OBJETIVO: Analisar os efeitos de diferentes níveis de triglicerídeos fornecidos pela dieta sobre os parâmetros séricos triglicerídeos e lipoproteínas de alta densidade e o peso corporal de ratos sedentários e exercitados. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados ratos Wistar, alimentados com dietas controle (7%peso/peso) e hiperlipídica (14% peso/peso) e subdivididos em sedentários e exercitados, por um período de 8 semanas. RESULTADOS: Verificou-se que o peso não diferiu entre os grupos, embora o consumo tenha sido reduzido nos grupos com dieta hiperlipídica. Os níveis de triglicerídeos não foram aumentados com a dieta rica em gordura e o HDL-colesterol se elevou apenas entre os animais exercitados que tiveram dieta normolipídica. CONCLUSÃO: A intensidade e o tempo de exercício físico influenciam de maneira mais aguda os níveis de HDL-colesterol em comparação aos níveis de triglicérides. Sugere-se que a dieta hiperlipídica deveria sobrepor (14%peso/peso) de gordura para que houvesse alterações relevantes nos parâmetros lipídicos e supostamente um aumento da performance física.

This present study aimed at evaluating the effect of the addition of an emulsifier to diets containing soybean oil, poultry fat or their blend, on the performance, carcass traits, serum lipid levels, pancreatic lipase concentration and nutrient digestibility of broilers. A randomized block design was applied using a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, with three fat sources (soybean oil, poultry fat, and a blend of 50% soybean oil and 50% poultry fat) and the addition or not of an emulsifier. In experiment I, broiler performance, carcass traits, serum cholesterol, HDL, and triglyceride levels, and pancreatic lipase activity in 42-day-old broilers were evaluated. In experiment II, dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF) coefficients of digestibility were analyzed. Broilers fed the diet containing soybean oil and emulsifier presented higher body weight, weight gain and better feed conversion ratio. When birds were fed poultry fat and the fat blend (soybean oil and poultry fat) and the emulsifier was added to the diets, pancreatic lipase concentration increased. It was concluded that the use of soybean oil, poultry fat and their blend does no in the diet does not influence the performance, carcass traits, or serum cholesterol, HDL and triglyceride levels of 42-day-old broilers. The addition of emulsifiers to diets containing poultry fat improves ether extract digestibility and increases the production and secretion of pancreatic lipase.

The objective of this study was to determine the energy values of soybean oil (SBO) and tallow (T) combined in different ratios, and to evaluate their effects on the performance, body composition, and serum lipid levels of starter broilers. In experiment I, a digestibility trial was performed to determine the energy value of the SOB and T mixtures using 100 12 - to 21 -day-old broilers. In experiment II, 930 one-day-old broilers were used. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of 4% SBO and T inclusions at the following ratios: 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0. Each treatment included six replicates. In experiment I, AME and AMEn linearly increased (P<0.01), as SBO participation in the mixture increased. In experiment II, the different lipid ratios quadratically influenced (P<0.01) body weight and weight gain at 21 days of age, increasing up to the ratio of 65.87:34.13. Serum lipids linearly decreased (P<0.05) as SOB inclusion in the diet increased. It was concluded that AME and AMEn of SBO and T at ratios of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 were 7.882 and 7.542, 8.384 and 8.076, 8.701 and 8.385, 8.801 and 8.727, and 9.478 and 9.271 kcal/kg, respectively. The best performance with no detrimental effect on carcass yield was obtained with the mixture of 75% SBO with 25% T. The highest dietary soybean oil level reduced serum lipid levels of 21-day-old broilers.

