Despite the several issues faced in the past, the evolutionary trend of silicon has kept its constant pace. Today an ever increasing number of cores is integrated onto the same die. Unfortunately, the extraordinary performance achievable by the many-core paradigm is limited by several factors. Memory bandwidth limitation, combined with inefficient synchronization mechanisms, can severely overcome the potential computation capabilities. Moreover, the huge HW/SW design space requires accurate and flexible tools to perform architectural explorations and validation of design choices. In this thesis we focus on the aforementioned aspects: a flexible and accurate Virtual Platform has been developed, targeting a reference many-core architecture. Such tool has been used to perform architectural explorations, focusing on instruction caching architecture and hybrid HW/SW synchronization mechanism. Beside architectural implications, another issue of embedded systems is considered: energy efficiency. Near Threshold Computing is a key research area in the Ultra-Low-Power domain, as it promises a tenfold improvement in energy efficiency compared to super-threshold operation and it mitigates thermal bottlenecks. The physical implications of modern deep sub-micron technology are severely limiting performance and reliability of modern designs. Reliability becomes a major obstacle when operating in NTC, especially memory operation becomes unreliable and can compromise system correctness. In the present work a novel hybrid memory architecture is devised to overcome reliability issues and at the same time improve energy efficiency by means of aggressive voltage scaling when allowed by workload requirements. Variability is another great drawback of near-threshold operation. The greatly increased sensitivity to threshold voltage variations in today a major concern for electronic devices. We introduce a variation-tolerant extension of the baseline many-core architecture. By means of micro-architectural knobs and a lightweight runtime control unit, the baseline architecture becomes dynamically tolerant to variations.

Data deduplication describes a class of approaches that reduce the storage capacity needed to store data or the amount of data that has to be transferred over a network. These approaches detect coarse-grained redundancies within a data set, e.g. a file system, and remove them.rnrnOne of the most important applications of data deduplication are backup storage systems where these approaches are able to reduce the storage requirements to a small fraction of the logical backup data size.rnThis thesis introduces multiple new extensions of so-called fingerprinting-based data deduplication. It starts with the presentation of a novel system design, which allows using a cluster of servers to perform exact data deduplication with small chunks in a scalable way.rnrnAfterwards, a combination of compression approaches for an important, but often over- looked, data structure in data deduplication systems, so called block and file recipes, is introduced. Using these compression approaches that exploit unique properties of data deduplication systems, the size of these recipes can be reduced by more than 92% in all investigated data sets. As file recipes can occupy a significant fraction of the overall storage capacity of data deduplication systems, the compression enables significant savings.rnrnA technique to increase the write throughput of data deduplication systems, based on the aforementioned block and file recipes, is introduced next. The novel Block Locality Caching (BLC) uses properties of block and file recipes to overcome the chunk lookup disk bottleneck of data deduplication systems. This chunk lookup disk bottleneck either limits the scalability or the throughput of data deduplication systems. The presented BLC overcomes the disk bottleneck more efficiently than existing approaches. Furthermore, it is shown that it is less prone to aging effects.rnrnFinally, it is investigated if large HPC storage systems inhibit redundancies that can be found by fingerprinting-based data deduplication. Over 3 PB of HPC storage data from different data sets have been analyzed. In most data sets, between 20 and 30% of the data can be classified as redundant. According to these results, future work in HPC storage systems should further investigate how data deduplication can be integrated into future HPC storage systems.rnrnThis thesis presents important novel work in different area of data deduplication re- search.

Using multicast communication in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is an efficient way to disseminate the same data (from one sender) to multiple receivers, e.g., transmitting code updates to a group of sensor nodes. Due to the nature of code update traffic a multicast protocol has to support bulky traffic and end-to-end reliability. We are interested in an energy-efficient multicast protocol due to the limited resources of wireless sensor nodes. Current data dissemination schemes do not fulfill the above requirements. In order to close the gap, we designed and implemented the SNOMC (Sensor Node Overlay Multicast) protocol. It is an overlay multicast protocol, which supports reliable, time-efficient, and energy-efficient data dissemination of bulky data from one sender to many receivers. To ensure end-to-end reliability, SNOMC uses a NACK-based reliability mechanism with different caching strategies.

Since the appearance of downsized and simplified TCP/IP stacks, single nodes from Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become directly accessible from the Internet with commonly used networking tools and applications (e.g., Telnet or SMTP). However, TCP has been shown to perform poorly in wireless networks, especially across multiple wireless hops. This paper examines TCP performance optimizations based on distributed caching and local retransmission strategies of intermediate nodes in a TCP connection, and proposes extended techniques to these strategies. The paper studies the impact of different radio duty-cycling MAC protocols on the end-to-end TCP performance when using the proposed TCP optimization strategies in an extensive experimental evaluation on a real-world sensor network testbed.

