The shear-deformation-potential constant XI-u of the conduction-band minima of Si has been measured by a method which we called deep-level capacitance transient under uniaxial stress. The uniaxial-stress (F) dependence of the electron emission rate e(n) from deep levels to the split conduction-band minima of Si has been analyzed. Theoretical curves are in good agreement with experimental data for the S0 and S+ deep levels in Si. The values of XI-u obtained by the method are 11.1 +/- 0.3 eV at 148.9 K and 11.3 +/- 0.3 eV at 223.6 K. The analysis and the XI-u values obtained are also valuable for symmetry determination of deep electron traps in Si.

Laser-induced fragmentation of C-60 has been studied using a time-of-flight mass spectrometric technique. The average kinetic energies of fragment ions C-n(+) (n <= 58) have been extracted from the measured full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ion beam profiles. The primary formation mechanism of small fragment ion C-n(+) (n < 30) is assumed to be a two-step fragmentation process: C60 sequential decay to unstable C-30(+) ion and the binary fission of C-30(+). Considering a second photo absorption process in the later part of laser pulse duration, good agreement is achieved between experiment and theoretical description of photoion formation. The time of flight mass spectrometric technique was used to determine the initial mean kinetic energy of small fragment ions C-n(+) (n <= 11) produced from C-60 excited by 532 nm nanosecond laser pulses. The measured kinetic energy shows little variation with the fragment mass and the laser fluence in a broad range. Based on the assumption that C-30(+) is produced predominantly by a single electron emission followed by successive C-2 evaporation from hot C-60 in the nanosecond laser field, the formation of small fragments is interpreted as the complete breakup of the unstable C-30(+) cage structure. The interpretation is consistent with the previously observed results.

Oxygen adsorption and desorption on a Pd(100) surface with a mesoscopic defect were studied by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). The defect surface, with an area of approximately 200 x 60 mu m(2), behaved differently from the perfect Pd(100) surface towards the adsorption of oxygen. When saturated, both surface oxygen and subsurface oxygen coexisted on the defect surface, whereas only surface oxygen was present on the Pd(100) surface. Upon heating, subsurface oxygen diffused back to the surface and desorbed with surface oxygen at the same time. The difference in oxygen adsorption ability between the defect surface and the perfect Pd(100) surface can be attributed to different structures of these two surfaces. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The transfer ionization process offers a unique opportunity to study radial and angular electron correlations in the helium atom. We report calculations for the multiple differential cross sections of the transfer ionization process p + He --> H + He++ + e(-). The results of these calculations demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the fully differential cross sections to fine details of electron correlation in the target atom. Specifically, angular electron correlation in the ground state of helium results in a broad peak in the electron emission spectra in the backward direction, relative to the incoming beam. Our model explains some of the key effects observed in measurements of multiple differential cross sections using the COLTRIMS technique.

It is now well established that energetic electron emission, nonsequential ionization, and high harmonic generation, produced during the interaction of intense, femtosecond laser pulses with atoms (and atomic positive ions), can be explained by invoking rescattering of the active electron in the laser field, the so-called rescattering mechanism. In contrast for negative ions, the role of rescattering has not been established experimentally. By irradiating F- ions with ultrashort laser pulses, F+ ion yields as a function of intensity for both linearly and circularly polarized light have been measured. We find that, at intensities well below saturation for F+ production by sequential ionization, there is a small but significant enhancement in the yield for the case of linearly polarized light, providing the first clear experimental evidence for the existence of the rescattering mechanism in negative ions.

A hyperthermal hydrogen/deuterium atom beam source with a defined energy distribution has been employed to investigate the kinetically induced electron emission from noble metal surfaces. A monotonous increase in the emission yield was found for energies between 15 and 200 eV. This, along with an observed isotope effect, is described in terms of a model based on Boltzmann type electron energy distributions.

Composites of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) and molybdenum sulfur iodine (MoSI) nanowires were prepared using twin-screw extrusion. Extensive microscopic examination of the composites revealed the nanowires were well dispersed in the PCL matrix, although bundles of Mo6S3I6 ropes were evident at higher loadings. Secondary electron imaging (SEI) showed the nanowires had formed an extensive network throughout the PCL matrix, resulting in increased electrical conductivity of PCL, by eight orders of magnitude, and an electrical percolation threshold of 6.5T10S3vol%. Thermal analysis (DSC), WAXD, and hot stage polarized optical microscopy (HSPOM) experiments revealed Mo6S3I6 addition altered PCL crystallization kinetics, nucleation density, and crystalline content. A greater number of smaller spherulites were formed via heterogeneous nucleation. The onset of thermal decomposition (TGA) of PCL decreased by 70-C, a consequence of the thermal degradation of Mo6S3I6 to MoO3, which in turn accelerates the formation of volatile gases during the first stage of PCL decomposition.

