We have developed a method to compute the albedo contrast between dust devil tracks and their surrounding regions on Mars. It is mainly based on Mathematical Morphology operators and uses all the points of the edges of the tracks to compute the values of the albedo contrast. It permits the extraction of more accurate and complete information, when compared to traditional point sampling, not only providing better statistics but also permitting the analysis of local variations along the entirety of the tracks. This measure of contrast, based on relative quantities, is much more adequate to establish comparisons at regional scales and in multi-temporal basis using imagery acquired in rather different environmental and operational conditions. Also, the substantial increase in the details extracted may permit quantifying differential depositions of dust by computing local temporal fading of the tracks with consequences on a better estimation of the thickness of the top most layer of dust and the minimum value needed to create dust devils tracks. The developed tool is tested on 110 HiRISE images depicting regions in the Aeolis, Argyre, Eridania, Noachis and Hellas quadrangles. As a complementary evaluation, we also performed a temporal analysis of the albedo in a region of Russell crater, where high seasonal dust devil activity was already observed before, comprising the years 2007-2012. The mean albedo of the Russell crater is in this case indicative of dust devil tracks presence and, therefore, can be used to quantify dust devil activity. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Blockade of central angiotensin receptors with the specific antagonist [Leu8]-ANG II abolished water ingestion and water and sodium excretion induced by infusion of angiotensin II (ANGII) into the lateral ventricle (LV) of rats. The antagonist reduced but did not suppress the salt appetite induced by ANGII infusion. Subcutaneous injection of deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) caused increases in water and 3% NaCl ingestion and decreases in sodium excretion. When central ANGII infusion was combined with peripheral DOCA, the water intake was similar to that induced by ANGII alone and the ingestion of 3% NaCl was increased, whereas sodium excretion was inhibited. When ANGII was infused alone, a detailed temporal analysis of fluid and sodium balance showed a negative balance similar those saline controls that persisted throughout the experiment. Combined administration of ANGII and DOCA induce significant changes in water and sodium balance. Sodium and water maintained a positive balance through out the 8-h experiment. The data support an interaction of central ANGII and DOCA on sodium intake and water and sodium balance. © 1994.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides continuous measurements made with an Aquatic Laser Fluorescence Analyzer (ALFA) (Chekalyuk et al., 2014), connected in-line to the TARA flow through system during 2013. The ALFA instrument provides dual-wavelength excitation (405 and 514 nm) of laser-stimulated emission (LSE) for spectral and temporal analysis. It offers in vivo fluorescence assessments of phytoplankton pigments, biomass, photosynthetic yield (Fv/Fm), phycobiliprotein (PBP)-containing phytoplankton groups, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (Chekalyuk and Hafez, 2008; 2013A). Spectral deconvolution (SDC) is used to assess the overlapped spectral bands of aquatic fluorescence constituents and water Raman scattering (R). The Fv/Fm measurements are spectrally corrected for non-chlorophyll fluorescence background produced by CDOM and other constituents (Chekalyuk and Hafez, 2008). The sensor was cleaned weakly following the manufacturer recommended protocol.

