The contribution to global energy consumption of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector has increased considerably in the last decade, along with its growing relevance to the overall economy. This trend will continue due to the seemingly ever greater use of these technologies, with broadband data traffic generated by the usage of telecommunication networks as a primary component. In fact, in response to user demand, the telecommunications industry is initiating the deployment of next generation networks (NGNs). However, energy consumption is mostly absent from the debate on these deployments, in spite of the potential impact on both expenses and sustainability. In addition, consumers are unaware of the energy impact of their choices in ultra-broadband services. This paper focuses on forecasting energy consumption in the access part of NGNs by modelling the combined effect of the deployment of two different ultra-broadband technologies (FTTH-GPON and LTE), the evolution of traffic per user, and the energy consumption in each of the networks and user devices. Conclusions are presented on the levels of energy consumption, their cost and the impact of different network design parameters. The effect of technological developments, techno-economic and policy decisions on energy consumption is highlighted. On the consumer side, practical figures and comparisons across technologies are provided. Although the paper focuses on Spain, the analysis can be extended to similar countries.

With recent technological developments within the field of power conditioning and the progressive decrease of incentives for PV electricity in grid-connected markets, new operation modes for PV systems should be explored beyond the traditional maximization of PV electri city feed-in. An example can be found in the domestic sector, where the use of modern PV hybrid systems combin ed with efficient electrical appliances and demand side management strategies can significantly enhance the PV value for the user. This paper presents an active demand side management system able to displace the consumer’s load curve in response to local (PV hybrid system, user) and external conditions (external grid). In this way, th e consumer becomes an “active consumer” that can also cooperate with others and the grid, increasing even more the PV value for the electrical system.

ABSTRACT Architects are increasingly demanded to incorporate extensive glazed areas in buildings in correspondence with a socio-cultural perception of glass linked with progress, contemporaneity and welfare, as well as for this material’s versatility to express identity features, establish communication with its environment, and perform as a showroom for emergent technologies. Despite this disposition to take cutting-edge technology in, the contemporary glass envelope very scarcely integrates advanced daylight control technology. From an architectural standpoint, the exploration of the manipulation of natural light through the glass surface has been very swallow, even though a wide range of technical solutions has being produced in the last three decades for this purpose. One of the core issues behind this inconsistency is the lack of established synergy between architectural design processes and sustainable technological developments. From one side, the specifications of daylighting technologies are primarily determined by a scientific perspective of efficiency and disregard fundamental architectural concerns and interests. From another, architectural practice does not conceive sustainable technologies as key active agents in the design process, despite the fact the concept of sustainability is constantly regarded as the driving force of the leading-edge architecture of the future, and in this sense, it becomes an absolute priority to minimize the ecological and economical consequences of glass decisive impact in buildings. Through the scrutiny of cultural, functional and ecological values, this thesis analyses the precarious transdisciplinary dialogue between the evolution of the glass envelope in contemporary architecture and the development of daylighting technological solutions, and identifies the core affairs necessary to a sustainable integration of glass facades into future architecture. From an energy point of view, this exercise is a critical step to raise awareness about the severity of the present situation, and to establish the underpinnings for new lines of intervention essential to make both worlds efficiently converge. Architecturally speaking, in addition to the opportunity to understand the design potentials of these technologies and reflect on the relationship glasslight, this study contributes with a scenario from which generate the reciprocal contextualization of energy building research to future architectural practices.

Abstract: In the current Bachelor Thesis, the structure of the Pavellón de Gravimetría del Centro Astronómico de Yebes is moulded in order to determine its influence on the observed values of gravity inside the Pavilion. The Pabellón de Gravimetría holds in its interior a room where gravity measures are made on seven concrete pillars located on the ground level. In order to be able to mould the room, a topographical survey measurement was made on a 1:100 scale. After concluding the topographical survey measurement the geographical coordinates of the centre of the measurement pillars were determined, due to the necessity to know this data when making relative gravity measures. To calculate the influence that the pavilion structure has on the observed gravity measures in its interior generates, a series of programs in Java language have been created using the formula of the gravitational attraction that generates a prism (Nagy, 1969). Once the observations and the necessary calculations have been carried out, it is concluded that the influences of the structure of the Pavilion on the observed gravity measures inside it are not of a considerable magnitude. Despite that, it is necessary to know this to be able to correct the observed values. Also, certain disorientations of the pillars of measurement with respect to the geographical north is determined. The current Bachelor Thesis will allow, among others, the Centre of Technological Developments of Yebes to get involved in projects of international nature.

