To determine whether genetic factors influence frontal lobe degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the laminar distributions of diffuse, primitive, and classic β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide deposits were compared in early-onset familial AD (EO-FAD) linked to mutations of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) or presenilin 1 (PSEN1) gene, late-onset familial AD (LO-FAD), and sporadic AD (SAD). The influence of apolipoprotein E (Apo E) genotype on laminar distribution was also studied. In the majority of FAD and SAD cases, maximum density of the diffuse and primitive Aβ deposits occurred in the upper cortical layers, whereas the distribution of the classic Aβ deposits was more variable, either occurring in the lower layers, or a double-peaked (bimodal) distribution was present, density peaks occurring in upper and lower layers. The cortical layer at which maximum density of Aβ deposits occurred and maximum density were similar in EO-FAD, LO-FAD and SAD. In addition, there were no significant differences in distributions in cases expressing Apo E ε4 alleles compared with cases expressing the ε2 or ε3 alleles. These results suggest that gene expression had relatively little effect on the laminar distribution of Aβ deposits in the frontal lobe of the AD cases studied. Hence, the pattern of frontal lobe degeneration in AD is similar regardless of whether it is associated with APP and PSEN1, mutation, allelic variation in Apo E, or with SAD.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an important neurodegenerative disorder causing visual problems in the elderly population. The pathology of AD includes the deposition in the brain of abnormal aggregates of β-amyloid (Aβ) in the form of senile plaques (SP) and abnormally phosphorylated tau in the form of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). A variety of visual problems have been reported in patients with AD including loss of visual acuity (VA), colour vision and visual fields; changes in pupillary responses to mydriatics, defects in fixation and in smooth and saccadic eye movements; changes in contrast sensitivity and in visual evoked potentials (VEP); and disturbances in complex visual tasks such as reading, visuospatial function, and in the naming and identification of objects. In addition, pathological changes have been observed to affect the eye, visual pathway, and visual cortex in AD. To better understand degeneration of the visual cortex in AD, the laminar distribution of the SP and NFT was studied in visual areas V1 and V2 in 18 cases of AD which varied in disease onset and duration. In area V1, the mean density of SP and NFT reached a maximum in lamina III and in laminae II and III respectively. In V2, mean SP density was maximal in laminae III and IV and NFT density in laminae II and III. The densities of SP in laminae I of V1 and NFT in lamina IV of V2 were negatively correlated with patient age. No significant correlations were observed in any cortical lamina between the density of NFT and disease onset or duration. However, in area V2, the densities of SP in lamina II and lamina V were negatively correlated with disease duration and disease onset respectively. In addition, there were several positive correlations between the densities of SP and NFT in V1 with those in area V2. The data suggest: (1) NFT pathology is greater in area V2 than V1, (2) laminae II/III of V1 and V2 are most affected by the pathology, (3) the formation of SP and NFT in V1 and V2 are interconnected, and (4) the pathology may spread between visual areas via the feed-forward short cortico-cortical connections. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. We study the radiation build-up in laminar and turbulent generation regimes in quasi-CW Raman fiber laser. We found the resulted spectral shape and generation type is defined by the total spectral broadening/narrowing balance over laser cavity round-trip, which is substantially different in different regimes starting from first round-trips of the radiation build-up. In turbulent regime, the steady-state is reached only after a few round-trips, while in the laminar regime the laser approaches the equilibrium spectrum shape asymptotically.

Loss of coherence with increasing excitation amplitudes and spatial size modulation is a fundamental problem in designing Raman fiber lasers. While it is known that ramping up laser pump power increases the amplitude of stochastic excitations, such higher energy inputs can also lead to a transition from a linearly stable coherent laminar regime to a non-desirable disordered turbulent state. This report presents a new statistical methodology, based on first passage statistics, that classifies lasing regimes in Raman fiber lasers, thereby leading to a fast and highly accurate identification of a strong instability leading to a laminar-turbulent phase transition through a self-consistently defined order parameter. The results have been consistent across a wide range of pump power values, heralding a breakthrough in the non-invasive analysis of fiber laser dynamics.

We implement conditional moment closure (CMC) for simulation of chemical reactions in laminar chaotic flows. The CMC approach predicts the expected concentration of reactive species, conditional upon the concentration of a corresponding nonreactive scalar. Closure is obtained by neglecting the difference between the local concentration of the reactive scalar and its conditional average. We first use a Monte Carlo method to calculate the evolution of the moments of a conserved scalar; we then reconstruct the corresponding probability density function and dissipation rate. Finally, the concentrations of the reactive scalars are determined. The results are compared (and show excellent agreement) with full numerical simulations of the reaction processes in a chaotic laminar flow. A systematic study was conducted to elucidate the effects of acoustic perturbations on laminar diffusion line-flames and the conditions required to cause acoustically-driven extinction. Flames were produced from the fuels n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, and JP-8, using fuel-laden wicks. The wicks were housed inside of a burner whose geometry produced flames that approximated a two dimensional flame sheet. The acoustics utilized ranged in frequency between 30-50 Hz and acoustic pressures between 5-50 Pa. The unperturbed mass loss rate and flame height of the alkanes were studied, and they were found to scale in a linear manner consistent with Burke-Schumann. The mass loss rate of hexane-fueled flames experiencing acoustic perturbations was then studied. It was found that the strongest influence on the mass loss rate was the magnitude of oscillatory air movement experienced by the flame. Finally, acoustic perturbations were imposed on flames using all fuels to determine acoustic extinction criterion. Using the data collected, a model was developed which characterized the acoustic conditions required to cause flame extinction. The model was based on the ratio of an acoustic Nusselt Number to the Spalding B Number of the fuel, and it was found that at the minimum speaker power required to cause extinction this ratio was a constant. Furthermore, it was found that at conditions where the ratio was below this constant, a flame could still exist; at conditions where the ratio was greater than or equal to this constant, flame extinction always occurred.