ABSTRACT The purpose of the present thesis is to study the dynamics of the logarithmic layer of wall-bounded turbulent flows. Specifically, to propose a new structural model based on four different coherent structures: sweeps, ejections, clusters of vortices and velocity streaks. The tool used is the direct numerical simulation of time-resolved turbulent channels. Since the first work by Theodorsen (1952), coherent structures have played an important role in the understanding of turbulence organization and its dynamics. Nowadays, data from individual snapshots of direct numerical simulations allow to study the threedimensional statistical properties of those objects, but their dynamics can only be fully understood by tracking them in time. Although the temporal evolution has already been studied for small structures at moderate Reynolds numbers, e.g., Robinson (1991), a temporal analysis of three-dimensional structures spanning from the smallest to the largest scales across the logarithmic layer has yet to be performed and is the goal of the present thesis. The most interesting problems lie in the logarithmic region, which is the seat of cascades of vorticity, energy, and momentum. Different models involving coherent structures have been proposed to represent the organization of wall-bounded turbulent flows in the logarithmic layer. One of the most extended ones was conceived by Adrian et al. (2000) and built on packets of hairpins that grow from the wall and work cooperatively to gen- ´ erate low-momentum ramps. A different view was presented by del Alamo & Jim´enez (2006), who extracted coherent vortical structures from DNSs and proposed a less organized scenario. Although the two models are kinematically fairly similar, they have important dynamical differences, mostly regarding the relevance of the wall. Another open question is whether such a model can be used to explain the cascade process proposed by Kolmogorov (1941b) in terms of coherent structures. The challenge would be to identify coherent structures undergoing a turbulent cascade that can be quantified. To gain a better insight into the previous questions, we have developed a novel method to track coherent structures in time, and used it to characterize the temporal evolutions of eddies in turbulent channels with Reynolds numbers high enough to include a non-trivial range of length scales, and computational domains sufficiently long and wide to reproduce correctly the dynamics of the logarithmic layer. Our efforts have followed four steps. First, we have conducted a campaign of direct numerical simulations of turbulent channels at different Reynolds numbers and box sizes, and assessed the effect of the computational domain in the one-point statistics and spectra. From the results, we have concluded that computational domains with streamwise and spanwise sizes 2vr and vr times the half-height of the channel, respectively, are large enough to accurately capture the dynamical interactions between structures in the logarithmic layer and the rest of the scales. These simulations are used in the subsequent chapters. Second, the three-dimensional structures of intense tangential Reynolds stress in plane turbulent channels (Qs) have been studied by extending the classical quadrant analysis to three dimensions, with emphasis on the logarithmic and outer layers. The eddies are identified as connected regions of intense tangential Reynolds stress. Qs are then classified according to their streamwise and wall-normal fluctuating velocities as inward interactions, outward interactions, sweeps and ejections. It is found that wall-detached Qs are isotropically oriented background stress fluctuations, common to most turbulent flows, and do not contribute to the mean stress. Most of the stress is carried by a selfsimilar family of larger wall-attached Qs, increasingly complex away from the wall, with fractal dimensions « 2. They have shapes similar to ‘sponges of flakes’, while vortex clusters resemble ‘sponges of strings’. Although their number decays away from the wall, the fraction of the stress that they carry is independent of their heights, and a substantial part resides in a few objects extending beyond the centerline, reminiscent of the very large scale motions of several authors. The predominant logarithmic-layer structures are sideby- side pairs of sweeps and ejections, with an associated vortex cluster, and dimensions and stresses similar to Townsend’s conjectured wall-attached eddies. Third, the temporal evolution of Qs and vortex clusters are studied using time-resolved DNS data up to ReT = 4200 (friction Reynolds number). The eddies are identified following the procedure presented above, and then tracked in time. From the geometric intersection of structures in consecutive fields, we have built temporal connection graphs of all the objects, and defined main and secondary branches in a way that each branch represents the temporal evolution of one coherent structure. Once these evolutions are properly organized, they provide the necessary information to characterize eddies from birth to death. The results show that the eddies are born at all distances from the wall, although with higher probability near it, where the shear is strongest. Most of them stay small and do not last for long times. However, there is a family of eddies that become large enough to attach to the wall while they reach into the logarithmic layer, and become the wall-attached structures previously observed in instantaneous flow fields. They are geometrically self-similar, with sizes and lifetimes proportional to their distance from the wall. Most of them achieve lengths well above the Corrsin’ scale, and hence, their dynamics are controlled by the mean shear. Eddies associated with ejections move away from the wall with an average velocity uT (friction velocity), and their base attaches very fast at the beginning of their lives. Conversely, sweeps move towards the wall at -uT, and attach later. In both cases, they remain attached for 2/3 of their lives. In the streamwise direction, eddies are advected and deformed by the local mean velocity. Finally, we interpret the turbulent cascade not only as a way to conceptualize the flow, but as an actual physical process in which coherent structures merge and split. The volume of an eddy can change either smoothly, when they are not merging or splitting, or through sudden changes. The processes of merging and splitting can be thought of as a direct (when splitting) or an inverse (when merging) cascade, following the ideas envisioned by Richardson (1920) and Obukhov (1941). It is observed that there is a minimum length of 30η (Kolmogorov units) above which mergers and splits begin to be important. Moreover, all eddies above 100η split and merge at least once in their lives. In those cases, the total volume gained and lost is a substantial fraction of the average volume of the structure involved, with slightly more splits (direct cascade) than mergers. Most branch interactions are found to be the shedding or absorption of Kolmogorov-scale fragments by larger structures, but more balanced splits or mergers spanning a wide range of scales are also found to be important. The results show that splits are more probable at the end of the life of the eddy, while mergers take place at the beginning of the life. Although the results for the direct and the inverse cascades are not identical, they are found to be very symmetric, which suggests a high degree of reversibility of the cascade process.

