Metrology of XUV beams (X-ray lasers, high-harmonic generation and VUV free-electron lasers) is of crucial importance for the development of applications. We have thus developed several new optical systems enabling us to measure the optical properties of XUV beams. By use of a Michelson interferometer working as a Fourier-transform spectrometer, the line shapes of different X-ray lasers have been measured with a very high accuracy (Deltalambda/lambdasimilar to10(-6)). Achievement of the first XUV wavefront sensor has enabled us to measure the beam quality of laser-pumped as well as discharge-pumped X-ray lasers. A capillary discharge X-ray laser has demonstrated a very good wavefront allowing us to achieve an intensity as high as 3x10(14) W cm(-2) by focusing with a f=5 cm mirror. The sensor accuracy has been measured using a calibrated spherical wave generated by diffraction. The accuracy has been estimated to be as good as lambda/120 at 13 nm. Commercial developments are underway. At Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquee, we are setting up a new beamline based on high-harmonic generation in order to start the femtosecond, coherent XUV optic .

Recent experiments undertaken at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to produce X-ray lasing over the 5-30 nm wavelength range are reviewed. The efficiency of lasing is optimized when the main pumping pulse interacts with a preformed plasma. Experiments using double 75-ps pulses and picosecond pulses superimposed on 300-ps background pulses are described. The use of travelling wave pumping with the approximately picosecond pulse experiments is necessary as the gain duration becomes comparable to the time for the X-ray laser pulse to propagate along the target length. Results from a model taking account of laser saturation and deviations from the speed of light c of the travelling wave and X-ray laser group velocity are presented. We show that X-ray laser pulses as short as 2-3 ps can be produced with optical pumping pulses of approximate to1-ps.

Double laser pulses of duration similar to 75 ps and short laser pulses similar to 1 ps superimposed on longer duration background pulses have been shown to efficiently pump lasing in Ne-like and Ni-like ions. For the 75 ps pumping, X-ray laser output without travelling wave pumping is shown to be well-described by a model of ASE output. With I ps pumping, the X-ray laser output with different velocity travelling wave pumping is well-fitted with an extension to the ASE model allowing for travelling wave excitation of the gain along the plasma line. The model is used to investigate the production of short (<1 ps) x-ray laser pulses and the effects of non-ideal travelling wave velocities on the X-ray laser output. Resonance line spectra of emission perpendicular to the plasma line are measured and simulated. It is shown that an accurate opacity model for the more intense Ne-like ions is needed to correctly simulate the spectra.

Effective collision strengths computed by the R-matrix method are presented for the electron-impact excitation of nitrogen-like S X. The total wave function used in the expansion includes the lowest 11 eigenstates of S X which arise from the 2s(2)2p(3), 2s2p(4), 2p(5) and 2s(2)2p(2)3s configurations. These 11 LS target states correspond to 22 fine-structure levels, giving 231 possible transitions. All the effective collision strengths for these transitions are tabulated in the range log T(K) = 4.6 to log T(K) = 6.7. The energy level values and oscillator strengths for allowed transitions are also tabulated. The effective collision strengths were calculated by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of velocities. The present effective collision strengths are the only results currently available for these fine-structure transition rates. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

A similar to 3 ps travelling wave chirped pulse amplified pulse at 6 x 10(14) W cm(-2) superimposed on similar to 300 ps background pulses is shown to be an efficient method to pump transient collisional excitation X-ray lasers in both Ni-like and Ne-like ions. Measurements of X-ray laser output as a function of plasma length are fitted with results of an amplified spontaneous emission model of the laser output taking account of travelling wave pumping effects. A small signal gain coefficient similar to 42 cm(-1) and a effective gain length product of similar to 18 are measured for the Ni-like Sn laser at 120 Angstrom. Simulations from a hydrodynamic and atomic physics code (EHYBRID) coupled to a ray trace code show that a spatially averaged small signal gain similar to 65 cm(-1) can be obtained in Ne-like Ge provided the optimum pumping pulse arrangement is used. We have tested soft X-ray lasing in neon-like germanium with cylindrical targets where wave guiding and plasma confinement may affect lasing. An intense soft X-ray laser beam of 0.05 MW peak power and a narrow beam divergence (8 mrad) was produced at 23.6 nm with a 4 cm long straight cylindrical target of 0.72 mm inner diameter. Bending the cylindrical target to form a toroidal shape increased the lasing intensity by a factor of 3 accompanied with reduction of the beam divergence from 8 to 6 mrad.

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multiterawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving mu J/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

We have resolved the solid-liquid phase transition of carbon at pressures around 150GPa. High-pressure samples of different temperatures were created by laser-driven shock compression of graphite and varying the initial density from 1.30g/cm3 to 2.25g/cm3. In this way, temperatures from 5700K to 14,500K could be achieved for relatively constant pressure according to hydrodynamic simulations. From measuring the elastic X-ray scattering intensity of vanadium K-alpha radiation at 4.95keVat a scattering angle of 126°, which is very sensitive to the solid-liquid transition, we can determine whether the sample had transitioned to the fluid phase. We find that samples of initial density 1.3g/cm3 and 1.85g/cm3 are liquid in the compressed states, whereas samples close to the ideal graphite crystal density of 2.25g/cm3 remain solid, probably in a diamond-like state.