ABSTRACT This Dissertation investigates the field of computer image recognition applied to medical imaging in mammography. There is an interest in developing learning systems to assist radiologists in recognition of microcalcifications to help them in screening programs for prevention of breast cancer. Analysis of microcalcifications has emerged as a key technique for early diagnosis of breast cancer, but the design of automatic systems to recognize them is complicated by the variability and conditions of mammographic images. In this Thesis the theoretical approaches to design image recognition systems are discussed, with emphasis on the specific problems of detection and classification of microcalcifications. Our study includes techniques ranging from morphological operators, neural networks and support vector machines, to the most recent deep convolutional neural networks. We deal with learning theory by analyzing the importance of the concepts of scale and hierarchy at the design stage and its implications in the search for the architecture of connections and network layers. With these theoretical facts and design elements coming from other works in this area done by the author, three mammogram recognition systems which reflect technological developments are implemented, culminating in a system based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), whose architecture is designed thanks to the previously mentioned theoretical study and practical results of analysis conducted on scales in our image database. All three systems are trained and validated against the DDSM mammographic database, with a total of 100 training samples and 100 test samples chosen to avoid bias and stand for a real screening program. The validity of the CNN approach to the problem is demonstrated and a research way to help in designing the architecture of these networks is proposed.

ABSTRACT Recent technological developments allow the transition of observational oceanography from a ship-based to a networking concept. The latter suggests that the most efficient and effective way to observe the Ocean is through a fleet of spatially distributed autonomous platforms complemented by remote sensing. Due to their maneuverability, autonomy and endurance at sea, underwater gliders are already playing a significant role in this networking observational approach. Underwater gliders were specifically designed to sample vast areas of the Ocean. These are robots with a torpedo shape that make use of their hydrodynamic shape, wings and buoyancy changes to induce horizontal and vertical motions through the water column. A sensor to measure the conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) is a standard payload of this platform. This is because certain ocean dynamic variables can be derived from temperature, depth and salinity. The latter can be inferred from measurements of temperature and conductivity. Integrating CTD sensors in glider platforms is not exempted of challenges. One of them, concerns to the accuracy of the salinity values derived from the sampled conductivity and temperature. Specifically, salinity estimates are significantly degraded by the thermal lag response existing between the measured temperature and the real temperature inside the conductivity cell of the sensor. This deficiency depends on the particularities of the inflow to the sensor, its geometry and, it has also been hypothesized, on the heat accumulated by the sensor coating layers. The effects of thermal lag are usually mitigated by controlling the inflow conditions through the sensor. Controlling inflow conditions is usually achieved by pumping the water through the sensor or by keeping constant and known its diving speed. Although pumping systems have been recently implemented in CTD sensors on board gliders, there are still platforms with unpumped CTDs. In the latter case, salinity estimates rely on assuming reasonable controlled and unperturbed flow conditions at the CTD sensor. This Thesis investigates the impact, if any, that glider hydrodynamics may have on the performance of onboard CTDs. Specifically, the location of the CTD sensor (external to the hull) relative to the boundary layer developed along the glider fuselage, is first investigated. This is done, initially, by applying a coupled inviscid-boundary layer model developed by the author, and later by using a commercial software for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Results indicate, in both cases, that the CTD sensor is out of the boundary layer, being its inflow conditions those of the free stream. Still, the inflow speed to the CTD sensor is the speed of the platform, which largely depends on its hydrodynamic setup. For this reason, the research has been further extended to investigate the effect of the platform speed on the performance of the CTD sensor. A finite element model of the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of the flow inside the CTD sensor, is developed for this purpose. Numerical results suggest that the thermal lag effect is mostly due to the interaction of the flow through the conductivity cell and its geometry. This interaction is different at different speeds of the glider. Specifically, at low glider speeds (0.2 m/s), the mixing of recent and old waters inside the conductivity cell is slowed down by the generation of coherent eddy structures. Significant departures between real and estimated values of the salinity are found. Instead, mixing is enhanced by turbulence and instabilities for high glider speeds (0.4 m/s). As a result, the thermal response of the CTD sensor is faster and the salinity estimates more accurate than for the low speed case. For completeness, numerical results have been validated against model tests. Specifically, a scaled model of the CTD sensor was built to obtain experimental confirmation of the numerical results. Making use of the similarity principle of the dynamics governing incompressible fluids, experiments are carried out with air flows. This significantly simplifies the experimental setup and facilitates its realization in a limited resource condition. Model tests qualitatively confirm the numerical findings. Moreover, it is suggested in this Thesis that the response of the CTD sensor would be significantly improved by adding small turbulators at adequate locations inside the conductivity cell.

