Threshold behaviour of L x-ray excitation in Xe - Ag collisions

In the collision system Xe - Ag, the thresholds for excitation of quasimolecular L radiation and characteristic Ag L radiation have been found to lie at about 5 MeV and 1 MeV, respectively. These results are discussed on the basis of ab initio calculations of the screened interaction potential and the electron-correlation diagram.

Determination of Holocene cave temperatures from Kr and Xe concentrations in stalagmite fluid inclusions

From the concentrations of dissolved atmospheric noble gases in water, a so-called “noble gas temperature” (NGT) can be determined that corresponds to the temperature of the water when it was last in contact with the atmosphere. Here we demonstrate that the NGT concept is applicable to water inclusions in cave stalagmites, and yields NGTs that are in good agreement with the ambient air temperatures in the caves. We analysed samples from two Holocene and one undated stalagmite. The three stalagmites originate from three caves located in different climatic regions having modern mean annual air temperatures of 27 °C, 12 °C and 8 °C, respectively. In about half of the samples analysed Kr and Xe concentrations originated entirely from the two well-defined noble gas components air-saturated water and atmospheric air, which allowed NGTs to be determined successfully from Kr and Xe concentrations. One stalagmite seems to be particularly suitable for NGT determination, as almost all of its samples yielded the modern cave temperature. Notably, this stalagmite contains a high proportion of primary water inclusions, which seem to preserve the temperature-dependent signature well in their Kr and Xe concentrations. In future work on stalagmites detailed microscopic inspection of the fluid inclusions prior to noble gas analysis is therefore likely to be crucial in increasing the number of successful NGT determinations.

Interactive Institute’s Power Studio i Eskilstuna har ett projekt som heter AWARE. AWARE är ett designorienterat forskningsprojekt som syftar till att öka människors medvetenhet om hur elenergi används i vardagen, speciellt i hemmen. Målet är att uppmärksamma människor om deras elanvändning samt ge de ett medel att kunna kontrollera och göra deras elanvändning mer effektiv.Som en del i AWARE ska en intelligent bärbar armatur som är batteridriven tas fram som ska få människor att tänka på att elenergi inte är något konstant och outtömligt. Det ska finnas visuella effekter som på ett bra sätt kan väcka dessa tankar. Vid laddning av dessa armaturer kan t.ex. ett svagt pulserande ljus användas för att ge effekten av att armaturen tankas med elenergi. Detta examensarbete bygger på att producera två prototyper av dessa armaturer som kan kommunicera trådlöst med varandra.Examensarbetet resulterade i två stycken fungerande prototyper. Xe NMR spectroscopy of adsorbed xenon: Possibilites for exploration of microporous carbon materials

Despite the extensive use of 129Xe NMR for characterization of high surface-to-volume porous solids, particularly zeolites, this method has not been widely used to explore the properties of microporous carbon materials. In this study, commercial amorphous carbons of different origin (produced from different precursors) and a series of activated carbons obtained by successive cyclic air oxidation/pyrolysis treatments of a single precursor were examined. Models of 129Xe chemical shift as a function of local Xe density, mean pore size, and temperature are discussed. The virial coefficient arising from binary xenon collisions, σXe-Xe, varied linearly with the mean pore size given by N2 adsorption analysis; σ Xe-Xe appeared to be a better probe of the mean pore size than the chemical shift extrapolated to zero pressure, σS. © 2008 MAIK Nauka.
