Many Archean cratons are surrounded by Proterozoic mobile belts that have experienced episodes of tectonic re-activation over their lifetimes. This suggests that mobile belt lithosphere may be associated with long lived, inherited weakness. It is proposed that the proximity of this weakness can increase the longevity of deep Archean lithosphere by buffering Archean cratons from mantle derived stresses. The physical plausibility of this idea is explored through numerical simulations of mantle convection that include continents and allow for material rheologies that model the combined brittle and ductile behavior of the lithosphere. Within the simulations, the longevity of deep cratonic lithosphere does increase if it is buffered by mobile belts that can fail at relatively low stress levels.

Mobile Lipids detected using H-1-NMR in stimulated lymphocytes were correlated with cell cycle phase, expression of the interleukin-2 receptor alpha and proliferation to assess the activation status of the lymphocytes. Mobile lipid levels, IL-2R alpha expression and proliferation increased after treatment with PMA and ionomycin. PMA or ionomycin stimulation alone induced increased IL-2R alpha expressiom but not proliferation, PMA- but not ionomycin-stimulation generated mobile lipid, Treatment with anti-CD3 antibody did not increase IL-2R alpha expression or proliferation but did generate increased amounts of mobile lipid, The cell cycle status of thymocytes treated with anti-CD3, PMA or ionomycin alone indicated an. accumulation of the cells in the G(1) phase of the cell cycle, The generation of mobile lipid was abrogated in anti-CD3 antibody-stimulated thymic lymphocytes but not in splenic lymphocytes, using a phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C (PC-PLC) inhibitor which blocked cells in the G(1)/S phase of the cell cycle, This suggests that the H-1-NMR-detectable mobile Lipid may be generated in anti-CD3 antibody-stimulated thymic lymphocytes by the action of PC-PLC activity via the catabolism of PC, in the absence of classical signs of activation. Cervical cancer is a serious public health problem in women in developing countries because of absence or ineffectiveness of screening programs. Several biases to access medical care and inequity of public health system in a continental country like Brazil limit the implementation of adequate programs to appropriately prevent the cervical cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the results of applying the mobile unit (MU) for cervical cancer screening. From May 2003 to May 2004, a cervical cancer screening was offered to women aged 20-69 years, residing in 19 municipal districts of the Barretos county region, in Sao Paulo. Out of the 9,560 examination available, 2,964 (31%) women underwent screening. The medium distance traveled by the MU was 45 km. The medium time spent by women in the MU for completion of the questionnaire and doing the exam was 20 minutes. It was observed that 17.0% of women screened had never had the test or had not had it repeated within the last 3 years. The negative response was more common among women aged 20 to 29 years and 60 to 69 years and among women with less schooling and lower socio-economic income (P < 0.05). MU can significantly overcome the chronic deficiency of public health system accessibility offering opportunity to these women to participate in screening programs. Diagn. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the initial results of a prostate cancer screening program using mobile units in Brazil. METHODS Since 2004, we have conducted a program of prostate cancer screening using mobile units across 231 municipalities from 6 Brazilian states. RESULTS A total of 17 571 men were evaluated by clinical history, digital rectal examination (DRE), and serum free and total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The recommendations for biopsy were a PSA level of >= 4.0 ng/mL, DRE findings suspicious for cancer, or a PSA level of 2.5-4.0 ng/mL with a percent-free PSA level <15%. The biopsy protocol included 12 biopsy cores from the peripheral zone, 2 from the transition zone, and additional sampling of suspicious areas. The cumulative cancer detection rate was 3.7%. The main indication for biopsy was a PSA level of >= 4.0 ng/mL (51.2%), with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 44.1%. Another 19.7% of biopsied men had suspicious DRE findings with a normal PSA level (PPV 23.5%). A percent-free PSA level of <15% in men with a PSA level of 2.5-4.0 ng/mL and normal DRE findings yielded a PPV of 31.1%. The PPV was greater (70.9%) for the 7.1% of men with both suspicious DRE findings and a PSA level of >4.0 ng/mL. Most cancers were Stage T1-T2 (93.4%), and the percentage of Gleason score of >= 7 was 32.5%. The proportion of insignificant cancers according to Epstein`s criteria was 13.5%. CONCLUSIONS A mobile prostate cancer screening unit enabled an underserved population to gain access to specialized care through the public healthcare system. The growth of direct marketing has been attributed to rapid advances in technology and the changing market context. The fundamental ability of direct marketers to communicate with consumers and to elicit a response, combined with the ubiquitous nature and power of mobile digital technology, provides a synergy that will increase the potential for the success of direct marketing. The aim of this paper is to provide an analytical framework identifying the developments in the digital environment from e-marketing to m-marketing, and to alert direct marketers to the enhanced capabilities available to them.

