The synthesis of dithiocarbamate ligands based on a pyrrole framework is reported. These ligands self-assemble with zinc(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) to afford neutral, dinuclear metallomacrocycles and trinuclear metallocryptands. The assembled metallo compounds have been characterised by a range of techniques, including H-1 NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Some preliminary anion binding studies have also been conducted, using electronic spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The nickel macrocycles showed some affinity for acetate, whereas the copper cryptand showed affinity for benzoate anions. The copper cryptand also exhibited a significant electrochemical response to a range of anions.

The 28-membered octaazamacrocycle Me-2[28]py(2)N(6) was used as a receptor for the molecular recognition of aromatic and aliphatic carboxylate substrates. The receptor-substrate binding behaviour of (H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6))(6+) with an aliphatic (-O2C(CH2)(n)CO2-, n=0 to 4) and an aromatic (phthalate, isophthalate, terephthalate, 4,4'-dibenzoate, benzoate, 3- and 4-nitrobenzoate) series of carboxylate anions was evaluated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy (carried out in DMSO-d(6) at 300 K). Two association constants were found for most of the studied cases, except for 3- and 4-nitrobenzoate for which only K-1 was determined. For oxalate, malonate, benzoate and dibenzoate anions only the beta(2) constants could be obtained. The values of the first association constant cover a range from 2.86 to 3.69 (log units), and the second stepwise constant from 2.15 to 2.89 (also in log units). No special selectivity was found but the highest values were determined for adipate and the lowest for the monoprotic 3- and 4-nitrobenzoates. Single crystal X-ray structures of H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6)(6+) with terephthalate, 1, and 4,4'-dibenzoate (2) were determined showing supramolecular entities with general formula (H6Me2[28]py(2)N(6)).(substrate)(2)(PF6)(2).4H(2)O. These anions are the building blocks of an extensive 3-D network of hydrogen bonds.

The results of an experimental study into the oxidative degradation of proxies for atmospheric aerosol are presented. We demonstrate that the laser Raman tweezers method can be used successfully to obtain uptake coeffcients for gaseous oxidants on individual aqueous and organic droplets, whilst the size and composition of the droplets is simultaneously followed. A laser tweezers system was used to trap individual droplets containing an unsaturated organic compound in either an aqueous or organic ( alkane) solvent. The droplet was exposed to gas- phase ozone and the reaction kinetics and products followed using Raman spectroscopy. The reactions of three different organic compounds with ozone were studied: fumarate anions, benzoate anions and alpha pinene. The fumarate and benzoate anions in aqueous solution were used to represent components of humic- like substances, HULIS; a alpha- pinene in an alkane solvent was studied as a proxy for biogenic aerosol. The kinetic analysis shows that for these systems the diffusive transport and mass accommodation of ozone is relatively fast, and that liquid- phase di. ffusion and reaction are the rate determining steps. Uptake coe. ffcients, g, were found to be ( 1.1 +/- 0.7) x 10(-5), ( 1.5 +/- 0.7) x 10 (-5) and ( 3.0 - 7.5) x 10 (-3) for the reactions of ozone with the fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene containing droplets, respectively. Liquid- phase bimolecular rate coe. cients for reactions of dissolved ozone molecules with fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene were also obtained: k(fumarate) = ( 2.7 +/- 2) x 10 (5), k(benzoate) = ( 3.5 +/- 3) x 10 (5) and k(alpha-pinene) = ( 1-3) x 10(7) dm(3) mol (-1) s (- 1). The droplet size was found to remain stable over the course of the oxidation process for the HULIS- proxies and for the oxidation of a- pinene in pentadecane. The study of the alpha- pinene/ ozone system is the first using organic seed particles to show that the hygroscopicity of the particle does not increase dramatically over the course of the oxidation. No products were detected by Raman spectroscopy for the reaction of benzoate ions with ozone. One product peak, consistent with aqueous carbonate anions, was observed when following the oxidation of fumarate ions by ozone. Product peaks observed in the reaction of ozone with alpha- pinene suggest the formation of new species containing carbonyl groups.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. The synthesis of a range of ditopic polyferrocenyl zinc(II) dithiocarbamate macrocyclic receptors containing ferrocene groups on the macrocycle's periphery and/or as part of the cyclic cavity is reported. The assemblies have been characterised by a range of spectroscopic techniques, electrochemical studies and in two cases by X-ray structure determination. The ability of these host systems to bind and sense electrochemically anionic guest species, isonicotinate and benzoate, and neutral 4-picoline guest was examined by H-1 NMR and cyclic voltammetric titration studies. The strongest association was found between the isonicotinate anion and a dinuclear zinc(II) receptor whose macrocyclic cavity is of complementary size to complex this bidentate guest species in a cooperative manner. Cyclic voltammetric studies demonstrated that all receptors can electrochemically sense the binding of isonicotinate and benzoate via significant cathodic perturbations of the respective ferrocene redox couple.

