Mineralogical, hydrochemical and S isotope data were used to constrain hydrogeochemical processes that produce acid mine drainage from sulfidic waste at the historic Mount Morgan Au–Cu mine, and the factors controlling the concentration of SO4 and environmentally hazardous metals in the nearby Dee River in Queensland, Australia. Some highly contaminated acid waters, with metal contents up to hundreds of orders of magnitude greater than the Australia–New Zealand environmental standards, by-pass the water management system at the site and drain into the adjacent Dee River. Mine drainage precipitates at Mt. Morgan were classified into 4 major groups and were identified as hydrous sulfates and hydroxides of Fe and Al with various contents of other metals. These minerals contain adsorbed or mineralogically bound metals that are released into the water system after rainfall events. Sulfate in open pit water and collection sumps generally has a narrow range of S isotope compositions (δ34S = 1.8–3.7‰) that is comparable to the orebody sulfides and makes S isotopes useful for tracing SO4 back to its source. The higher δ34S values for No. 2 Mill Diesel sump may be attributed to a difference in the source. Dissolved SO4 in the river above the mine influence and 20 km downstream show distinctive heavier isotope compositions (δ34S = 5.4–6.8‰). The Dee River downstream of the mine is enriched in 34S (δ34S = 2.8–5.4‰) compared with mine drainage possibly as a result of bacterial SO4 reduction in the weir pools, and in the water bodies within the river channel. The SO4 and metals attenuate downstream by a combination of dilution with the receiving waters, SO4 reduction, and the precipitation of Fe and Al sulfates and hydroxides. It is suggested here that in subtropical Queensland, with distinct wet and dry seasons, temporary reducing environments in the river play an important role in S isotope systematics

Neste artigo é apresentado um Sistema de Apoio à Decisão Espacial (SADE) onde os decisores podem facilmente definir diferentes tipos de problemas espaciais recorrendo a diferentes categorias de objetos, pré-definidas ou a definir, associando- lhes características com ou sem dependência espacial, e indicando formas de interferência (impactos) entre essas caracte- rísticas/propriedades. A análise espacial para determinação ou avaliação de configurações alternativas para a localização de diferentes tipos de ocorrências espaciais será feita através da utilização interativa do SADE de acordo com conjuntos de regras intrínsecas aos vários elementos gráficos (objetos, categorias, características, impactos) utilizados na definição dos problemas. O teste à generalidade representativa e analítica do SADE proposto é efectuado recorrendo a um problema concreto, suficientemente específico e complexo, relativo à aplicação de modelos gaussianos para o estudo da dispersão atmosférica de eventuais poluentes resultantes do tratamento de resíduos sólidos. A região em estudo está limitada, neste exemplo, ao município de Coimbra, Portugal. Para este município estão acessíveis, e são utilizados, os dados demográficos ao nível da secção de voto (censos oficiais) e, como tal, é possível a realização de um estudo realístico do impacto com populações humanas.

O presente trabalho tem como objectivo o diagnóstico ambiental da empresa Lacticinios do Paiva, S.A, a avaliação da água do processo e da ETARI e o estudo da fermentação do soro de queijo com o intuito de produção de bioetanol. No diagnóstico ambiental da empresa, observou-se que 18.227.731 litros de leite usados anualmente geram 5.031 ton/ano de queijo, 7.204 ton/ano de soro de queijo, 74.201 m3/ano de efluente liquido, 14 ton/ano de plástico e 20 ton/ano de cartão. Os principais problemas com necessidade de optimização são a recuperação de água das lavagens, avaliação da produção de biogás no digestor anaeróbio, recuperação do volume de leite que é desperdiçado na produção de queijo fresco de longa duração, avaliação da eficiência energética da empresa, valorização das natas e do soro de queijo. Decidiu-se neste trabalho avaliar a possibilidade de reciclagem das águas de lavagem, avaliar o funcionamento da ETARI face à legislação existente e estudar a possibilidade de valorização do soro de queijo. Na avaliação das águas de processo das lavagens para posterior reciclagem, verifica-se que relativamente ao pH e aos sólidos suspensos não existe problema, podendo encarar-se a hipótese de reciclagem directa. No entanto, no que respeita à carga orgânica das águas de lavagem do sistema de ultrafiltração do queijo fresco de longa duração, constata-se que esta não poderia ser utilizada novamente, uma vez que apresenta valores elevados de CQO. Para a sua reutilização, será necessário remover a CQO, hipótese que se estudou com resultados positivos. Verificou-se que, um tratamento por adsorção em carvão activado precedido de microfiltração, reduz a CQO de forma significativa permitindo admitir a hipótese de reciclagem da água, nomeadamente para as 1ª e 3ª águas de lavagem. As outras águas teriam necessidade de mais tempo de contacto com o carvão activado. No sentido de avaliar o funcionamento da ETARI, foram analisadas várias correntes da mesma, em particular a do efluente final, no que respeita a parâmetros como: pH, Sólidos Suspensos Totais, Carência Química de Oxigénio, Carência Bioquímica de Oxigénio, Turvação, Nitratos, Fósforo Total, Azoto Kjeldalh, Azoto Amoniacal e Cloretos. Observou-se que os valores para o efluente final da ETARI são os seguintes: pH compreendido entre [7,21 – 8,69], SST entre [65,3 – 3110] mg/L, CQO entre [92,5 – 711,5] mg/L, CBO5 entre [58 – 161] mg/L, NO3- entre [10,8 – 106,7] mg/L, fósforo total entre [8,3 – 64,3] mg/L, turvação entre [67,7 – 733,3] FTU e cloretos entre [459,9 – 619,81] mg/L; pode-se dizer que os parâmetros analisados se encontram quase sempre dentro da gama de valores impostos pela Câmara Municipal de Lamego pelo que o efluente pode ser lançado no Colector Municipal de Cambres. Relativamente à fermentação alcoólica do soro de queijo, verifica-se que a levedura Kluyveromyces Marxianus consegue degradar praticamente todo o açúcar presente no permeado produzindo assim uma quantidade razoável de etanol. Quando se utilizou a levedura Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, a produção de etanol foi muito reduzida, como esperado, dado que esta levedura apresenta dificuldades na metabolização da lactose. Constatou-se assim que a melhor levedura para a fermentação do permeado do soro de queijo é a Kluyveromyces Marxianus, estimando-se em 150 mg a produção de etanol por L de soro.

