The activity of strontium in liquid Al-Sr alloys (X(Sr) less-than-or-equal-to 0.17) at 1323 K has been determined using the Knudsen effusion-mass loss technique. At higher concentrations (X(Sr) greater-than-or-equal-to 0.28), the activity of strontium has been determined by the pseudoisopiestic technique. Activity of aluminium has been derived by Gibbs-Duhem integration. The concentration - concentration structure factor of Bhatia and Thornton at zero wave vector has been computed from the thermodynamic data. The behaviour of the mean square thermal fluctuation in composition and the thermodynamic mixing functions suggest association tendencies in the liquid state. The associated solution model with Al2Sr as the predominant complex can account for the properties of the liquid alloy. Thermodynamic data for the intermetallic compunds in the Al-Sr system have been derived using the phase diagram and the Gibbs' energy and enthalpy of mixing of liquid alloys. The data indicate the need for redetermination of the phase diagram near the strontium-rich corner.

The equilibrium pressure of calcium corresponding to the reduction reaction 6CaO (s) + 2Al (l) half-arrow-right-over-half-arrow-left 3CaO.Al2O3 (s) + 3Ca (g) has been measured by Knudsen effusion - mass loss analysis in the temperature range 1190 - 1500 K. The measured vapour pressure can be expressed as a function of temperature by the relation: log p(Ca) (Pa) = -10,670/T + 9.267 The calcium generated is partially absorbed by aluminium to form an alloy. The equilibrium composition of the alloy at 1373 K was found to be 22 mol% Ca - 78 mol% Al. The measured vapour pressure is in good agreement with that computed from thermodynamic data.

Attempts were made to produce directionally solidified, specifically grain aligned Al-6 wt pct Ni eutectic alloy using a laboratory scale ESR unit. For this purpose sand cast alloy electrodes were electroslag remelted under different mold conditions. The grain structure of the ingots obtained from these meltings showed that insulated silica molds gave the best vertical alignment of grains along the length of the ingot. The NiAl3 fibers within the grains tended to fan out and there was only a preferred alignment of fibers along the growth direction under the conditions of our experiments. The ESR parameters most suitable for vertical alignment of eutectic grains have been identified. In some electroslag remelting trials ingots were grown on a seed ingot. This resulted in a fewer vertical grains compared to the case when no seed ingot was used. The sand cast specimen of the eutectic exhibited a maximum tensile strength of around 88.2 MN/m2 (9.0 kg/mm2) whereas conventional ESR using water cooled mold gave strength value of 98.0 MN/m2 (10 kg/mm2). The directionally solidified ESR material showed longitudinal tensile strength as high as 213.7 MN/m2 (21.8 kg/mm2) which could be further increased to 220.6 MN/m2 (22.5 kg/mm2) by using the seed ingot. The average growth rate was varied between 5 to 25 mm/min during electroslag remelting in this study. The flow stresses, tangent modulus and ultimate tensile strength of directionally solidified eutectic increased with increasing growth rates.

The propagation constant of a superconducting microstrip transmission delay line is evaluated using the spectral domain immitance approach, modelling the superconductor as a surface current having an equivalent surface impedance found through the complex resistive boundary condition. The sensitivity approach is used to study the beta variations with substrate parameters and film characteristics. Results show that the surface impedance does not have much influence on beta sensitivities with respect to epsilon r, W and h. However, it can be observed that the surface impedance plays a crucial role in determining the optimum design.

Relentless CMOS scaling coupled with lower design tolerances is making ICs increasingly susceptible to wear-out related permanent faults and transient faults, necessitating on-chip fault tolerance in future chip microprocessors (CMPs). In this paper we introduce a new energy-efficient fault-tolerant CMP architecture known as Redundant Execution using Critical Value Forwarding (RECVF). RECVF is based on two observations: (i) forwarding critical instruction results from the leading to the trailing core enables the latter to execute faster, and (ii) this speedup can be exploited to reduce energy consumption by operating the trailing core at a lower voltage-frequency level. Our evaluation shows that RECVF consumes 37% less energy than conventional dual modular redundant (DMR) execution of a program. It consumes only 1.26 times the energy of a non-fault-tolerant baseline and has a performance overhead of just 1.2%.

A strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans MAL-4-1 was adapted to grow at higher concentrations of copper by repeated subculturing in the presence of increasing levels of added cupric ions in 9K medium. The strains adapted to copper were found to be more efficient in bioleaching of copper from concentrates. When copper tolerant strains were back cultured repeatedly in 9K medium without cupric ions, the initially developed metal tolerance was observed to be lost. This indicates that the copper tolerance developed is stress-dependent and not a permanent trait of the adapted strain.