PURPOSE: To present the long-term follow-up of 10 adolescents and young adults with documented cognitive and behavioral regression as children due to nonlesional focal, mainly frontal, epilepsy with continuous spike-waves during slow wave sleep (CSWS). METHODS: Past medical and electroencephalography (EEG) data were reviewed and neuropsychological tests exploring main cognitive functions were administered. KEY FINDINGS: After a mean duration of follow-up of 15.6 years (range, 8-23 years), none of the 10 patients had recovered fully, but four regained borderline to normal intelligence and were almost independent. Patients with prolonged global intellectual regression had the worst outcome, whereas those with more specific and short-lived deficits recovered best. The marked behavioral disorders resolved in all but one patient. Executive functions were neither severely nor homogenously affected. Three patients with a frontal syndrome during the active phase (AP) disclosed only mild residual executive and social cognition deficits. The main cognitive gains occurred shortly after the AP, but qualitative improvements continued to occur. Long-term outcome correlated best with duration of CSWS. SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings emphasize that cognitive recovery after cessation of CSWS depends on the severity and duration of the initial regression. None of our patients had major executive and social cognition deficits with preserved intelligence, as reported in adults with early destructive lesions of the frontal lobes. Early recognition of epilepsy with CSWS and rapid introduction of effective therapy are crucial for a best possible outcome.

High temperature superconductors were discovered in 1986, but despite considerable research efforts, both experimental and theoretical, these materials remain poorly understood. Because their electronic structure is both inhomogeneous and highly correlated, a full understanding will require knowledge of quasiparticle properties both in real space and momentum space. In this thesis, we will present a theoretical analysis of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data in BSCCO. We introduce the Bogoliubov-De Gennes Hamiltonian and solve it numerically on a two-dimensional 20 x 20 lattice under a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. We consider a vortex at the center of our model. We introduce a Zn impurity in our lattice as a microscopic probe of the physical properties of BSCCO. By direct numerical diagonalization of the lattice BogoliubovDe Gennes Hamiltonian for different positions of the impurity, we can calculate the interaction between the vortex and the impurity in a d-wave superconductor.

The one-electron reduced local energy function, t ~ , is introduced and has the property < tL)=(~>. It is suggested that the accuracy of SL reflects the local accuracy of an approximate wavefunction. We establish that <~~>~ <~2,> and present a bound formula, E~ , which is such that where Ew is Weinstein's lower bound formula to the ground state. The nature of the bound is not guaranteed but for sufficiently accurate wavefunctions it will yield a lower bound. ,-+ 1'S I I Applications to X LW Hz. and ne are presented.

Fermi patches in quasi-two dimensional charge density waves (CDW) have not described the connection to superconductivity (SC) according to theory adequately at this point in time. The connection between CDW and SC in the quasi-two dimensional material CuxTiSe2 is an interesting one which might reveal mechanisms in unconventional superconductors. A previous Brock graduate student grew crystals of CuxTiSe2. The precise doping of the samples was not known. In order to determine the doping parameter x in CuxTiSe2, a sensitive resistivity measurement system was necessary. A new resistivity measurement system was designed and implemented utilizing an Infrared Labs HDL-10 He3 cryostat. By comparing with data from the literature, doping of two samples was investigated using the new measurement system and a Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS). Methods for determining the doping revealed that the old resistivity system would not be able to determine the CDW transition temperature of highly doped samples or doping for elongated samples due to electronic noise. Doping in one sample was found to be between x=0.06 and x=0.065. Values of doping in the second sample had a discrepancy but could be explained by incorrect sample orientation.

L’ablation laser de verres métalliques de CuxZr1−x (x = 0.33, 0.50 et 0.67) et d’un alliage métallique cristallin de CuZr2 dans la structure C11b a été étudiée par dynamique moléculaire (DM) combinée à un modèle à deux températures (TTM). Le seuil d’ablation (Fth) a été déterminé pour chacun des 4 échantillons et s'est avéré plus bas pour les échantillons plus riches en Cu étant donné que la cohésion du Cu est plus faible que celle du Zr dans tous les échantillons. Pour x=0.33, Fth est plus bas pour le cristal que pour l’amorphe car le couplage électron-phonon est plus faible dans ce dernier, ce qui implique que l’énergie est transférée plus lentement du système électronique vers le système ionique pour le a-CuZr2 que le c-CuZr2. La vitesse de l’onde de pression créée par l’impact du laser croît avec la fluence dans l’échantillon cristallin, contrairement aux échantillons amorphes dans lesquels sa vitesse moyenne est relativement constante avec la fluence. Ceci est expliqué par le fait que le module de cisaillement croît avec la pression pour le cristal, ce qui n’est pas le cas pour les verres métalliques étudiés. Finalement, la zone affectée par la chaleur (HAZ) a été étudiée via la profondeur de fusion et les déformations plastiques. La plus faible température de fusion des échantillons amorphes implique que la profondeur de fusion est plus importante dans ceux-ci que dans l’échantillon cristallin. Dans les verres métalliques, les déformations plastiques ont été identifiées sous forme de zones de transformation par cisaillement (STZ) qui diffusent et fusionnent à plus haute fluence. Aucune déformation plastique importante n’a été identifiée dans le c-CuZr2 mis à part de légères déformations près du front de fusion causées par les contraintes résiduelles. Ce travail a ainsi permis d’améliorer notre compréhension de l’ablation laser sur les verres métalliques et de l’étendue des dommages qu’elle peut entraîner.