The hexaazamacrocycles [28](DBF)2N6 {cyclo[bis(4,6-dimethyldibenzo[b,d]furaniminoethyleneiminoethylene]} and [32](DBF)2N6 {cyclo[bis(4,6-dimethyldibenzo[b,d]furaniminopropyleneiminopropylene]} form stable dinuclear copper(II) complexes suitable to behave as receptors for several anionic substrates. These two receptors were used to study the binding interactions with several substrates, such as imidazole (Him) and some carboxylates [benzoate (bz−), oxalate (ox2−), malonate (mal2−), phthalate (ph2−), isophthalate (iph2−), and terephthalate (tph2−)] by spectrophotometric titrations and EPR spectroscopy in MeOH (or H2O):DMSO (1:1 v/v) solution. The largest association constant was found for ox2− with Cu2[32](DBF)2N64+, whereas for the aromatic dicarboxylate anions the binding constants follow the trend ph2− > iph2− > tph2−, i.e. decrease with the increase of the distance of the two binding sites of the substrate. On the other hand, the large blue shift of 68 nm observed by addition of Him to Cu2[32](DBF)2N64+ points out for the formation of the bridged CuimCu cascade complex, indicating this receptor as a potential sensor for the detection and determination of imidazole in solution. The X-band EPR spectra of the Cu2[28](DBF)2N64+ and Cu2[32](DBF)2N6]4+ complexes and the cascade complexes with the substrates, performed in H2O:DMSO (1:1 v/v) at 5 to 15 K, showed that the CuCu distance is slightly larger than the one found in crystal state and that this distance increases when the substrate is accommodated between the two copper centres. The crystal structure of [Cu2[28](DBF)2N6(ph)2]·CH3OH was determined by X-ray diffraction and revealed the two copper centres bridged by two ph2− anions at a Cu···Cu distance of 5.419(1) Å. Each copper centre is surrounded by three carboxylate oxygen atoms from two phthalate anions and three contiguous nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle in a pseudo octahedral coordination environment.

Four new cadmium(II) complexes [Cd-2(bz)(4)(H2O)(4)(mu 2-hmt)]center dot Hbz center dot H2O (1), [Cd-3(bz)(6)(H2O)(6)(mu 2-hmt)(2)]center dot 6H(2)O (2), [Cd(pa)(2)(H2O)(mu(2)-hmt)](n) (3), and {[Cd-3(ac)(6)(H2O)(3)(mu(3)-hmt)(2)]center dot 6H(2)O}(n) (4) with hexamine (hmt) and monocarboxylate ions, benzoate (bz), phenylacetate (pa), or acetate (ac) have been synthesized and characterized structurally. Structure determinations reveal that 1 is dinuclear, 2 is trinuclear, 3 is a one-dimensional (1D) infinite chain, and 4 is a two-dimensional (2D) polymer with fused hexagonal rings consisting of Cd-II and hmt. All the Cd-II atoms in the four complexes (except one CdII in 2) possess seven-coordinate pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with the various chelating bidentate carboxylate groups in equatorial sites. One of the CdII ions in 2, a complex that contains two monodentate carboxylates is in a distorted octahedral environment. The bridging mode of hmt is mu 2- in complexes 1-3 but is mu 3- in complex 4. In all complexes, there are significant numbers of H-bonds, C-H/pi, and pi-pi interactions which play crucial roles in forming the supramolecular networks. The importance of the noncovalent interactions in terms of energies and geometries has been analyzed using high level ab initio calculations. The effect of the cadmium coordinated to hmt on the energetic features of the C-H/pi interaction is analyzed. Finally, the interplay between C-H/pi and pi-pi interactions observed in the crystal structure of 3 is also studied.

The synthesis of methacrylate esters of 4-cyanophenyl-(4-(ω-hydroxyalkyloxy)) cinnamates, with spacer lengths of 2 and 6 methylene units and the synthesis of the corresponding acrylate ester with a spacer of 2 methylene units are described. The methacrylate monomers were polymerized by free radical polymerization, both as homopolymers and as copolymers with the analogous benzoate monomer of spacer length 6. The acrylate ester could not be polymerized successfully under the same reaction conditions. Polymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermo-optic observations. Of the monomers prepared, only the cinnamate with a hexamethylene spacer shows a mesophase, seen on supercooling of the melt. All of the polymers prepared were liquid crystalline, with smectic behavior predominating in the polymethacrylates with the longer spacer group. A narrow nematic region is seen just below the clearing temperature with a range of 3–9°C, nematic character is increased in the copolymer series with the degree of incorporation of the cinnamate monomer with the spacer group of length 2.

A series of chain liquid crystalline copolymers of 4-cyanophenyl 4′-(6-methacryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl β-(1-naphthyl)-propenoate were prepared by free radical polymerization. The corresponding polyacrylates could not be prepared in the same way and an alternative method was used for their preparation involving the synthesis of copolymers of the mesogenic monomer and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate followed by treatment of the resulting polymers with β-(1-naphthyl)propenoyl chloride. The materials are of interest as photoactive liquid crystalline polymers. The effect of introducing a bulky nonmesogenic group into a liquid crystalline copolymer generally lowers the clearing temperature and raises Tg but also gives rise to contrasting phase behaviour in these two series of polymers. Polymethacrylates which show mesomorphism have sharp transitions and continue to exhibit a highly ordered smectic phase over the bulk of their liquid crystal range. Polyacrylates, on the other hand, exhibit a weakening and broadening-out of their thermal transitions consistent with a lowering of order. These results emphasize the effect of the polymer backbone on phase behaviour.