We use published and new trace element data to identify element ratios which discriminate between arc magmas from the supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and those formed by direct melting of subducted crust (i.e. adakites). The clearest distinction is obtained with those element ratios which are strongly fractionated during refertilisation of the depleted mantle wedge, ultimately reflecting slab dehydration. Hence, adakites have significantly lower Pb/Nd and B/Be but higher Nb/Ta than typical arc magmas and continental crust as a whole. Although Li and Be are also overenriched in continental crust, behaviour of Li/Yb and Be/Nd is more complex and these ratios do not provide unique signatures of slab melting. Archaean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorites (TTGs) strongly resemble ordinary mantle wedge-derived arc magmas in terms of fluid-mobile trace element content, implying that they-did not form by slab melting but that they originated from mantle which was hydrated and enriched in elements lost from slabs during prograde dehydration. We suggest that Archaean TTGs formed by extensive fractional crystallisation from a mafic precursor. It is widely claimed that the time between the creation and subduction of oceanic lithosphere was significantly shorter in the Archaean (i.e. 20 Ma) than it is today. This difference was seen as an attractive explanation for the presumed preponderance of adakitic magmas during the first half of Earth's history. However, when we consider the effects of a higher potential mantle temperature on the thickness of oceanic crust, it follows that the mean age of oceanic lithosphere has remained virtually constant. Formation of adakites has therefore always depended on local plate geometry and not on potential mantle temperature.

This work discusses the use of optical flow to generate the sensorial information a mobile robot needs to react to the presence of obstacles when navigating in a non-structured environment. A sensing system based on optical flow and time-to-collision calculation is here proposed and experimented, which accomplishes two important paradigms. The first one is that all computations are performed onboard the robot, in spite of the limited computational capability available. The second one is that the algorithms for optical flow and time-to-collision calculations are fast enough to give the mobile robot the capability of reacting to any environmental change in real-time. Results of real experiments in which the sensing system here proposed is used as the only source of sensorial data to guide a mobile robot to avoid obstacles while wandering around are presented, and the analysis of such results allows validating the proposed sensing system.

O Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) caracteriza-se por uma série de distúrbios cognitivos e neurocomportamentais e sua prevalência mundial é estimada em 1 criança com TEA a cada 160 crianças com típico desenvolvimento (TD). Indivíduos com TEA apresentam dificuldade em interpretar as emoções alheias e em expressar sentimentos. As emoções podem ser associadas à manifestação de sinais fisiológicos, e, dentre eles, os sinais cerebrais têm sido muito abordados. A detecção dos sinais cerebrais de crianças com TEA pode ser benéfica para o esclarecimento de suas emoções e expressões. Atualmente, muitas pesquisas integram a robótica ao tratamento pedagógico do TEA, através da interação com crianças com esse transtorno, estimulando habilidades sociais, como a imitação e a comunicação. A avaliação dos estados mentais de crianças com TEA durante a sua interação com um robô móvel é promissora e assume um aspecto inovador. Assim, os objetivos deste trabalho foram captar sinais cerebrais de crianças com TEA e de crianças com TD, como grupo controle, para o estudo de seus estados emocionais e para avaliar seus estados mentais durante a interação com um robô móvel, e avaliar também a interação dessas crianças com o robô, através de escalas quantitativas. A técnica de registro dos sinais cerebrais escolhida foi a eletroencefalografia (EEG), a qual utiliza eletrodos colocados de forma não invasiva e não dolorosa sobre o couro cabeludo da criança. Os métodos para avaliar a eficiência do uso da robótica nessa interação foram baseados em duas escalas internacionais quantitativas: Escala de Alcance de Metas (do inglês Goal Attainment Scaling - GAS) e Escala de Usabilidade de Sistemas (do inglês System Usability Scale - SUS). Os resultados obtidos mostraram que, pela técnica de EEG, foi possível classificar os estados emocionais de crianças com TD e com TEA e analisar a atividade cerebral durante o início da interação com o robô, através dos ritmos alfa e beta. Com as avaliações GAS e SUS, verificou-se que o robô móvel pode ser considerado uma potencial ferramenta terapêutica para crianças com TEA.
