The role of defects on laser-excited photoluminescence of various ZnO nanostructures has been investigated. The study shows that defects present in ZnO nanostructures, specially Zn-related defects play a crucial role in determining the laser-excited photoluminescence intensity (LEI). ZnO nanoparticles as well as nanorods (NR) annealed in oxygen atmosphere exhibit remarkable enhancement in LEI. A similar enhancement is also shown by Al-doped ZnO NR. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Combustion instability events in lean premixed combustion systems can cause spatio-temporal variations in unburnt mixture fuel/air ratio. This provides a driving mechanism for heat-release oscillations when they interact with the flame. Several Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approaches to predict the characteristics of these oscillations have been developed in the past. The present paper compares results for flame describing function characteristics determined from a ROM approach based on the level-set method, with corresponding results from detailed, fully compressible reacting flow computations for the same two dimensional slot flame configuration. The comparison between these results is seen to be sensitive to small geometric differences in the shape of the nominally steady flame used in the two computations. When the results are corrected to account for these differences, describing function magnitudes are well predicted for frequencies lesser than and greater than a lower and upper cutoff respectively due to amplification of flame surface wrinkling by the convective Darrieus-Landau (DL) instability. However, good agreement in describing function phase predictions is seen as the ROM captures the transit time of wrinkles through the flame correctly. Also, good agreement is seen for both magnitude and phase of the flame response, for large forcing amplitudes, at frequencies where the DL instability has a minimal influence. Thus, the present ROM can predict flame response as long as the DL instability, caused by gas expansion at the flame front, does not significantly alter flame front perturbation amplitudes as they traverse the flame. The velocity scale inside an acoustically levitated droplet depends on the levitator and liquid properties. Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), detailed velocity measurements have been made in a levitated droplet of different diameters and viscosity. The maximum velocity and rotation are normalized using frequency and amplitude of acoustic levitator, and droplet viscosity. The non-dimensional data are fitted for micrometer- and millimeter-sized droplets levitated in different levitators for different viscosity fluids. It is also shown that the rotational speed of nanosilica droplets at an advanced stage of vaporization compares well with that predicted by exponentially fitted parameters. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The present work involves a computational study of soot formation and transport in case of a laminar acetylene diffusion flame perturbed by a co nvecting line vortex. The topology of the soot contours (as in an earlier experimental work [4]) have been investigated. More soot was produced when vortex was introduced from the air si de in comparison to a fuel side vortex. Also the soot topography was more diffused in case of the air side vortex. The computational model was found to be in good agreement with the ex perimental work [4]. The computational simulation enabled a study of the various parameters affecting soot transport. Temperatures were found to be higher in case of air side vortex as compared to a fuel side vortex. In case of the fuel side vortex, abundance of fuel in the vort ex core resulted in stoichiometrically rich combustion in the vortex core, and more discrete so ot topography. Overall soot production too was low. In case of the air side vortex abundan ce of air in the core resulted in higher temperatures and more soot yield. Statistical techniques like probability density fun ction, correlation coefficient and conditional probability function were introduced to explain the transient dependence of soot yield and transport on various parameters like temperature, a cetylene concentration.

Tissue injury during therapeutic ultrasound or lithotripsy is thought, in cases, to be due to the action of cavitation bubbles. Assessing this and mitigating it is challenging since bubble dynamics in the complex confinement of tissues or in small blood vessels are challenging to predict. Simulations tools require specialized algorithms to simultaneously represent strong acoustic waves and shocks, topologically complex liquid‐vapor phase boundaries, and the complex viscoelastic material dynamics of tissue. We discuss advances in a simulation tool for such situations. A single‐mesh Eulerian solver is used to solve the governing equations. Special sharpening terms maintain the liquid‐vapor interface in face of the finite numerical dissipation included in the scheme to accurately capture shocks. A recent enhancement to this formulation has significantly improved this interface capturing procedure, which is demonstrated for simulation of the Rayleigh collapse of a bubble. The solver also transports elastic stresses and can thus be used to assess the effects of elastic properties on bubble dynamics. A shock‐induced bubble collapse adjacent to a model elastic tissue is used to demonstrate this and draw some conclusions regarding the injury suppressing role that tissue elasticity might play.

We report thermally induced instability leading to catastrophic breakup in acoustically levitated vaporizing fuel droplets. Change in surface tension and viscosity with increase in droplet temperature causes wide fluctuations in droplet aspect ratio. If the viscous damping of aspect ratio oscillation is not strong enough, the droplet goes through unbounded stretching. If the droplet exceeds a critical Weber number locally, a bag type and capillary wave induced atomization can occur, which leads to catastrophic breakup. A stability criterion has been established based on the inhomogeneity of Bernoulli (acoustic) pressure and surface tension of the droplet in terms of a local Weber number and Ohnesorge number. This instability is thermally induced in a droplet which does not experience instabilities without heating. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article aims at seeking the universal behavior of propagation rate variation with air superficial velocity (V-s) in a packed bed of a range of biomass particles in reverse downdraft mode while also resolving the differing and conflicting explanations in the literature. Toward this, measurements are made of exit gas composition, gas phase and condensed phase surface temperature (T-g and T-s), and reaction zone thickness for a number of biomass with a range of properties. Based on these data, two regimes are identified: gasificationvolatile oxidation accompanied by char reduction reactions up to 16 +/- 1cm/s of V-s and above this, and char oxidationsimultaneous char oxidation and gas phase combustion. In the gasification regime, the measured T-s is less than T-g; a surface heat balance incorporating a diffusion controlled model for flaming combustion gives and matches with the experimental results to within 5%. In the char oxidation regime, T-g and T-s are nearly equal and match with the equilibrium temperature at that equivalence ratio. Drawing from a recent study of the authors, the ash layer over the oxidizing char particle is shown to play a critical role in regulating the radiation heat transfer to fresh biomass in this regime and is shown to be crucial in explaining the observed propagation behavior. A simple model based on radiation-convection balance that tracks the temperature-time evolution of a fresh biomass particle is shown to support the universal behavior of the experimental data on reaction front propagation rate from earlier literature and the present work for biomass with ash content up to 10% and moisture fraction up to 10%. Upstream radiant heat transfer from the ash-laden hot char modulated by the air flow is shown to be the dominant feature of this model.

