- Background Childcare providers are often “first responders” for suspected child abuse, and how they understand the concept of “reasonable suspicion” will influence their decisions regarding which warning signs warrant reporting. - Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate how childcare providers interpret the threshold for reporting suspected abuse, and to consider the implications of these findings for professional training and development. - Method A convenience sample of 355 childcare providers completed the Reasonable Suspicion of Child Abuse survey to quantify what likelihood of child abuse constitutes “reasonable suspicion.” Responses were examined for internal consistency, evidence of a group standard, and associations with professional and personal demographics. - Results On a Rank Order Scale, responses for what constitutes “reasonable suspicion” ranged from requiring that abuse be “the” most likely cause (8 %) of an injury, to the second most likely (9 %), third (18 %), fourth (18 %), to even the seventh (8 %) or eighth (5 %) most likely cause of an injury. On a numerical probability scale, 21 % of respondents indicated that “abuse” would need to be ≥83 % likely before reasonable suspicion existed; 40 % stated that a likelihood between 53–82 % was needed; 27 % identified the necessary likelihood between 33–52 %; and 12 % set a threshold between 1–32 %. - Conclusions The present finding that no consensus exists for interpreting “reasonable suspicion” suggests that a broadly accepted interpretive framework is needed in order to help prepare childcare providers to know when to report suspected abuse.

Government administrative data over a decade (2003-2012) were accessed and analysed to map trends in reporting of different types of child abuse and neglect (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect) by different reporter groups (both mandated reporters e.g., police, teachers, doctors, nurses depending on the jurisdiction, and non-mandated reporters e.g., family members, neighbours, depending on the jurisdiction), and the outcomes of these reports (whether investigated, and whether substantiated or not). A software and a microprocessor based hardware for waveform synthesis using Walsh functions are described. The software is based on Walsh function generation using Hadamard matrices and on the truncated Walsh series expansion for the waveform to be synthesized. The hardware employs six microprocessor controlled programmable Walsh function generators (PWFGs) for generating the first six non-vanishing terms of the truncated Walsh series. Improved approximation to a given waveform may be achieved by employing additional PWFGs.

El presente estudio se realizó en el ingenio Benjamín Zeledón con el objetivo de determinar los niveles de daño causados por Diatraea spp. y la incidencia del parasitismo natural para su control durante el periodo julio-diciembre de 1995. Evaluándose los parámetros: infestación, intensidad de infestación e índice de infestación, así como los niveles del parasitismo natural de Diatraea spp. en diversas variedades de caña en una área que representa el 16.30% del área total productiva del Ingenio. Determinándose una infestación promedio de 5.35%, una intensidad de infestación promedio de 14.39% y un índice de infestación promedio de 0.85, el cual es considerado internacionalmente como bajo. La variedades L 68-40, J 60-5, L 68-90 y la mezcla de diversas variedades fueron las más afectadas por Diatraea spp. Determinándose en estas variedades índices de infestación superiores al promedio general (0.85)y que corresponden a 1.26, 1.14, 1.13 y 1.09 respectivamente. Sin embargo, SP 70-4790, MEX. 53-4-73 y MEX. 68-P-23 fueron las variedades menos afectadas con 0.51, 0.23 y 0.24 de índice de infestación respectivamente. Por otro lado, se determinó un bajo nivel de parasitismo natural que se concentró sólo en el trimestre julio-septiembre con 19, 21 y 251% de parasitismo natural a partir de 58,19 y 4 larvas colectadas durante estos meses respectivamente. Identificándose a los parasitoides larvales: Billaea claripalpis Wulp, Cotesia flavipes Camerón y Apanteles diatraeae Muesebeck. Aunque no se pudo determinar la incidencia de los parasitoides ovifagos se determinó la presencia de Telenomus sp. y una especie de la familia Trichogrammatidae en los campos muestreados.
