One-pot template condensation of CCl3C=N with ammonia on a metal source [MnCl2 center dot 4H(2)O, FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O or Co(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O] in DMSO led to the formation of tris(2,4-bis(trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazapentadienato)-M(III) complexes, [M(NH=C(CCl3)NC(CCl3)=-NH}(3)]center dot n(CH3)(2)SO [M = Mn, n = 1 (1); M = Fe, n = 2 (2); M = Co, n = 2 (3)1, which were characterized using elemental analysis, and IR, ESI-MS and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The role of inter- and intramolecular non-covalent halogen and hydrogen bonds in the synthesis of 1-3 is discussed. It is shown that the crystal ionic radii of the metal ions [68.5 (Co) < 69 (Fe) < 72 (Mn), pm] are related to the corresponding Cl center dot center dot center dot Cl distances [3.178 (3) > 3.155 (2) > 3.133 (1) Al. Compounds 1-3 and the related di(triazapentadienato)-Cu(v) complex [Cu(NH=C(CCl3)NC(CCl3)=NH}2]center dot 2(CH3)(2)SO (4) act as catalyst precursors for the additive-free microwave (MW) assisted homogeneous oxidation of 1-phenylethanol with tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), leading to the formation of acetophenone with yields up to 99% and TONs up to 5.0 x 10(3) after 1 h of low power (10 W) MW irradiation.

The water-soluble copper(II) complex [Cu(H2R)(HL)]center dot H2O (1) was prepared by reaction of copper(II) nitrate hydrate with (E)-2-(((1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene)amino) benzenesulfonic acid (H2L) and diethanolamine (H3R). It was characterized by IR and ESI-MS spectroscopies, elemental and X-ray crystal structural analyses. 1 shows a high catalytic activity for the solvent-free microwave (MW) assisted oxidation of 1-phenylethanol with tert-butylhydroperoxide, leading, in the presence of TEMPO, to yields up to 85% (TON = 850) in a remarkably short reaction time (15 min, with the corresponding TOE value of 3.40 x 10(3) h(-1)) under low power (25W) MW irradiation. The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol with 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane in the presence of MnCl2 in a 1:1:2 molar ratio in methanol afforded a dinuclear -chlorido-bridged manganese(II) complex of the macrocyclic [2+2] condensation product (H2L), namely, [Mn2Cl2(H2L)(HL)]Cl center dot 3H(2)O (1). The latter afforded a new compound, namely, [Mn2Cl2(H2L)(2)][MnCl4]center dot 4CH(3)CN center dot 0.5CHCl(3 center dot)0.4H(2)O (2), after recrystallisation from 1:1 CHCl3/CH3CN. The co-existence of the free and complexed azomethine groups, phenolato donors, mu-chlorido bridges, and the disiloxane unit were well evidenced by ESI mass spectrometry and FTIR spectroscopy and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic measurements revealed an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two high-spin (S = 5/2, g = 2) manganese(II) ions through the mu-chlorido bridging ligands. The electrochemical behaviour of 1 and 2 has been studied, and details of their redox properties are reported. Both compounds act as catalysts or catalyst precursors in the solvent-free low-power microwave-assisted oxidation of selected secondary alcohols, for example, 1-phenylethanol, cyclohexanol, 2- and 3-octanol, to the corresponding ketones in the absence of solvent. The highest yield of 72% was achieved for 1-phenylethanol by using a maximum of 1% molar ratio of catalyst relative to substrate.

The Ni-II and Zn-II complexes [MCl(Tpms(Ph))] (Tpms(Ph) = SO3C(pz(Ph))(3), pz = pyrazolyl; M = Ni 2 or Zn 3) and the Cu-II complex [CuCl(Tpms(Ph))(H2O)] (4) have been prepared by treatment of the lithium salt of the sterically demanding and coordination flexible tris(3-phenyl-1-pyrazolyl)methanesulfonate (Tpms(Ph))(-) (1) with the respective metal chlorides. The (Tpms(Ph))(-) ligand shows the N-3 or N2O coordination modes in 2 and 3 or in 4, respectively. Upon reaction of 2 and 3 with Ag(CF3SO3) in acetonitrile the complexes [M(Tpms(Ph))-(MeCN)](CF3SO3) (M = Ni 5 or Zn 6, respectively) were formed. The compounds were obtained in good yields and characterized by analytic and spectral (IR, H-1 and C-13{H-1} NMR, ESI-MS) data, density functional theory (DFT) methods and {for 4 and [(Bu4N)-Bu-n](Tpms(Ph)) (7), the tatter obtained upon Li+ replacement by [(Bu4N)-Bu-n](+) in Li(Tpms(Ph))} by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Zn-II and Cu-II complexes (3 and 4, respectively) act as efficient catalyst precursors for the diastereoselective nitroaldol reaction of benzaldehydes and nitroethane to the corresponding beta-nitroalkanols (up to 99% yield, at room temperature) with diastereoselectivity towards the formation of the anti isomer, whereas the Ni-II complex 2 only shows a modest catalytic activity.