Three new MnIII complexes, {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OCn)](ClO4)}(n) (1), {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OPh)](ClO4)}(n) (2) and {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OBz)](ClO4)}(2) (3) (where salen = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane dianion, OCn = cinnamate, OPh = phenylacetate and OBz = benzoate), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The crystal structures reveal that all three structures contain syn-anti carboxylatebridged dimeric [Mn-2(salen)(2)(OOCR)](+) cations (OOCR = bridging carboxylate) that are joined together by weak Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) interactions to form infinite alternating chain structures in 1 and 2, but the relatively long Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) distance [3.621(2)angstrom] in 3 restricts this structure to tetranuclear units. Magnetic studies showed that 1 and 2 exhibited magnetic long-range order at T-N = 4.0 and 4.6 K (T-N = Neel transition temperature), respectively, to give spin-canted antiferromagnetic structures. Antiferromagnetic coupling was also observed in 3 but no peaks were recorded in the field-cooled magnetization (FCM) or zero-field-cooled magnetization (ZFCM) data, indicating that 3 remained paramagnetic down to 2 K. This dominant antiferromagnetic coupling is attributed to the carboxylate bridges. The ferromagnetic coupling expected due to the Mn-O(phenoxo)center dot center dot center dot Mn bridge plays an auxiliary role in the magnetic chain, but is an essential component of the bulk magnetic properties of the material.

The GPR30 is a novel estrogen receptor (ER) that is a candidate membrane ER based on its binding to 17beta estradiol and its rapid signaling properties such as activation of the extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway. Its distribution in the mouse limbic system predicts a role for this receptor in the estrogenic modulation of anxiety behaviors in the mouse. A previous study showed that chronic administration of a selective agonist to the GPR30 receptor, G-1, in the female rat can improve spatial memory, suggesting that GPR30 plays a role in hippocampal-dependent cognition. In this study, we investigated the effect of a similar chronic administration of G-1 on behaviors that denote anxiety in adult ovariectomized female mice, using the elevated plus maze (EPM) and the open field test as well as the activation of the ERK pathway in the hippocampus. Although estradiol benzoate had no effect on behaviors in the EPM or the open field, G-1 had an anxiolytic effect solely in the open field that was independent of ERK signaling in either the ventral or dorsal hippocampus. Such an anxiolytic effect may underlie the ability of G-1 to increase spatial memory, by acting on the hippocampus.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Estrogens are important effectors of reproduction and are critical for upregulating female reproductive behavior or lordosis in females. In addition to the importance of transcriptional regulation of genes by 17beta-estradiol-bound estrogen receptors (ER), extranuclear signal transduction cascades such as protein kinase A (PKA) are also important in regulating female sexual receptivity. GPR30 (G-protein coupled receptor 30), also known as GPER1, a putative membrane ER (mER), is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds 17beta-estradiol with an affinity that is similar to that possessed by the classical nuclear ER and activates both PKA and extracellular-regulated kinase signaling pathways. The high expression of GPR30 in the ventromedial hypothalamus, a region important for lordosis behavior as well as kinase cascades activated by this receptor, led us to hypothesize that GPR30 may regulate lordosis behavior in female rodents. METHOD: In this study, we investigated the ability of G-1, a selective agonist of GPR30, to regulate lordosis in the female mouse by administering this agent prior to progesterone in an estradiol-progesterone priming paradigm prior to testing with stud males. RESULTS: As expected, 17beta-estradiol benzoate (EB), but not sesame oil, increased lordosis behavior in female mice. G-1 also increased lordosis behavior in female mice and decreased the number of rejective responses towards male mice, similar to the effect of EB. The selective GPR30 antagonist G-15 blocked these effects. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that activation of the mER GPR30 stimulates social behavior in a rodent model in a manner similar to EB.

The processing of fish roe leads to changes in its chemical composition, the extent of which depends on the techniques and additives employed. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ripening temperature and the use of sodium benzoate and citric acid on the quality of ripened cod roe, with respect to the contents of volatile base nitrogen (VBN), trimethylamine (TMA), biogenic amines (BA) and on the lipid composition. In comparison with fresh roes, ripened roes presented higher contents of VBN, TMA, BA and the proportion of free fatty acids regardless of the temperature and additives used during the ripening process. The greatest increases were observed in the samples ripened at 17 degrees C without additives, in which histamine was detected at 8.8 mg/100 g. A low ripening temperature was the main factor responsible for minimising changes in the cod roe composition. The addition of sodium benzoate as a preservative or citric acid to decrease the pH value had a significant effect in maintaining the quality of the cod roes, mainly at high ripening temperature.
