The exposure to dust and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) of 15 truck drivers from Geneva, Switzerland, was measured. The drivers were divided between "long-distance" drivers and "local" drivers and between smokers and nonsmokers and were compared with a control group of 6 office workers who were also divided into smokers and nonsmokers. Dust was measured on 1 workday both by a direct-reading instrument and by sampling. The local drivers showed higher exposure to dust (0.3 mg/m3) and PAH than the long-distance drivers (0.1 mg/m3), who showed no difference with the control group. This observation may be due to the fact that the local drivers spend more time in more polluted areas, such as streets with heavy traffic and construction sites, than do the long-distance drivers. Smoking does not influence exposure to dust and PAH of professional truck drivers, as measured in this study, probably because the ventilation rate of the truck cabins is relatively high even during cold days (11-15 r/h). The distribution of dust concentrations was shown in some cases to be quite different from the expected log-normal distribution. The contribution of diesel exhaust to these exposures could not be estimated since no specific tracer was used. However, the relatively low level of dust exposure dose not support the hypothesis that present day levels of diesel exhaust particulates play a significant role in the excess occurrence of lung cancer observed in professional truck drivers.

The solution for the ‘Contested Garment Problem’, proposed in the Babylonic Talmud, suggests that each agent should receive at least some part of the resources whenever the demand overcomes the available amount. In this context, we propose a new method to define lower bounds on awards, an idea that has underlied the theoretical analysis of bankruptcy problems from its beginning (O’Neill, 1982) to present day (Dominguez and Thomson, 2006). Specifically, starting from the fact that a society establishes its own set of ‘Commonly Accepted Equity Principles’, our proposal ensures to each agent the smallest amount she gets according to all the admissible rules. As in general this new bound will not exhaust the estate, we analyze its recursive application for different sets of equity principles. We report experimental and numerical results showing how certain N-dimensional dynamical systems are able to exhibit complex time evolutions based on the nonlinear combination of N-1 oscillation modes. The experiments have been done with a family of thermo-optical systems of effective dynamical dimension varying from 1 to 6. The corresponding mathematical model is an N-dimensional vector field based on a scalar-valued nonlinear function of a single variable that is a linear combination of all the dynamic variables. We show how the complex evolutions appear associated with the occurrence of successive Hopf bifurcations in a saddle-node pair of fixed points up to exhaust their instability capabilities in N dimensions. For this reason the observed phenomenon is denoted as the full instability behavior of the dynamical system. The process through which the attractor responsible for the observed time evolution is formed may be rather complex and difficult to characterize. Nevertheless, the well-organized structure of the time signals suggests some generic mechanism of nonlinear mode mixing that we associate with the cluster of invariant sets emerging from the pair of fixed points and with the influence of the neighboring saddle sets on the flow nearby the attractor. The generation of invariant tori is likely during the full instability development and the global process may be considered as a generalized Landau scenario for the emergence of irregular and complex behavior through the nonlinear superposition of oscillatory motions

Background: There is growing evidence that traffic-related air pollution reduces birth weight. Improving exposure assessment is a key issue to advance in this research area. Objective: We investigated the effect of prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution via geographic information system (GIS) models on birth weight in 570 newborns from the INMA (Environment and Childhood) Sabadell cohort. Methods: We estimated pregnancy and trimester-specific exposures to nitrogen dioxide and aromatic hydrocarbons [benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, and o-xylene (BTEX)] by using temporally adjusted land-use regression (LUR) models. We built models for NO2 and BTEX using four and three 1-week measurement campaigns, respectively, at 57 locations. We assessed the relationship between prenatal air pollution exposure and birth weight with linear regression models. We performed sensitivity analyses considering time spent at home and time spent in nonresidential outdoor environments during pregnancy. Results: In the overall cohort, neither NO2 nor BTEX exposure was significantly associated with birth weight in any of the exposure periods. When considering only women who spent < 2 hr/day in nonresidential outdoor environments, the estimated reductions in birth weight associated with an interquartile range increase in BTEX exposure levels were 77 g [95% confidence interval (CI), 7–146 g] and 102 g (95% CI, 28–176 g) for exposures during the whole pregnancy and the second trimester, respectively. The effects of NO2 exposure were less clear in this subset. Conclusions: The association of BTEX with reduced birth weight underscores the negative role of vehicle exhaust pollutants in reproductive health. Time–activity patterns during pregnancy complement GIS-based models in exposure assessment.

