Two systems of La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda and La2-xThxCuO4+/-lambda, mixed oxides with K2NiF4 structure were synthesized. The compositions and structures of the catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, XPS, chemical analysis and so on. The catalytic behavior for the direct decomposition of NO has been investigated. The results show that the catalytic activity is closely related to the oxygen vacancy and lower valence metallic ion in the direct decomposition of NO. The presence of oxygen vacancy is necessary for mixed oxide to have steady activity in NO decomposition.

Results are presented for simulations of electron-positron pair production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions leading to electron capture and positron ejection. We apply a two-center relativistic continuum distorted-wave model to represent the electron or positron dynamics during the collision process. The results are compared with experimental cross-section data for La57+ and Au79+ impact on gold, silver, and copper targets. The theory is in good agreement with experiment for La57+ impact, verifying the result that the process increases in importance with both collision energy and target atomic number, and improves upon previous simulations of this process.

Non-resonant multiphoton ionization combined with quadrupole and time-of-flight analysis has been used to study sputtering by both atomic and molecular ion beams. The mass spectra and energy distributions of both sputtered atoms and secondary ions produced by 3.6 keV Ar+, N+, N-2(+), CF2+ and CF3+ ion bombardment at 45 degrees to a polycrystalline copper target have been measured. The energy distributions of the copper ions and atoms are found to be different and quite complex. The ion distributions can generally be described by a linear collision cascade model, with possible evidence for a knock-on contribution. The sputtered atom distributions are partially described by a combination of linear collision cascade and dense cascade (thermal spike) models. This is interpreted as support for a time-evolving sputtering mechanism.

Land application of wastes from concentrated animal feeding operations results in accumulation of copper (Cu) and antimicrobials in terrestrial systems. Interaction between Cu and antimicrobials may change Cu speciation in soil solution, and affect Cu bioavailability and toxicity. In this study, earthworms were exposed to quartz sand percolated with different concentrations of Cu and ciprofloxacin (CIP). Copper uptake by earthworms, its subcellular partition, and toxicity were studied. An increase in the applied CIP decreased the free Cu ion concentration in external solution and mortalities of earthworm, while Cu contents in earthworms increased. Copper and CIP in earthworms were fractionated into five fractions: a granular fraction (D), a fraction consisting of tissue fragments, cell membranes, and intact cells (E), a microsomal fraction (F), a denatured proteins fraction (G), and a heat-stable proteins fraction (H). Most of the CIP in earthworms was in fraction H. Copper was redistributed from the metal-sensitive fraction E to fractions D, F, G, and H with increasing CIP concentration. These results challenge the free ion activity model and suggested that Cu may be partly taken up as Cu-CIP complexes in earthworms, changing the bioavailability, subcellular distribution, and toxicity of Cu to earthworms.

Spatially and temporally varying neutral, ion and electron number densities have been mapped out within laser ablated plasma plumes expanding into vacuum. Ablation of a magnesium target was performed using a KrF laser, 30 ns pulse duration and 248 nm wavelength. During the initial stage of plasma expansion (t <EQ 100 ns) interferometry has been used to obtain line averaged electron number densities, for laser power densities on target in the range 1.3 - 3.0 X 108 W/cm2. Later in the plasma expansion (t equals 1 microsecond(s) ) simultaneous absorption and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy has been used to determine 3D neutral and ion number densities, for a power density equal to 6.7 X 107 W/cm2. Two distinct regions within the plume were identified. One is a fast component (approximately 106 cm-1) consisting of ions and neutrals with maximum number densities observed to be approximately 30 and 4 X 1012 cm-3 respectively, and the second consists of slow moving neutral material at a number density of up to 1015 cm-3. Additionally a Langmuir probe has been used to obtain ion and electron number densities at very late times in the plasma expansion (1 microsecond(s) <EQ t <EQ 15 microsecond(s) ). A copper target was ablated using a Nd:YAG laser, 7.5 ns duration and 532 nm (2 (omega) ) wavelength, with a power density on target equal to 6 X 108 W/cm2. Two regions within the plume with different velocities were observed. Within a fast component (approximately 3 X 106 cms-1) electron and ion number densities of the order 5 X 1012 cm-3 were observed and within the second slower component (approximately 106 cms-1) electron and ion number densities of the order 1 - 2 X 1013 cm-3 were determined.

