The use of laboratory animals in conjunction with research on the human organism provides a basis for on understanding of several important physiological and pathological processes. Besides, the results of experimental studies enable technical and safety improvements to be made in surgical techniques used in the medical clinic. As living biological material is involved, we should guarantee its physical well-being, taking into account microbiological contamination and the genetics, nutrition and correct manipulation of the animals, in order to avoid incorrect conclusions from the experiments or unnecessarily large numbers of animals being used. In parallel with the concerns and legislation on the use of laboratory animals, there is also a growing preoccupation with the welfare and safety of those who handle the laboratory animals, since they run the risk of acquiring occupational diseases through contact with zoonotic pathogens or developing allergies. Prevention requires the application of modern technological advances in the design of the animal house and in the work routines. Unfortunately, few establishments in Brazil possess staff with adequate training and a basic infrastructure of research that includes the laboratory animal breeding centers, equivalent to those existing ones in the United States and Europe.

The updating of the of the prolapse of the third eyelid gland treatment in the literature is pertinent, due to the different surgical techniques for his resolution, with advantages and disadvantages. The work aimed to report the Moore technique in surgical treatment of the bilateral prolapse of the third eyelid gland in a female dog with bilateral entropion, six months, Shar-Pei breed, attended in the Veterinary Hospital School, Mozambique. The Moore technique showed good results and if the bilateral entropion was not a spastic type, was able to do the both surgeries in same day. The surgery using the Moore technique continues easy to learn, more simple to do and does not affect the third eyelid mobility.

The alar base widening is directly related to the Le Fort I osteotomy which could lead to an undesirable facial change if not adequately controlled transoperatively. Several surgical techniques to control the lateralization and widening of the nasal base have been described in the literature. The extraoral technique, first described by Shams and Motamedi in 2002 seems to make this procedure more predictable and reliable. The authors preset a modification for that technique. © 2013 Asian AOMS, ASOMP, JSOP, JSOMS, JSOM, and JAMI.

The elective ovariohysterectomy (OH) is the most frequent procedures performed in dogs. In this study was used three groups of seven animals each (GI, GII, and GIII) that was undergone to three elective OH techniques: (i) mini-celiotomy (Snook-hook technique), (ii) hybrid Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), and (iii) celiotomy (conventional surgery). The surgical techniques were compared considering the surgery time, trans and postoperative complications, technical difficulties, postoperative pain, surgical bleedind and some vital parameters as: heart rate (FC), respiratory rate (), rectal temperature, invasive blood pressure (PVI) and central venous pressure (PVC). The OH by hybrid vaginal NOTES was the technique with the lowest post-surgical discomfort score and the lowest surgical bleeding, although its surgical time was higher compared to the conventional and the hook (mini-celiotomy) modalities.