Road transport emissions are a major contributor to ambient particulate matter concentrations and have been associated with adverse health effects. Therefore, these emissions are targeted through increasingly stringent European emission standards. These policies succeed in reducing exhaust emissions, but do not address "nonexhaust" emissions from brake wear, tire wear, road wear, and suspension in air of road dust. Is this a problem? To what extent do nonexhaust emissions contribute to ambient concentrations of PM10 or PM2.5? In the near future, wear emissions may dominate the remaining traffic-related PM10 emissions in Europe, mostly due to the steep decrease in PM exhaust emissions. This underlines the need to determine the relevance of the wear emissions as a contribution to the existing ambient PM concentrations, and the need to assess the health risks related to wear particles, which has not yet received much attention. During a workshop in 2011, available knowledge was reported and evaluated so as to draw conclusions on the relevance of traffic-related wear emissions for air quality policy development. On the basis of available evidence, which is briefly presented in this paper, it was concluded that nonexhaust emissions and in particular suspension in air of road dust are major contributors to exceedances at street locations of the PM10 air quality standards in various European cities. Furthermore, wear-related PM emissions that contain high concentrations of metals may (despite their limited contribution to the mass of nonexhaust emissions) cause significant health risks for the population, especially those living near intensely trafficked locations. To quantify the existing health risks, targeted research is required on wear emissions, their dispersion in urban areas, population exposure, and its effects on health. Such information will be crucial for environmental policymakers as an input for discussions on the need to develop control strategies.

Amana Farms is using an anaerobic digestion, which is a two-stage digester that converts manure and other organic wastes into three valuable by-products: 1) Biogas – to fuel an engine/generator set to create electricity; 2) Biosolids - used as a livestock bedding material or as a soil amendment; 3) Liquid stream - will be applied as a low-odor fertilizer to growing crops. (see Business Plan appendix H) The methane biogas will be collected from the two stages of the anaerobic digestion vessel and used for fuel in the combined heat and power engine/generator sets. The engine/generator sets are natural gasfueled reciprocating engines modified to burn biogas. The electricity produced by the engine/generator sets will be used to offset on-farm power consumption and the excess power will be sold directly to Amana Society Service Company as a source of green power. The waste heat, in the form of hot water, will be collected from both the engine jacket liquid cooling system and from the engine exhaust (air) system. Approximately 30 to 60% of this waste heat will be used to heat the digester. The remaining waste heat will be used to heat other farm buildings and may provide heat for future use for drying corn or biosolids. The digester effluent will be pumped from the effluent pit at the end of the anaerobic digestion vessel to a manure solids separator. The mechanical manure separator will separate the effluent digested waste stream into solid and liquid fractions. The solids will be dewatered to approximately a 35% solid material. Some of the separated solids will be used by the farm for a livestock bedding replacement. The remaining separated solids may be sold to other farms for livestock bedding purposes or sold to after-markets, such as nurseries and composters for soil amendment material. The liquid from the manure separator, now with the majority of the large solids removed, will be pumped into the farm’s storage lagoon. A significant advantage of the effluent from the anaerobic digestion treatment process is that the viscosity of the effluent is such that the liquid effluent can now be pumped through an irrigation nozzle for field spreading.