The influence of different concentrations of base metal ions, such as CU2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+, when present either alone or in different possible binary and ternary combinations in a 9K medium, on the fel rous ion oxidation ability of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. Levels and degree of toxicity of these ions have been quantified in terms of toxicity index (TI). Copper and zinc tolerant strains of the bacteria were developed through serial subculturing and their activity tested in the presence of the above metal ions in comparison with the behavior of wild unadapted cells under similar conditions. Copper tolerant strains (25 g/L Cu2+) were found to be more efficient in the bioleaching of both copper and zinc concentrates than wild unadapted strains, while zinc tolerant strains (40 g/L Zn2+) exhibited better leaching efficiency only in the bioleaching of sphalerite concentrates. The significance and relevance of multi-metal ion tolerance in Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been highlighted with respect to bioleaching of sulphide mineral concentrates. The effect of NaCl on total peroxidase activity, induction of isoperoxidases and lipid peroxidation in 5-day-old seedlings of two contrasting genotypes of Setaria italica L. (Prasad, a salt tolerant cultivar and Lepakshi, a salt susceptible cultivar), was studied. Total peroxidase activity increased under NaCl salinity and the degree of elevation in the activity was salt concentration dependent. Nevertheless, a greater activity was recorded in the tolerant cultivar (cv Prasad) compared to the susceptible (cv Lepakshi) one in all days of sampling. Further, the pattern of isoperoxidases was modified during stress conditions as evident from the electrophoregrams. Although, five acidic isoforms were detected in both cultivars, differences were found between the cultivars. Furthermore, it was observed that acidic isoperoxidases were strongly expressed and an acidic isoperoxidase, A(3p) (27 kDa) is specifically found in the tolerant cultivar (cv Prasad) under NaCl stress. This isoform was partially purified and found to be thermostable with pr 5.5 and the optimum pH 7.4. A close correlation exists between the rate of lipid peroxidation in terms of malonaldehyde (MDA) content and total peroxidase activity per gram fresh weight with salt tolerance of the two cultivars. The tolerant cultivar (cv Prasad) had low MDA content and high total peroxidase activity than the susceptible variety (cv Lepakshi) during salinity stress. Nanoembedded lead-tin alloys in aluminum matrix were synthesized by rapid solidification processing. These melt-spun aluminum alloys were then investigated using XRD, EDX and TEM. The XRD study reveals that the melt-spun samples contain elemental aluminum, lead and tin. The TEM analysis shows that embedded particles in aluminium matrix have a distinct two-phase contrast of lead and tin. The lead and tin in these nanoalloys exhibit an orientation relationship with the matrix aluminum and with each other. DSC studies were conducted to reveal the melting and solidification characteristics of these embedded nanoalloys. DSC thermograms exhibit features of multiple solidification exotherms on thermal cycling, which can be attributed to sequential melting and solidification of lead and tin in the respective alloys.

In order to obtain basic understanding of microstructure evolution in laser-surface-alloyed layers, aluminum was surface alloyed on a pure nickel substrate using a CO2 laser. By varying the laser scanning speed, the composition of the surface layers can be systematically varied. The Ni content in the layer increases with increase in scanning speed. Detailed cross-sectional transmission electron microscopic study reveals complexities in solidification behavior with increased nickel content. It is shown that ordered B2 phase forms over a wide range of composition with subsequent precipitation of Ni2Al, an ordered omega phase in the B2 matrix, during solid-state cooling. For nickel-rich alloys associated with higher laser scan speed, the fcc gamma phase is invariably the first phase to grow from the liquid with solute trapping. The phase reorders in the solid state to yield gamma' Ni3Al. The phase competes with beta AlNi, which forms massively from the liquid. The beta AlNi transforms martensitically to a 3R structure during cooling in solid state. The results can be rationalized in terms of a metastable phase diagram proposed earlier. However, the results are at variance with earlier studies of laser processing of nickel-rich alloys.

A new type of bearing alloy containing ultrafine sized tin and silicon dispersions in aluminum was designed using laser surface alloying and laser remelting techniques. The microstructures of these non-equilibrium processed alloys were studied in detail using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The microstructures revealed three distinct morphologies of tin particles namely elongated particles co-existing with silicon, globular particles, and very fine particles. Our detailed analyses using cellular growth theories showed that the formation of these globular tin particles was due to the pinching off of the tin rich liquid in the inter-cellular space by the growth of aluminum secondary dendrite arms. Evidence of fine recrystallized aluminum grains at the top layer due to constrained solidification was shown. Thermal analyses suggested that melting of the spherical shaped tin particles was controlled by the binary aluminum-tin eutectic reaction, whereas non-spherical tin particles melted via the tin-silicon eutectic reaction.

We report the formation ω phase in the remelted layers during laser cladding and remelting of quasicrystal forming Al65Cu23.3Fe11.7 alloy on pure aluminum. The ω phase is absent in the clad layers. In the remelted layer, the phase nucleates at the periphery of the primary icosahedral phase particles. A large number of ω phase particles forms enveloping the icosahedral phase growing into aluminum rich melt, which solidify as α-Al solid solution. On the other side it develops an interface with aluminum. A detailed transmission electron microscopic analysis shows that ω phase exhibits orientation relationship with icosahedral phase. The composition analysis performed using energy dispersive x-ray analyzer suggests that this phase has composition higher aluminum than the icosahedral phase. The analysis of the available phase diagram information indicates that the present results represent large departure from equilibrium conditions. A possible scenario of the evolution of the ω phase has been suggested.

The protein MsRbpA from Mycobacterium smegmatis rescues RNA polymerase (RNAP) from the inhibitory effect of rifampicin (Rif). We have reported previously that MsRbpA interacts with the beta-subunit of RNAP and that the effect of MsRbpA on Rif-resistant (Rif(R)) RNAP is minimal. Here we attempted to gain molecular insights into the mechanism of action of this protein with respect to its role in rescuing RNAP from Rif-mediated transcription inhibition. Our experimental approach comprised multiple-round transcription assays, fluorescence spectroscopy, MS and surface plasmon resonance in order to meet the above objective. Based on our molecular studies we propose here that Rif is released from its binding site in the RNAP-Rif complex in the presence of MsRbpA. Biophysical studies reveal that the location of MsRbpA on RNAP is at the junction of the beta- and beta'-subunits, close to the Rif-binding site and the (i + 1) site on RNAP.
