Contains also correspondence relating to the activities of the Alliance Israelite Universelle on behalf of Palestine and the Jews in the Balkan States and Morocco and to the establishment of United States committees for the Alliance and the raising of funds, including correspondence with H. Pereira Mendes, Henry S. Jacobs, John Hay, and Adolphe Cremieux as well as letters from Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Galveston, Minneapolis, Mobile, Rochester, St. Louis, and San Francisco. Contemplating Knudsen's Baseline: Where small is not so beautiful

Does the Internet's World Wide Web (the web) represent an opportunity or threat to the small firms of the world? In line with recent calls for entrepreneurship research to adopt a more evolutionary approach, this article considers the context, process, and possible outcomes of small place-based firms operating in a web-impacted environment. Despite initial optimism that the web would provide a level-playing field for firms of all sizes, little evidence exist to support such a notion. When the learning abilities deemed necessary to exploit the web are considered, it would seem that only the most entrepreneurial of small firms would likely adapt to web-impacted environments. It is concluded that the present rate of web-based change represents a unique and valuable research opportunity for entrepreneurship researchers.

The effect of 3-5-6 TPA on fruit drop and fruit size in the lychee (Litchi Chinensis) cultivars 'Fay Zee Siu' (feizixiao) , 'Kaimana', 'Kwai Mai Pink', 'Souey Tung' and 'Tai So' (Mauritus)

Fruit drop can cause major yield losses in Australian lychee orchards, the severity varying with cultivar and season. Research in China, South Africa and Israel has demonstrated the potential for synthetic auxins used as foliar sprays to reduce fruit drop in lychee. Trials tested the efficacy of the synthetic auxin 3-5-6 trichloro-2-phridyl-oxyacetic acid (TPA) applied as a foliar spray at 50 ppm on fruit drop and fruit size on the cultivars ‘Fay Zee Siu’, ‘Kaimana’, ‘Kwai Mai Pink’, ‘Souey Tung’ and ‘Tai So’. TPA reduced fruit drop when applied to fruit greater than 12 mm in length but increased fruit drop when fruit were smaller. Fruit size at the time of application had less effect on the response than the level of natural fruit drop. When natural fruit drop was high, TPA significantly reduced it; by up to 18.7 in ‘Fay Zee Siu’, 37.1 in ‘Kaimana’, 39.8 in ‘Kwai Mai Pink’, 15.1 in ‘Souey Tung’ and 7.7 in ‘Tai So’. TPA was less effective when natural fruit drop was low. TPA increased the number of large fruit and frequently increased the number of small fruit at harvest. The small fruit were associated with an increase in the retention of fruit with poorly developed (chicken tongue) seed. Average fruit size was generally larger (up to 12.7 in ‘Souey Tung’ and 22 in ‘Tai So’) with TPA applications.

Training the natives as nurses in Australia: So what went wrong?

The story of the Aboriginal women who participated in Australias nursing history remains largely untold. In the first six decades of the twentieth century, Aboriginal people were confronted with harsh exclusionary practices that forced them to live in settlements, reserves and missions.¹ While many Aboriginal women worked in domestic roles (in white peoples homes and on rural properties), small numbers were trained at public hospitals and some Aboriginal women received training to be native nurses who worked in hospitals on settlements

This critical factor is resulting in a fundamental change to the appearance of our cities. It has become plausible, at least, to design and build complex and non-repetitive buildings without incurring prohibitive additional labor costs.However The ground level lobby spaces often do manage to retain some of the external. However, the interior working spaces, particularly in commercial office buildings tend to loose this grand gesture. However - the internal activity - the very reason for the existence of the building – often takes place in monotonous spaces that seem driven predominately by the need to accommodate workstation furniture and functions in dire need of reconsideration.

Functional interaction of diphenols with polyphenol oxidase - Molecular determinants of substrate/inhibitor specificity SO FEBS JOURNAL

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) catalyzes the oxidation of o-diphenols to their respective quinones. The quinones autopolymerize to form dark pigments, an undesired effect. PPO is therefore the target for the development of antibrowning and antimelanization agents. A series of phenolic compounds experimentally evaluated for their binding affinity and inhibition constants were computationally docked to the active site of catechol oxidase. Docking studies suggested two distinct modes of binding, dividing the docked ligands into two groups. Remarkably, the first group corresponds to ligands determined to be substrates and the second group corresponds to reversible inhibitors. Analyses of the complexes provide structural explanations for correlating subtle changes in the position and nature of the substitutions on o-diphenols to their functional properties as substrates and inhibitors. Higher reaction rates and binding are reckoned by additional interactions of the substrates with key residues that line the hydrophobic cavity. The docking results suggest that inhibition of oxidation stems from an interaction between the aromatic carboxylic acid group and the apical His 109 of the four coordinates of the trigonal pyramidal coordination polyhedron of CuA. The spatial orientation of the hydroxyl in relation to the carboxylic group either allows a perfect fit in the substrate cavity, leading to inhibition, or because of a steric clash flips the molecule vertically, facilitating oxidation. This is the first study to explain, at the molecular level, the determinants Of substrate and inhibitor specificity of a catechol oxidase, thereby providing a platform for the design of selective inhibitors useful to both the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Dynamics of Stick-Slip: Some Universal and Not So Universal Features

Stick-slip is usually observed in driven dissipative threshold systems. In these set of lectures, we discuss, some generic and system specific features of stickslip systems by considering a few examples wherein there has been some progress in understanding the associated dynamics. In most stick slip systems, both at low and high drive rates, the system slides smoothly, but within a window of drive rates, the motion becomes intermittent; the system alternately “sticks” till the stress builds up to a threshold value, and then “slips” when the stress is rapidly released. This intermittent motion can be traced to the existence of an unstable branch separating the two resistive branches in the force-drive-rate relation. While the two resistive branches are experimentally measurable, the unstable branch is usually not measurable and is only inferred.
