De 2003 à 2006, j’ai été le pasteur de l’Église protestante francophone de Washington, DC (EPFW). Fondée en 1927, l’EPFW est une Église complètement autonome sur les plans institutionnel, financier et théologique. Elle compte une centaine de foyers-membres et une centaine de foyers-amis: Européens, Africains et Américains. Deux forces opposées s’exercent dans l’EPFW: une force centrifuge qui sépare les individus et une force centripète qui les réunit en communauté. La force centripète comprend, entre autres, le protestantisme, le désir de se retrouver entre gens de la même origine, la volonté de continuer à utiliser la langue française, le goût pour les rencontres interculturelles et le climat religieux américain. La force centrifuge se compose notamment de la diversité des origines ethniques et religieuses, de la dispersion géographique, de la brièveté des séjours à Washington et de l’hyperactivité généralisée. Dans cet article, je présente la manière dont nous – pasteur, Conseil de paroisse, responsables-laïcs et communauté – avons essayé de rassembler des individus en une communauté et les références théologiques qui m’ont aidé dans mon travail.