Objective: To assess the effect of soy protein and progressive resistance training on body composition and lipids in postmenopausal women.Design: In a controlled trial, 46 postmenopausal women were randomized to one of four groups: 25 g of soy protein (SP, n = 10), 25 g of soy protein plus resistance exercise (SPE, n = 14), 25 g of maltodextrine (placebo) (PL, n = 11), or placebo plus resistance exercise (PLE, n = 11). Progressive resistance training was held three times a week for 16 weeks and included 8 exercises (3 series of 8-12 repetitions). At baseline and after 16 weeks, body mass index, waist circumference (WC), body fat, muscle mass and serum lipid levels were measured. To confirm isoflavone absorption, urinary concentrations were determined. The t-test of Student and ANOVA were used in the statistical analysis.Results: Subjects were classified as overweight and showed android fat distribution: Urinary isoflavone excretion indicated compliance to soy protein treatment. After 16 weeks of intervention, both SPE and PLE groups showed a significant increase of 1.3 kg in muscle mass and reduction in WC of -1.4 and -2.1 cm, respectively (p < 0.05). Significant decreases in the mean values of total cholesterol and LDL (-29.0 and -24.0 mg/dL, p < 0.001 and p < 0.006, respectively) were observed in the users of soy protein alone (SP).Conclusions: Soy protein supplementation did not influence the indicators of body composition. However, it exerted possible favorable effects on lipid profile in postmenopausal women. The increase in muscle mass and reduction in abdominal fat were correlated with resistance training. This study was undertaken to verify the effect of a daily intake of a new fermented soy milk produced with Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus jugurti on the serum lipid levels in normocholesterolemic middle-aged men. The study was randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled and was performed for a period of 6 weeks. Forty-four normocholesterolemic healthy, male volunteers, aged 40-55 years old were randomly separated in two groups: The F-group received 200 ml of the fermented product daily and the P-group received 200 ml of placebo (chemically fermented). The blood samples were drawn initially and after 3 and 6 weeks and serum values for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were determined. The LDL-cholesterol value was estimated. No significant changes in the fermented group (F) were observed for total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol or triglyceride levels, while the HDL-cholesterol level was significantly higher (p≤ 0,05) after 6 weeks. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higer (p≤ 0,05) in the placebo group (P), but no changes were found for the HDL-cholestrol and triglyceride levels during the experimental period. In conclusion, the intake of 200 ml/day of the fermented soy milk, produced with E.faecium and L. jugurti, for 6 weeks, did not affect the serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and led an increase of 10% in the HDL-cholesterol level.

Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial, progressive and slow disease, and hyperlipidaemia is one of the potential factors in the development of atherosclerotic cardiac diseases. The experimental dyslipidaemia carrying out advantages are the production of atheromatous lesions in a short period of time, an adequate dietetic control and environmental factors, the possibility of studies concerning reversibility of atherosclerotic lesions, and pre-clinic experiments with hypolipidaemic substances. This study aims at evaluating tyloxapol analyzing serum lipid levels. Twenty-eight healthy Wistar adults' albino male rats, weighing an average of 200 g were utilized. They were distributed into four experimental groups with seven animals each, as follows: Group I - (control); Group II - treated with tyloxapol at a dose of 500mg/kg of body weight, through intraperitoneal via each 48 hours, for two weeks; Group III - treated with tyloxapol at a dose of 500mg/ kg of body weight, through intraperitoneal via each 48 hours, for three weeks; Group IV - treated with tyloxapol at a dose of 500mg/kg of body weight, through intraperitoneal via each 48 hours, for four weeks. As lipid profile evaluation is concerned, the values of triacylglycerols and HDL have indicated that group III has significantly differed from group I and the values of total cholesterol and LDL have indicated that group I has significantly differed from group II, III and IV. It was concluded that for the studied period the surfactant tyloxapol was effective to inducing hyperlipidaemia.

Study Model: Retrospective study. Study Objective: To characterize statin treatment management due to lipid alterations and side effects throughout statin treatment in basic healthcare unit. Methods: Medical reports of women from a basic healthcare unit were analyzed, obtaining: disease presence, regular medication prescription, statin type and dosage, biochemical exams results, musculoskeletal complaints, and statin use cessation, going back the information until the medical consultation of first prescription. Results: Prescribed statins were Simvastatin and Atorvastatin at low doses (10-20 mg). Dose (48,4%) and/or type (25,4%) alterations occurred for lipid profile adequacy. Lipid levels were reduced without creatine kinase elevation. Treatment withdrawn (30,6%) was mainly due to their own decision (74%), which was strongly associated with records of musculoskeletal complaints (Odds Ratio: 6,40[1,53-26,78]). Conclusion: Statin treatment was effective in reducing serum lipid levels and self-reported pain was underestimated, characterizing the major limiting factor for treatment adherence.

