The photocatalytic degradation of nitrobenzene and substituted nitrobenzenes under UV exposure was investigated with combustion synthesized nano-TiO2 and commercial TiO2 catalyst, Degussa P-25. The experimental data indicated that the photodegradation kinetics was first order. The photocatalytic degradation rates were considerably higher when catalyzed with combustion synthesized TiO2 compared to that of Degussa P-25. The degradation rate coefficients followed the order: 1-chloro,14-dinitrobenzene similar or equal to 4-nitrophenot > 2-nitrophenol > 1-chloro.4-nitrobenzene > 3-niti-ophenol > 2,4-dinitrophenol > 1-chloro,2-nitrobenzene > nitrobenzene > 1,3-dinitrobenzene. Plausible mechanisms and reasons for the observation of the above order are discussed.

Gd2O3:Eu3+ (0.5-8.0 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared by low temperature solution combustion method using metal nitrates as oxidizers and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as a fuel. The phosphors are well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. PXRD patterns of as-formed and calcined (800 degrees C, 3 h) Gd2O3 powders exhibit monoclinic phase with mean crystallite sizes ranging from 20 to 50 nm. Eu3+ doping changes the structure from monoclinic to mixed phase of monoclinic and cubic. SEM micrographs shows the products are foamy, agglomerated and fluffy in nature due to the large amount of gases liberated during combustion reaction. Upon 254 nm excitation the photoluminescence of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ particles show red emission at 611 nm corresponding to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition. It is observed that PL intensity increases with calcination temperature. This might be attributed to better crystallization and eliminates the defects, which serve as centers of non-radiative relaxation for nanomaterials. It is observed that the optical energy gap (E-g) is widened with increase Eu3+ content. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The combustion technique produces ionically dispersed Ag on a nano-crystalline CeO2 surface. The catalysts thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Catalytic properties towards NO reduction, CO and hydrocarbon oxidation have been investigated using the temperature programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. These results are compared with alpha-Al2O3 supported finely divided Ag metal particles synthesized by the same method. Both oxidation and reduction reactions over Ag/CeO2 have been observed to occur at lower temperatures compared to Ag/Al2O3. The rate and turnover frequency of the NO+CO reaction over 1% Ag/CeO2 are 56.3 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) and 0.97 s(-1) at 225 degrees C respectively. Activation energy (E-a) values are 71 and 67 kJ mol(-1) for CO+O-2 and NO+CO reactions, respectively, over 1% Ag/CeO2 catalyst.

The effect of tri- and tetramethylammonium perchlorates (MAP-3 and MAP-4) on the burning rate of ammonium perchlorate (AP) based propellants has been determined at various pressures. Both additives increase the burning rate; however, MAP-3 has a moderate effect, whereas MAP-4 has a rather large effect. To explain the results, the thermal decomposition and calorimetric values of the propellants having these additives have been examined. Compound MAP-3 affects the thermal decomposition rate considerably, whereas MAP-4 has virtually no effect on the decomposition rate. The contrasting effects of MAP-4 on decomposition and burning rate suggest that the enhancement of burning rate may be due to the catalysis of gas-phase reactions. Further, detailed differences between behaviour of MAP-3, and MAP-4 appear to be attributable to the melting and low-temperature exotherm of MAP-3 and nonmelting and high-temperature exotherm of MAP-4.

Addition of trimethylammonium perchlorate to potassium perchlorate (KP) catalyzes its thermal decomposition. However, although the additive sensitises KP-PU propellant decomposition, its combustion is desensitised. The observed effects have been explained in terms of the role played by the early formation of potassium chloride.

Aluminium-silicon alloy, an important material used for the construction of internal combustion engines, exhibit pressure induced distinct regimes of wear and friction; ultra-mild and mild. In this work the alloy is slid lubricated against a spherical steel pin at contact pressures characteristic of the two test regimes, at a very low sliding velocity. In both cases, the friction is controlled at the initial stages of sliding by the abrasion of the steel pin by the protruding silicon particles of the disc. The generation of nascent steel chips helps to breakdown the additive in the oil by a cationic exchange that yields chemical products of benefits to the tribology. The friction is initially controlled by abrasion, but the chemical products gain increasing importance in controlling friction with sliding time. After long times, depending on contact pressure, the chemical products determine sliding friction exclusively. In this paper, a host of mechanical and spectroscopic techniques are used to identify and characterize mechanical damage and chemical changes. Although the basic dissipation mechanisms are the same in the two regimes, the matrix remains practically unworn in the low-pressure ultra-mild wear regime. In the higher pressure regime at long sliding times a small but finite wear rate prevails. Incipient plasticity in the subsurface controls the mechanism of wear.

We report the rapid solution combustion synthesis and characterization of Ag-substituted LaMnO3 phases at relatively low temperature using oxalyl dihydrazide, as fuel. Structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. While the parent LaMnO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, the Ag-substituted compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry. On increasing Ag-content, unit cell volume and Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases. The Fourier transform infra red spectrum shows two absorption bands corresponding to Mn-O stretching vibration (v(s) mode) and Mn-O-Mn deformation vibration (v(b) mode) around 600 cm(-1) and 400 cm(-1) for the compositions x = 0.0, 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal that composition-controlled metal to insulator transition, with the maximum metal to insulator being 280 K for the composition La0.75Ag0.25MnO3. Increase in magnetic moment was observed with increase in Ag-content. The maximum magnetic moment of 35 emu/g was observed for the composition La0.80Ag0.20MnO3. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Unsaturated clays are subject to osmotic suction gradients in geoenvironmental engineering applications and it therefore becomes important to understand the effect of these chemical concentration gradients on soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs). This paper brings out the influence of induced osmotic suction gradient on the wetting SWCCs of compacted clay specimens inundated with sodium chloride solutions/distilled water at vertical stress of 6.25 kPa in oedometer cells. The experimental results illustrate that variations in initial osmotic suction difference induce different magnitudes of osmotic induced consolidation and osmotic consolidation strains thereby impacting the wetting SWCCs and equilibrium water contents of identically compacted clay specimens. Osmotic suction induced by chemical concentration gradients between reservoir salt solution and soil-water can be treated as an equivalent net stress component, (p(pi)) that decreases the swelling strains of unsaturated specimens from reduction in microstructural and macrostructural swelling components. The direction of osmotic flow affects the matric SWCCs. Unsaturated specimens experiencing osmotic induced consolidation and osmotic consolidation develop lower equilibrium water content than specimens experiencing osmotic swelling during the wetting path. The findings of the study illustrate the need to incorporate the influence of osmotic suction in determination of the matric SWCCs.
