Software architectural evaluation is a key discipline used to identify, at early stages of a real-time system (RTS) development, the problems that may arise during its operation. Typical mechanisms supporting concurrency, such as semaphores, mutexes or monitors, usually lead to concurrency problems in execution time that are difficult to be identified, reproduced and solved. For this reason, it is crucial to understand the root causes of these problems and to provide support to identify and mitigate them at early stages of the system lifecycle. This paper aims to present the results of a research work oriented to the development of the tool called ‘Deadlock Risk Evaluation of Architectural Models’ (DREAM) to assess deadlock risk in architectural models of an RTS. A particular architectural style, Pipelines of Processes in Object-Oriented Architectures–UML (PPOOA) was used to represent platform-independent models of an RTS architecture supported by the PPOOA –Visio tool. We validated the technique presented here by using several case studies related to RTS development and comparing our results with those from other deadlock detection approaches, supported by different tools. In high quality solar cells, the internal luminescence can be harnessed to enhance the overall performance. Internal confinement of the photons can lead to an increased open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current. Alternatively, in multijunction solar cells the photons can be coupled from a higher bandgap junction to a lower bandgap junction for enhanced performance. We model the solar cell as an optical cavity and compare calculated performance characteristics with measurements. We also describe how very high luminescent coupling alleviates the need for top-cell thinning to achieve current-matching.

The CdIn2S4 spinel semiconductor is a potential photovoltaic material due to its energy band gap and absorption properties. These optoelectronic properties can be potentiality improved by the insertion of intermediate states into the energy bandgap. We explore this possibility using M = Cr, V and Mn as an impurity. We analyze with first-principles almost all substitutions of the host atoms by M at the octahedral and tetrahedral sites in the normal and inverse spinel structures. In almost all cases, the impurities introduce deeper bands into the host energy bandgap. Depending on the site substitution, these bands are full, empty or partially-full. It increases the number of possible inter-band transitions and the possible applications in optoelectronic devices. The contribution of the impurity states to these bands and the substitutional energies indicate that these impurities are energetically favorable for some sites in the host spinel. The absorption coefficients in the independent-particle approximation show that these deeper bands open additional photon absorption channels. It could therefore increase the solar-light absorption with respect to the host.

Papers of the school were ordinarily published in the American Journal of Archaeology, 2d. ser.; supplementary volumes wre authorized when material for publication either exceeded the space available in the journal, or when it was of such a nature as to make a different mode of publication advisable. (cf. v. 1, Prefatory note) The present volumes form the only collection of papers issued separately by the school in Rome. (Lists of the papers published in other journals, 1898-1907, may be found in the Supplementary papers, v. 1-2, Prefatory note) From 1909-12, the reports, etc., of the school were published in the Bulletin of the Archaeological Institute of America. On January 1, 1913, the American School of Classical Studies in Rome became a part of the American Academy in Rome.
