A series of binary SB blend samples with various overall volume fraction of PS (Phi(PS)) and different discrete distribution of the block length (denoted as d(PS) or d(PB)) were prepared by mixing various asymmetric poly(styrene)-block-poly(butadiene) (SB) block copolymers with a symmetric SB block copolymer. The influences of the external solvent field, composition, and the block length distribution on the morphologies of the blends in the thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results revealed that after solvent annealing, the interface of the blend thin films depended mainly on the cooperative effects of the annealing solvent and the inherently interfacial curvature of the blends. Upon exposure to the saturated vapor of cyclohexane, which has preferential affinity for the PB block, a "threshold" of Phi(PS) (approximate 0.635-0.707) was found. Below such threshold, the influence of the annealing solvent played an important role on the interfacial curvature of the blend thin film.

The self-assembly of symmetric coil-rod-coil ABA-type triblock copolymer melts is studied by applying self-consistent field lattice techniques in a three-dimensional space. The self-assembled ordered structures differ significantly with the variation of the volume fraction of the rod component, which include lamellar, wave lamellar, gyroid, perforated lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical-like phases. To understand the physical essence of these phases and the regimes of occurrence, we construct the phase diagram, which matches qualitatively with the existing experimental results. Compared with the coil-rod AB diblock copolymer, our results revealed that the interfacial grafting density of the separating rod and coil segments shows important influence on the self-assembly behaviors of symmetric coil-rod-coil ABA triblock copolymer melts. We found that the order-disorder transition point changes from f(rod)=0.5 for AB diblock copolymers to f(rod)=0.6 for ABA triblock copolymers. Our results also show that the spherical-like and cylindrical phases occupy most of the region in the phase diagram, and the lamellar phase is found stable only at the high volume fraction of the rod.

Self-assembling of novel biodegradable ABC-type triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-lactide)-poly(L-glutamic acid) (PEG-PLLA-PLGA) is studied. In aqueous media, it self-assembles into a spherical micelle with the hydrophobic PLLA segment in the core and the two hydrophilic segments PEG and PLGA in the shell. With the lengths of PEG and PLLA blocks fixed, the diameter of the micelles depends on the length of the PLGA block and on the volume ratio of H2O/dimethylformamide (DMF) in the media. When the PLGA block is long enough, morphology of the self-assembly is pH-dependent. It assembles into the spherical micelle in aqueous media at pH 4.5 and into the connected rod at or below pH 3.2. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the copolymer changes accordingly with decreasing solution pH. Both aggregation states can convert to each other at the proper pH value. This reversibility is ascribed to the dissociation and neutralization of the COOH groups in the LGA residues. When the PLGA block is short compared to the PEG or PLLA block, it assembles only into the spherical micelle at various pH values.

Novel biodegradable hydrogels by photo-cross-linking macromers based on polyphosphoesters and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) are reported. Photo-cross-linkable macromers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic phosphoester monomer 2-(2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholoyloxy) ethyl methacrylate (OPEMA) using PEG as the initiator and stannous octoate as the catalyst. The macrorners were characterized by H-1 NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography measurements. The content of polyphosphoester in the macromer was controlled by varying the feed ratio of OPEMA to PEG. Hydrogels were fabricated by exposing aqueous solutions of macromers with 0.05% (w/w) photoinitiator to UV light irradiation, and their swelling kinetics as well as degradation behaviors were evaluated. The results demonstrated that cross-linking density and pH values strongly affected the degradation rates. The macromers was compatible to osteoblast cells, not exhibiting significant cytotoxicity up to 0.5 mg/mL. "Live/dead" cell staining assay also demonstrated that a large majority of the osteoblast cells remained viable after encapsulation into the hydrogel constructs, showing their potential as tissue engineering scaffolds.

The self-assembly processes of the rod-coil diblock oligomer thin film of tetra-aniline (TANI)-block-poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) with different film thicknesses induced in the coil-selective solvent of acetone vapor at room temperature were studied. The morphologies of the oligomer films were determined by the film thickness. For the thicker film (232 nm), the nonextinct concentric ring-banded textures could form. While for the thinner and appropriate film (about 6 nm), multistacked diamond-shaped appearances with the periodic thickness being about 8.5 nm(6-nm-thick extended PLLA chain and 2.5-nm-thick p-pi conjugating TANI bimolecular layer) formed. The possible formation models of those two regular morphologies were presented in detail.

The crystallization behavior of crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymer containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), in which the weight fraction of PCL is 0.815, has been studied via differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC and WAXD indicated that both PEO and PCL blocks crystallize in the block copolymer. POM revealed a ring-banded spherulite morphology or the PEO-b-PCL diblock copolymer.

Previously, an inverted phase (the minority blocks comprising the continuum phase) was found in solution-cast block copolymer thin films. In this study, the effect of casting solvents on the formation of inverted phase has been studied. Two block copolymers, poly(styrene-b-butadiene) (SB) (M-w = 73 930 Da) and poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) (M-w = 140 000 Da), with comparable block lengths and equal polystyrene (PS) weight fraction (similar to30 wt %) were used. The copolymer thin films were cast from different solvents, toluene, benzene, cyclohexane, and binary mixtures of benzene and cyclohexane. Toluene and benzene are good solvents for both PS and PB, but have a preferential affinity for PS, while cyclohexane is a good solvent for PB but a Theta solvent for PS (T-Theta = 34.5 degreesC). The differential solvent affinity for PS and PB was estimated in terms of a difference between the polymer-solvent interaction parameter, chi, for each block. Under an extremely slow solvent evaporation rate, the time-dependent phase behavior during such a solution-to-film process was examined by freeze-drying the samples at different stages, corresponding to different copolymer concentrations, rho.