The ability to make scientific findings reproducible is increasingly important in areas where substantive results are the product of complex statistical computations. Reproducibility can allow others to verify the published findings and conduct alternate analyses of the same data. A question that arises naturally is how can one conduct and distribute reproducible research? This question is relevant from the point of view of both the authors who want to make their research reproducible and readers who want to reproduce relevant findings reported in the scientific literature. We present a framework in which reproducible research can be conducted and distributed via cached computations and describe specific tools for both authors and readers. As a prototype implementation we introduce three software packages written in the R language. The cacheSweave and stashR packages together provide tools for caching computational results in a key-value style database which can be published to a public repository for readers to download. The SRPM package provides tools for generating and interacting with "shared reproducibility packages" (SRPs) which can facilitate the distribution of the data and code. As a case study we demonstrate the use of the toolkit on a national study of air pollution exposure and mortality.

We present a collection of R packages for conducting and distributing reproducible research using R, Sweave, and LaTeX. The collection consists of the cacheSweave, stashR, and SRPM packages which allow for the caching of computations in Sweave documents and the distribution of those cached computations via remotely accessible key-value databases. We describe the caching mechanism used by the cacheSweave package and tools that we have developed for authors and readers for the purposes of creating and interacting with reproducible documents.

The stashR package (a Set of Tools for Administering SHared Repositories) for R implements a simple key-value style database where character string keys are associated with data values. The key-value databases can be either stored locally on the user's computer or accessed remotely via the Internet. Methods specific to the stashR package allow users to share data repositories or access previously created remote data repositories. In particular, methods are available for the S4 classes localDB and remoteDB to insert, retrieve, or delete data from the database as well as to synchronize local copies of the data to the remote version of the database. Users efficiently access information from a remote database by retrieving only the data files indexed by user-specified keys and caching this data in a local copy of the remote database. The local and remote counterparts of the stashR package offer the potential to enhance reproducible research by allowing users of Sweave to cache their R computations for a research paper in a localDB database. This database can then be stored on the Internet as a remoteDB database. When readers of the research paper wish to reproduce the computations involved in creating a specific figure or calculating a specific numeric value, they can access the remoteDB database and obtain the R objects involved in the computation.

The article focuses on the current situation of Spanish case law on ISP liability. It starts by presenting the more salient peculiarities of the Spanish transposition of the safe harbours laid down in the E-Commerce Directive. These peculiarities relate to the knowledge requirement of the hosting safe harbour, and to the safe harbour for information location tools. The article then provides an overview of the cases decided so far with regard to each of the safe harbours. Very few cases have dealt with the mere conduit and the caching safe harbours, though the latter was discussed in an interesting case involving Google’s cache. Most cases relate to hosting and linking safe harbours. With regard to hosting, the article focuses particularly on the two judgments handed down by the Supreme Court that hold an open interpretation of actual knowledge, an issue where courts had so far been split. Cases involving the linking safe harbour have mainly dealt with websites offering P2P download links. Accordingly, the article explores the legal actions brought against these sites, which for the moment have been unsuccessful. The new legislative initiative to fight against digital piracy – the Sustainable Economy Bill – is also analyzed. After the conclusion, the article provides an Annex listing the cases that have dealt with ISP liability in Spain since the safe harbours scheme was transposed into Spanish law.

Internet Service Providers’ liability for copyright infringement is a debated issue in France and Belgium, particularly with respect to intermediaries such as providers of hyperlinks and location tool services for which the e-commerce directive does not set explicitly any exemption from liability. Thus, the question arises among other things whether the safe harbour provisions provided for in respect of caching and hosting also could apply to search engines. French and Belgian Courts had recently to decide on this issue in several cases concerning Google’s complementary tools such as Google Videos, Google Images, Google Suggest and Google News. This article seeks to give a summary of and to assess this recent case law.

In this paper, we investigate content-centric data transmission in the context of short opportunistic contacts and base our work on an existing content-centric networking architecture. In case of short interconnection times, file transfers may not be completed and the received information is discarded. Caches in content-centric networks are used for short-term storage and do not guarantee persistence. We implemented a mechanism to extend caching on persistent storage enabling the completion of disrupted content transfers. The mechanisms have been implemented in the CCNx framework and have been evaluated on wireless mesh nodes. Our evaluations using multicast and unicast communication show that the implementation can support content transfers in opportunistic environments without significant processing and storing overhead.

In this paper we address energy efficiency issues of Information Centric Networking (ICN) architectures. In the proposed framework, we investigate the impact of ICN architectures on energy consumption of networking hardware devices and compare them with the energy consumption of other content dissemination methods. In particular, we investigate the consequences of caching in ICN from the energy efficiency perspective, taking into account the energy consumption of different hardware components in the ICN architectures. Based on the results of the analysis, we address the practical issues regarding the possible deployment and evolution of ICN from an energy-efficiency perspective. Finally, we summarize our findings and discuss the outlook/future perspectives on the energy efficiency of Information-Centric Networks.
