Polyvalente Mrg-Richard, 1980-1981 : abandon scolaire au C.P.C.

À titre de dernier regard, il serait intéressant de se rappeler que le problème de l'abandon prématuré des études, au niveau secondaire en particulier, semble une caractéristique commune à maints milieux scolaires; il nous a été donné de voir que la polyvalente Mrg-Richard ne faisait pas exception à la règle. À titre d'agent éducateur au C.P.C., nous ne pouvons demeurer insensible face à ce phénomène, puisque c'est justement le secteur qui tient le premier rang dans la représentativité des décrocheurs, notamment à la P.M.R. Cette situation délicate nous a donc invités à effectuer une investigation à l'égard de ce problème afin de bien l'identifier en fonction du vécu des décrocheurs. Forte de la connaissance des études effectuées par différents auteurs sur le sujet, nous en sommes arrivés à définir l'abandon scolaire comme étant le fait pour un étudiant de mettre un terme, volontairement ou involontairement, temporairement ou définitivement, à son programme d'étude en se retirant sans équivoque du système scolaire, avant l'obtention du diplôme de son niveau d'étude. Notre point de départ étant ainsi marqué, nous avons procédé à faire l'assemblage de facteurs endogènes, exogènes ou circonstanciels responsables des causes latentes ou manifestes du décrochage. À cet égard nous retenons que la personnalité de l'étudiant décrocheur est caractérisée par l'immaturité, une mauvaise perception de soi, une attirance vers les choses concrètes ou bien une nette incapacité d'actualiser son potentiel. Le milieu familial y est également pour quelque chose, avons-nous vu, ne fusse que par son manque de communication, son climat insécure ou menaçant. De même, le milieu scolaire constitue également un facteur capital de décrochage. En effet, le manque ou la faiblesse des relations entre le futur décrocheur et ses pairs ou ses professeurs, alliée à des échecs scolaires, des retards pédagogiques, des problèmes de comportement ou d'absentéisme amènent progressivement l'adolescent à se mettre à l'écart pour s'évader de ce milieu scolaire opprimant dès que la première occasion se présente. Prevalence and audiological features in carriers of GJB2 mutations, c.35delG and c.101T>C (p.M34T), in a UK population study

OBJECTIVES: To determine the carrier rate of the GJB2 mutation c.35delG and c.101T>C in a UK population study; to determine whether carriers of the mutation had worse hearing or otoacoustic emissions compared to non-carriers. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: University of Bristol, UK. PARTICIPANTS: Children in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. 9202 were successfully genotyped for the c.35delG mutation and c.101>T and classified as either carriers or non-carriers. OUTCOME MEASURES: Hearing thresholds at age 7, 9 and 11 years and otoacoustic emissions at age 9 and 11. RESULTS: The carrier frequency of the c.35delG mutation was 1.36% (95% CI 1.13 to 1.62) and c.101T>C was 2.69% (95% CI 2.37 to 3.05). Carriers of c.35delG and c.101T>C had worse hearing than non-carriers at the extra-high frequency of 16 kHz. The mean difference in hearing at age 7 for the c.35delG mutation was 8.53 dB (95% CI 2.99, 14.07) and 12.57 dB at age 9 (95% CI 8.10, 17.04). The mean difference for c.101T>C at age 7 was 3.25 dB (95% CI -0.25 to 6.75) and 7.61 dB (95% CI 4.26 to 10.96) at age 9. Otoacoustic emissions were smaller in the c.35delG mutation carrier group: at 4 kHz the mean difference was -4.95 dB (95% CI -6.70 to -3.21) at age 9 and -3.94 dB (95% CI -5.78 to -2.10) at age 11. There was weak evidence for differences in otoacoustic emissions amplitude for c.101T>C carriers. CONCLUSION: Carriers of the c.35delG mutation and c.101T>C have worse extra-high-frequency hearing than non-carriers. This may be a predictor for changes in lower-frequency hearing in adulthood. The milder effects observed in carriers of c.101T>C are in keeping with its classification as a mutation causing mild/moderate hearing loss in homozygosity or compound heterozygosity.

Circulating Interleukin-6 and High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Decrease After Periodontal Therapy in Otherwise Healthy Subjects

Background: Periodontal disease has been associated with many chronic inflammatory systemic diseases, and a common chronic inflammation pathway has been suggested for these conditions. However, few studies have evaluated whether periodontal disease, in the absence of other known inflammatory conditions and smoking, affects circulating markers of chronic inflammation. This study compared chronic inflammation markers in control individuals and patients with periodontal disease and observed whether non-surgical periodontal therapy affected inflammatory disease markers after 3 months. Methods: Plasma and serum of 20 controls and 25 patients with periodontal disease were obtained prior to and 3 months after non-surgical periodontal therapy. All patients were non-smokers, they did not use any medication, and they had no history or detectable signs and symptoms of systemic diseases. Periodontal and systemic parameters included probing depth, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level, hematologic parameters, as well as the following inflammatory markers: interleukin (IL)-6, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), CD40 ligand, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin), soluble vascular adhesion molecule (sVCAM)-1, and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM)-1. Results: There were no differences in the hematologic parameters of the patients in the control and periodontal disease groups. Among the tested inflammatory markers, IL-6 concentrations were higher in the periodontal disease group at baseline compared to the controls (P=0.006). Therapy was highly effective (P<0.001 for all the analyzed clinical parameters), and a decrease in circulating IL-6 and hs-CRP concentrations was observed 3 months after therapy (P=0.001 and P=0.006, respectively). Our results also suggest that the CD40 ligand marker may have been different in the control and periodontal disease groups prior to the therapy (P=0.009). Conclusions: In apparently otherwise healthy patients, periodontal disease is associated with increased circulating concentrations of IL-6 and hs-CRP, which decreased 3 months after non-surgical periodontal therapy. With regard to the CD40 ligand, MCP-1, sP-selectin, sVCAM-1, and sICAM-1, no changes were seen in the periodontal disease group between baseline and 3 months after therapy. A 3-phase model for VIS/NIR mu C-Si : H p-i-n detectors

The spectral response and the photocurrent delivered by entirely microcrystalline p-i-n-Si:H detectors an analysed under different applied bias and light illumination conditions. The spectral response and the internal collection depend not only on the energy range but also on the illumination side. Under [p]- and [n]-side irradiation, the internal collection characteristics have an atypical shape. It is high for applied bias and lower than the open circuit voltage, shows a steep decrease near the open circuit voltage (higher under [n]-side illumination) and levels off for higher voltages. Additionally, the numerical modeling of the VIS/NIR detector, based on the band discontinuities near the grain boundaries and interfaces, complements the study and gives insight into the internal physical process.

Measurement of the ratio of the p(p)over-bar -> W + c-jet cross section to the inclusive p(p)over-bar -> W + jets cross section

We present a measurement of the fraction of inclusive W +jets events produced with net charm quantum number 11, denoted W + c-jet, in p collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using approximately 1 fb(-1) of data collected by the do detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We identify the W +jets events via the leptonic W boson decays. Candidate W + c-jet events are selected by requiring a jet containing a muon in association with a reconstructed W boson and exploiting the charge correlation between this muon and W boson decay lepton to perform a nearly model-independent background subtraction. We measure the fraction of W + c-jet events in the inclusive W +jets sample for jet PT > 20 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 2.5 to be 0.074 +/- 0.019(stat.) +/-(0.012)(0.014) (syst.), in agreement with theoretical predictions. The probability that background fluctuations could produce the observed fraction of W + c-jet events is estimated to be 2.5 x 10(-4), which corresponds to a 3.5 sigma statistical significance.
