An alternative pulse scheme which simplifies and improves the recently proposed P.E.COSY experiment is suggested for the retention of connected or unconnected transitions in a coupled spin system. An important feature of the proposed pulse scheme is the improved phase characteristics of the diagonal peaks. A comparison of various experiments designed for this purpose, namely COSY-45, E.COSY, P.E.COSY and the present scheme (A.E.COSY), is also presented. The suppression of unconnected transitions and the measurement of scalar coupling constants and their relative signs are illustrated from A.E.COSY spectra of 2,3-dibromopropionic acid and 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine.

We have developed the technique of thermal fluctuation spectroscopy to measure the thermal fluctuations in a system. This technique is particularly useful to study the denaturation dynamics of biomolecules like DNA. Here we present a study of the thermal fluctuations during the thermal denaturation (or melting) of double-stranded DNA. We find that the thermal denaturation of heteropolymeric DNA is accompanied by large, non-Gaussian thermal fluctuations. The thermal fluctuations show a two-peak structure as a function of temperature. Calculations of enthalpy exchanged show that the first peak comes from the denaturation of AT rich regions and the second peak from denaturation of GC rich regions. The large fluctuations are almost absent in homopolymeric DNA. We suggest that bubble formation and cooperative opening and closing dynamics of basepairs causes the additional fluctuation at the first peak and a large cooperative transition from a partially molten DNA to a completely denatured state causes the additional fluctuation at the second peak.

The conformation and stability of pearl millet prolamin (pennisetin) were examined by using circular dichroism and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The far UV spectrum of pennisetin in 70% (v/v) aqueous ethanol showed the presence of predominant alpha-helical structure and its occurrence in the alpha + beta class of protein. The far and near UV spectra of pennisetin in ethanol: trifluoroethanol also supported this observation. However pennisetin showed the presence of some helical structure in 8 M urea which is known to be a highly unordered structure forming solvent. A decrease in alpha helical content of native pennisetin was observed with rise in temperature from 5-75-degrees-C and this effect of temperature was found to be reversible. A C-13 NMR spectrum of pennisetin in 70% ethanol suggested a high degree of molecular mobility in ethanol. Comparison of the cross polarization spectrum with the single pulse excitation spectrum suggested pennisetin to be a heterogeneous protein.

Using intensity autocorrelation of multiply scattered light, we show that the increase in interparticle interaction in dense, binary colloidal fluid mixtures of particle diameters 0.115µm and 0.089µm results in freezing into a crystalline phase at volume fraction? of 0.1 and into a glassy state at?=0.2. The functional form of the field autocorrelation functiong (1)(t) for the binary fluid phase is fitted to exp[??(6k 0 2 D eff t)1/2] wherek 0 is the magnitude of the incident light wavevector and? is a parameter inversely proportional to the photon transport mean free pathl*. TheD eff is thel* weighted average of the individual diffusion coefficients of the pure species. Thel* used in calculatingD eff was computed using the Mie theory. In the solid (crystal or glass) phase, theg (1)(t) is fitted (only with a moderate success) to exp[??(6k 0 2 W(t))1/2] where the mean-squared displacementW(t) is evaluated for a harmonically bound overdamped Brownian oscillator. It is found that the fitted parameter? for both the binary and monodisperse suspensions decreases significantly with the increase of interparticle interactions. This has been justified by showing that the calculated values ofl* in a monodisperse suspension using Mie theory increase very significantly with the interactions incorporated inl* via the static structure factor.

We report Raman studies on powder samples of the charge transfer complex (TTF)(x)C60Br8 at room temperature. The phonons show considerable softening with respect to the frequencies observed in the Raman spectrum of solid C60Br8. The strongest mode at 1464 cm(-1) in C60Br8 is red shifted to a doublet with peaks at 1414 and 1421 cm(-1), implying an average phonon softening Delta omega of -47 cm(-1). A comparison with the phonon softening of the corresponding A(g)(2) mode in alkali-doped C-60 (Delta omega similar to -36 cm(-1) for A(6)C(60), A = K, Rb or Cs) suggests that 8 electrons are transferred per C60Br8 molecule in the charge transfer complex. The mode at 503 cm(-1) in C60Br8 is shifted upwards, similar to that in A(6)C(60) compounds.

