The regular practice of physical therapy is indicated as a non-pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer's disease by promoting cognitive, behavioral and functional benefits. However, little is known about the protocols with home-based motor intervention for this population. Thinking about it, this review aimed to investigate and analyze the protocols for home-based motor intervention for elderly with Alzheimer's disease described in scientific articles. A systematic search was performed in the following databases: Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus, using the following keywords and Boolean operators: home-based exercise OR home-based physical exercise OR home-based physical fitness OR home-based rehabilitation OR home-based physical therapy OR home-based physical activity OR home-based engine Intervention and AD OR Alzheimer's disease OR AlzheimerOR Alzheimer's dementia. We also conducted a manual search of reference lists of selected articles. Of the five articles that met the inclusion criteria adopted, three performed a protocol for home motor intervention, achieving good compliance with the program, improvement of general health and reduction of depressive symptoms. The other two studies were limited to describing the protocols. Although more studies are needed, with detailed protocols, this review allowed to show that protocols for home motor intervention can also produce positive effects for both patients and caregivers.

Hypertension is a disease that affects a large part of the world population, in which the treatment consists in changing habits of life, which include diet, weight loss and smoking cessation, among others, attending the physical activity outstanding recommendations, supported by its positive effects on the maintenance of blood pressure levels within the limits of normality. Objective: To characterize the post-exercise hypotensive response on individuals with hypertension. Method: Literature review from 1990 to 2011, searching the electronic databases MEDLINE, ScIELO, Lilacs and Cochrane. Articles were selected using keywords hypertension, physical exercise and high blood pressure. Results: One session of physical activity promotes the reduction of arterial hypertension, which is called post-exercise hypotension. However, this phenomenon will depend on some related factors such as the type, intensity and duration of exercise. Conclusion: The performance of activity and/or physical exercise is important in non-pharmacological treatment for lowering blood pressure, but is not yet defined the best type of exercise.

Disorders in gait are identified in Parkinson’s disease patients. As a result, the capacity of walking independently and the interaction with the environment can be impairment. So, the auditory cues have been utilized as a non-pharmacological treatment to improve the locomotor impairment of the PD patients. However, these effects were observed in the regular lands and it’s not known the effects of auditory cues in gait during avoidance obstacles that could be more threaten for these patients. Yet, few studies in the literature compare the Parkinson’s disease patients with the older adults during the locomotor tasks and obstacle avoidance in association with the effects of auditory cues. The aim of the study is to compare the effects of the auditory cues in the gait and during obstacle avoidance in PD patients and older adults. 30 subjects distributed in two groups (Group 1 - 15, Parkinson’s disease patients; Group 2 - 15, healthy older adults) are going to participate of this study. After the participation approval, the assessment of clinical condition will be done by a physician. So, to investigate the locomotor pattern, it will be done a kinematic analysis. The experimental task is to walk on 8 m pathway and 18 trials will be done (6 for the free gait and 12 for adaptive gait). For the adaptive gait, two different obstacle heights will be manipulated: high obstacle (HO) and low obstacle (LO). In order to verify possible differences between the groups and the experimental condition, multivariance tests will be used with a significance level of 0.05. MANOVA revealed effect of condition and task. Thus, with DA, we observed an increase in cadence and reduced single support and stride length. Lasertherapy is a method of non-pharmacological treatment and surgery that can be used in several injuries and in various tissues, from bone fractures to tendonitis, skin wounds and damaged nerves, permitting the recovery of these structures and their functions without causing any side effects. Laser therapy aims to restore patients that suffered various injuries, such as bone fracture, inflammation, edema, tendon rupture, spinal cord injury, among others, without invasive intervention, and the results obtained in several studies and case reports have proven the high potential of this therapy to become an official treatment of various pathological changes