The reactions between 4'-phenyl-terpyridine (L) and nitrate, acetate or chloride Cu(II) salts led to the formation of [Cu(NO3)(2)L] (1), [Cu(OCOCH3)(2)L]center dot CH2Cl2 (2 center dot CH2Cl2)and [CuCl2L]center dot[Cu(Cl)(mu-Cl)L](2) (3), respectively. Upon dissolving 1 in mixtures of DMSO-MeOH or EtOH-DMF the compounds [Cu(H2O){OS(CH3)(2)}L]-(NO3)(2) (4) and [Cu(HO)(CH3CH2OH)L](NO3) (5) were obtained, in this order. Reaction of 3 with AgSO3CF3 led to [CuCl(OSO2CF3)L] (6). The compounds were characterized by ESI-MS, IR, elemental analysis, electrochemical techniques and, for 2-6, also by single crystal X-ray diffraction. They undergo, by cyclic voltammetry, two single-electron irreversible reductions assigned to Cu(II) -> Cu(I)and Cu(I) -> Cu(0) and, for those of the same structural type, the reduction potential appears to correlate with the summation of the values of the Lever electrochemical EL ligand parameter, which is reported for the first time for copper complexes. Complexes 1-6 in combination with TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl radical) can exhibit a high catalytic activity, under mild conditions and in alkaline aqueous solution, for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols. Molar yields up to 94% (based on the alcohol) with TON values up to 320 were achieved after 22 h.

This work concerns recent advances (since 2005) in the oxidative functionalization of alkanes, alkenes and ketones, under mild conditions, catalyzed by homoscorpionate tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane metal complexes. The main types of such homogeneous or supported catalysts are classified, and the critical analysis of the most efficient catalytic systems in the different reactions is presented. These reactions include the mild oxidation of alkanes (typically cyclohexane as a model substrate) with hydrogen peroxide (into alkyl hydroperoxides, alcohols, and ketones), the hydrocarboxylation of gaseous alkanes (with carbon monoxide and potassium peroxodisulfate) into the corresponding Cn+1 carboxylic acids, as well as the epoxidation of alkenes and the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of linear and cyclic ketones with hydrogen peroxide into the corresponding esters and lactones. Effects of various reaction parameters are highlighted and the preferable requirements for a prospective homogeneous or supported C-scorpionate-M-based catalyst in oxidative transformations of those substrates are identified. Desilication and a combination of alkaline followed by acid treatment were applied to MCM-22 zeolite using two different base concentrations. The samples were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and low temperature N-2 adsorption. The acidity of the samples was study through pyridine adsorption followed by FTIR spectroscopy and by the analyses of the hydroxyl region. The catalytic behaviour, anticipated by the effect of post-synthesis treatments on the acidity and space available inside the two internal pore systems was evaluated by using the model reaction of m-xylene transformation. The generation of mesoporosity was achieved upon alkaline treatment with 0.05 M NaOH solution and practically no additional gain was obtained when the more concentrate solution, 0.1 M, was used. Instead, Al extraction takes place along with Si, as shown by Si-29 and Al-27 MAS-NMR data, followed by Al deposition as extraframework species. Samples submitted to alkaline plus acid treatments present distinct behaviour. When the lowest NaOH solution was used no relevant effect was observed on the textural characteristics. Additionally, when the acid treatment was performed on an already fragilized MCM-22 structure, due to previous desilication with 0.1 M NaOH solution, the extraction of Al from both internal pore systems promotes their interconnection, evolving from a 2-D to a 3-D porous structure. This transformation has a marked effect in the catalytic behaviour, allowing an increase of m-xylene conversion as a consequence of an easier and faster molecular traffic in the 3-D structure. On the other hand, the continuous deposition of extraframework Al species inside the pores leads to a shape selective effect that privileges the formation of the more valuable isomer p-xylene.