Abstract. Background: This study investigated the hypothesis that long-term orange juice consumption (≥ 12 months) was associated with low risk factors for cardiovascular disease in adult men and women with normal and moderately high cholesterol blood levels. Methods. The sample consisted of 103 men (18-66 y) and 26 women (18-65 y); all were employees of an orange juice factory with daily access to free orange juice. The results showed that 41% of the individuals consumed 2 cups (480 mL) of orange juice per day for at least twelve months, while 59% of the volunteers are non-consumers of orange juice. Results: Orange juice consumers with normal serum lipid levels had significantly lower total cholesterol (-11%, p <0.001), LDL-cholesterol (-18%, p < 0.001), apolipoprotein B (apo B) (-12%, p < 0.01) and LDL/HDL ratio (-12%, p < 0.04) in comparison to non-consumers, as did the consumers with moderate hypercholesterolemia: lower total cholesterol (-5%, p <0.02), LDL-cholesterol (-12%, p <0.03), apolipoprotein B (-12%, p <0.01) and LDL/HDL ratio (-16%, p <0.05) in comparison the non-consumers counterparts. Serum levels of homocysteine, HDL- cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-1, body composition and the dietary intake of food energy and macronutrients did not differ among orange juice consumers and non-consumers, but vitamin C and folate intake was higher in orange juice consumers. Conclusion: Long-term orange juice consumers had lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo B and LDL/HDL ratio and an improvement of folate and vitamin C in their diet. © 2013 Aptekmann and Cesar; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Aim: Chronic exposure to intermittent hypoxia commonly induces the activation of sympathetic tonus and the disruption of glucose homoeostasis. However, the effects of exposure to acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) on glucose homoeostasis are not yet fully elucidated. Herein, we evaluated parameters related to glucose metabolism in rats exposed to AIH. Methods: Male adult rats were submitted to 10 episodes of hypoxia (6% O2, for 45 s) interspersed with 5-min intervals of normoxia (21%), while the control (CTL) group was kept in normoxia. Results: Acute intermittent hypoxia rats presented higher fasting glycaemia, normal insulinaemia, increased lactataemia and similar serum lipid levels, compared to controls (n = 10, P < 0.05). Additionally, AIH rats exhibited increased glucose tolerance (GT) (n = 10, P < 0.05) and augmented insulin sensitivity (IS) (n = 10, P < 0.05). The p-Akt/Akt protein ratio was increased in the muscle, but not in the liver and adipose tissue of AIH rats (n = 6, P < 0.05). The elevated glycaemia in AIH rats was associated with a reduction in the hepatic glycogen content (n = 10, P < 0.05). Moreover, the AIH-induced increase in blood glucose concentration, as well as reduced hepatic glycogen content, was prevented by prior systemic administration of the β-adrenergic antagonist (P < 0.05). The effects of AIH on glycaemia and Akt phosphorylation were transient and not observed after 60 min. Conclusions: We suggest that AIH induces an increase in blood glucose concentration as a result of hepatic glycogenolysis recruitment through sympathetic activation. The augmentation of GT and IS might be attributed, at least in part, to increased β-adrenergic sympathetic stimulation and Akt protein activation in skeletal muscles, leading to a higher glucose availability and utilization. © 2013 Scandinavian Physiological Society.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da incorporação de óleo de palma sobre os níveis lipídicos séricos e a qualidade espermática de touros bubalinos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, com 12 touros bubalinos previamente selecionados, com idade média de 3,47 ± 0,92 anos e peso inicial de 456,8 ± 50,4 kg. Os touros foram confinados e divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com a raça, idade e a alimentação recebida. A alimentação (milho triturado, farelo de trigo e silagem de milho; proporção volumoso/concentrado de 50%) em cocho coletivo. O Grupo CONT recebeu dieta sem adição de óleo de palma e o Grupo ÓLEO recebeu dieta com adição de 2% de óleo de palma sobre a MS. Foram realizadas as análises bromatológica e de perfil de ácidos graxos dos alimentos. Foram investigados o perfil lipídico sérico, os aspectos físicos e morfológicos do sêmen in natura e as relações entre eles. A análise estatística contemplou a análise de variância (Anova), a comparação de médias pelo teste de Tukey, além das correlações de Pearson (P<0,05). O Grupo ÓLEO teve consumo 71,23% superior de ácidos graxos saturados e 55,40% superior de ácidos graxos insaturados em relação ao Grupo CONT. Efeitos significativos em relação aos grupos, para os parâmetros séricos, foram observados para triglicerídeos, colesterol, HDL e lipídeos totais, com valores maiores para o Grupo ÓLEO e, efeitos significativos em relação a período para colesterol, LDL, VLDL e lipídeos totais (P<0,05). Com relação aos parâmetros seminais, houve significativa redução em turbilhonamento e integridade de membrana plasmática, e redução da concentração seminal em função do período para o Grupo ÓLEO. Houve correlação significativa entre as variáveis: triglicerídeos e defeitos menores (r=-0.412; P=0,006), LDL e defeitos totais (r=-0,333; P=0,030), VLDL e viabilidade espermática (r=0,381; P=0,012), lipídeos totais e defeitos menores (r=-0.366; P= 0,017), e lipídeos totais e defeitos totais (r=-0,309; P= 0,046). Apesar de haver relação entre maiores níveis de lipídeos séricos e melhor morfologia espermática e do uso do óleo de palma não reduzir a qualidade do sêmen in natura a níveis abaixo dos fisiológicos, seu uso a 2% na dieta não favoreceu efetivamente os parâmetros relacionados com elevação da qualidade seminal e potencial fertilidade dos touros.