The present work involves a computational study of soot (chosen as a scalar which is a primary pollutant source) formation and transport in a laminar acetylene diffusion flame perturbed by a convecting line vortex. The topology of soot contours resulting from flame vortex interactions has been investigated. More soot was produced when vortex was introduced from the air side in comparison to the fuel side. Also, the soot topography was spatially more diffuse in the case of air side vortex. The computational model was found to be in good agreement with the experimental work previously reported in the literature. The computational simulation enabled a study of various parameters like temperature, equivalence ratio and temperature gradient affecting the soot production and transport. Temperatures were found to be higher in the case of air side vortex in contrast to the fuel side one. In case of fuel side vortex, abundance of fuel in the vortex core resulted in fuel-rich combustion zone in the core and a more discrete soot topography. Besides, the overall soot production was observed to be low in the fuel side vortex. However, for the air side vortex, air abundance in the core resulted in higher temperatures and greater soot production. Probability density functions (PDFs) have been introduced to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of soot yield and transport and their dependence on temperature and acetylene concentration from statistical view point. In addition, the effect of flame curvature on soot production is also studied. The regions convex to fuel stream side witnessed thicker soot layer. All numerical simulations have been carried out on Fluent 6.3.26. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we clarify the role of Markstein diffusivity, which is the product of the planar laminar flame speed and the Markstein length, on the turbulent flame speed and its scaling, based on experimental measurements on constant-pressure expanding turbulent flames. Turbulent flame propagation data are presented for premixed flames of mixtures of hydrogen, methane, ethylene, n-butane, and dimethyl ether with air, in near-isotropic turbulence in a dual-chamber, fan-stirred vessel. For each individual fuel-air mixture presented in this work and the recently published iso-octane data from Leeds, normalized turbulent flame speed data of individual fuel-air mixtures approximately follow a Re-T,f(0.5) scaling, for which the average radius is the length scale and thermal diffusivity is the transport property of the turbulence Reynolds number. At a given Re-T,Re-f, it is experimentally observed that the normalized turbulent flame speed decreases with increasing Markstein number, which could be explained by considering Markstein diffusivity as the leading dissipation mechanism for the large wave number flame surface fluctuations. Consequently, by replacing thermal diffusivity with the Markstein diffusivity in the turbulence Reynolds number definition above, it is found that normalized turbulent flame speeds could be scaled by Re-T,M(0.5) irrespective of the fuel, equivalence ratio, pressure, and turbulence intensity for positive Markstein number flames.

Aqueous dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) exhibit strong pH-dependent fluorescence in the visible that originates, in part, from the oxygenated functionalities present. Here we examine the spectral migration on nanosecond time-scales of the pH dependent features in the fluorescence spectra. We show, from time-resolved emission spectra (TRES) constructed from the wavelength dependent fluorescence decay curves, that the migration is associated with excited state proton transfer. Both `intramolecular' and `intermolecular' transfer involving the quasi-molecular oxygenated aromatic fragments are observed. As a prerequisite to the time-resolved measurements, we have correlated the changes in the steady state fluorescence spectra with the sequence of dissociation events that occur in GO dispersions at different values of pH.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) due to its multifunctional characteristics has been presented as a flame sensor by combining both radiation and chemical sensitivity. Chemical functionalization enhances the sensitivity of CNT sensor toward any chemical modifications that are induced by the flame. Response of the sensor is revealed to be dependent on the measurement direction (longitudinal and transverse) as well as the radiation intensity. A nonlinear relation between the sensitivity and its distance from the source is used to calibrate the intensity of the flame. The present method allows a simpler approach for the flame detection by utilizing a calibration scheme to operate at any particular bias current and tune its sensitivity with respect to any working distance at a particular bias current. Solvent polarity has been known to influence the triplet state structure and reactivity. Here, we present our experimental and theoretical study on the effect of solvent on the lowest triplet excited state structure of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX). Time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy has been employed to understand the triplet state electronic structure; whereas solvent-induced structural changes have been studied using time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy. Both the DFT and TD-DFT calculations have been performed in the solution phase employing self-consistent reaction field implicit solvation model to support the experimental data. It has been observed that CO stretching frequencies of the excited triplet state are sensitive to the solvent polarity and increase with the increase in the solvent polarity. Both TA and TR3 studies reveal that specific solvent effect (H-bonding) is more pronounced in comparison to the nonspecific solvent effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
