In Vivo Comparison of Hard Tissue Regeneration with Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Processed with Either the FICOLL Method or the BMAC Method

Objective: To compare new bone formation in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures using biomaterial associated with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) separated by two different isolation methods. Background: In regenerative medicine open cell concentration systems are only allowed for clinical application under good manufacturing practice conditions. Methods: Mononuclear cells, including MSCs, were concentrated with either the synthetic poylsaccharid (FICOLL) method (classic open system-control group, n = 6 sinus) or the bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) method (closed system-test group, n = 12 sinus) and transplanted in combination with biomaterial. A sample of the cells was characterized by their ability to differentiate. After 4.1 months (SD +/- 1.0) bone biopsies were obtained and analyzed. Results: The new bone formation in the BMAC group was 19.9% (90% confidence interval [CI], 10.9-29), and in the FICOLL group was 15.5% (90% CI, 8.6-22.4). The 4.4% difference was not significant (90% CI, -4.6-13.5; p = 0.39). MSCs could be differentiated into osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic lineages. Conclusion: MSCs harvested from bone marrow aspirate in combination with bovine bone matrix particles can form lamellar bone and provide a reliable base for dental implants. The closed BMAC system is suited to substitute the open FICOLL system in bone regeneration procedures.

Sr-Nd isotopic evidence for crustal contamination in the Niquelandia complex, Goias, Central Brazil

The Niquelandia complex is a Neoproterozoic mafic-ultramafic intrusion resulting from fractional crystallization of primary picritic basalt intrusions. It consists of two layered sequences: a lower and larger one (LS), where four stratigraphic units exhibit an upward decrease of ultramafic layers and increase of gabbroic layers; an upper, smaller sequence (US), separated from LS by a high-temperature shear zone and consisting of two stratigraphic units (gabbros + anorthosites and amphibolites). Nd and Sr isotopic analyses and rare earth element (REE) profiles provide evidence that the complex suffered important crustal contamination. The LS isotopic array trends from a DM region with positive epsilon Nd and moderately positive epsilon Sr towards a field occupied by crustal xenoliths, especially abundant in the upper LS (negative epsilon Nd and large, positive E:Sr). Each LS stratigraphic unit is distinct from the next underlying unit, showing lower epsilon Nd and higher epsilon Sr, suggesting inputs of fresh magma and mixing with the contaminated, residual magma. The US is characterised by a relatively high variation of epsilon Nd and constant epsilon Sr. REE patterns vary within each unit from LREE depleted to LREE enriched in the samples having lower epsilon Nd and higher epsilon Sr. The contamination process has been modelled by using the EC-AFC algorithms from [Spera, F.J., Bohrson, W.A., 2001. Energy-constrained open-system magmatic processes 1: general model and energy-constrained assimilation and fractional crystallization (EC-AFC) formulation. J. Petrology 42, 999-1018]. The differences between the LS and US isotopic arrays are consistent with contamination by the same crustal component, provided that its melting degree was higher in LS than in US. The different degrees of anatexis are explained by the heat budget released from the magma, higher in LS (because of its larger mass) than in US. Comparison of the correlations between isotopes and incompatible trace element ratios of the models and of the gabbros shows some differences, which are demonstrably related with the variable amount of cumulus phases and trapped melt in the gabbros. Evidence Algorithm and Processing Formalized Mathematical Texts

The goal of a research programme Evidence Algorithm is a development of an open system of automated proving that is able to accumulate mathematical knowledge and to prove theorems in a context of a self-contained mathematical text. By now, the first version of such a system called a System for Automated Deduction, SAD, is implemented in software. The system SAD possesses the following main features: mathematical texts are formalized using a specific formal language that is close to a natural language of mathematical publications; a proof search is based on special sequent-type calculi formalizing natural reasoning style, such as application of definitions and auxiliary propositions. These calculi also admit a separation of equality handling from deduction that gives an opportunity to integrate logical reasoning with symbolic calculation.