Studies have shown that there are inverse relationships between nut consumption and the reduction of cardiovascular risk. This study tested the hypothesis that daily consumption of Brazilian nuts would have a positive effect upon selenium (Se) status, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity, lipid profile, and atherogenic risk in severely obese women. Thirty-seven severely obese women each consumed 1 Brazilian nut a day (290 mu g of Se a day) for 8 weeks. Blood Se concentrations, total erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity, lipid profile, and Castelli I and H indexes were evaluated before and after the nuts consumption. All the patients were Se deficient at baseline; this deficiency was remedied by the consumption of the Brazilian nut (P < .0001). The intake of Brazilian nuts promoted a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations (P < .00001), which then resulted in a significant improvement of the Castelli I (P < .0002) and II (P < .0004) indexes. This study shows that obese people who implement daily consumption of Brazilian nuts can improve both Se status and lipid profile, especially high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, thereby reducing cardiovascular risks. Objective: To assess the impact of structured diabetes care in a rural general practice. Design and setting: A cohort study of structured diabetes care (care plans, multidisciplinary involvement and regular patient recall) in a large general practice in a medium-sized Australian rural town. Medical care followed each doctor's usual practice. Participants: The first 404 consecutive patients with type 2 diabetes who consented to take part in the program were evaluated 24 months after enrolment in July 2002 to December 2003. Main outcome measures: Change in cardiovascular disease risk factors (waist circumference, body mass index, serum lipid levels, blood pressure); change in indicators of risks associated with poorly controlled diabetes (glycated haemoglobin [HbA1(c]) concentration, foot lesions, clinically significant hypoglycaemia); change in 5-year cardiovascular disease risk. Results: Women had a lower 5-year risk of a cardiovascular event at enrolment than men. Structured care was associated with statistically significant reductions in mean cardiovascular disease risk factors (waist circumference, -2.6 cm; blood pressure [systolic, -3 mmHg; diastolic -7 mmHg]; and serum lipid levels [total cholesterol, -0.5 mmol/L; HDL cholesterol, 0.02 mmol/L; LDL cholesterol, -0.4 mmol/L; triglycerides, -0.3 mmol/L]); and improvements in indicators of diabetic control (proportion with severe hypoglycaemic events, -2.2%; proportion with foot lesions, -14%). The greatest improvements in risk factors occurred in patients with the highest calculated cardiovascular risk. Aluminum (Al3+) overload is frequently associated with lipid peroxidation and neurological disorders. Aluminum accumulation is also reported to be related to renal impairment, anemia and other clinical complications in hemodialysis patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the degree of lipid peroxidation, platelet aggregation and serum aluminum in patients receiving regular hemodialytic treatment. The level of plasma lipid peroxidation was evaluated on the basis of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Mean platelet peroxidation in patients undergoing hemodialysis was significantly higher than in normal controls (2.7 ± 0.03 vs 1.8 ± 0.06 nmol/l, P<0.05). Platelet aggregation and serum aluminum levels were determined by a turbidimetric method and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. Serum aluminum was significantly higher in patients than in normal controls (44.5 ± 29 vs 10.8 ± 2.5 µg/l, P<0.05). Human blood platelets were stimulated with collagen (2.2 µg/ml), adenosine diphosphate (6 µM) and epinephrine (6 µM) and showed reduced function with the three agonists utilized. No correlation between aluminum levels and platelet aggregation or between aluminum and peroxidation was observed in hemodialyzed patients.