The dynamics of catalytic networks have been widely studied over the last decades because of their implications in several fields like prebiotic evolution, virology, neural networks, immunology or ecology. One of the most studied mathematical bodies for catalytic networks was initially formulated in the context of prebiotic evolution, by means of the hypercycle theory. The hypercycle is a set of self-replicating species able to catalyze other replicator species within a cyclic architecture. Hypercyclic organization might arise from a quasispecies as a way to increase the informational containt surpassing the so-called error threshold. The catalytic coupling between replicators makes all the species to behave like a single and coherent evolutionary multimolecular unit. The inherent nonlinearities of catalytic interactions are responsible for the emergence of several types of dynamics, among them, chaos. In this article we begin with a brief review of the hypercycle theory focusing on its evolutionary implications as well as on different dynamics associated to different types of small catalytic networks. Then we study the properties of chaotic hypercycles with error-prone replication with symbolic dynamics theory, characterizing, by means of the theory of topological Markov chains, the topological entropy and the periods of the orbits of unimodal-like iterated maps obtained from the strange attractor. We will focus our study on some key parameters responsible for the structure of the catalytic network: mutation rates, autocatalytic and cross-catalytic interactions.

The antigenicity of promastigotes of Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis (L. b.braziliensis) treated with 1% sodium desoxycholate in 10 mM Tris-Hcl pH 8.2 was analysed by immunoblot using as probes sera from American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL), American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), schistosomiasis, malaria and Chagas' disease. The ACL sera reacted constantly with a 60 kD band. No reactivity to this protein was observed with sera from the other diseases above mentioned indicating that the 60 kD protein may be used in serodiagnosis for ACL.

This work reports on the results of double immunodiffusion (ID), counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE), complement fixation (CF) and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) techniques in the serodiagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis. The study was undertaken on four groups of individuals: 46 patients with untreated paracoccidioidomycosis, 22 patients with other deep mycoses, 30 with other infectious diseases (tuberculosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis) and 47 blood donors as negative controls. Data were obtained using Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigens, i.e.,a yeast culture filtrate for ID, CIE and CF, and a yeast cell suspension for IIF. The sensitivity, specificity and efficiency values were measured according to GALEN & GAMBINO8.The gel precipitation tests (ID and CIE) showed the greatest sensitivity (91.3 and 95.6%, respectively), maximum specificity (100%) and the highest efficiency values when compared to the CF and IIF tests.

The benzoyl hydrazone based dimeric dicopper(II) complex [Cu2(R)(CH3O)(NO3)]2(CH3O)2 (R-Cu2+), recently reported by us, catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of catechols (catechol (S1), 3,5- itertiarybutylcatechol (S2) and 3-nitrocatechol (S3)) to the corresponding quinones (catecholase like activity), as shown by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy in methanol/HEPES buffer (pH 8.2) medium at 25 C. The highest activity is observed for the substituted catechol (S2) with the electron donor tertiary butyl group, resulting in a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 1.13 103 h1. The complex R-Cu2+ also exhibits a good catalytic activity in the oxidation (without added solvent) of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone by But OOH under low power (10 W) microwave (MW) irradiation. 2014 Elsevier B.V. The catalytic peroxidative oxidation (with H2O2) of cyclohexane in an ionic liquid (IL) using the tetracopper(II) complex [(CuL)2(μ4-O,O′,O′′,O′′′-CDC)]2·2H2O [HL = 2-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)benzenesulfonic acid, CDC = cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylate] as a catalyst is reported. Significant improvements on the catalytic performance, in terms of product yield (up to 36%), TON (up to 529), reaction time, selectivity towards cyclohexanone and easy recycling (negligible loss in activity after three consecutive runs), are observed using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate as the chosen IL instead of a molecular organic solvent including the commonly used acetonitrile. The catalytic behaviors in the IL and in different molecular solvents are discussed.

The iron(III) complexes [H(EtOH)][FeCl2(L)(2)] (1), [H(2)bipy](1/2)[FeCl2(L)(2)].DMF (2) and [FeCl2(L)(2,2'-bipy)] (3) (L = 3-amino-2-pyrazinecarboxylate; H(2)bipy = doubly protonated 4,4'-bipyridine; 2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, DMF = dimethylformamide) have been synthesized and fully characterized by IR, elemental and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, as well as by electrochemical methods. Complexes 1 and 2 have similar mononuclear structures containing different guest molecules (protonated ethanol for 1 and doubly protonated 4,4'-bipyridine for 2) in their lattices, whereas the complex 3 has one 3-amino-2-pyrazinecarboxylate and a 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. They show a high catalytic activity for the low power (10 W) solvent-free microwave assisted peroxidative oxidation of 1-phenylethanol, leading, in the presence of TEMPO, to quantitative yields of acetophenone [TOFs up to 8.1 x 10(3) h(-1), (3)] after 1 h. Moreover, the catalysts are of easy recovery and reused, at least for four consecutive cycles, maintaining 83 % of the initial activity and concomitant rather high selectivity. 3-Amino-2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid is used to synthesize three new iron(III) complexes which act as heterogeneous catalysts for the solvent-free microwave-assisted peroxidative oxidation of 1-phenylethanol.