After the introduction of mitochondria with a mixture of mutant and wild-type mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into a human rho degree cell line (143B.206), Yoneda et al. [Yoneda, M., Chomyn, A., Martinuzzi, A., Hurko, O. & Attardi, G. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 11164-11168] observed a shift in the proportion of the two mitochondrial genotypes in a number of cybrid clones. In every case where a shift was observed, there was an increase in the proportion of mutant mtDNA. By using the same cell line (143B.206 rho degree), we also generated cybrids that were either stable in their mitochondrial genotype or showed an increase in the proportion of mutant mtDNA. However, temporal analysis of the same mutant mtDNA type in another rho degree cell line revealed a quite distinct outcome. Those clones that showed a change shifted toward higher levels of wild-type rather than mutant mtDNA. These results indicate that the nuclear genetic background of the recipient (rho degree) cell can influence the segregation of mutant and wild-type mitochondrial genomes in cell cybrids.

Beijing is one of the most water-stressed cities in the world. Due to over-exploitation of groundwater, the Beijing region has been suffering from land subsidence since 1935. In this study, the Small Baseline InSAR technique has been employed to process Envisat ASAR images acquired between 2003 and 2010 and TerraSAR-X stripmap images collected from 2010 to 2011 to investigate land subsidence in the Beijing region. The maximum subsidence is seen in the eastern part of Beijing with a rate greater than 100 mm/year. Comparisons between InSAR and GPS derived subsidence rates show an RMS difference of 2.94 mm/year with a mean of 2.41 ± 1.84 mm/year. In addition, a high correlation was observed between InSAR subsidence rate maps derived from two different datasets (i.e., Envisat and TerraSAR-X). These demonstrate once again that InSAR is a powerful tool for monitoring land subsidence. InSAR derived subsidence rate maps have allowed for a comprehensive spatio-temporal analysis to identify the main triggering factors of land subsidence. Some interesting relationships in terms of land subsidence were found with groundwater level, active faults, accumulated soft soil thickness and different aquifer types. Furthermore, a relationship with the distances to pumping wells was also recognized in this work.

Government agencies responsible for riparian environments are assessing the combined utility of field survey and remote sensing for mapping and monitoring indicators of riparian zone condition. The objective of this work was to compare the Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition (TRARC) method to a satellite image based approach. TRARC was developed for rapid assessment of the environmental condition of savanna riparian zones. The comparison assessed mapping accuracy, representativeness of TRARC assessment, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for multi-temporal analysis. Two multi-spectral QuickBird images captured in 2004 and 2005 and coincident field data covering sections of the Daly River in the Northern Territory, Australia were used in this work. Both field and image data were processed to map riparian health indicators (RHIs) including percentage canopy cover, organic litter, canopy continuity, stream bank stability, and extent of tree clearing. Spectral vegetation indices, image segmentation and supervised classification were used to produce RHI maps. QuickBird image data were used to examine if the spatial distribution of TRARC transects provided a representative sample of ground based RHI measurements. Results showed that TRARC transects were required to cover at least 3% of the study area to obtain a representative sample. The mapping accuracy and costs of the image based approach were compared to those of the ground based TRARC approach. Results proved that TRARC was more cost-effective at smaller scales (1-100km), while image based assessment becomes more feasible at regional scales (100-1000km). Finally, the ability to use both the image and field based approaches for multi-temporal analysis of RHIs was assessed. Change detection analysis demonstrated that image data can provide detailed information on gradual change, while the TRARC method was only able to identify more gross scale changes. In conclusion, results from both methods were considered to complement each other if used at appropriate spatial scales.