RATIONALE: Induction of oxidative stress and impairment of the antioxidant defense are considered important biological responses following nanoparticle (NP) exposure. The acellular in vitro dithiothreitol (DTT) assay is proposed to measure the oxidative potential of NP. In addition, DTT can be considered as a model compound of sulfur containing antioxidants. The objective of this work is to evaluate the surface reactivity in solution of a NP panel toward DTT. METHOD: The NP panel was composed of four carbonaceous particles, six types of metal oxides and silver with primary size ranged from 7 to 300 nm. Suspensions were prepared in surfactant solution with 30 min sonication. DTT was used as reductant to evaluate the oxidative properties of the different NP. The determination of the NP ability to catalyze electron transfer from DTT to oxygen was carried out as described in Sauvain et al., Nanotoxicology, 2008, 2:3, 121−129. RESULTS: All the carbonaceous NP catalyzed the oxidation of DTT by oxygen following the mass based order: carbon black > diesel exhaust particle > nanotubes > fullerene. A contrasting reactivity was observed for the metallic NP. Except for nickel oxide and metallic silver, which reacted similarly to the carbonaceous NP, all other metal oxides hindered the oxidation of DTT by oxygen, with ZnO being the most effective one. CONCLUSIONS : DTT was stabilized against oxidation in the presence of metal oxide NP in the solution. This suggests that different chemical interactions take place compared with carbonaceous NP. To explain these differences, we hypothesize that DTT could form complexes with the metal oxide surface (or dissolved metal ions), rendering it less susceptible to oxidation. By analogy, such a process could be thought to apply in biological systems with sulfur−containing antioxidants, reducing their buffer capacity. Such NP could thus contribute to oxidative stress by an alternative mechanism.

As modern molecular biology moves towards the analysis of biological systems as opposed to their individual components, the need for appropriate mathematical and computational techniques for understanding the dynamics and structure of such systems is becoming more pressing. For example, the modeling of biochemical systems using ordinary differential equations (ODEs) based on high-throughput, time-dense profiles is becoming more common-place, which is necessitating the development of improved techniques to estimate model parameters from such data. Due to the high dimensionality of this estimation problem, straight-forward optimization strategies rarely produce correct parameter values, and hence current methods tend to utilize genetic/evolutionary algorithms to perform non-linear parameter fitting. Here, we describe a completely deterministic approach, which is based on interval analysis. This allows us to examine entire sets of parameters, and thus to exhaust the global search within a finite number of steps. In particular, we show how our method may be applied to a generic class of ODEs used for modeling biochemical systems called Generalized Mass Action Models (GMAs). In addition, we show that for GMAs our method is amenable to the technique in interval arithmetic called constraint propagation, which allows great improvement of its efficiency. To illustrate the applicability of our method we apply it to some networks of biochemical reactions appearing in the literature, showing in particular that, in addition to estimating system parameters in the absence of noise, our method may also be used to recover the topology of these networks.

Vanerin tai kertopuun valmistusprosessissaviilun kuivaukseen käytetään suurin osa koko valmistusprosessin primäärienergiasta. Viilunkuivauskoneessa viilun sisältämä vesi siirretään tyypillisesti prosessihöyryllä lämmitettyyn viilunkuivaajan kiertoilmaan höyrystämällä ja poistetaanviilunkuivaajasta poistoilman mukana. Viilunkuivaajan poistoilma on lämmintä jaerittäin suuren kosteuspitoisuutensa takia sisältää runsaasti energiaa.