The HeI photoelectron spectrum of the hydrogen bonded hetero-dimer H2Scdots, three dots, centeredHCl shows two vertical ionization energies at 10.91 and 12.16 eV. Ab initio MO calculations reveal that these features are due to the sulphur and chlorine lone pair ionizations respectively. Results show that while the ground ionic state is repulsive the first excited ionic state is strongly bound. The photoelectron spectrum of the diethyl sulphidecdots, three dots, centeredHCl complex is similar to that of H2Scdots, three dots, centeredHCl.

Weak molecular interactions such as those in pyridine-iodine, benzene-iodine and benzene-chloroform systems oriented in thermotropic liquid crystals have been studied from the changes of the order parameters as a result of complex formation. The results indicate the formation of at least two types of charge transfer complexes in pyridine-iodine solutions. The pi-complexes in benzene-chloroform and benzene-iodine mixtures have also been detected. No detectable changes in the inter-proton distances in these systems were observed.

Single phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1(PbTiO3) ceramics were prepared using the columbite precursor method after optimizing the synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the microstructure of the sintered ceramics. Impedance and modulus spectroscopic data were used to gain an insight into the electrical properties of the samples and with a view to observing the relaxations in them. The direct infrared (IR) absorption spectrum of benzene dimer formed in a free-jet expansion was recorded in the 3.3 mu m region for the first time. This has led to the observation of the C H stretching fundamental mode nu(13) (B(1u)), which is both IR and Raman forbidden in the monomer. Moreover, the IR forbidden and Raman allowed nu(7) (E(2g)) mode has been observed as well. These two modes were found to be red-shifted along with the IR allowed nu(20) (E(1u)) mode, as previously reported by Erlekam et al. [Erlekam; Frankowski; Meijer; Gert von Helden J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 124, 171101], using ion-dip spectroscopy, contrary to the blue-shift predicted earlier by theoretical studies. The observation of the nu(13) band indicates that the symmetry is reduced in the dimer, confirming the T-shaped structure observed by Erlekam et al. Our experimental results have not provided any direct evidence for the presence of the parallel displaced geometry, the main objective of the present work, as predicted by theoretical calculations.

Nanocomposites of few-layer graphene with nanoparticles of CdSe and CdS have been synthesized by two different methods, one involving ultrasonication of a mixture of graphene and the chalcogenide nanoparticles, and another involving assembly at the organic-aqueous interface. The nanocomposites have been examined by electron microscopy, electronic absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies as well as Raman spectroscopy. Electron microscopy reveals that the nanoparticles are dispersed on the graphene surface. Raman spectra show the presence of definitive electronic interaction between the nanoparticles and graphene depending on the capping agent. Photoluminescence spectra are markedly influenced by the interaction of the nanoparticles with the graphene surface, depending on the capping agent.

We present a timing and broad-band pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis of the transient Be X-ray binary pulsar 1A 1118-61 observed during its outburst in 2009 January using Suzaku observations. The Suzaku observations were made twice, once at the peak of the outburst, and the other 13 d later at its declining phase. Pulse profiles from both observations exhibit strong energy dependence with several peaks at low energies and a single peak above similar to 10 keV. A weak, narrow peak is detected at the main dip of the pulse profiles from both observations in the energy bands below 3 keV, indicating the presence of a phase-dependent soft excess in the source continuum. The broad-band energy spectrum of the pulsar could be fitted well with a partial covering cut-off power-law model and a narrow iron fluorescence line. We also detect a broad cyclotron feature at similar to 50 keV from both observations which is a feature common for accretion-powered pulsars with high magnetic field strength. The pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis shows an increase in the absorption column density of the partial covering component, as well as variation in the covering fraction at the dips of the pulse profiles, which naturally explains energy dependence of the same. The cyclotron line parameters also show significant variation with pulse phase with an similar to 10 keV variation in the cyclotron line energy and a variation in depth by a factor of 3. This can be explained either as the effect of different viewing angles of the dipole field at different pulse phases, or due to a more complex underlying magnetic field geometry.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.