This investigation comprises a comparison of experimental and theoretical dechanneling of MeV protons in copper single crystals. Dechanneling results when an ion's transverse energy increases to the value where the ion can undergo small impact parameter collisions with individual atoms. Depth dependent dechanneling rates were determined as functions of lattice temperature, ion beam energy and crystal axis orientation. Ion beam energies were IMeV and 2MeV,temperatures ranged from 35 K to 280 K and the experiment was carried out along both the (lOa) and <110) axes. Experimental data took the form of aligned and random Rutherford backscattered energy spectra. Dechanneling rates were extracted from these spectra using a single scattering theory that took explicit account of the different stopping powers experienced by channeled and dechanneled ions and also included a correction factor to take into account multiple scattering effects along the ion's trajectory. The assumption of statistical equilibrium and small angle scattering of the channeled ions allows a description of dechanneling in terms of the solution of a diffusion like equation which contains a so called diffusion function. The diffusion function is shown to be related to the increase in average transverse energy. Theoretical treatments of increase in average transverse energy due to collisions of projectiles with channel electrons and thermal perturbations in the lattice potential are reviewed. Using the diffusion equation and the electron density in the channel centre as a fitting parameter dechanneling rates are extracted. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment has been demonstrated. Electron densities determined in the fitting procedure appear to be realistic. The surface parameters show themselves to be good indicators of the quality of the crystal.

The thesis deals with the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity studies of supported cobalt(ii), nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of O-phenylenediamine and Schiff bases derived from 3-hydroxyquinoxaline -2-carboxaldehyde. Zeolite encapsulation and polymer anchoring was employed for supporting the complexes. The characterization techniques proved that the encapsulation as well as polymer supporting has been successfully achieved. The catalytic activity studies revealed that the activities of the simple complexes are improved upon encapsulation. Various characterization techniques are used such as, chemical analysis, EPR, magnetic measurements, FTIR studies, thermal analysis, electronic spectra, XRD, SEM, surface area, and GC.The present study indicated that the that the mechanism of oxidation of catechol and DTBC by hydrogen peroxide is not altered by the change in the coordination sphere around the metal ion due to encapsulation. This fact suggests outer sphere mechanism for the reactions. The catalytic activity by zeolite encapsulated complex was found to be slower than that by the neat complex. The slowing down of the reaction in the zeolite case is probably due to the constraint imposed by the zeolite framework. The rate of DTBC ( 3,5-di-tert-butylchatechol)oxidation was found to be greater than the rate of catechol oxidation. This is obviously due to the presence of electron donating tertiary butyl groups.

The complexation of Cu by sewage sludge-derived dissolved organic matter (SSDOM) is a process by which the environmental significance of the element may become enhanced due to reduced soil sorption and, hence, increased mobility. The work described in this paper used an ion selective electrode procedure to show that SSDOM complexation of Cu was greatest at intermediate pH values because competition between hydrogen ions and Cu for SSDOM binding sites, and between hydroxyl ions and SSDOM as Cu ligands, was lowest at such values. Batch sorption experiments further showed that the process of Cu complexation by SSDOM provided an explanation for enhanced desorption of Cu from the solid phase of a contaminated, organic matter-rich, clay loam soil, and reduced adsorption of Cu onto the solid phase of a sandy loam soil. Complexation of Cu by SSDOM did not affect uptake of Cu by spring barley plants, when compared to free ionic Cu, in a sand-culture pot experiment. However, it did appear to lead to greater biomass yields of the plant; perhaps indicating that the Cu-SSDOM complex had a lower toxicity towards the plant than the free Cu ion.

