cl in the presence of triethylamine occurs under electrophilic substitution on the diphenylphosphan ligand to yield the acetyl- and sulfonylphosphane complexes of manganese(I) Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2COCH3 (2) and Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2S(O)2 CH3 (3). The complex stabilisation of these molecules, wich are hitherto unknown in the free state, is only accomplished by blocking the free electron pair on phosphorus by coordination. The new complexes 1, 2 and 3 were analysed by IR, ¹H-NMR and 31P-MNR spectroscopy and their similar structures are discusssed.

gamma-Hydroxy-alpha-diazo-beta-ketoesters are key intermediates in the chemistry of penicilin-based antibiotics and natural products. The method developed here for the synthesis of ethyl 2-diazo-4-hydroxy-3-oxo-butanoate 17 (in two steps from the diazo mercurial 2) compares very favorably with those reported in the literature for similar compounds. The Rh2(OAc)4-mediated intramolecular OH-insertion reaction of the diazo hydroxy ester 17 was investigated, furnishing the oxetan-3-one-2-carboxilate 18 in good yield. When the diazo ester lacks a free hydroxyl group as in the case of the phenoxy diazo ester 11 an intramolecular CH-insertion takes place, affording the 2H-chromene 20 in almost quantitative yield. The behavior of other functionalized diazo esters towards Rh2(OAc)4 was also investigated.

This article summarizes how chiral 2-oxazolines have been employed as inducers of asymmetry in many kinds of organic reactions, including the more recent examples reported in which chiral bis(oxazolines) have been complexed in situ with transition metals and utilized to induce the stereoselectivity of some reactions.

Unusual chemical phenomenon associated with ultrasound is on account of cavitation effect. The ultrasound increase the rate and yield of chemical reaction on account of its ability to emulsify liquids. When the ultrasound is used in metallic catalyst reaction the activity of catalyst is increased because the ultrasound clean the surface of catalyst. Sonogels have a fine porosity and large specific surface improving different properties. This paper deals with ultrasound phenomenon and gives some examples of reactions and properties where this radiation takes an important role.

Polyaddition of commercial monomers is easily performed on a domestic microwave oven. The rate of polymerization depends on the structure of the monomer, power and time of irradiation. This methodology can easily be used to demonstrate the acceleration of organic reactions promoted by microwaves.

Biogenic emissions of volatile organic compounds play a fundamental role in the atmospheric chemistry, vegetation being one of their major sources. Amongst the VOCs emitted by plants, olefins and terpenoids are the most abundant. These compounds, due to the presence of two or more double bonds and other structural features, are very reactive in the atmosphere and act as precursors of the photochemical smog and aerosols. This article presents a review of the reactions of olefins and terpenoids with ozone, in the gas phase, with emphasis toward the mechanisms and kinetic aspects.

Chalcone (1) and its fluorinated derivatives 2-4, as well as their cyclic analogues 5-10, were synthesized through an aldol condensation reaction between the corresponding ketone and aldehyde. These compounds were characterized by IR, EIMS and ¹H and 13C NMR spectral data. Modern NMR techniques allowed us to conclude that the compounds obtained show E configuration. These techniques were also employed to investigate the equilibrium involving the s-cis and s-trans conformations of 1-4, with this equilibrium being dependent on the fluorine substitution on both aromatic rings, A or B. IR studies indicated that the yield of the s-cis conformation in the fluorinated derivatives is 57.4±1.4; 88.1±0.4 and 66.4±0.7%, for 2, 3 and 4, respectively, based on previous ¹H NMR calculations for chalcone. Theoretical calculations, using the MMX method, were employed to justify the variation of chemical shifts for the fluorinated derivatives and cyclic analogues. These chemical shifts are consequence of the anisotropic effect showed by the carbonyl group on these compounds.

A review on the electrophilic addition of iodine to alkenes in the presence of oxygen containing nucleophiles (cohalogenation reaction) is presented. The intermolecular reactions are discussed with emphasis in methods of reaction and synthetic applications of the resulting vicinal iodo-functionalized products (iodohydrins, beta-iodoethers and beta-iodocarboxylates).