The biotechnology and marketing interface : functional integration using mechanistic and holographic responses to environmental turbulence

This paper serves to specify and ground research into interfunctional integration in a wider theoretical context with particular reference to the interaction between technology and marketing in the biotechnology sphere. The general and specific problem areas are specified as those of interfunctional relations and the dyadic relationship between marketing and biotechnical managerial functions in particular. The contextual/organisational generative mechanisms that are likely to keep interfunctional relations at the centre of scholarly attention for some time are explored from the perspective of cybernetic theory. The law of requisite variety states that in an effective open system environmental variety is matched by internal structural variety. As organisations are faced with ever more turbulent, and complex environments, this must be matched by an increased internal complexity within the organisation. The two modes of response, namely holographic and mechanistic, both highlight the need to further our understanding of interfunctional differences. Having established the problem and its genesis, a specific research agenda is outlined as the exploration of the interfunctional differences from a decision-making perspective.

O paradigma frankfurteano: uma alternativa para a psicologia organizacional

O objetivo do presente trabalho e o de propor um modelo teórico de atuação para a Psicologia Organizacional calcado nos seguintes fundamentos: a visão dialética da interação indivíduo/organização proporcionada pela reavaliação do conceito de inclusão parcial nos papéis de Floyd Allport; a recuperação da memória dos acontecimentos passados que influenciam a dinâmica a teoria da competência comunicativa de Juergen Habermas e o método dos grupos operativos de Pichon Riviere. A trajetória percorrida para a concretização deste propósito partiu dos pressupostos de Kuhn, através da formulação de uma hipótese inicial de que os problemas enfrentados pela Psicologia Organizacional decorrem de crenças que orientam a produção de conhecimentos na área. Com a finalidade de comprovar-se a afirmação anterior estabeleceu-se uma análise das diversas correntes responsáveis pelas principais contribuições teóricas no campo categorizando-as nos seguintes paradigmas: burocrático, sistema aberto, relações humanas, humanista e da contingência e indicando-se, simultaneamente, os obstáculos epistemológicos apresentados pelos respectivos paradigmas. A seguir buscou-se, nas contribuições dos teóricos ligados ao movimento filosófico - denominado Escola de Frankfurt - aquelas julgadas as mais significativas à compreensão dos fenômenos, objeto da Psicologia Organizacional. Estas contribuições constituiram-se, assim, em sustentação para o modelo proposto. Como consequência da adoção do paradigma frankfurteano obteve-se uma reorientação no campo e no objeto da Psicologia Organizacional, permitindo-se, também, vislumbrar com maior clareza uma articulação com os campos de atuação da Psicologia do Trabalho e da Psicologia Institucional.

Low cost non-intrusive home energy monitoring

This thesis presents a low cost non-intrusive home energy monitor built on top of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) concepts and techniques. NILM solutions are already considered low cost alternatives to the big majority of existing commercial energy monitors but the goal here is to make its cost even lower by using a mini netbook as a whole in one solution. The mini netbook is installed in the homes main circuit breaker and computes power consumption by reading current and voltage from the built-in sound card. At the same time, feedback to the users is provided using the 11’’ LCD screen as well as other built-in I/O modules. Our meter is also capable of detecting changes in power and tries to find out which appliance lead to that change and it is being used as part of an eco-feedback platform that was build to study the long terms of energy eco-feedback in individuals. In this thesis the steps that were taken to come up with such a system are presented, from the basics of AC power measurements to the implementation of an event detector and classifier that was used to disaggregate the power load. In the last chapter results from some validation tests that have been performed are presented in order to validate the experiment. It is believed that such a system will not only be important as an energy monitor, but also as an open system than can be easily changed to accommodate and test new or existing nonintrusive load monitoring techniques.