A reflex discharge plasma, obtained as a hybrid between a Penning discharge plasma (PDP) and a hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) plasma, is analysed as a possible direction-current, high-density plasma source. The experiment is run in oxygen at pressures of 10 mTorr and 1 mTorr, and for discharge currents of 100 to 200 mA. Although the gas pressure is considerably lower than those used in HCDs, the hollow-cathode effect (HCE) occurs for current levels higher than 100 mA and leads to plasma densities comparable with those obtained using inductive plasma sources. The presence of a constant magnetic field leads to the enhancement of electron emission from cathodes under ion bombardment, and to the decreasing of the ion loss by diffusion to the wall.

An ab initio approach has been applied to study multiphoton detachment rates for the negative hydrogen ion in the lowest nonvanishing order of perturbation theory. The approach is based on the use of B splines allowing an accurate treatment of the electronic repulsion. Total detachment rates have been determined for two- to six-photon processes as well as partial rates for detachment into the different final symmetries. It is shown that B-spline expansions can yield accurate continuum and bound-state wave functions in a very simple manner. The calculated total rates for two- and three-photon detachment are in good agreement with other perturbative calculations. For more than three-photon detachment little information has been available before now. While the total cross sections show little structure, a fair amount of structure is predicted in the partial cross sections. In the two-photon process, it is shown that the detached electrons mainly have s character. For four- and six-photon processes, the contribution from the d channel is the most important. For three- and five-photon processes p electrons dominate the electron emission spectrum. Detachment rates for s and p electrons show minima as a function of photon energy. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

This thesis Entitled phenylethynylarene based Donor-Acceptor systems:Desigh,Synthesis and Photophysical studies. A strategy for the design of donor-acceptor dyads, wherein decay of the charge separated (CS) state to low lying local triplet levels could possibly be prevented, is proposed. In order to examine this strategy, a linked donor-acceptor dyad BPEPPT with bis(phenylethYlly/)pyrene (BPEP) as the light absorber and acceptor and phenothiazine (PT) as donor was designed and photoinduced electron transfer in the dyad investigated. Absorption spectra of the dyad can be obtained by adding contributions due 10 the BPEP and PT moieties indicating that the constituents do not interact in the ground stale. Fluorescence of the BPEP moiety was efficiently quenched by the PT donor and this was attributed to electron lransfer from PT to BPEP. Picosecond transient absorption studies suggested formation of a charge separated state directly from the singlet excited state of BPEP. Nanosecond flash photolysis experiments gave long-ived transient absorptions assignable to PT radical cation and BPEP radical anion. These assignments were confirmed by oxygen quenching studies and secondary electron transfer experiments. Based on the available data, energy level diagram for BPEP-PT was constructed. The long lifetime of the charge separated state was attributed to the inverted region effects. The CS state did not undergo decay to low lying BPEP triplet indicating the success of our strategy

We have analyzed the shot noise of electron emission under strong applied electric fields within the Landauer-Bttiker scheme. In contrast to the previous studies of vacuum-tube emitters, we show that in new generation electron emitters, scaled down to the nanometer dimensions, shot noise much smaller than the Schottky noise is observable. Carbon nanotube field emitters are among possible candidates to observe the effect of shot-noise suppression caused by quantum partitioning.

Using a crossed-beam apparatus with a double hemispherical electron spectrometer, we have studied the spectrum of electrons released in thermal energy ionizing collisions of metastable He^*(2^3S) atoms with ground state Yb(4f^14 6s^2 ^1S_0) atoms, thereby providing the first Penning electron spectrum of an atomic target with-4f-electrons. In contrast to the HeI (58.4nm) and NeI (73.6/74.4nm) photoelectron spectra of Yb, which show mainly 4f- and 6s-electron emission in about a 5:1 ratio, the He^*(2^3S) Penning electron spectrum is dominated by 6s-ionization, acoompnnied by some correlation- induced 6p-emission (8% Yb+( 4f^14 6p^2P) formation) and very little 4f-ionization (<_~ 2.5%). This astounding result is attributed to the electron exchange mechanism for He^*(2^3S) ionization and reflects the poor overlap of the target 4f-electron wavefunction with the 1s-hole of He^*(2^3S), as discussed on thc basis of Dirac-Fock wave functions for the Yb orbitals and through calculations of the partial ionization cross sections involving semiempirical complex potentiale. The presented case may be regarded as the elearest atomic example for the surface sensitivity of He^*(2^3S) Penning ionization observed so far.

Calculations of the level width \gamma( L_1) and the f_12 and f_13 Coster-Kronig yields for atomic zinc have been performed with Dirac-Fock wave functions. For \gamma(L_1), a large deviation between theory and evaluated data exists. We include the incomplete orthogonality of the electron orbitals as well as the interchannel interaction of the decaying states. Orbital relaxation reduces the total rates in all groups of the electron-emission spectrum by about 10-20 %. Different, however, is the effect of the continuum interaction. The L_1-L_23X Coster-Kronig part of the spectrum is definitely reduced in its intensity, whereas the MM and MN spectra are slightly enhanced. This results in a reduction of Coster-Kronig yields, where for medium and heavy elements considerable discrepancies have been found in comparison to relativistic theory. Briefly, we discuss the consequences of our calculations for heavier elements.