A new mononuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL(ClO4)(2)] (1) has been derived from symmetrical tetradentate di-Schiff base, N,N'-bis-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L) and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The copper atom assumes a tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry with two perchlorate oxygens coordinated very weakly in the axial positions. Reactions of I with sodium azide, ammonium thiocyanate or sodium nitrite solution yielded compounds [CuL(N-3)]ClO4 (2), [CuL(SCN)ClO4 (3) or [CuL(NO2)]-ClO4 (4), respectively, all of which have been characterized by X-ray analysis. The geometries of the penta-coordinated copper(H) in complexes 2-4 are intermediate between square pyramid and trigonal bipyramid (tbp) having the Addition parameters (tau) 0.47, 0.45 and 0.58, respectively. In complex 4, the nitrite ion is coordinated as a chelating ligand and essentially both the 0 atoms of the nitrite occupy one axial site. Complex 1 shows distinct preference for the anion in the order SCN- > N-3(-) > NO2- in forming the complexes 24 when treated with a SCN-/N-3(-)/NO2- mixture. Two new hexa-coordinated mononuclear copper(II) complexes of two ligands L-1 and L-2 containing NSSN donor sets formulated as [Cu(L)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2) [1a, L = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane (L-1), 1b L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl-methylthio)propane (L-2)] were synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. In 1a the single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis showed a distorted octahedral geometry about copper(II) ion. The crystal packing evidences pairs of complexes arranged about a center of symmetry and connected through a H-bond occurring between aquo ligands and nitrate anions. On reaction with chloride and pseudohalides (N-3(-) and SCN-), in acetonitrile at ambient temperature. complexes 1 changed to monocationic penta-coordinated mononuclear copper(H) species formulated as [Cu(L)(Cl)]NO3 (2), [Cu(L)(N-3)]NO3 (3). and [Cu(L)(SCN)]NO3 (4). These copper(II) complexes have been isolated in pure form from the reaction mixtures and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structure of 2a, established by X-ray crystallography, shows a trigonal bipyramidal geometry about the metal ion with a trigonality index (tau) of 0.561. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Using the 1:2 condensate (L) of diethylenetriamine and benzaldehyde as the main ligand, binuclear copper(l) complexes [Cu2L2(4,4'-bipyridine)](CIO4)(2).0.5H(2)O (1a) and [Cu2L2(1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane)](CIO4)(2) (1b) are synthesised. The two metal ions in la are bridged by 4,4'-bipyridine and those in 1b by 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, From the X-ray crystal structure of la, each metal ion is found to be bound to three N atoms of L and one of the two N atoms of the bridging ligand in a distorted tetrahedral fashion. The Cu(I)-N bond lengths in la lie in the range of 1.998(5)-2.229(6) Angstrom. Electrochemical studies in dichloromethane (DCM) show that the (Cu2N8)-N-I moieties in la and 1b are composed of two essentially non-interacting (CuN4)-N-I cores with Cu-II/I potential of 0.44 V vs. SCE. While la displays metal induced quenching of the inherent emission of 4,4'-bipyridine in DCM solution, 1b exhibits two weak emission bands in DCM solution at 425 and 477 nm (total quantum yield = 3.59 x 10(-5)) originating from MLCT excited states. With the help of Extended Huckel calculations it is established that the higher energy emission in 1b is from Cu(I) --> bridging-ligand charge transfer excited state and the lower energy one in 1b from Cu(I) --> L charge transfer excited state.

The copper(II) complex [Cu(bdoa)(H2O)2] (bdoaH2 = benzene-1,2-dioxyacetic acid) reacts with triphenylphosphine (1:4 mol ratio) to give the colourless copper(I) complex [Cu(η1-bdoaH)(PPh3)3] (1) in good yield. The X-ray crystal structure of the complex shows the copper atom at the centre of a distorted tetrahedron, and is ligated by the phosphorus atoms of the three triphenylphosphines and one carboxylate oxygen atom of the bdoaH− ligand. Significant intermolecular hydrogen-bonding exists between the pendant carboxylate OH function of one molecule and the uncoordinated “ketonic” oxygen of a neighbouring molecule. Complex 1 is non-conducting in chloroform but ionizes readily in acetonitrile. The cyclic voltammogram of an acetonitrile solution of 1 shows a single irreversible anodic peak for the oxidation of the PPh3 ligands and the copper(I) centre, and a single irreversible cathodic peak for the reduction of the bdoaH− ion. IR and mass spectral data for 1 are given.

[Cu2(μO2CCH3)4(H2O)2], [CuCO3·Cu(OH)2], [CoSO4·7H2O], [Co((+)-tartrate)], and [FeSO4·7H2O] react with excess racemic (±)- 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-diyl hydrogen phosphate {(±)-PhosH} to give mononuclear CuII, CoII and FeII products. The cobalt product, [Co(CH3OH)4(H2O)2]((+)-Phos)((−)-Phos) ·2CH3OH·H2O (7), has been identified by X-ray diffraction. The high-spin, octahedral CoII atom is ligated by four equatorial methanol molecules and two axial water molecules. A (+)- and a (−)-Phos− ion are associated with each molecule of the complex but are not coordinated to the metal centre. For the other CoII, CuII and FeII samples of similar formulation to (7) it is also thought that the Phos− ions are not bonded directly to the metal. When some of the CuII and CoII samples are heated under high vacuum there is evidence that the Phos− ions are coordinated directly to the metals in the products.

The coordination chemistry of the ligand N-thiazol-2-yl-toluenesulfonamidate towards the copper(II) ion has been investigated using an electrochemical synthesis method. The X-ray structure of this complex was elucidated and is discussed. The compound crystallised in the monoclinic crystal system, P2(1)/c space group with a = 17.3888(9), b = 16.3003(9), c = 18.3679(9) angstrom and beta = 114.3640(10)degrees. Four bidentate sulfathiazolato anions bridge two metal centers in a paddle-wheel fashion, with the nitrogen atoms as donors to give a dimeric species with a Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distance of 2.7859(5) angstrom.