Comportamento do meloeiro em cultivo sem solo com a utilização de biofertilizante

O reaproveitamento de nutrientes após a fermentação de resíduos orgânicos em biodigestor, associado à técnica do cultivo hidropônico, é uma alternativa para reduzir custos na agricultura, além de contribuir no menor consumo das reservas naturais de nutrientes do planeta. Com esse enfoque, estudou-se o comportamento da cultura do meloeiro usando a técnica hidropônica e efluente de biodigestor proveniente da fermentação anaeróbica de estrume bovino. Cultivou-se o meloeiro (Cucumis melo L. 'Bônus 2') em condições de ambiente protegido. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com 4 tratamentos (cultivo hidropônico em sistema fechado tipo NFT com uso de solução nutritiva organo-mineral; cultivo hidropônico em sistema fechado tipo NFT com uso de solução nutritiva 100% mineral; cultivo em sistema aberto, com substrato e solução nutritiva organo-mineral e cultivo em sistema aberto, com substrato e solução nutritiva 100% mineral) e 6 repetições. Foram realizadas avaliações quanto a altura de plantas aos 50; 56; 63; 70 e 77 dias após a semeadura; tempo de colheita; peso de frutos e produtividade. As melhores respostas foram observadas no cultivo hidropônico em sistema fechado tipo NFT com uso de solução nutritiva 100% mineral. A substituição parcial de adubos minerais por biofertilizante, se mostrou viável para os tratamentos em sistema aberto (com substrato), constituindo-se em masi uma alternativa aos horticultores.

Implications of groundwater weathered profile interactions to the mobilization of radionuclides

This study reports the nature and extent of open-system interaction between groundwater and a weathered profile developed in the high grade thorium and REE ore body in Morro do Ferro, Pocos de Caldas plateau. The radioelement mobility in the shallow oxidizing environment was considered by using chemical data in conjunction with U-234/U-238, Ra-226/Th-230, Th-230/U-234, Th-228/Th-232, Ra-228/Th-232 and Th-230/Ra-228 activity ratios (AR's) for borehole spoil and groundwater samples.Recharging groundwater from the studied borehole has low salinity values, with total dissolved solids content of 14.7 mg/l and total ionic strength of 0.00018. The ratio of the weight of dissolved radioelement per unit volume of solution to the weight of radioelement in solid phase per unit weight of solid phase showed that the radioelement solubility in the studied waters varied according to the following order: radium> uranium >thorium.U-234/U-238 AR's less than 1 were measured in solid phase and can justify the enhancement of U-234 in solution. Ra-226/Th-230 AR's greater than 1 and Th-230/U-234 AR'S less than 1 were evaluated between 20 and 27 m in depth, where a 2.1-m thick magnetite dike was intersected. These ratios could be justified by deposition of U and Ra associated with Fe-Mn oxides and kaolinite, where mineral saturation indices evaluated from the available data confirm this possibility. Covariations among disequilibria involving Th-228/(228) Ra and Ra-228/Th-232 AR's showed the preferential removal of Ra-228 relative to Tn isotopes, Th-228 and Th-232. Neostructuralism and heterodox thinking in Latin America and the Caribbean in the early twenty-first century

The thinking that has unilaterally dominated economic science for over five decades has recently come under intensive scrutiny and its validity and conceptual and empirical coherence are the subject of controversy. Thus the limitations of the prevailing paradigm for addressing the failures of free market economies have been laid bare. For Latin America and the Caribbean, these failures are structural in nature, as indeed structuralism proposed in its time. Neostructuralism delves more deeply into the issues addressed in structuralism, aiming to improve positioning in the international economy, boost productive employment creation, reduce structural heterogeneity and improve income distribution, while maintaining financial balances capable of sustaining changes in the sphere of production by means of social and State support. Far from being an insular system of thinking, neostructuralism is an open system that lends itself to dialogue with other philosophies that recognize the limitations of the dominant paradigm and object to its methodological monism. This book offers a fresh look at neostructuralism and heterodox thinking at the start of the twenty-first century. In a context shaped by the impacts of the worst economic and financial crisis since the Great Depression and by paradigmatic changes at the global level, it aims to carve out arenas for discussion between alternative lines of thinking in order to lay the foundations for a socioeconomically inclusive and environmentally sustainable model of development for the region.