Poly(ethylene glycol) -poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymers PEG-PCL were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of c-caprolactone using monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) as the macroinitiator and calcium ammoniate as the catalyst. Obvious mutual influence between PEG and PCL crystallization was studied by altering the relative block length. Fixing the length of the PEG block (M-n = 5000) and increasing the length of the PCL block, the crystallization temperature of the PCL block rose gradually from I to about 35 degreesC while that of the PEG block dropped from 36 to -6.6 degreesC. Meanwhile, the melting temperature of the PCL block went up from 30 to 60 degreesC, while that of the PEG block declined from 60 to 41 degreesC. If the PCL block was longer than the PEG block, the former would crystallize first when cooling from a molten state and led to obviously imperfect crystallization of PEG and vice versa. And they both crystallized at the same temperature, if their weight fractions were equal. We found that the PEG block could still crystallize at -6.6 degreesC even when its weight fraction is only 14%. A unique morphology of concentric spherulites was observed for PEG5000-PCL5000.

Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL-b-PEO copolymer was confirmed by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four-armed PC L were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four-armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four-armed block copolymers differed from their starting four-armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four-armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content.

The micelle formation of a series of amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous and NaCl solutions was studied by a fluorescent probe technique using pyrene as a 'model drug'. These copolymers were synthesized from poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and L-lactide by a new calcium ammoniate catalyst. They had fixed PEG block lengths (44, 104 or 113 ethylene oxide units) and various poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) block lengths (15-280 lactide units). The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was found to decrease with increasing PLLA content. The distinct dissimilarity of the cmc values of diblock and triblock copolymers based on the same block length of PEG provided evidence for the different configurations of their micelles. It was also observed that the introduction of NaCl salt significantly contributed to a decrease in the cmcs of the copolymers with short PEG and PLLA blocks, while it had less influence on the cmcs of copolymers with long PEG or PLLA blocks. The dependence of partition coefficients ranging from 0.2x10(5) to 1.9x10(5) on the PLLA content in the copolymer and on the micelle configuration was also discussed.

Tetraaniline-block-poly(L-lactide) diblock oligomers are synthesized via ring-opening polymerization. The diblock oligomers cast from all L-lactide selective solvent (chloroform) show spherical aggregates for the leucoemeraldine state, and ring-like structures that are composed of much smaller spherical aggregates for the emeraldine state. The formation mechanisms of the two different surface morphologies are discussed in detail.

The synthesis of a novel ABC ternary segregated H-shaped copolymer is described, of which a central poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chain is terminated on both sides by polystyrene (PS) and poly(tert-butylacrylate) (PtBA) chains. The synthetic procedure involves functionalization of PEG by 2-bromosuccinic anhydride followed by esterification of 1,6-hexanediol, which gives its ends the bifunctional nature that allows sequential growth of two PS, then two PtBA arms via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The resulting segregated H-shaped copolymers were characterization by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). All these copolymers were affirmed to have well-defined structures and narrow molecular weight distributions.

A new asymmetric H-shaped block copolymer (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2) has been designed and successfully synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization. The synthesized 2,2-dichloro acetate-ethylene glycol (DCAG) was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene by ATRP to yield a symmetric homopolymer (Cl-PS)(2)-CHCCCCH2CH2OH with an active hydroxyl group. The chlorine was removed to yield the (PS)(2)-CHCOOCH2CH2OH ((PS)(2)-OH). The hydroxyl group of the (PS)(2)-OH, which is an active species of the living anionic polymerization, was used to initiate ethylene oxide by living anionic polymerization via DPMK to yield (PS)(2)-PEO-OH. The (PS)(2)-PEO-OH was reacted with the 2,2-dichloro acetyl chloride to yield (PS)(2)-PEO-OCCHCl2 ((PS)(2)-PEO-DCA). The asymmetric H-shaped block polymer (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2) was prepared via ATRP of MMA at 130 degrees C using (PS)(2)-PEO-DCA as initiator and CuCl/bPy as the catalyst system. The architectures of the asymmetric H-shaped block copolymers, (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2), were confirmed by H-1 NMR, GPC and Fr-IR.

The aggregation of rod-flexible ABA and BAB triblock (A was rod block and repulsive with block B) copolymers in a thin film was studied as a function of varying the rigidity (eta) and the length of the rod block by Monte Carlo simulation. The rigidity of block A was defined as eta = R-c/R-max in this study. R-c, was the end-to-end distance below which the conformation of the block was not allowed, whereas R-max, was the longest end-to-end distance that the block could be. If eta = 0 the block was flexible, whereas if eta = 1 the block was a straight rod. The simulation results showed that the ABA triblock copolymer film were likely to form lamella structure with increasing the rigidity (eta) of block A. The lamellas were parallel each other and perpendicular to the film surface. However, the aggregation of BAB triblock copolymers tended to change from lamella to cylinder structure with increasing the rigidity (eta) of block A. Typical lamella and cylinder co-exist structure was obtained at eta = 0.504 for the BAB copolymer film. On the other hand, the simulation results indicated that the film changed from disorder to order, then to disorder structure with increasing the relative length of B block for both ABA and BAB copolymer films.