The use of wastes and industrial by-products as building materials is an important issue in order to decrease costs with waste management and the embodied energy of building products. Scrap tire rubber has been studied as aggregate for cementitious materials. Natural hydraulic limes are natural binders with particular characteristics of both air and hydraulic binders. Their specifications became stricter with the last version of EN 459-1:2010. In this study scrap tire rubber was used as additional aggregate of mortars, based on NHL3.5 and natural sand. Different particle size fractions and proportions of scrap tire rubber were used: a mix obtained almost directly from industry (only after sieving for preparation of particle sizes similar to mortar aggregate) and separated fine, medium and coarse fractions; 0%, 18%, 36% and 54% weight of binder, corresponding to 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% weight of sand. The influence of the rubbers´ additions on the mortars´ fresh state, mechanical and physical performance is presented, namely by flow table consistency, water retention, fresh bulk density, dynamic elasticity modulus, flexural and compressive strength, open porosity and bulk density, capillary absorption, drying and thermal conductivity. The use of the rubber mix coming from the waste tire industry seems advantageous and may open possibilities for use as raw material by the mortars industry.

Can coeliac consumers enjoy risk-free dining? This project was designed to assess awareness of coeliac condition and to highlight the importance of providing gluten-free food. The survey was conducted in two parts: first, our samplers purchased gluten-free meals from restaurants, and then they completed a questionnaire. This asked questions relating to their purchasing experience and the level of knowledge displayed by restaurant staff. Their whole meal was then dispatched to the laboratory for analysis of the gluten content. Our samplers found that they were able to identify and purchase a gluten-free meal from the restaurants that they visited. While some were supplied with meals that actually contained gluten, the level of gluten in those meals varied considerably. Our samplers ordered 260 meals. Sixteen per cent of these contained gluten, and six and a half per cent were deemed unsatisfactory (containing more than 200mg/kg of gluten). Some of these samples could produce acute illness in coeliac customers. It is likely that the samples with low levels of gluten had been cross-contaminated, while those containing higher levels are more likely to contain some form of gluten in the ingredients. Food service staff rely on advice and input from the chef or manager to recommend and serve a glutenfree meal. Confident staff and well-signposted menu choices do not guarantee risk-free dining for coeliac customers. The survey result supports our view that robust training is required to improve the knowledge of chefs, managers and staff, and help them to manage this hazard. A cohort initiated with 121 eggs, yielding 105 first instar nymphs (eclosion rate: 86.78%), allowed us to observe the entire life cycle of Triatoma ryckmani under laboratory conditions (24ºC and 62% relative humidity), by feeding them on anesthetized hamsters. It was possible to obtain 62 adults and the cycle from egg to adult took a mean of 359.69 days with a range of 176-529 days (mortality rate of nymphs: 40.95%). Mean life span of adults was of 81 days for females and 148 days for males. The developmental periods of 4th and 5th nymphs were longer than those of the other instars. This suggests that young siblings have a better chance of taking a hemolymph meal from older ones, in order to survive during fasting periods during prolonged absences of vertebrate hosts from natural ecotopes. The stomach contents of 37 insects showed blood from rodents (15 cases), lizards (7 cases), birds (6 cases) and insect hemolymph (7 cases). Out of 10 insects fed by xenodiagnosis on a Trypanosoma cruzi infected mouse, all but one became infected with the parasite.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Energy metabolism is increasingly recognized as a key factor in the pathogenesis of acute brain injury (ABI). We review the role of cerebral lactate metabolism and summarize evidence showing that lactate may act as supplemental fuel after ABI. RECENT FINDINGS: The role of cerebral lactate has shifted from a waste product to a potentially preferential fuel and signaling molecule. According to the astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle model, glycolytic lactate might act as glucose-sparing substrate. Lactate also is emerging as a key signal to regulate cerebral blood flow (CBF) and a neuroprotective agent after experimental ABI. Clinical investigation using cerebral microdialysis shows the existence of two main lactate patterns, ischemic - from anaerobic metabolism - and nonischemic, from activated glycolysis, whereby lactate can be used as supplemental energy fuel. Preliminary clinical data suggests hypertonic lactate solutions improve cerebral energy metabolism and are an effective treatment for elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) after ABI. SUMMARY: Lactate can be a supplemental fuel for the injured brain and is important to regulate glucose metabolism and CBF. Exogenous lactate supplementation may be neuroprotective after experimental ABI. Recent clinical data from ABI patients suggest hypertonic lactate solutions may be a valid therapeutic option for secondary energy dysfunction and elevated ICP.
