Competition with forward contracts: a laboratory analysis motivated by electricity market design

We use experiments to study the efficiency effects for a market as a whole of adding the possibility of forward contracting to a pre-existing spot market. We deal separately with the cases where spot market competition is in quantities and where it is in supply functions. In both cases we compare the effect of adding a contract market with the introduction of an additional competitor, changing the market structure from a triopoly to a quadropoly. We find that, as theory suggests, for both types of competition the introduction of a forward market significantly lowers prices. The combination of supply function competition with a forward market leads to high efficiency levels.

Microtriatoma pratai Sherlock & Guitton, 1982 não pertence a este gênero de Triatominae. Não é inseto hematófago. Pertence ao gênero Aradomorpha Champion, 1899 e à espécie A. championi descrita por Lent & Wygodzinsky em 1944, inseto predador da subfamília Reduviidae.

Taxonomic review of Lutzomyia walkeri (Newstead, 1914) [= Lutzomyia marajoensis (Damasceno & Causey, 1944)] and the resurrection of Lutzomyia dubitans (Sherlock, 1962) (Diptera: Psychodidae)

Examination of the holotype of Lutzomyia marajoensis (Damasceno & Causey, 1944) shows this species to be identical to Lutzomyia walkeri (Newstead, 1914). The name Lutxomyia dubitans (Sherlock, 1962) is resurrected for another sand fly which has been incorrectly named L. marajoensis since 1961. Newly discovered structural differences between males and females of L walkeri from L. dubitans are presented.

Jaume Brossa (1868-1919) regeneracionista i revolucionari

Treball de recerca realitzat per una alumna d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit científic del Jovent l'any 2009. El present treball és un estudi de la personalitat humana, literària i filosòfica de Jaume Brossa així com un anàlisi del medi sociohistòric que li va tocar viure. El mètode utilitzat ha estat, en primer lloc, un rastreig de material original, articles publicats entre els anys 1892 i 1902 en diversos òrgans de premsa de Barcelona i Madrid. Una vegada obtingut el material requerit, s’ha sondejat per dins de les seves línies fins a trobar quin era el seu pensament en molts aspectes, a saber: el seu posicionament entorn els grans centres d’atenció del seu temps: el nacionalisme, el moviment obrer, l’estètica modernista en les seves parcel•les de música, literatura, teatre etc., tots aquests camps, tractats des de la base de la seva actitud regeneracionista i revolucionària. L’estudi s’ha realitzat des d’un enfocament crític: intentar esbrinar quines han estat les causes per les quals un autor certament notable de les nostres lletres ha estat marginat o, si més no, minimitzat en el seu abast intel•lectual. I, tal com es planteja al començament del treball, aquest consta d’una recerca de causes, implicacions, contextos etc. que ens permetin esbrinar per què Jaume Brossa ha estat desacreditat.

Maurice Blanchot: autonomie et responsabilité (1944-1948)

RÉSUMÉ En conjuguant les méthodes de l'histoire littéraire, de la sociologie des champs et de l'analyse littéraire, ce mémoire se propose d'étudier l'élaboration de la « posture » de Maurice Blanchot dans l'immédiat après-guerre (1944-1948). Le passé de Blanchot, marqué par des positions politiques d'extrême droite dans les années 30, et dans une certaine mesure encore sous l'Occupation, le conduit à un repositionnement conséquent dans le champ littéraire de la Libération marqué par l'Epuration des écrivains collaborateurs. Ce repositionnement se traduit par l'élaboration de la « posture » de l'écrivain en retrait, qui se présente comme la manifestation d'une autonomie littéraire radicale. Toutefois, cette posture du retrait demeure une forme de participation au champ littéraire et Blanchot, malgré sa volonté d'une parfaite autonomie de son oeuvre vis-à-vis des impératifs économiques ou idéologiques du temps, n'en est pas moins amené à réélaborer ses postulats critiques de même que sa production proprement dite (Le Très-Haut, L'Arrêt de mort), en interaction avec les nouvelles forces dominantes du champ littéraire de la Libération. Il est notamment conduit à se positionner vis-à-vis de la nouvelle avant-garde qui a émergé de la Résistance, dominée par Sartre et ses Temps Modernes, qui promeut un nouveau modèle, celui de l'écrivain engagé.

Report on Symphysiotomy in Ireland 1944-1984 - Professor Oonagh Walsh

This Final Report is the culmination of a two-stage process aimed at fulfilling the request of the previous Minister for Health and Children (Mary Harney) in relation to the practice of symphysiotomy in Ireland. La force motrice hydraulique au service du développement économique helvétique : L'exemple du réseau d'eau sous pression à Lausanne 1868-1914

The success story of hydroelectricity long influenced and dominated Swiss scholarly literature devoted to the history of technology. This means of conducting power, which emerged at the end of the 19th century and is still dominating today, has attracted much more attention than technologies that have been shadowed by its success. In spite of their important contribution to Swiss economic development, the distribution networks of pressurized water have been neglected by scholars. This article contributes to close this historiographic gap by analyzing the introduction of pressurized water distribution in 1876 in Lausanne, in the context of the building of the first Swiss cable funicular between Lausanne and Ouchy. This article shows how pressurized water distribution transformed socio-economic practices in the urban areas in which it was adopted. Indeed, this innovation, which allowed the use of distant hydraulic resources, enabled the rationalization of industrial and artisanal production as well as improved the density of the urban industrial base. By facilitating the introduction of electric lighting, pressurized water networks played a key role in the early development, and further successes, of the Swiss hydroelectric industry.