The genetic history of a group of populations is usually analyzed by reconstructing a tree of their origins. Reliability of the reconstruction depends on the validity of the hypothesis that genetic differentiation of the populations is mostly due to population fissions followed by independent evolution. If necessary, adjustment for major population admixtures can be made. Dating the fissions requires comparisons with paleoanthropological and paleontological dates, which are few and uncertain. A method of absolute genetic dating recently introduced uses mutation rates as molecular clocks; it was applied to human evolution using microsatellites, which have a sufficiently high mutation rate. Results are comparable with those of other methods and agree with a recent expansion of modern humans from Africa. An alternative method of analysis, useful when there is adequate geographic coverage of regions, is the geographic study of frequencies of alleles or haplotypes. As in the case of trees, it is necessary to summarize data from many loci for conclusions to be acceptable. Results must be independent from the loci used. Multivariate analyses like principal components or multidimensional scaling reveal a number of hidden patterns and evaluate their relative importance. Most patterns found in the analysis of human living populations are likely to be consequences of demographic expansions, determined by technological developments affecting food availability, transportation, or military power. During such expansions, both genes and languages are spread to potentially vast areas. In principle, this tends to create a correlation between the respective evolutionary trees. The correlation is usually positive and often remarkably high. It can be decreased or hidden by phenomena of language replacement and also of gene replacement, usually partial, due to gene flow.

The determination of the three-dimensional layout of galaxies is critical to our understanding of the evolution of galaxies and the structures in which they lie, to our determination of the fundamental parameters of cosmology, and to our understanding of both the past and future histories of the universe at large. The mapping of the large scale structure in the universe via the determination of galaxy red shifts (Doppler shifts) is a rapidly growing industry thanks to technological developments in detectors and spectrometers at radio and optical wavelengths. First-order application of the red shift-distance relation (Hubble’s law) allows the analysis of the large-scale distribution of galaxies on scales of hundreds of megaparsecs. Locally, the large-scale structure is very complex but the overall topology is not yet clear. Comparison of the observed red shifts with ones expected on the basis of other distance estimates allows mapping of the gravitational field and the underlying total density distribution. The next decade holds great promise for our understanding of the character of large-scale structure and its origin.

Summary. It is clear that any action to combat climate change must involve extensive efforts in reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the energy sector. In the EU, nearly 80% of total GHG emissions come from the energy sector (European Commission, 2011, p. 21). Any credible action within the EU on combating climate change therefore requires deep shifts in the way we produce and use our energy. This paper highlights that renewable energy policies to 2020 are insufficient to meet the EU’s long-term climate policy objectives of reducing GHG emissions by between 80 and 95% by 2050, and thereby aiming to avoid an increase in global temperatures of more than 2°C. Such an ambition would likely require a very high share of renewable energy (in the range of 80 to 100%) in the overall energy mix of the EU, given current uncertainties about the feasibility of potential technological developments (e.g. carbon capture and storage technology).

This study provides an ex-post evaluation of the EU copyright framework as provided by EU Directive 29/2001 on Copyright in the Information Society (InfoSoc Directive) and related legislation, focusing on four key criteria: effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and relevance. The evaluation finds that the EU copyright framework scores poorly on all four accounts. Of the four main goals pursued by the InfoSoc, only the alignment with international legislation can be said to have been fully achieved. The wider framework on copyright still generates costs by inhibiting content production, distribution and creation and generating productive, allocative and dynamic inefficiencies. Several problems also remain in terms of both internal and external coherence. Finally, espite its overall importance and relevance as a domain of legislation in the fields of content and media, the EU copyright framework is outdated in light of technological developments. Policy options to reform the current framework are provided in the CEPS companion study on the functioning and efficiency of the Digital Single Market in the field of copyright (CEPS Special Report No. 121/November 2015).
