In this paper, a new method for designing three-zone optical pupil filter is presented. The phase-only optical pupil filter and the amplitude-only optical pupil filters were designed. The first kind of pupil for optical data storage can increase the transverse resolution. The second kind of pupil filter can increase the axial and transverse resolution at the same time, which is applicable in three-dimension imaging in confocal microscopy. (C) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. We have studied theoretically the inherent mechanisms of nonvolatile holographic storage in doubly doped LiNbO3 crystals. The photochromic effect of doubly doped LiNbO3 crystals is discussed, and the criterion for this effect is obtained through the photochromism-bleach factor a = S(21)gamma(1)/S(11)gamma(2) that we define. The two-center recording and fixing processes are analytically discussed with extended Kukhtarev equations, and analytical expressions for recorded and fixed steady-state space-charge fields as well as temporal behavior during the fixing process are obtained. The effects of microphysical quantities, the macrophotochromic effect on fixing efficiency, and recorded and fixed steady-state space-charge fields, are discussed analytically and numerically. Vectorial Kukhtarev equations modified for the nonvolatile holographic recording in doubly doped crystals are analyzed, in which the bulk photovoltaic effect and the external electrical field are both considered. On the basis of small modulation approximation, both the analytic solution to the space-charge field with time in the recording phase and in the readout phase are deduced. The analytic solutions can be easily simplified to adapt the one-center model, and they have the same analytic expressions given those when the grating vector is along the optical axis. Based on the vectorial analyses of the band transport model an optimal recording direction is given to maximize the refractive index change in doubly doped LiNbO3:Fe: Mn crystals. The optical constants of two cyanine dye films that we prepared were measured with a RAP-1-type (RAP is rotating analyzer and polarizer) spectroscopic ellipsometer. Toward making a simplified model for the wafers of a recordable compact disk (CD-R), we give their optimization designs developed with the cyanine dye films. in addition, the dynamic storage performances of two sample disks were tested by our dynamic storage testing system. Measurement results of the sample disks were obtained to test and verify our film designs. (C) 2000 Optical Society of America. OCIS codes: 160.4890, 160.4760, 210.4810.

The axial intensity distribution and focal depth of an apoclized focusing optical system are theoretically investigated with two kinds of incident light fields: a uniform-intensity-distribution beam and a Gaussian beam. Both a low-numerical-aperture and a high-numerical-aperture optical system are considered. Numerical results show that the depth of focus can be adjusted by changing the geometrical parameters and transmissivity of the apodizer in the focusing optical system. When a Gaussian beam is employed as the incident beam, the waist width also affects the depth of focus. The tunable range of the focal depth is very considerable. The demand for high-speed optical links within local-area networks and storage-area networks continues to grow rapidly, with standards under development that demand single-wavelength solutions at data rates of 30 Gb/s and beyond. Robust low-cost schemes are required, with a particular emphasis on multimode-fibre links using optical transceivers based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. © 2012 IEEE.

Low-cost optical switches based on SLMs have conventionally been considered unsuitable for packet switching due to slow reconfiguration time. In this paper, we demonstrate that the constraint of SLM reconfiguration time in a hybrid three-stage electronic/optical switching node architecture can be compensated through the utilization of MPLS label switching mechanism to achieve the best performance for SAN applications. © 2012 SEE.

The response of photonic memory effect in I-V characteristics of a specially designed photonic memory cell was reported. When the cell is biased in a storage mode, the optical excitation with the photon's energy larger than the energy gap gives rise to a step-like jump in the current. A set-up was used to measure the transient photocurrent at the biases where the step-like jump showed up. It is proved that the falling transient edge of the photocurrent, as the photoexcitation turns off, mainly maps the decaying of electrons and holes, which were previously stored in the cell during the illumination. Its time constant is a measure of photonic memory time.

A near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) system employing a very-small-aperture laser (VSAL) as an active probe is reported in this Letter. The VSAL in our experiment has an aperture size of 300 nmx300 nm and a near-field spot size of about 600 nm. The resolution of the NSOM system with the VSAL can reach about 600 nm, and even 400 nm. Considering the high output power of the VSAL, such a NSOM system is a potentially useful tool for nanodetection, data storage, nanolithography, and nanobiology.