Diplomityössä suoritettiin Lappeenrannassa uudessa asuntokerrostalossa asumisviihtyvyysmittauksia vuonna 2002. Kohteessa on koneellinen poistoilmanvaihto, jossa raitisilma johdetaan huonetilaan ikkunan yläpuolella sijaitsevien rakomaisten raitisilmaventtiilien kautta, sekä vesikiertoinen lattialämmitys. Diplomityössä kehitettiin Fluent-virtauslaskentaohjelmalla kaksiuloitteinen malli asuntokerrostalon huoneesta. Kehitettyä simulointimenetelmää käytettiin huoneen lämpöolosuhteiden hallinnan kehittämisessä mallintamalla tilan ilmavirtauskentälle yksityiskohtainen lämpötila- ja nopeusjakauma. Huoneen ilman nopeus- ja lämpötilajakaumaa tarkasteltiin eri lattia- ja ikkunapinnan lämpötiloilla, eri geometrioilla ja käyttäeneri virtauksia kuvaavia malleja. Huoneesta simuloitiin 12 eri tapausta, joista valittiin parhaiten mittaustuloksiin sopiva. Tähän tapaukseen tehtiin muutoksia lattia- ja ikkunapinnan lämpötiloihin. Työssä selvitettiin, kuinka nämä muutokset vaikuttavat huoneen nopeus- ja lämpötilajakaumiin.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli selvittää erään ilmanvaihtokoneen lämmöntalteenottokennon vuosihyötysuhde japohtia voitaisiinko ilmastointikoneen energiatehokkuutta parantaa käyttämällä nykyisen ristivirtalämmönsiirtimen tilalla vastavirtalämmönsiirrintä tai poistoilmalämpöpumppua. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli mitata kahden ilmanvaihtokoneeseen liitettävän äänenvaimentimen vaimennuskyky ja pyrkiä parantamaan näiden vaimennusta. Työn teoriaosassa käsitellään yleisellä tasolla eri ilmanvaihtotapojen ja lämmöntalteenottomenetelmien toimintaperiaatteita ja soveltuvuuksiaeri tilanteisiin. Työn kokeellisessa osassa mitataan ilmanvaihtokoneen lämmöntalteenoton toiminta eri sääolosuhteissa ja lasketaan tulosten perusteella laitteelle lämpötila- ja entalpiavuosihyötysuhteet. Äänenvaimentimesta rakennetaan kaksi kehitysversiota, joiden mittaustuloksia verrataan alkuperäisen vaimentimen vaimennuskykyyn. Lämmöntalteenottoja vertailtaessa havaittiin, että suositeltavin kehitysvaihtoehto olisi vastavirtalämmönsiirtimeen siirtyminen sen yksinkertaisen rakenteen ja hyvän hyötysuhteen ansiosta.Äänenvaimentimien rakenteessa kannattaa mittausten ja pohdinnan perusteella siirtyä seinämillä jaettuun vaimentimeen.

Henkilöautojen pakokaasut sisältävät satoja eri yhdisteitä, joista monet ovat ihmisen terveydelle haitallisia. Pysäköintihallien ilmanlaatua on tähän asti mitattu pääasiassa hiilimonoksidiantureilla, jolloin ilmanvaihtokoneita on voitu käyttää tarvepohjaisesti. Johtopäätöksissä on kuvattu ehdotus hiilidioksidiantureiden käytöstä pysäköintihallien ilmanvaihdon ohjauksessa.

UPM-Pelloksen vaneritehtaat muodostavat Euroopan suurimman vanerintuotantoyksiköntuotantokapasiteetilla mitattuna. Pelloksen vaneritehtailla on kolme eri tehdasta yhdellä tehdasalueella. Vaneritehtaiden viilunkuivaus on hyvin merkittävä primäärienergian kuluttaja. Tehtaiden prosessienergian saannista huolehtii Järvi-Suomen Voiman voimalaitos. Viilunkuivaajien poistokaasuista jalauhteista saadaan talteen merkittävästi sekundäärienergiaa. Sekundäärienergia kulutetaan pääosin hautomoaltaalla tukkien haudontaan. Tukkien haudonta pyritäänhoitamaan lähes kokonaan sekundäärienergialla. Primäärihöyryä tarvitaan altaalle kuitenkin huoltoseisakkien aikana. Tässä diplomityössä tutustutaan vanerin valmistuksen prosessiin Pelloksen vaneritehtailla. Työssä kartoitetaan tehtaiden prosessien, hautomoaltaan ja voimalaitoksen välisiä energiavirtauksia. Työn tarkoituksena on saada selville mahdollisia hyödyntämättömiä potentiaaleja tehtaiden energiankäytössä. Työssä pohditaan myös mahdollisia eri tapoja energiankäytön tehostukselle. Voimalaitoksen höyrykuorma on kuivauskoneiden kulutuksesta riippuen ajoittain voimakkaasti vaihtelevaa. Höyrykuorman vaihtelu aiheuttaa ongelmia voimalaitoksen tuotannolle. Työssä pohditaan höyrykuorman tasausmahdollisuutta muun muassa höyryakun avulla.