Neuroimaging literature has identified several regions involved in encoding and recognition processes. A review of the literature illustrated considerable variations in the precise location and mechanisms of these processes, and it was these variations that were investigated in the studies in this thesis. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used as the neuroimaging tool and a preliminary study identified Synthetic Aperture Magnetometry (SAM) and not a traditional dipole fitting technique, as an appropriate tool for identifying the multiple cortical regions involved in recognition memory. It has been suggested that there is hemispheric asymmetry in encoding and recognition processes. There are two main hypotheses: the first suggesting that there is task-specificity, the second that this specificity is determined by stimulus modality. A series of experiments was completed with two main aims: first to produce consistent and complementary recognition memory data with MEG, and second to determine whether there exists any hemispheric asymmetry in recognition memory. The results obtained from five experiments demonstrated activation of prefrontal and middle temporal structures, which were consistent with those reported in previous neuroimaging studies. It was suggested that this diverse activation may be explained by the involvement of a semantic network during recognition memory processes. In support of this, a subsequent study involving a semantic encoding task demonstrated that category-specific differences in cortical activation also existed in the recognition memory phase. Controlling for the involvement of such semantic processes produced predominantly bilateral activation. It was suggested that the apparent hemispheric asymmetry findings reported in the literature may be due to the 'coarse' temporal analysis available with earlier imaging techniques, which over-simplified the networks reported by being unable to recognise the early complex processes associated with semantic processing which these MEG studies were able to identify. The importance of frequency-specific activations, specifically theta synchronisation and alpha desynchronisation, in memory processes was also investigated.

The cell:cell bond between an immune cell and an antigen presenting cell is a necessary event in the activation of the adaptive immune response. At the juncture between the cells, cell surface molecules on the opposing cells form non-covalent bonds and a distinct patterning is observed that is termed the immunological synapse. An important binding molecule in the synapse is the T-cell receptor (TCR), that is responsible for antigen recognition through its binding with a major-histocompatibility complex with bound peptide (pMHC). This bond leads to intracellular signalling events that culminate in the activation of the T-cell, and ultimately leads to the expression of the immune eector function. The temporal analysis of the TCR bonds during the formation of the immunological synapse presents a problem to biologists, due to the spatio-temporal scales (nanometers and picoseconds) that compare with experimental uncertainty limits. In this study, a linear stochastic model, derived from a nonlinear model of the synapse, is used to analyse the temporal dynamics of the bond attachments for the TCR. Mathematical analysis and numerical methods are employed to analyse the qualitative dynamics of the nonequilibrium membrane dynamics, with the specic aim of calculating the average persistence time for the TCR:pMHC bond. A single-threshold method, that has been previously used to successfully calculate the TCR:pMHC contact path sizes in the synapse, is applied to produce results for the average contact times of the TCR:pMHC bonds. This method is extended through the development of a two-threshold method, that produces results suggesting the average time persistence for the TCR:pMHC bond is in the order of 2-4 seconds, values that agree with experimental evidence for TCR signalling. The study reveals two distinct scaling regimes in the time persistent survival probability density prole of these bonds, one dominated by thermal uctuations and the other associated with the TCR signalling. Analysis of the thermal fluctuation regime reveals a minimal contribution to the average time persistence calculation, that has an important biological implication when comparing the probabilistic models to experimental evidence. In cases where only a few statistics can be gathered from experimental conditions, the results are unlikely to match the probabilistic predictions. The results also identify a rescaling relationship between the thermal noise and the bond length, suggesting a recalibration of the experimental conditions, to adhere to this scaling relationship, will enable biologists to identify the start of the signalling regime for previously unobserved receptor:ligand bonds. Also, the regime associated with TCR signalling exhibits a universal decay rate for the persistence probability, that is independent of the bond length.