A bisfurylfulgide, E, E-3,4-bis[1-(2,5-dimethyl-3-furyl)ethylidene]-3,4-dihydrofuran-2,5-dione, is synthesized by Stobbe condensation reaction. The molecular structure of target compound is confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis. It shows that the distances between two possible reaction sites of molecule are 0.3394 and 0.3406 nm respectively, which is favorable to photocyclization. The photochromic properties of this compound in different solvents are investigated, and the result shows that the compound exhibits excellent photochromic behavior. The primary result of applied research on parallel image storage is also presented.

Recording with both parallel and orthogonal linearly polarized lights, polarization holographic storage in genetic mutant BR-D96N film is reported with both transmission type geometry and reflection type geometry. Polarization properties of diffraction light and scattering light are discussed for two different cases, parallel polarization recording and orthogonal polarization recording. It shows that, compared with recording with parallel polarization lights, orthogonal polarization holography can separate the diffraction light from the scattering noise, therefore improving the signal-to-noise ratio. It also shows that, compared with reconstruction with reference light, reconstruction with phase conjugated wave of the reference light can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed diffraction image, and also the wave-front aberration of the object light introduced by irregular phase object in the optical pass-way can also be corrected effectively, which ensures that the reconstructed diffraction image has a better fidelity. The preliminary angle-multiplexed volume holographic storage multiplexed by transmission type geometry and reflection type geometry is demonstrated in the BR-D96N film. Experiment shows that there is no cross-talk between the two pages of images except for some scattering noises.

This paper presents an introduction to the application of ion traps and storage devices for cluster physics. Some experiments involving cluster ions in trapping devices such as Penning traps, Paul traps, quadrupole or multipole linear traps are briefly discussed. Electrostatic ion storage rings and traps which allow for the storage of fast ion beams without mass limitation are presented as well. We also report on the recently developed mini-ring, a compact electrostatic ion storage ring for cluster, molecular and biomolecular ion studies.

Poly(L-lactide) (PLA)/silica (SiO2) nanocomposites containing 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 Wt % SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by melt compounding in a Haake mixer. The phase morphology, thermomechanical properties, and optical transparency were investigated and compared to those of neat PLA. Scanning electron microscopy results show that the SiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the PLA matrix for filler contents below 5 wt %, whereas some aggregates were detected with further increasing filler concentration. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that the addition Of SiO2 nanoparticles not only remarkably accelerated the crystallization speed but also largely improved the crystallinity of PLA. An initial increase followed by a decrease with higher filler loadings for the storage modulus and glass-transition temperature were observed according to dynamic mechanical analysis results. Hydrogen bonding interaction involving C=O of PLA with Si-OH Of SiO2 was evidenced by Fourier transform infrared analysis for the first time.

A fundamental understanding of the information carrying capacity of optical channels requires the signal and physical channel to be modeled quantum mechanically. This thesis considers the problems of distributing multi-party quantum entanglement to distant users in a quantum communication system and determining the ability of quantum optical channels to reliably transmit information. A recent proposal for a quantum communication architecture that realizes long-distance, high-fidelity qubit teleportation is reviewed. Previous work on this communication architecture is extended in two primary ways. First, models are developed for assessing the effects of amplitude, phase, and frequency errors in the entanglement source of polarization-entangled photons, as well as fiber loss and imperfect polarization restoration, on the throughput and fidelity of the system. Second, an error model is derived for an extension of this communication architecture that allows for the production and storage of three-party entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. A performance analysis of the quantum communication architecture in qubit teleportation and quantum secret sharing communication protocols is presented. Recent work on determining the channel capacity of optical channels is extended in several ways. Classical capacity is derived for a class of Gaussian Bosonic channels representing the quantum version of classical colored Gaussian-noise channels. The proof is strongly mo- tivated by the standard technique of whitening Gaussian noise used in classical information theory. Minimum output entropy problems related to these channel capacity derivations are also studied. These single-user Bosonic capacity results are extended to a multi-user scenario by deriving capacity regions for single-mode and wideband coherent-state multiple access channels. An even larger capacity region is obtained when the transmitters use non- classical Gaussian states, and an outer bound on the ultimate capacity region is presented