In situ hybridization histochemistry and immunocytochemistry were used to examine lamina- and cell-specific expression of glutamate receptor (GluR) mRNAs and polypeptide subunits in motor and somatosensory cortex of macaque monkeys. Radioactive complementary RNA (cRNA) probes were prepared from cDNAs specific for α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxozolepropionate (AMPA)/kainate (GluR1-GluR4), kainate (GluR5-GluR7), and N-methylD-aspartate (NMDA; NR1, NR2A-NR2D) receptor subunits. AMPA/kainate and NR1, NR2A, and NR2B receptor transcripts show higher expression than other transcripts. All transcripts show lamina-specific patterns of distribution. GluR2 and GluR4 mRNAs show higher expression than do GluR1 and GluR3 mRNAs. GluR6 transcript expression is higher than that of GluR5 and GluR7. NR1 mRNA expression is much higher than that of NR2 mRNAs. NR2C subunit expression is very low except for a very distinct band of high expression in layer IV of area 3b. Immunocytochemistry, using subunit-specific antisera and double labeling for calbindin, parvalbumin, or α type II Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMKII-α), allowed identification of cell types expressing different subunit genes. GluR1 and GluR5/6/7 immunoreactivity is found in both pyramidal cells and gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) cells; GluR2/3 immunoreactivity is preferentially found in pyramidal cells, whereas GluR4 immunoreactivity is largely restricted to GABA cells; NMDA receptor subunit immunoreactivity is far greater in excitatory cells than in GABA cells. The density of expression of AMPA/kainate, kainate, and NMDA receptor subunit mRNAs differed within and across the architectonic fields of sensory-motor cortex. This finding and the lamina- and cell-specific patterns of expression suggest assembly of functional receptors from different arrangements of available subunits in specific neuronal populations.

The Subaxial Injury Classification (SLIC) system and severity score has been developed to help surgeons in the decision-making process of treatment of subaxial cervical spine injuries. A detailed description of all potential scored injures of the SLIC is lacking. We performed a systematic review in the PubMed database from 2007 to 2014 to describe the relationship between the scored injuries in the SLIC and their eventual treatment according to the system score. Patients with an SLIC of 1-3 points (conservative treatment) are neurologically intact with the spinous process, laminar or small facet fractures. Patients with compression and burst fractures who are neurologically intact are also treated nonsurgically. Patients with an SLIC of 4 points may have an incomplete spinal cord injury such as a central cord syndrome, compression injuries with incomplete neurologic deficits and burst fractures with complete neurologic deficits. SLIC of 5-10 points includes distraction and rotational injuries, traumatic disc herniation in the setting of a neurological deficit and burst fractures with an incomplete neurologic deficit. The SLIC injury severity score can help surgeons guide fracture treatment. Knowledge of the potential scored injures and their relationships with the SLIC are of paramount importance for spine surgeons who treated subaxial cervical spine injuries.

This study evaluated the sealing ability of different lengths of remaining root canal filling and post space preparation against coronal leakage of Enterococcus faecalis. Forty-one roots of maxillary incisors were biomechanically prepared, maintaining standardized canal diameter at the middle and coronal thirds. The roots were autoclaved and all subsequent steps were undertaken in a laminar flow chamber. The canals of 33 roots were obturated with AH Plus sealer and gutta-percha. The root canal fillings were reduced to 3 predetermined lengths (n=11): G1=6 mm, G2=4 mm and G3=2 mm. The remaining roots served as positive and negative controls. Bacterial leakage test apparatuses were fabricated with the roots attached to Eppendorf tubes keeping 2 mm of apex submerged in BHI in glass flasks. The specimens received an E. faecalis inoculum of 1 x 107 cfu/mL every 3 days and were observed for bacterial leakage daily during 60 days. Data were submitted to ANOVA, Tukey's test and Fisher's test. At 60 days, G1 (6 mm) and G2 (4 mm) presented statistically similar results (p>0.05) (54.4% of specimens with bacterial leakage) and both groups differed significantly (p<0.01) from G3 (2 mm), which presented 100% of specimens with E. faecalis leakage. It may be concluded that the shortest endodontic obturation remnant leaked considerably more than the other lengths, although none of the tested conditions avoids coronal leakage of E. faecalis.

A new species of thorny catfish (family Doradidae) is described as a member of genus Leptodoras Boulenger by having a modified oral hood and first gill arch with enlarged accessory lamellae extending well onto medial face of gill filaments. The new species is distinguished by three characteristics unique within Leptodoras: gas bladder moderately sized (not reduced) with simple walls (diverticula absent), and paired bony capsules on anteriormost vertebrae reduced to paired cup-like laminar ossifications separated by triangular septum. The new species was discovered from material recently collected in the Tapajós basin at Serra do Cachimbo and in the headwaters of rio Xingu. The species description is supplemented by a detailed osteological description, discussion on its placement among congeners, and a re-evaluation of the diagnosis of Leptodoras and its relationships with sister taxon Anduzedoras oxyrhynchus. In addition, the distributions of several species of Leptodoras are expanded based on recent collecting efforts and identification of museum specimens not previously studied.