Immunosuppressive drugs have a critical role in inhibiting tissue damage and allograft rejection.Studies have demonstrated the anti-infl ammatory effects of the annexin A1 (AnxA1) in the regulationof transmigration and apoptosis of leucocytes. In the present study, an experimental skin allograftmodel was used to evaluate a potential protective effect of AnxA1 in transplantation survival. Micewere used for the skin allograft model and pharmacological treatments were carried out using eitherthe AnxA1 mimetic peptide Ac2-26, with or without cyclosporine A (CsA), starting 3 days beforesurgery until rejection. Graft survival, skin histopathology, leucocyte transmigration and expressionof AnxA1 and AnxA5 post-transplantation were analysed. Pharmacological treatment with Ac2-26increased skin allograft survival related with inhibition of neutrophil transmigration and inductionof apoptos is, thereby reducing the tissue damage compared with control animals. Moreover, AnxA1and AnxA5 expression increased after Ac2-26 treatment in neutrophils. Interestingly, thecombination of Ac2-26 and cyclosporine A showed similar survival of transplants when compared withthe cyclosporine A group, which could be attributed to a synergistic effect of both drugs. Investigationsin vitro revealed that cyclosporine A inhibited extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphory-lation induced by Ac2-26 in neutrophils. Overall, the results suggest that AnxA1 has an essential role inaugmenting the survival of skin allograft, mainly owing to inhibition of neutrophil transmigration andenhancement of apoptosis. This effect may lead to the development of new therapeutic approachesrelevant to transplant rejection.

The discovery of neurogenesis in adult brains opened the possibility of cellular therapy strategies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Neurogenesis in the adult brain occurs in two areas: subgranular zone of the hippocampus and subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles. Neurons that originate from the SVZ migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) through the rostral migratory stream (RMS). In Alzheimer’s disease, there is a progressive neuronal dysfunction and degeneration, resulting in brain atrophy and cognitive impairments including olfactory dysfunction. Several studies have demonstrated that pharmacological treatment with lithium exerts positive effects on adult neurogenesis, and one pathway seems to be the modulation of factors that regulate the migration of neuroblasts. The objective of this study was to investigate whether treatment with lithium promotes the increase of migratory neuroblasts using as parameter the RMS. Adult male C57BL/6 mice were divided into control and lithium-treated groups. The animals were treated for 6 weeks and, at four different time points, i.e., 10 days, 7 days, 3 days and 1 day before the end of treatments, they received an injection of BrdU (cell proliferation marker). The animals were sacrificed by perfusion fixation and the brains were immunohistochemically labeled for BrdU for analysis of migrating neuroblasts in the RMS. The results showed that the number of BrdU+ cells in the RMS was not significantly different between the two groups, suggesting that lithium, alone, is not capable of increasing the number of neuroblasts migrating from the SVZ to the OB

Aerobic exercise has been suggested as a non-pharmacological treatment for hypertension, and the previous paper of this set demonstrated some of the physiological responses induced by exercise. It has been shown an increment on expenditures for appropriate hypertension management in both, public and private services, which reinforces the inclusion of preventive programs to reduce healthcare costs. However, little is known about physical exercise cost-effectiveness for hypertensive patients. There are several interventions like a simple doctor/dietitian counselling in order to change life style, wed-based nutrition program, pharmacological treatment and assisted or non-assisted physical exercise program that evaluate the costs savings. We have shown that regular exercise (combined or not with another diet counselling and antihypertensive treatment) may effectively contribute to reduce the health care costs (up to -38%). Also, we have shown that exercise improves body composition and lipid profile which are important risk factors to development of cardiovascular disease. So, exercise can lead to significant reduction in blood pressure medication use and, therefore, it causes cost savings, justifying the implementation of exercise programs in all healthcare units.

To discuss the role of physical exercise in the attenuation of cancer cachexia-associated symptoms, and upon the outcome of chemotherapy, with special focus on the anti-inflammatory role of chronic exercise. The review addresses the recent findings regarding the positive effects of endurance and strength exercise training upon metabolic dysfunction, systemic inflammation and body composition alterations in the syndrome of cachexia. The employment of different exercise protocol strategies, in respect to intensity, duration, work load and in concomitance with pharmacological treatment is considered. Cachexia is a multifactorial wasting syndrome afflicting patients with cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic heart failure, trauma, among other diseases. This condition markedly compromises the quality of life, treatment outcome and survival. Recent literature indicates an unequivocal role of chronic exercise in modulating cachexia and other cancer-associated dysfunctions. Exercise is proposed as a complementary treatment in cancer, and represents a function-preserving, anti-inflammatory and metabolism-modulating strategy with low cost, and high versatility and availability. Furthermore, exercise decreases cancer recurrence and presents a positive impact on public health management, reducing hospitalization and medication costs.
